Is anyone having the issue with the screen timing off. I have it set to 15 seconds and almost every other time it wont go off.

Do you have smart stay enabled in display settings?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Yes I do. But I can walk away and it wont go off.

I have the same issue, tried turning every setting I could think of off and on, reboot fixes it but not permanently as it comes back. The other weird thing is if you have the Stay Awake option set after the said reboot it turns the setting off, but regardless the issue still returns.
I have similar issue but it's when i lay it on my bed or living room couch. It seems my ceiling(which is white) keeps screen on. I have smart stay on. When i turn it off it's all good.

HAD this issue My solution
first off are you using a different keyboard other then the Samsung one ?
i had this happen to me using Swift.
just reboot your device and you should be golden.
Dont know why the keyboard would do this to the phone but thats what it was and all i did was reboot and Timeout works fine...

I've noticed a handful of times that if I don't turn my screen of manually, it does not shut off. battery will be nearly dead, phone hot, and the screen still on an hour later. I have it set to turn off after one minute, but it does not always work. Anyone else run into this?

Yes, mine is doing that as well. Did you find out anything about why this is happening?

I'm on a stock ROM and I haven't noticed the screen stay on longer than the timeout i have set, currently 1 min. Although, I might be in the habit of turning the screen off when I'm done, I do think I've left the screen many times and it always turns off as I've never noticed the screen being on for long periods of time.
One thing which does come to mind, is there is an app which I use that has a setting to keep the screen on while the app is open. Perhaps if you have one of these apps open, it would lock the screen on. Do you run any apps like that?
Are you guys rooted? HTC or Revolutionary unlock? What ROMs/kernels are both of you using?
I'm sorry if this was asked before, but it's pretty urgent.
My hd 2 awakes right after I put it to sleep (means turning the display off) - it just awakes itself. That drains battery and I can't put it in standby. Looked up settings, there is nothing wrong with the settings.
Vibration also doesn't work anymore, although it's active.
So how can I solve either problem?
Thanks in advance

Doesn't anybody has an idea? It's really annoying and I don't really want to send it to repair, since I don't have the slightest clue, where the bill is :-/
Sent from my refrigerator using Tapatalk
Ok this is odd. I dont know what I did but my HD2 was doing the same thing. I would push the red button to put it to sleep and it would just keep waking up. screen would go off and on. I did a hard reset and its fine now.
Well, I never had that idea...but thanks for the hint, I might as well try that
Sent from my refrigerator using Tapatalk
If it works and it stops doing the nonstop wakeup thing. Please let us know so anyone who has the same problem can find this and know what they can do to fix it.
It just disappeared : o
I don't know how or why, but as I restarted my phone this morning, the issue was just gone and finally it stays in standby without turning on by itself :/
Sent from my refrigerator using Tapatalk
hey at least its gone. now if it happens again you know all you have to do is goto bed and when you wake up restart you phone.

Lol, wouldn't it be awesome to solve every problem that way?
Anyways thanks for your help, guys

For last 2months my scree timeout does not work every time I look at my phone the screen is on therefore draining so much battery.
My timeout is set to 30 seconds so its not that.
I have tried jus about everything from adjusting timeout settings to wiping and flashing numerous roms even going back to stock.
Has anyone else experienced this? Please help
Have you tried turning smart stay off?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Thanks but I never enable smart stay can't believe I am only one who has had this
I know it might sound silly but try rebooting your phone and turn smart stay on, see if the time out works.
Then turn it off again, reason I'm asking is I vaguely remember having a similar problem a while ago but was never sure if it was just a coincidence.

I just bought an s4 today with Verizon. I'm laying here in bed and I noticed something strange which I never saw on my note 2 or my s3. I was reading a Web page with my brightness turned all the way up and it seemed like every 20 secs r so it would get a little dimmer then it would get bright again. I have adjust screen tone turned off. Then I went to settings, display, brightness and I see this message that says something like max brightness had been turned down to avoid overheating. Is this why my screen seemed to be dimming then getting bright again? Yes, the phone was quite warm during all of this. It also only happens when the brightness is turned all the way up.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Its because of the heat if your phone it turned the brightness down. Because it could be a big source if heat. Interesting enough that has never happened to me.
This happens at any brightness I think and not related to heat- some of the main browsers have a slight auto adjust brightness even if the phone setting is turned off. I read it a few times so I assume it is that. I see this as well using Chrome.
In a dark room, have brightness to middle or something, and be on a light/white web page in Chrome.Pull the notification bar down and without really noticing, the screen will get slightly brighter due to the darker color. But drag the bar back up and instantly you can barely see the screen go back slightly darker again for the browser.
It was happening using any app not just a browser. I literally sat here and didn't touch the screen at all and I could see it go from bright to dimmer then to bright.. Back and forth..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
And I've seriously never seen that message about brightness being turned down on my s3 or note 2. I don't even know why my s4 is so warm right now..

