I have a XT910 and I want to try new ROMs, I've tried MIUI but I didn't like it. So I wanted to try CM9 (CM10 has too many non-working functions that I need) and I've downloaded the one on this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801379
In order to flash MIUI I had to use CWM and apparently CM9 is not compatible with CWM, do I really need to use Safestrap (or BootMenu) ? Because I've read that I might not be able to flash anything else afterwards (I'd like to test Google Now : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747224 for example) with Safestrap.
And If I have to use safestrap, how do I get rid of CWM ? I haven't found anything helpful yet...

1. If a ROM developer says to use something, use it to flash the ROM unless you are advanced user. So use SS3 like the thread you pointed to says to do.
2. If you install SS3, it includes TWRP. The instructions for flashing Google Now in your other link says to use recovery software to flash like CWM or TWRP. So yes you can flash Google Now using TWRP that is built into SS3.
3. To unistall CWM, go to the thread where you learned how to install it for removal instructions.
4. Once you have SS3 installed you can add more ROMs to test at the same time.

Guys, I'm with some problems (everything works fine for everyone, except for me) with CWM Recovery, it's crash backuping and don't install any custom ROM.
So, I would like to know if there's any method to install one custom ROM using the PC. Anyone knows?
Mine never crashed once in that cwm installation. maybe you have a corrupt cwm or something?
try it from the beginning. use the batch script here on this thread
ClockWorkMod Installer - Windows v4 - Linux v4
and see if it works now.
i guess you would have manually installed cwm.
i dont think there is a way to use the pc to install roms unless a dev steps up to do that. try the basics and see if it works.
IF you still experience crashing try flashing the whole phone using SE update service and then go from the base. it was easy to do that (through my experience i found that).

The problem it that I've just had flased it and installed with this CWM Installer. It started having problems after I tried to install the CM 7, when I was with Ginger. DX v6 or v9, I don't remembered.
And the xRecovery started with problems after that too. I've installed ArcMini Theme with it well, but after the Ginger.DX, I couldn't do ANYTHING!
Oh, and sorry for English.
I don't thing it will possible or easy to install via PC & you should first go for xrecovery, install ROM like froyobread (which having simple installation process) & will also install updated CWM recovery automatically. Then you can replace this ROM with any other ROM & remember now you have CWM as well as xrecovery.......enjoy

I have trued to read and search the forums, but I haven't been able to figure a definitive answer to this...
When I flash CWM on my S2 using Odin, does it root the phone ?
I usually Root (with framaroot), Flash CWM, Flash CM 11 nightly, Re-root using framaroot.
But Can I just do : Flash CWM and Flash the CM 11 nightly ? does it auto root ?
What do you mean, 'usually'? Why is it that you can't just flash each new build of Cm11 from the previous one? Why do you need to re-root in the first place?
When I rooted my phone, rather than using a one-click such as framaroot, I flashed a kernel (siyah in my case) using Odin. That gave me CWM and root. That cuts out the step you're trying to to eliminate, if I've understood your question correctly?
I'm not sure in answer to your direct question, try it and see. Hopefully the alternative method I just gave you makes it a little quicker though
Edit : you could, if flashing CWM only doesn't give you root, just flash SuperSU from there and then continue.

Well mate your question is tricky to understand :cyclops:
1. NO installing CWM wont root your device requires another process (such a framaroot)
2. Aftrer installing CM 11 you dont have to re-root the mobile because CM comes prerooted with superuser !!
3. if you had already managed to install CM 11 think that you have already rooted your mobile
just for typing the 3 points my head spins in short no need for rooting after cm 11 ....and NO cwm wont root your device

Can I do a CWM, Cyanogen install without rooting ? Since CM already comes rooted. So jut CWM using odin, then CM install ROM. ?

CyanogenMod comes rooted. Also, the default recovery on CyanogenMod is CWM as well, so you can boot into recovery with volume up + home + power and flash a new build from there. You don't even need to use framaroot or flash CWM using Odin...
And yes, most (almost all) custom ROMs should come rooted unless you're flashing stock Samsung ROM through Odin. Besides, if you're flashing something in recovery, I don't think you need to be rooted.

