[Q] Phone calls sometimes noisy and hissing - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After searching this forum and Google in general and not finding any answer to this issue (probably since I'm using the wrong search terms - sorry, English is not my native language), I hope I'm not bothering with my problem here...
Every now and then, the call quality is incredibly poor.
I hear things extremely overamplified, voices sound like really loud, clanking tin cans. It's totally unacceptable and annoying.
Sometimes it happens, most of the times calls are perfectly clear though.
I tried to find out what kind of circumstances these bad calls have in common but didn't find anything.
It can happen when I have poor or great signal.
It happens with all numbers I dial.
Usually, it happens when I call somebody. But I also had it happen when I received a call.
Sometimes a reboot fixes this issue. But not all the time.
And quite often, I dial a random service number a few times until the noise is gone, then I can call people normally again. For a while.
I cancelled noise suppression and amplification - it doesn't make a difference.
I lower and raise the volume - nothing changes.
Funny thing is that I can tell from a symbol on the display that the next call is gonna be screwed up so basically, my Galaxy appears to be aware that something's not OK sometimes.
I would love to post a screenshot but unfortunately, the forum doesn't let me yet.
Basically, the icon looks like a crossed out fever chart.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Cheers
Alex

Sure. But I can't reproduce the problem.
Sometimes a boot fixes it for a while, sometimes the problem still exists even after rebooting.

Post screen shots if possible.

[Q] Atrix Low Volume on Mic

My Atrix has been experiencing low volume on the Mic, but not all of the time. I can be talking and then all of a sudden the other party can hardly hear me.
Anyone else experience this type of issue?
+1
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I get this all the time when talking to my fiancee or friend they always say they can't hear me. But alot of the times I talk to other people than never say anything about it being low.

Lots of people are experiencing this issue...which is why there was an article about it on Engadget this morning and why it has been publicly acknowledged by Motorola. It's being worked.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Specifically, if I shake the phone, and blow in the mic, it sometimes seems to help.
Pretty strange.
I was about to return the phone on account of this but maybe I'll keep it knowing there's a software issue they will address.
-James
Any updates on this? The other end has trouble hearing me on pretty much every call I make. Should I try and get a replacement from Motorola, or is this believed to be a software issue?
It's incredibly frustrating when your phone doesn't work as a phone ...

I have the same freaking issue! Very annoying having to repeat myself often! Due to this issue and the crappy cameras, I'm gonna return the phone next week!
Follow this thread and please post if you are still having issues after 1.83 and turning off noise suppression. The more of us that let them know this is still a huge issue the more likely they will hopefully do something.
I paid full price and beyond the 30 day return period. Makes me long for the iphone 4, I just hate the battery situation on that..which is the ONLY reason I bought the Atrix...
Other than no one can hear me, its a nice phone...
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/380841#380841
Have any of you tried turning off the noise suppression feature? I know this issue might be more than that though...
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I often have difficulty with the person on the other end not being able to hear me. The phone seems to need to be perfectly positioned for the Mic to pick up my voice. Also the speech recognition software seems to be less accurate than it was when I bought the phone a month ago. Has anyone tried to clean the mic?
I have this problem all the time and I can see no difference when using noise suppression or not. Would love to fix this but havn't hear anything about it lately.
I have this issue as well. I turned off noise suppression but for what it's worth, no discernible difference at least that I've noticed. Bummer.
Why is it that every Android phone has this problem? SE X10, HTC Desire Z, Motorola Atrix... Jesus... I just want a working mic and speakerphone for the rare occasion that I use my phone as a phone!!

And unfortunately it didn't.
Any updates?
Nothing beyond the mic on my Atrix sucks. Perhaps more than others?
I chatted with Motorola about my microphone issue.
The suggested going to Settings > Applications> Manage Applications > filter to All> scroll and go to "Media audio Effects" then select "Clear Data". After doing so reboot the phone.
I did so and the microphone works much better now.

What version are you on? Mine has nothing stored in the cache after making a phone call, so I can't clear anything.
Hmm. Thanks for the lead though. I'd love to see whether this works or if there are any other steps to try!

...I know this is an old thread, I'm trying to find some ways to make me NOT sound muffled and far away to the people I'm talking to on my Atrix...
EDIT: I cleaned the microphone with positive results. I made a HOW-TO HERE.

NFC Noise?

