I've got few doubts regarding the Nandroid backup. I boot into the recovery and under Backup/restore there are several options which include
- Nand backup
- Nand backup + .android_secure
- Nand + ext backup
- Nand + ext backup + .android_
Which option do I select?
Sorry am a n00b. I am running on stock 2.2.2 and I've installed the recovery and would like to flash the franco kernel, my question is when the official Gingerbread is available will I be able to upgrade without any issues since I would change the kernel?

For stock without any Apps2SD/Link2SD stuff Nand backup + .android_secure is enough. (i.e., the system, data and apps installed on phone and apps installed on SD via the Froyo built-in mechanism.)
For the rest, we do not know, ask LG, they will not tell you the date either, no point in asking.
I've got this application App2Sd installed on the phone. So which backup do I go for? also I get this error "Error : Run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb !" while creating a backup of anything other than Nand backup.

If you partitioned your card, you need to backup the ext as well. If you are unsure about whether you have anything installed on SD card via Froyo, just back up everything.
As for the error, would guess to be corrupt filesystem on the ext partition, or SD card compatibility issue or whatnot.
What recovery are you using (incl. version) and how did you partition the card, and what filesystem?
AmonRa/modified by Drellisdee version 1.2. I haven't partitioned the card. I just installed the recovery and gives me error whenever i try to create any backup. I tired only the Nand backup and it was successful. Yes. I've installed many applications on the sd card.

Clear as a mud. What is that App2SD "application" you are talking about, exactly? Where did you get it from, how did you install?
Clear as mud what? Obviously from android market. App2Sd... To move the installed applications onto the SD card.

"Obviously" - there is nothing obvious about this, most people here are using flashed custom apps that use ext2/3/4 partition for moving applications, cache and data to a partitioned SD card.
Well whatever, I need a market link, since searching for App2Sd will definitely not answer my question, there are loads of utilities there.

I clearly mentioned that am new to these stuff and "flashed custom apps" No chance since I've just installed the custom recovery. You are confusing me further. Thanks for the confusion.

You are welcome. Until you tell me exactly which application you installed, I really cannot help. Searching for app2sd results in tons of results and there are also applications that partition the SD card themselves, so it is not even clear whether you have the card partitioned or not. Apps2SD itself is a meaningless description, sorry.
Otherwise, stick with nand backup only, use Titanium for the rest and move on.
I don't think you got my point.

I cannot tell you what to backup when I do not know where you have stuff installed/stored, uh! I already answered your question in a generic way and no more detailed info can be provided since I know nothing about your particular setup.
Ditto for the second question, as said - if you cannot be bothered to get the info required to diagnose your weird error message, simply use plain nand backup for system and data and Titanium for applications backup. All I can say to this.

1) If i use the kTool for EFS backup and do a total wipe before flashing custom ROM, (mounts and storage>format system) will the EFS backup also get wiped out? My common sense tells me yes since the internal SD will be wiped out and kTool saves the EFS files on the internal SD but just want to be sure so that i can search an alternative method for backing up as i want to flash custom ROM with total wipe.
2) Does the EFS Pro app save the EFS backup on the internal SD only or does it have an option to save on ext SD card?
3) Do i just have to be rooted to backup my EFS files? Im just asking as im terribly obsessed my EFS files will get corrupt while rooting the phone! Is there a simple way to backup my EFS files on my ext SD card without root?
4) Can my EFS files really get corrupt just by rooting my phone?

I know nothing about EFS backup but how about this. I assume you have access to a PC and the usb cable that came with the fone. Or else you do have a microsd card in the fone. Why don't you do the backup and copy the files to either the microsd card or a PC. That way you know you have a backup you can use.
In most cases, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, the format system will not touch your backups.

Yes very true, i can also do that and it also crossed my mind but im afraid that by doing so, copying the EFS files and folders onto a PC or directly to the ext SD card will alter the files and folders in a way that they cannot be restored and i dont want to take that risk unless im totally sure of what im doing or if this can actually be done.

Ok so I just found out that with EFS Pro I can backup on my pc safely. Do I need to be rooted to use this app and safely backup the efs files?

A week ago,I flashed cwm touch recovery(1st time I install a custom recovery on my gs3) with odin.I decided to try out wanamlite so I made a nandroid backup of my ROM(stock 4.1.2) then flashed wanamlite.I had a titanium backup of my data so I could restore it on wanamlite but I forgot to put it on my pc before flashing and wiping data(silly I know lol) so I wanted to restore my nandroid backup so I could make another TB of my data but the restore wasn't successful.I got this error message in cwm touch ''error restoring /data !'' or smthin similar and I got in a bootloop.I tried flashing back stock ROM and wiping data(with sd card) then tried to restore the nandroid again,got the same error.I later found out that titanium backup can restore data from a nandroid.Anyways,I tried to make a backup using TWRP but when I tried to restore it,I got in a bootloop again...what could be the problem ? I never had this problem with my gs2...
TL;DR:restoring a nandroid backup gets me in a bootloop whether I use cwm touch or TWRP.