Just to make sure that you understand everything i'm segregating your questions
1.Why do i install CWM when i'm already rooted?
Rooting is a process which just gives your overall control to your device, but just rooting wont make you eligible to flash any ROMS. Now when your install CWM (Clock Work Mod) its a unique type of recovery which enables your to flash Custom Roms. Your ordinary stock rom (your samsung firmware) also does have a recovery (stock recovery) which cannot penetrate into system files. So CWM is a must to flash roms !
Can i do a CWM and flash Cyanogenmod?
Absolutely NO!! Just because CM comes prerooted doesn't mean that you can flash CM without rooting.. CWM requires root to flash and change system files. For instance your are in Stock Samsung Firmware not rooted you just install CWM flash Cyanogenmod and you'll end up in a bootloop or softbrick. Since your system didnt allow files inside coz no ROOT!!..In the other hand if your already running Cyanogenmod (any version) you dont have to root nor flash CWM because they come prerooted and preinstalled with CWM.so you can flash on the go

Well cyanogenmod has an inbuilt function to disable root and most of the Roms comes with it now it can be found in settings >developer options> and root access...but not all roms im assuming. on the other hand yes some roms never come prerooted such as (omni rom 4.4.2) where you have to flash superuser to get root. But as i said incase of all prerooted roms there is an option to disable root

Hello all,
First of all I want to say I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs etc.
Currently I'm at stock 4.3 Jellybean and I want to flash my SGS3 to the new CM 11 ROM.
I rooted my phone following this tutorial: vvvvvv.telefoonrooten.nl/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s3-root/ (sorry if its in Dutch, but it uses the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3 and Odin).
After I rooted I copied both the CM11 ROM and GAPPS to my external SD, I went to recovery and tried to install the new custom ROM but I got an error (status 7) and it was aborted.
Also if I try to reboot it won't boot normally as it should be but it goes back to recovery mode automatically...
I fixed to get back to Jellybean by flashing the stock rom (unrooting?) it via Odin.
Anyone else got the exact same problem as I do and knows a solution to be able to flash CM 11?

please read the thirst post in a rom/kernel/whatever thread. and maybe if you havent done it already you should also read the stickies in general section.

BTW latest philz touch recovery works too
Since you went back to stock and you already know how to root, I suggest you go to Play Store and download ROM Manager to help you install latest CWM recovery on your device.
Or you can simply go to CWM website, pick the version of the recovery for your phone and flash it via Odin.

I had the same problem the fix is quite easy
flash the latest CWM 6.0.4.4 and flash cm11 it will work fine

Indeed it worked! I found it out myself yesterday. Went to the CWM site and downloaded the latest version (6.0.4.4.) and flashed it through Odin. But thanks for your input anyways (to all who replied) !
An alternative solution that I often use is to open the Updater Script in META-INF folder in the ROM's zip and delete first lines, where it gets device model as property.
Obviously it's an UNSAFE operation (because that lines avoid to install ROMs of other phone on mine) but when I'm sure that ROM I've downloaded is for my phone I do it and it works
I just rooted my phone using 'jeboo_kernel_i9100_v1-2a' kernel.
But now i want to install CM11 Rom on my rooted phone.
What should I do??
Please help me with the whole procedure. As this is my first experience with rooting.
Hi sly, I think you already have the basic flashing knowledge and after you do it once you will get to know it's easy.
First make a rom backup of your rom you have now(optional if you want to go maybe back, but its recommended for first time.)
Then download the latest recovery version, twrp or clockworkmod for the S2
Download cm11
Flash the newest recovery,
Reboot into recovery
Format data/factory reset
Wipe /system
Wipe /dalvik-cache
Flash cm11
Flash kitkat gapps
Reboot.
Enjoy cm11.
The reason why you need latest recovery is because cm11(kitkat) needs selinux enabled recoveries, else it will say something like aborted, set_metadata_recursive failed.

You can also download light gapps, also from me incase if you don't want all that bloatware from the gapps.
I hope you understand me, I can't give you all the links so you also have to search a bit in the android development forum also and read maybe some threads in general and you will be an experienced flasher/S2 owner. That I'm not posting the links of these easy things is also to help you :good:

I read your post on another thread you said you have flashed siyah kernel, so you are already rooted. You just need to use a "kitkat compatible" recovery such as CWM 6.0.4.5+ or TWRP 2.7+ to flash kitkat roms
Just a quick google search for "kitkat compatible recovery" gave me this one. Just download the CWM .zip, flash it from siyah recovery, then reboot to recovery(not system), then do your wipes/backups and flash the rom and gapps you want and reboot to system. Done
will give this a go!
