How I got ISIS working with root enabled - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I wanted to edit this post and change it to what I found was still the easiest way to keep root easily and use ISIS.
Use OTA Root Keeper. - Use the "Temp Unroot" inside, then restore root when you are ready. I have not found another temp unroot app that works with ISIS.
VooDoo OTA Root Keeper
I pulled apart the APK with the APKTool and even after removing the check for SU it would not work with root enabled. I have installed google wallet and have changed the NFC.apk so this may have something to do with it. If I can get this working I will post it up here.
Thanks everyone for the responses and the ideas.

I wanted to share how I was able to keep root and get ISIS working. Since I live on JambaJuice here in Salt Lake ISIS the buy one get one free has been awesome! Please let me know if this works for everyone and I will try some things to help out if I can.
1. Installed root (I know it probably didnt need to be said, but...) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
2. Installed ISIS, (opened it and recieved error) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.isis.mclient.verizon.activity&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5pc2lzLm1jbGllbnQudmVyaXpvbi5hY3Rpdml0eSJd
3. Installed Voodoo OTA Root keeper https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsIm9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ..
4. Run Voodoo OTA and backup root
5. Open SuperSU, go to menu and select uninstall root
6. Rebooted phone
7. Checked ISIS and it was working (if you have not, set up isis here)
8. Opened Voodoo restored root
9 Installed superuser (my prefered SU tool) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
10. Opened to info tab (swipe all the way to the left)
11. Click on the binary, this should open an update page
12. Run update
13. Have root and ISIS.
*note this seems to hold through one reboot but after second reboot I had to either rename the su file or unroot again. - Working on a solution for this. I really just need to pull the APK apart and see where it checks for SU

I posted in the dev forum last night asking how to bypass Isis's root checker but have not gotten any hits. I'm in Salt Lake as well. Before root, I couldn't even register an account. Local store said there was an issue with the Note 2. Have you been able to successfully create and account? And does the app still work when you launch once you've restored root?
Thanks for the info.
---------- Post added at 02:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:38 PM ----------
Didn't work for me. Followed the steps, and after the reboot after the binary update, opening Isis I get the root notification. And, after doing the unroot and rebooting, my phone says "damaged SD card". I'm praying that something didn't get corrupted.
---------- Post added at 03:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:58 PM ----------
That just gave me the scare of a lifetime! I had to use windows chkdsk to repair my SD card! Whew... Anyway, Isis is still unhappy.
---------- Post added at 03:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
More notes. All Isis is doing is looking for /system/bin/su. If I rename su to let's say sk, it works fine.
My question, other than a new app not being able to gain root access, is there any harm in leaving the "su" bin renamed during normal operation?

Hey fellow SLC XDAers!
This is great, thank you. I'm going to try this tonight. I didn't ask specifically for a ISIS sim when i bought this through BestBuy. My bet is I have to go to a store for a sim first.

I load it once before the update binary, and found it works more often if you do not reboot at the end. I was able to reboot once, but on the 2nd reboot it would not allow me to access ISIS.

In renaming my su folder, I've now lost root access. The binaries are there I just can't rename the folder to make it work again. Anyone have suggestions as to how to rename the su bin folder?

Do you stil have to live in the salt lake city area to do this? Im in chicago and i know this isn't a test area for it

Same here, I'm from Chicago and I can download it but once I open it says not compatible.

Hah, didn't think that one through did you?
Can you mount as external storage and access that way, or does that only show the sdcard?
adb might be able to reach it also.

I thought I could rename it through adb shell after the fact. No dice. No worries. Re-Odin'd and I'm back in business.
And... Isis is no longer working. So it's looking for either system/bin/su or system/xbin/su. Where in the apk is that checker and can we remove it.

I haven't. I couldn't get it to work Beans Rom, then i went with the stock deodexed rom and still haven't had success.