guys, it's a heat issue.
when the phone reaches a certain temp (i believe it's around 35 degrees C), it automatically dims down your display, no matter waht the brightness. you can be on 0 brightness, and it will dim anything that's a bright page, like a bright white.
test it by doing this: be in the browser when you notice it dim, and tap on the URL bar to bring up the keyboard...notice how bringing up the keyboard restores the brightness to what it was before that? that's because now the screen isn't engulfed in a super bright white screen..now it's divided between half bright white, and half darker from the keyboard, so it thinks "okay, the screen isn't fully white now, so we can go back to original brightness."
i suppose another way of showing why this is, which is much easier and idk why i didn't write this first lol but go into the brightness control in the display menu when it does it, and notice how it says "screen birghtness will be lowered to reduce risk of overheating" or soemthing. it only says that when you hit a certain temp.
the phone gets really hot, period. that's just how the S4 is unfortunately. so you may notice this happening often; i do lol
My phone does this too. I was wondering why it was doing this too. I guess the heat issue makes sense.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
Yeah dude that's exactly what the message said and I've never seen that before in my other phones. Don't understand why it got so hot? I wasn't even doing much... So the s4 naturally just gets warmer? My note 2 never got this warm, ever. I just want to make sure mine isn't messed up...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
I also turned the phone off for like 10mins and it feels much cooler now but that message is still there.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
My s4 does not really ever get hot and I charge while tethering all the time (same process would heat my s3 up)
Have you disabled the adapt display and adaptive backlight settings.
This was happening when I was charging it actually. It felt pretty damn hot. I turned off auto adjust but Idk what the other one is that you said.

Is there anyway I can check the tempature of the phone?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
System monitor lite
I'd really like to know what I'm still getting that message.. Phone barely feels warm..

Here's what mine says. I just downloaded it and went to tempature.

Seems like it's working perfect now... Hasn't got warm at all. Maybe it just did that one time bcuz it was the first couple hours it's ever been used and the first time it's ever been charged?

Also check for the "Screen mode". It is under Settings -> My device Tab -> Display -> Screen mode
I usually leave it at Professional photo for less saturated but more accurate color rendering. If you check "Adapt display" or "Dynamic" it will try to adjust contrast based on scene displayed which may look like brightening and dimming of display, if you had "Auto adjust screen tone" unchecked.
What does the auto button do?

I did notice that my s4 was warmer when i first got it than now... like i was almost hitting 40 often and now i hardly ever hit 35. don't know if it's because I ran a custom rom or not, or the phone was just settling. but yeah my first days with it I was worried

why? very hot or cold
During a call my screen turns off like normal but just recently when it turns off, I can't turn it back on even when pressing the power or home button. There are rare occasions where even when I'm not on the phone, I can't turn the screen on.. It always results in a battery pull then it works fine again. My phone was normal and working perfectly and I haven't done any mods.. Kinda weird, anyone with input on this?
I'm rooted running version 2 Jbomb, 2.3 beastmode kernel, mj4. Could it maybe be these apps that cause this, lux, gravity screen, light flow.. Those are the 3 main apps that are always running.

Sounds like you may have some gremlins. I would do a clean install of your ROM and install those 3 apps 1 at a time checking for the problem to repeat. Joshes ROMs are typically very clean. Could be the Beastmode kernel also.

Nope. Most likely dirt in your proximity sensor. Try blowing real hard in the ear piece or use one if those air cans. Mine does the same and it sounds like a lot of people have the same issue
Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I can guarantee it's. Gravity Screen. I use both Lux and Gravity Screen and I'm on a Nexus 4. Google brought me here. I was hoping I'd find something in the gravity screen thread but search isn't picking anyone talking about it.
fwiw I only use it for the Keep Screen On by motion so any the other features are unchecked.
I also use an app called screebl which is more reliable and has been around much longer but I flip between the two.
Screebl also got completely rewritten recently so I'm thinking it's probably the more reliable of the two since it's been around longer.
Aside from that I'm thinking it might be the Running During Call checkbox since it's the only other checkbox checked.
I'd disabled the other settings by moving the sliders to zero (per the developer) and unchecking everything but the 2 checkboxes for keeping screen on by motion-left its slider at 50.
...so either uncheck that ringer checkbox. If that doesn't work it's a bug with the app.
It's inherent to almost any Samsung phone. My SII did it. My S4 did it. My Note 3 does it.
It has to do with the proximity sensor changing too quickly.

Sometimes it cuts both ways, with the rare occasion of the screen not waking up when a call comes in. If you're running deep sleep app, sometimes that can be the culprit. I still use it, though.
