Hello All,
I have successfully updated my Xperia Tablet S to release 6a without losing root. Here is how you can do It...
1 You have to be already rooted.
2 Make sure you are updating from release 6 to release 6a, i.e that means incremental update of around 17.7 MB
3 Download Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from play store.
4 Open Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper then do backup root.
5 Download and install incremental release 6a update.
6 After update installation & reboot, open Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper then do restore Root.
7 Voila your device now is rooted and updated to release 6a.
IMPORTANT:
1 This will NOT work if you are updating to 6a from any release prior to release 6, i.e release 5,4,...
2 This will NOT work if you have a full system image update, i.e >300MB + in size update file.
enjoy
this is best news of the day .:victory:
can anybody confirm this works?
thinking about going for it my self but i'm a little shy,
i'll wait till some more pros tested it just to be safe
mean while could you explain in more detail of which root method and which firmware to start with.
hmmmm,i got rooted in R3.anyway to update it without lose root.and the R6 can root or not?

You need to Install r6 then root the incremental to r6a following first post
Damn thats a nice trick! anyway you can share the backup that ota voodoo root keeper made so people with r6a can root back?
I had rooted r6, i've updated to r6a and then I noticed I had lost root

guys - it cant be just restored to voodoo!
you need to have already voodoo aplied on r6, then flash incremental r6a,
which just make some changes on /system partition (not overwriting/replacing all the partition).
the same trick would be rename su to xsu or something else
so everybody who is already on 6a - not a chance.

What about "re-install" r6 with the original OTA file through recovery? Is it possible!?
**EDIT**
Nevermind... I've totally forgot about the version checking

Hi everyone!
I was trying to ask this in the Dev forum, but aparently my post count doesn't allow me to do so...
I just bought a Sony Tablet S (Wifi 16 GB version), and it comes with Android 3.1 and Kernel 2.6.36.3, so my question is if I can/should root it before I update it to ICS? Is the root process safe and easy to do, and does it void the warranty?
Thanks for your help...
yes - you need to root it before you upgrade - then upgrade using AiO tool by Condi.. here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515720

Great, thanks for your help! I see from that link that the root can be undone, but can this also be done after the ICS update? I will try to root my Tablet S with the stock Android 3.1 and after I want to update it to the oficial ICS...
Putente,
if you upgrade to official ICS, you will not be able to root, till now.
awn
you will probably have to upgrade to 3.2.1 first, because most of 3.1 versions couldnt be rooted. BUT BE CAREFUL! - do not use OTA update if it comes with ICS because its not rootable and you cant go back..
First you should get URL of 3.2.1 of your region - check one of HC URLS thread,
flash 3.2.1, root, download ICS and use AiO to preroot it, then flash custom ICS with root.
thats all
br
condi
Well, this is starting to get a bit confusing for me, as I'm a noob. I thought that this root process would be easier. I'll do a bit more reading about this subject before I make any decisions...
I got another question...
I have an update notice on my tablet and it says something about a system update version 1.10 and Android 3.2. Is this the (in)famous kernel build #10, or can I safely perform this update before I use condi's AIO tool for root and ICS update?
Thanks.
If you get 3.2 update, you'll probably receive kernel #10 but that update will be soon followed by 3.2.1 with kernel #5, #6 or #8 (or even another one, depending on your region) rootable by Condi's tool.
Then you can be proposed to download another 3.2.1, don't accept as it will be kernel #10.
You may be able to keep root after 4.0.3 update using Condi's tool if you come from a rooted 3.2.1. If not, you won't be able to gain root because there's actually no exploit for stock ICS.
So be carefull!

So you have 3.2 kernel 10?
Then you can install this for Portugal 'WIFI only'.
3.2.1R2 Wifi Only SGPT111PT/S SGPT112PT/S
http://info.update.sony.net/ST003/nbx03_011/contents/0008/signed-nbx03_011-ota-0042.002.zip
This is 3.2.1r2 install, not sure what kernel but should be rootable, I helped someone from Sweden using the same file and they were able to root tablet.
Copy to SD card
To install go into recovery (turn off tab, then hold vol + and tap power button, tablet will boot and then go into recovery, then you can let go of vol button) and select file off SD card.
Then run condi's AIO and select root, it will tell you if it can be rooted or not.....
If that works and you would like to ICS then use the program to preroot the following:
4.0.3 Wifi Only SGPT111PT/S SGPT112PT/S
http://info.update.sony.net/ST003/nbx03_011/contents/0009/signed-nbx03_011-ota-120410025.zip
Oh and Portugal / Netherlands /Norway /Sweden are the same file
GOOD LUCK

Since we cannot decrease from the tablet then why don't we just increase it in the flashable pacakage?
I don't visit here much but I read somewhere that flashable firmware must be greater than the installed one, then why not just change the build.prop in the to higher that 4.0.3 and it will get accepted right?
or is this already tried?
if this succeeds then we can make HC's build.prop to 4.0.4 n flash it and then root it and flash to ICS with add root support.
Just a suggestion.
This may help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1887447
Although I personally havnt got it working myself, it does appears others have.