Root explorer will get rid of SU
You have to delete from 3 places in the system section I just can't remember which 3. I did it on the TF101 and it works
Your dont need root to do it but you may need the paid version of Root Explorer

i have application can ROOT & UNROOT all Android Tablets & smartphone.
i have test it in asus prime and its amazing.
download it from this link

if you need more information please visit this link.

good luck.
Depending on how you rooted, the superuser app is probably installed to /system. If this is the case then you can only remove it by doing a full root followed by an unroot.

I tried using the viperMod and I still couldnt get su permission, what is wrong. It is in the system files and I tried deleting them with the ROOT Explorer app stated above and nothing worked. What am I doing Wrong?
EDIT: sorry I didn't notice that jmikeb92 was not the OP. So this post probably makes no sense.
--
If I were you I'd root using mempodroid, install the su binary, then use a terminal shell to remove all traces of root (ie: superuser apk, busybox, su).
Another thing you can do is check the permissions on your su binary. Not sure where vipermod puts it, probably in /system/xbin. Check that it is setuid at least. If it is not, that's your problem. In this case gain root using mempodroid and setuid the sucker.

No it is not difficult but you would need some knowledge of linux security. For example what setuid/setgid is, how to change file ownership, how to change file permissions.
There are lots of resources out there if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Hi,
I had this problem and spent hours before I could figure out how to remove Superuser.
Maybe you can try this method:
First, download Root Browser Lite from the market. It's like Root Explorer, but it's free and can work with both rooted and unrooted device. Then, open it and go to system>app. Inside the folder, delete the file 'Superuser.apk'. When it's done, power off to restart the phone.
If that doesn't work, you can do what I did. Search for Superuser in the market and try to uninstall from there. It may take a while. After that if the dead shortcut still appears in the app drawer, you can just reboot the phone and it'll be gone.
For those whose phones are rooted and have Titanium Backup, you can use that to delete the file, too.
Hope it helps.

open drawer, put your finger on the superuser app and hold for a few sec. After drawer goes away, keep on holding it. You will see "App Info" at the top of your screen. Move the superuser there and menu will pop up. Clear cash and disable the app. Now it should be gone.
I hope i helped you

[TOOL][APK ROOT]SparkyRoot Apk root method

This APK root method is currently based on the busybox exploit that rhcp0112345 found, so thanks to him. I currently do not have a donation link in the app for him, but I will add one if he sends me the link and anybody can jump over to his original post if they would like.
This is an interim step of this app as I have been trying to finish a more complicated root method, since this one is most likely to get patched shortly. Also, in future updates I will be adding an unroot method as well as possible rootkeeper type functionality and depending on feedback I may add a quick install for the unlock tool.
The steps are similar to the PC version except it only requires a button press to perform the step.
1. Install this app (SparkyRoot)
2. Click step 1, Exploit (will move the files around and replace the busybox file)
3. Click step 2, Open up the ASUS App Backup tool and backup an app (you can use this one, its small)
4. Return to this app and Click step 3 Install SuperUser (will install the SuperUser app)
5. Click step 4, Cleanup (will cleanup all of the temporary files and revert the busybox file)
6. Profit???
UPDATE: 3/3/2012 - v1.1 - enhancements
Added a button for opening the backup app.
Updated SuperUser app to the latest version (you would have gotten a market update anyway)
Added indicators for if the su binary is there and if it has the proper read/execute permissions
Added indicator for if the SuperUser app is installed
UPDATE: 3/5/2012 - v1.2 - minor update
Added donation link for rhcp0112345
He also requested that I put his link in this thread so here are those
(TF101) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515470
(TF201) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518429
UPDATE: 3/18/2012 - v1.3 – enhancement/fix
Fixed issue where if you have never opened the app backup tool before the rooting would fail due to not accepting the terms of service
Added an unroot option (the current method requires superuser installed so that it can grant this app permission to unroot)
From comments below, it appears that there may be an issue with checking you root access in correlation to Root Checker and BusyBox. I have never installed either of these apps on my device and have never seen the issue. To help clear some of this up I have added a check into my app that will tell you if the files are all set up properly, with proper permissions.
Also, make sure the SuperUser app is running in the background so that it can give root access to apps that you specify (if it is not running, your device will appear to not be rooted).
If you are having any issues, and you are using these apps, I would recommend that you uninstall them prior to rooting and then reinstall them after you have finished running the app to root the device and then reboot the device.
FYI
This root app has been confirmed working on certain versions of the ASUS Transformer (TF101), Transformer Prime (TF201), Transformer (TF300) Devices.
This includes
v9.4.2.15 for the TF201
v9.2.1.11 for the TF101
v9.4.3.17 for the TF300
This method (as it is currently implemented) no longer works with:
v9.4.2.21 for the TF201
v9.2.1.17 for the TF101
v9.4.3.26 for the TF300
To root on one of these non-supported ROM versions, please use this new root tool I have created.