To be honest I'm not even sure it's a noise being produced by the NFC feature, but a post on Androidforums mentioned a noise similar to the one I'm experiencing and suggested it maybe due to the NFC feature of the S3.
Basically whenever I move my device up and down, or out of my pocket and place it on a desk or table, it makes a large "blip" like noise. It drives me absolutely mad, especially when attempting to use the device while golfing or bike riding, constantly blipping in my ear.
Can anyone else confirm this noise so I know I'm not crazy? Even better, could someone inform me how to disable this?
Thank you.

[Q] Call Quality DNA

I'm hoping it's something I'm missing in the set up or some minor other issue but after I finally got the DNA activated I made two calls.
Both calls were choppy on both ends of the call. This phone has gotten stellar reviews on reception quality. Volume and clarity.
I'm being told that the listener hears only bits and pieces of my voice and I hear the same from them.
All my other phones worked fine from my house where I made the calls.
Any thoughts on this from you guys on what might be happening?
Could something be defective on my DNA? Or does this sometimes happen with new out of the box phones?

If worse comes to worse (I'm hoping this is going to correct itself) can I return it to a local Verizon store for an exchange or do I have to ship it back to Verizon?
I'm going to try the store first on Friday (and I'd rather be shot then to do it on Black Friday).
Are you guys suggesting that this is probably a bad set?

I'm sure you can exchange in store even if you ordered online. Also, for what it's worth, my call quality has been very, very good. In fact, the clarity, at least on my end, has been noticeably better than the last couple phones I've had so if yours is really that bad when under ideal circumstances, that sounds like it might be a unique issue with your phone.

I don't want to leave this post without a follow up.
Yesterday when I (finally) activated my DNA: I then made two new voice calls.
As I stated above the calls were choppy and very bad on both ends.
I waited until this morning and made some more voice calls. Even from the same location.
All calls have been clear, audio R9, and more or less perfect.
I had forgotten that about five years ago also on a new cell phone: I had this same issue when activating and calling for the first time.
Nobody could hear me clearly and I could not hear them. The next day and forever after all was fine.
I am not a mobile device geek but I'm sure there is a deep dark explanation for this anomaly.
My son told me that I don't need to know what was happening yesterday but that today is what counts.
I still wonder.
The end result of this problem is that I did have a defective DNA device after all!
It did not fix itself, as I alluded to above.
The Verizon store gave me a new DNA and all is now good.
So.....for anyone interested, it is possible to receive a defective hardware (reception/radio/speaker/whatever) issue with this set.
At Verizon right now seeing if they give me an exchange on my DNA

Tell them that a new device should correct it. It did for me.
"Device type guys" might love the challenge of sitting around waiting for a future HTC update fix.
Just get a new set.....and walk away.
They wouldn't exchange it they couldn't get it to replicate the problem.

The problem is a fact!
Fortunately the employees at my store know me and know that I do not imagine issues.
A new DNA phone (for me) eliminated the problem.
When making calls you will hear the person you are speaking to clear as a bell.
But they are hearing your voice in the following manner:
1. Your voice fades in and out.
2. Some of your words are chopped out.
3. You sound to them like you are talking in a "tunnel".
Call Verizon and tell them that other buyers have successfully returned this set and the new one issued had no problems.
Get a new phone and don't settle for a HDC update.
Yes....some calls are fine. But I don't want "some" calls to be fine!
I want every call to be great on a new phone.

I'm not having any issues at all with call quality, but I have noticed that my touchscreen isn't nearly as sensitive as my Rezound was. I am constantly getting missed letters when typing on keyboard or having to double tap 3 or 4 times before my screen zooms. I'm thinking this is also a hardware issue and will likely try to get it swapped out soon. Has anyone else had sensitivity problems?
I need help... I keep getting told that the phone quality on the other end is just terrible that the other person just cant hear me at all. (That I sound like im in a tunnel and far away from my phone) I need to figure out a way to record the proof so i can take it to a verizon and get an exchange. Can someone or anybody give me any suggestions? I need help really bad.
go under phone settings and make sure voice privacy or any other sound cancelling settings are not turned on. Those really screw up call quality for me.

Tell the store you want a new phone! Call them from another location and speak to the manager. Ask him or her how well they can hear you.
My phone was so bad that every call I made the receiving party noticed it dramatically.
Send me a PM and I'll identify the store or you can ship the phone directly to Verizon within your 14 day period for a replacement set.
Your phone is defective and it's not going to change.

Anyone else not liking the wifi issue/bluetooth audio?