Although we can sign it. We do not have keys or method to fully sign it. Because the bootloader is locked it has to be a signed file from Sony.... With the exception of condi's AIO tool which bypasses the check. For this you need root! But now we can root ICS anyway and apply semi custom roms i.e root and lower incremental

Anyone successfully rooted Release 6 as of yet? I recently rooted Release 5 with the Bin4ry method. I had shot myself in the foot with the original stock ICS update and lost root for months, don't want to repeat that mistake
Thanks in advance.
Yes easily rootable same way as before using Bin4ry, I did my Xperia Tablet S.

Mike I know you had issues before
But if you remove root. Then update then to be safe remove root again, rollback and then use the root button with the same signed files as before, it should go easy as.
I found that once I had the right signed file, I can root first time everytime. I often change between R5, R1A and ICS trying to get to Honeycomb (hence why rooting so much) :highfive:

Hi guys,
If you want to have root, and be able to use decrypt/custom
preroot/flash custom functions on Sony Tablet S / Xperia Tab with new firmwares,
then DO NOT update directly to R5/R5A!
since R5 and future releases are shell disabled in recovery.
since R5A new root method with restore is not possible.
Sony Tablet S users - use AiO to make prerooted custom firmware,
with hidden.img replaced to still-vulnerable one!
Or if you dont want to make one for yourself, just wait for me
to make and upload custom fw's for wifi and 3g versions - HERE.

Tablet s wit 4.0.3R5 recovery v36 to 4.0.3R5a with root ?
Hello everybody,
I have a tablet S, with version 4.0.3R5 with Recovery v 36 and it's showing the update to r5a...
I'd like to root it, and get the update to make vpn work again (r5a).
I've read in STIFILZ FAQ (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828107) that it's rootable with condi's AIO tool, but how I can get r5a with root if I've already have recovery v 36 ?
In the same FAQs, I've seen this:
Q. I have 4.0.3R5 rooted and want to downgrade to something else
A. When you install R5 OTA or flash normal file the recovery is 'upgraded' you will not be able to use AIO to pre-root future updates nor flash them. You can still root using the ICS method (if it is still current for the update. You can however flash either ICS or ICS R1A by lowering your incremental and manually flashing through recovery. Or see below for condi's amazing solution.
Q. I want 4.0.3R5 rooted and don't want the stupid new recovery
A. See this post here.
-- Now with double flash (flashes both system0 & system1)
But I cant' figure out how to do it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction ?
Thanks a lot !!!

I think the link you put in "FLASHER" its wrong, I believe the right one is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050126&highlight=flasher
I'll try now to root and flash with this tool...
UPDATE: The root worked like a charm, then I used the flasher. It downloaded all the files, and prompted me to select wich hidden image to use. I've selected R1 since its the last with adb support. When it finished I entered recovery and I still see version 36, it's ok ? In the windows device manager I see a "sony" device with no drivers, I've tried the ones with ADB and AIO but it does not recognizes them....
thanks !

Hey guys, i have managed to root my Sony Tablet S (sgpt111gb/s) with the KingRoot app which you can download from the link below. You download APK on your device and install it as you would do normally and just run it and watch the show! I have to say that latest version of KingRoot DID NOT WORK with ver. 4.0.3 r5a currently installed on my tablet s but i've downloaded ''kingroot_global'' (link below) and it worked like a charm! My Sony Table S is now rooted
P.S. THIS ALSO WORKS FOR ALL OTHER ANDROID TABLETS/PHONES!

If I update, will it then update to 14.1.B.2.257 ota ?
Or am I best to get 14.1.B.2.257 update n do manually ?

no matter how you update, you will lose ROOT access.
It is still possible to get root back after updating, but does require a lot of work arounds to do it.

No,this is not true. If you install Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and do an OTA update, you can keep root. I tested it myself ...

Some thing I notes with update .257 that if you did OTA update the update will not delete the root or the busybox.

You will loose root, but if you have rooted firmware you can make flashable rooted zip to install on dualrecovery without wipe. hope this should work and you'll get update and root