Yes I backed up to the internal sd card.I backed up once with cwm and TWRP.Btw,when I tried restoring I had to move the backup from pc to phone because I did a full data wipe and the backup was gone(in both times) if that makes any difference.I have made sure the backup was the same size when I moved it to and from my pc.
Did you enable MD5 check? Could it be files damage to cause unsuccessful boot up?

No but why would they be damaged ? and why would it happen TWICE ? anyways,I will try again now with md5 check.
UPDATE:tried out with md5 checking,didn't get any errors but I still got into bootloop :/
if you didn't turn md5 on Before backing up, there's no md5 to compare to, hence no errors.

It is not,in fact I don't even have an external sd card.I did format everything before trying to restore.

I own a S3 and for one year I just dealed with the stock ROM, just root access. Saturday I decided to enter the modding world but I knew it would bring a lot of troubles...
I did a nandroid backup of 4.1.2 stock FW just before the flashing, but no way it restores, after an hour of processing it shows - Error restoring data! - it boots but it's a total mess. I even restored the original stock FW with triangle away, wipe all and double ODIN flash and then reflashing the clockworkmod recovery to restore the backup again but nope, won't work.
Luckily I did a full backup with Titanium backup prior, the real trouble is with ES file explorer: I did copy/paste of the entire internal storage to the external microsd but for some reasons it stopped at "D", "Downloads" folder... I lost everything else and I realized this only AFTER wiping and flashing, of course...
I'm trying to recover the files with Hexamob, hope this will work....
I have this two questions:
Does Nandroid work only with backup < 2.5 Gb? Mine is 4.5 Gb...
Does Nandroid backup the internal storage, too??

If I am not wrong, Nandroid does a backup of your phone (system, data etc) so that when you restore it, you got anything like it was. It does not backup the SD card though. In addition backups of over 2.5gb should work.
/data is the internal memory? Or is it /sdcard?

its all the internal memory.
/system
/data
/cache
...are all on the emmc memory and are backed up in a nandroid backup.
/sdcard is actually a mount of /data/media, however this is ignored by nandroid backups for obvious reasons

So /sdcard is the external microsd? And /data is the internal memory (I mean what you see when connecting phone to PC, Internal memory and external sd)?
If nandroid backed up internal memory would be great, may be there's some way to recover datas from backup files (unyaffs won't work, Titanium Backup just shows apps and their datas).
I'll do some further research.
no. sdcard is the internal SD, which is just a link to /data/media. to backup it, use copy and paste. no, it's not possible to recover internal SD data from a nandroid backup
Be aware that Nandroid does not backup your EFS .

/sdcard is the "internal sd"
/extSdCard is the "external sd"
/data is something different that just so happens to be the home of /sdcard
As I feared, no internal storage backup in Nandroid. But what makes me more angry is that s****y ES file explorer so crappy it can't even perform a simple task like copy-paste. If that worked I wouldn't have lost anything. :crying:
Not to mention the useless nandroid... doesn't work either.
However I did manually backed up the EFS folder, but I don't really think it matters in this case.
If your /sdcard was 90% full, where would the nandroid go? External obviously? But recovery devs cannot assume that everyone has an external sd card with enough free space to store a 15 GB backup.

Just clarifying
Hey guys, this is my first ever post on xda!
Just to clarify, a nandroid backup will only backup device root files, and not the (internal) sdcard, nor the extsdcard files, from my understanding of this thread. So to do a complete backup of ALL phone data, I should perform the nandroid backup to extsdcard, and then simply copy (internal)sdcard and extsdcard to my computer for safe keeping?

Yesterday I whiped my internal storage. Sadly I forgot to secure my WhatsApp images from the respective folder.
Before whipping the device I've made a nandroid backup with CWM.
The question is: does a nandroid backup includes also the images and videos from the internal storage folder of WhatsApp? Can I restore it with the nandroid manager?
I would be pleased for a fast answer :good:

Yes it should because it backed up /data which some devices have their internal sd partition. Extract the data and see. It should be there as long as you didn't store images on the external sd.

So you're saying that there was no backup in the first place? Or it was wiped?
There is a backup on the external SD. What I meant is that I used nandroid manager for a restore but it only restored the WhatsApp data and sadly no images or videos at all. Maybe there is another possibility?

It should be in a Whatsapp folder on the sdcard.

As far as I know...
A cwm backup will restore data but it won't restore the files.