I have been making a few changes tonight:
1. button to launch the backup app (instead of searching for the icon)
2. indicator of if the su file exists with correct permissions
3. indicator of if the SuperUser app is installed
These should take care of showing you if it has successfully rooted. I will update the OP with the new version once I am done.
Followed all steps and didnt get rooted. Busybox and titanium said no root access after tryin this app.
mine did that too until i used the root checker tool. then titanium and root explorer gave me root access.

Stuffed around for a while after installing this app and tried to confirm root access. Seemed that some apps reckoned I had root and some not so much.
Went to market and installed 'Busybox' by STEPHEN (STERICCSON) and root was perfect after this. Even 'Voodoo OTA RootKeeper' was happy after installing Busybox.
Edit: Forgot to mention. I have a TF201 running Android 4.03, Build 9.4.2.15
Thanks for sharing another way of rooting. I do love Viperboy's work. However, vipertime installed it's own version of busybox, and somehow caused the Asus backup application failing to function. It's always nice to know that there's another way to root.
And Please, do add on an Unroot option, and it'll be all perfect.

Yup, they reset permissions on /system, /system/bin, and /system/xbin. The backup will need to be in a location that they don't explicitly reset permissions for during an update. For anybody who is curious, you can pop open the dlpkgfile and look at updater-script in the directory META-INF\com\google\android\. At the very end of the file you can see all of the permissions that get reset.

Not sure what you are getting at here. Does what you said mean they can move the file to another folder that does not have permissions changed prior to the update and keep root? or does it need to be in system to work?
Something strange is going on here, i restored root with OTA root keeper, everything worked well and when i check status it states that my device is rooted and root permission granted.
Titanium Backup works perfectly as well, but other apps like Gesture Control are unable to get root access and when i run a root checker app it says that I dont have proper root access. Is there a way to fix this? Or is my root lost? I still have some hope as it works fine with TB
Stuff i'm still able to do:
-Temp unroot/reroot with OTA root keeper
-delete SU backup and make a new one
-Use Titanium Backup
-Use any root explorer i've tested so far, i can also access /data folder!
-Use Terminal emulator
-Also the file system/bin/SU is present.
What i cant do:
-app: gesture control
-update my SU binary with superuser app
-update my busybox using BusyBox free from play store

Check the root thread in the development forum. Somebody in there has a method for regaining full root for the folks who were lucky enough to have partial root like you after the update. Can't test it myself but it sounds promising.

If you backed up before voodoo was update with the new location (or you OTAed to .30 since the last backup), it is possible that you may lose root.
To be safe you may want to delete and re-backup the root from within voodoo before you update.

Could you be more clear on that? Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper v.2.0.3 does not have an option for "deleting the root". There is a "delete su backup" button, and "temp. un-root" one. Could you clarify which of those should be used and in what order? And can others confirm that this method will keep the root after the Jelly Bean OTA update - or is it still a hit or miss?

Could you be more clear on that? Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper v.2.0.3 does not have an option for "deleting the root". There is a "delete su backup" button, and "temp. un-root" one. Could you clarify which of those should be used and in what order? And can others confirm that this method will keep the root after the Jelly Bean OTA update - or is it still a hit or miss?

Good to know. I just want my root back. I'm starting to freak out!
1. If I do unlock, is it possible to gain root? If so, how?
2. Is anyone working on a ROM based on our JB FW?

