Recently I started to download torrents with my Samsung Galaxy SIII. But there's a problem, my SD card system format is FAT32 and it has a 4GB limit per single file, but if I format my SD card to NTFS format, my phone won't recognize it. Is there anyway to make my phone recognize the SD card on NTFS format or is there any system format that have a larger maximum file capacity and my phone can recognize it?
Try using exFAT to format your sdcard. It'll work with stock ROMs but not AOSP based ROMs (unless otherwise specified).

MicroSD uses FAT32 filesystem.
My issue is that I cant transfer movies larger than 4GB to my SDcard and I want to be able to do this. On the internal memory, no problem.
Can I format my external SD in ext2 , will it work with the stock ROM ?

Format it in exFAT. Won't work with EXT in addition to not being able to read it in Windows
Format it in windows to exfat them it works perfect for files larger than 4 gb

You can use exFAT (supported by SGS3) : it does not have the 4GB file limitation

exFAT format works fine on my stock rooted S III. I've tired playing a 14Gb video sored on sd card without any problems.

Works just fine on a regular S3 without root
So does exFAT only work on stock roms? Are there any custom CM10 kernels that support it?

So I have the latest version of Clockwork recovery mod which lets me use an external sd card but Cyanogenmod 9 ROM doesn't recognize the external card and in fact wants to format it.
I'm using a 64GB Sandisk card and the latest nightly build of CM9. Any help appreciated.
Your SDcard is formated to FAT32 or exFAT?
Because CM9 is not able to use exFAT
ExFat formatted sdcards are not supported because its proprietary. XM will never support it.
Reformat it to FAT32 and it should work fine.

CWM wiped my ext sd when I flashed new rom to so just updated to latest cwm touch as well... Lost my nandroid backup was on ext sd

It doesnt wipe your ext card, it should only be unable to read it. Use "HP Usb format tool" or any of the other tools you can find throqgh forum search. You're net the first to ask =)

I've been trying all the suggestions I can find in the forum to format my card to fat32 but nothing is working. Still exFat and not working in phone.
Would mounting the sd card in a usb connected reader rather than in a card adapter help?

I had a similar problem. After installing CM10 my 64gb sd card was no longer readable whether on the phone or a computer. I simply restored my nandroid backup to a Samsung rom and used the phone to format it back to exFat. I would suggest you let the phone format it for you.
On a side note, would using a exFat capable kernel such as Siyah Kernal enable exFat support on CM9 or 10?
/edit nvm, re-read the Siyah Kernel post, it says its supports CM9, AOSP and Samsung roms! exFat on CM9&10 here we come!
I made this mistake of putting my nandroid backup on my external sd card which has now presumably been wiped. Can re install base Samsung rom, but jp really keen to do that.
Let me know how the kernel goes, if it works I might try flashing it as well. Would be great to have exFat support. Will updating CM9 nightly mess with the kernel?

got fat32 working with HP USB Disk Storage Format and other phone
Took me some time, but finally this fixed it for me:
0) As you need to wipe the 64gb exFAT sdcard, first backup the stuff you want to restore later.
1) I did put the micro sdcard into an sdcard / USB adapter.
2) Then mounted this into my Windows 7 PC and formatted FAT32 with 'HP USB Disk Storage Format'
(free to use/download).
Do not use quick format, do a full FAT32 format, yes this takes some time..
3) Put the formatted card into another smartphone and just do a quick wipe/format again.
I used my (old) HTC Desire S for this with CM7
Did read this on an other forum, there a samsung galaxy s2 was used.
4) Finally put the sdcard in your Samsung Galaxy S3 with the CM9. :silly:
5) Restore your saved stuff from step 0. :good:
Now ex FAT is removed this sdcard now also mount easy on my main Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

It allows you to format >32GB disks to FAT32 on the computer without having to rely on another phone

Thanks a lot, your instructions worked. I did part 3 on my old ZTE Blade and now my Galaxy Note sees my 64GB SDXC card.
Since exFAT is not supported by AOKP roms and I plan to use one, I have to reformat my sd card. The thing is I don't know how and I cant even find out how to do it.
I've tried reformating in CWM, in Android itself and in Windows (by plugging the phone). There is no option of changing the partition format.
The only way possible is plugging the SDcard directly to the computer? I dont have any adapter so I cant really do it wihout buying one
I use either EaseUS Partition Manager or MiniTool Partition Wizard...google them, you can reformat any SD card to pretty much any format

Oh, I did format it from within the phone earlier, just like you said. It is in fat32 then I guess, will install an aosp rom later and check it (im currently on sammy based)

Have you tried using the phone itself to format the sd card? I would suspect it would put ext3/ext4 on it which does not have the fat32 limitations.
The phone would use fat32 aswell as it's made default for the external sd. Also ext3/4 can only be used if you mount the card after every reboot by hand in the terminal/with a startup script => you can't use mtp to move files between pc and phone. I still wait that the cm team apploes the patchs that ext4 will be possible format to be used as on the internal sdcard

Hmm that is a pity as I was hoping to be able to transfer larger files. I was looking into NTFS and using a mount app, but realised I would not be able to use the Backup features in recovery as it may not see the SD card . What a pain.
Actually is there a way to possibly format the SD card 1 partition FAT32 and the other NTFS ? Could the phone (S3) address two separate partitions ?
I've been having this problem and its really ****ing me off. Tried allsorts. Currently using cm10 and tried NTFS mounted with paragon but the fs keeps corrupting and so I have to run chkdsk on it to repair it. Also it doesn't stay mounted. Tried 2 partitions under windows using acronis disk director, the second wouldn't mount under windows or be assigned a drive letter, so I'm guessing that's an SD limitation.
I'm just on fat32 at the minute via guiformat but if I play music from the SDcard it locks up and just stops playing and I have to reboot. Even did this in stock Sammy ROM as exfat. Also tried sd speed increase and tested my read and write speeds. These improved and I got decent speeds so I can't understand why this is happening. Its such a ****ty stupid issue that you just can't play music from a memory card on such a phone with all of these different combinations, its ridiculous.

Flashed the 20130128 nightly coming from Jelly Beans. When I rebooted the phone the (empty) 64gb SD Card was "damaged". I tried to format it via the phone and that didn't help.
After looking into other posts I keep seeing that it needs to be formatted as a FAT32 but that this wasn't recommended for cards 32gb and higher.Is there anything special I need to do after flashing 4.2??

There is nothing wrong about reformatting the Sd card to FAT32. You just lose the ability to transfer files over the size of 4GB. You're going to need to reformat the sdcard on your pc by using a third party program.
AOSP ROMs do not support exFAT.