Its starting to bug me, especially the wifi while screen is off being disabled when I have not selected that anywhere. Also definitely feels spotty and doesnt load all my data right away when I turn screen on, like its slow. No way I should have to use keepalive app for wifi to remedy this. Bluetooth audio in my car sounds pretty bad. It cant just be my device as others have reported similar findings.
What are your thoughts, will you deal with this and just keep your device?
Have you possibly thought about another device?

This phone is new. 1st software release for our ATT phones. Report those bugs to HTC/ATT, they will address it. Fixes will come in future updates if the devs dont fix them first. All new phones have bugs, all. They normally get fixed
It was also before but all started 2 years ago when they were fiddling with battery to last longer.
When you stream music WiFi to router and then amp when screen is off it can effect constant playback.
But you figured out what's caused it.
Even with mp3 not only heavy flacs.

Yes my bluetooth call quality is bad. My earpiece call quality is fuzzy and buzzes. Am I the only one?
*EDIT* After unrooting, relocking the bootloader, factory reset, all that fun stuff, the call quality finally corrected. Then got worse again. I figured out that it was my Google account screwing around with settings because whether you set it to or not, it tries to restore your previous settings. After wiping out that account and rebooting, call quality is wonderful.

Yes I was getting ready to go to the AT&T store to swap for one with a non defective earpiece. But I wiped my primary Gmail account from the phone, rebooted, plugged it in to charge for a little while so I could do some schoolwork and call quality was fine. So I don't know if it pulled over bad settings from my old inspire or what. Try the call quality while there is no Google account signed in after the reboot.

Lol, yes correct that how WiFi is suppose to work on devices. I have zero WiFi issues myself. When it's enabled and i connect to say my home wifi it appears on my device and stays connected all throughout my home. Flawless for me. When wifi is disconnected or turned off well of course it is no longer displayed on the notification bar, it's turned off or not connected, why would it still be displayed up there?

I just wanted to make sure that the lack of push notification that some see is really due to a disconnect of wifi. If the wifi symbol is still there and they don't get push notifications it is probably something else...I saw many people complaining about hardware defects and in 50% of cases it was because they used task killers or battery "optimizers" that disabled sync and other important processes.

Well, I was serious. Then after an overnight charge the problem started again. Still fuzzy and buzzy on the earpiece. More a problem with volume than frequency. Its the same as the bluetooth call quality. Reminds me of when A/V pregain is set far higher than postgain for manual distortion control. I think the values for volume amplification are screwed up somewhere. I like the phone, I just don't wanna deal with crappy call quality forever. I could even deal with the bootloader locking if the other issues would get fixed (well. I already have my code.). Got five days to make a call on keep it or exchange before the no questions asked 14 day exchange window for AT&T closes.
UPDATE: Update on the earpiece. I was just about to swap it out but then during the call it stopped buzzing and became clear. It did this when I took it away from my face and did something onscreen during the call. If it was a hardware issue, it would do it every call and during the whole call in my opinion.

Sounds like your proximity sensor is covered up or not working. Do you have a screen protector or anything on the phone which might interfere with it? If so maybe remove it and retry. Also I'm sure you could find an app that would check it.

The Software is buggy and LG is not doing anything about it . I tweeted to them so many times and i thought HTC was bad.. they were amazing .. my first and last LG device .. however i am just confirming its not always proximity sensor issue .. Its the buggy software implementation.
i quite agree with you.... any idea when we get 6.0 ?
Would it be software? If we all have the same phone with the same software then we would all have the same problem, but we don't?
It's a software bug... Rebooting the phone fixed the problem, but then it starts acting the same way after few calls.

You could try( if you haven't already), wiping your sensors. They sometimes get dirty & don't work properly.
I have same issue and have no protectors or covers or nothing just the stock phone. I think it's got to be some stupid software issue and it is very irritating. Went from one ridiculous phone into another headache...

Drama much? The phone has been out for barely more than a month... and not every phone is having this issue.
Process: Collect as many bug reports as possible, recreate and fix issues, release a patch.
LG is not going to release a patch just for your particular problem because you tweeted really hard.

Like micro scratches on the screen, bleed on second screen, back peeling off .. and if you dont have this issue does not mean these issues dont matter and it also means serious quality control issues at LG. You for one needs to get over yourself and respect other people's problems, i have none of the above problems except the software bugs, i still feel compassionate towards fellow community members who might have recieved inferior quality devices. I clearly understand your personality type, "I dont care if the whole world goes to hell if i dont have a problem i am good." You should try to be less selfish and i am sure i am not the first one in your life to call you selfish. Think about why those people think you are selfish.