Can't root phone

Go to irc lg-optimus-g channel. I think if you lgnspt to the .tot file that is there you can root it
sent from the best phone ever
the same thing happened to me. I think the update they sent my phone that auto updated, p[ut me on the new software so I can't root my phone. I downloaded super su thinking it was rooted, but when i open the app there are no applications in the apps section and no logs in the logs section, etc... Now I can't delete the supersu app.
Any help from anyone in these forums would be great!
Did you try a root app to see if it worked for you like titanium backup.

anyone tried voodoo rootkeeper before update ?
OP, go into the IRC channel. go to webchat.freenode.net. Fill out your nickname and copy "#lg-optimus-g" without the quotes into the "Channels" text entry field. Fill out the "captcha" and join the channel. Eventually someone like Shelnutt2 or IOMonster_work/IOMonster_desk, or someone like them will help you. I'd wager that it's not impossible to root your phone, and that after you root it you should unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery so that it's impossible for the LG/AT&T OTA updates to break your root, since the LG FOTA utility uses the stock proprietary to flash the OTA.

How block OTA update messages/install after root?

I got a new S4 today and am going to root it this evening.
My phone did already download and try to install the update, but I postponed until 1 PM tomorrow and left the "automatic" option unchecked.
After I root - what's the method on the S4 to block the phone from trying to install the OTA update?
Thanks.
SOLUTION: As you'll read below, rename or freeze SDM.apk and you will block OTA reminders/update.
Download titanium back up and try to freeze SDM ,I believe in order to freeze you may have to purchase the pro version but it's worth it. Let us know if that works for you

OK, thanks, I'll give that a whirl. I've owned TiBU since the very early days, so no problem there.
This was just posted in a thread in the S4 General section:
"Vooddo will not work. Root and freeze or rename with .bak after these files under system apps the SDM.apk and fwupgrade.apk "
Did that work for you?

I did the same thing. Thank God for the folks at XDA. I froze SDM 1.0. I want to rename the apk to. Bak so I can still be made aware of 4.3 when it ota's.

I believe this is the file to rename from SDM.apk to SDM.bak, right?

Should we also rename FWUdate.apk?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
I mean FWUpgrade.apk, sorry.

All I did was freeze SDM I didn't have to rename anything and I never get any messages about the update.

rooted me7 and s4 still updating, what am I missing
Folks, I seem to be missing something here and I was hoping someone could shed a little light my way. I rooted with the me7 method. Rooted fine, installed superSU and titamium backup pro. Everything went smooth. I froze fwupgrade.apk and sdm.apk. Then I renamed /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak. The I renamed /system/app/wssyncminps.apk to wssyncminps.apk.bak
This morning my phone started updating as soon as I went on wifi. I actually think wifi was off when I shut the phone off last night. Turned the phone on this morning and wifi was already enable and updating. A little spooky for me. So what have I failed to do to stop this phone from updating. I'm very new to this phone stuff so the more detailed info you can give would be highly appreciated.
Thanks all and a special thank you to whom ever made the me7 root method. Light years ahead of me.
Update: cant remember exactly what i was doing but a message popped up and said for security purposes , all updates except for what is available via google play store is blocked. So am I protected from new kernal that would remove root. Also if I uninstall apps will they be reloaded via updates from google play. I searched and dont seem to find these answers. If I missed them sorry.
Update: learning as I go and having a blast. OK I discovered auto update to google apps was set to update automatically on wifi so I fixed that issue but still wondering if it will auto update and reinstall apps I deleted.
Accessing the fwupdate.apk and sdm.apk files
Have looked around in my root directories on my DroidX and cannot locate the fwupdate.apk and sdm.apk files. Understand I can freeze them with Titaniium or just rename them to block OTA updates.
But what directory are they in?
I assume the answer will be the same on newer Android phones, since I am looking to get a Note 3 and want to be sure I have the details straight before I try root with it..
Many thanks!

For those who haven't figured it, the files referenced are not located in the directory. They are system files. Go into settings -> more -> application manager. However, you will not be able to rename or disable them from here. Instead, download NoBloat from the play store. Use this app to disable both.
