How block OTA update messages/install after root? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I got a new S4 today and am going to root it this evening.
My phone did already download and try to install the update, but I postponed until 1 PM tomorrow and left the "automatic" option unchecked.
After I root - what's the method on the S4 to block the phone from trying to install the OTA update?
Thanks.
SOLUTION: As you'll read below, rename or freeze SDM.apk and you will block OTA reminders/update.

Download titanium back up and try to freeze SDM ,I believe in order to freeze you may have to purchase the pro version but it's worth it. Let us know if that works for you

OK, thanks, I'll give that a whirl. I've owned TiBU since the very early days, so no problem there.

This was just posted in a thread in the S4 General section:
"Vooddo will not work. Root and freeze or rename with .bak after these files under system apps the SDM.apk and fwupgrade.apk "

Did that work for you?

Also saw to freeze, rename fwupdate.apk as well in other post

I did the same thing. Thank God for the folks at XDA. I froze SDM 1.0. I want to rename the apk to. Bak so I can still be made aware of 4.3 when it ota's.

I believe this is the file to rename from SDM.apk to SDM.bak, right?

I mean FWUpgrade.apk, sorry.

All I did was freeze SDM I didn't have to rename anything and I never get any messages about the update.

rooted me7 and s4 still updating, what am I missing
Folks, I seem to be missing something here and I was hoping someone could shed a little light my way. I rooted with the me7 method. Rooted fine, installed superSU and titamium backup pro. Everything went smooth. I froze fwupgrade.apk and sdm.apk. Then I renamed /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak. The I renamed /system/app/wssyncminps.apk to wssyncminps.apk.bak
This morning my phone started updating as soon as I went on wifi. I actually think wifi was off when I shut the phone off last night. Turned the phone on this morning and wifi was already enable and updating. A little spooky for me. So what have I failed to do to stop this phone from updating. I'm very new to this phone stuff so the more detailed info you can give would be highly appreciated.
Thanks all and a special thank you to whom ever made the me7 root method. Light years ahead of me.
Update: cant remember exactly what i was doing but a message popped up and said for security purposes , all updates except for what is available via google play store is blocked. So am I protected from new kernal that would remove root. Also if I uninstall apps will they be reloaded via updates from google play. I searched and dont seem to find these answers. If I missed them sorry.
Update: learning as I go and having a blast. OK I discovered auto update to google apps was set to update automatically on wifi so I fixed that issue but still wondering if it will auto update and reinstall apps I deleted.

Accessing the fwupdate.apk and sdm.apk files
Have looked around in my root directories on my DroidX and cannot locate the fwupdate.apk and sdm.apk files. Understand I can freeze them with Titaniium or just rename them to block OTA updates.
But what directory are they in?
I assume the answer will be the same on newer Android phones, since I am looking to get a Note 3 and want to be sure I have the details straight before I try root with it..
Many thanks!

For those who haven't figured it, the files referenced are not located in the directory. They are system files. Go into settings -> more -> application manager. However, you will not be able to rename or disable them from here. Instead, download NoBloat from the play store. Use this app to disable both.

How I got ISIS working with root enabled

I wanted to edit this post and change it to what I found was still the easiest way to keep root easily and use ISIS.
Use OTA Root Keeper. - Use the "Temp Unroot" inside, then restore root when you are ready. I have not found another temp unroot app that works with ISIS.
VooDoo OTA Root Keeper
I pulled apart the APK with the APKTool and even after removing the check for SU it would not work with root enabled. I have installed google wallet and have changed the NFC.apk so this may have something to do with it. If I can get this working I will post it up here.
Thanks everyone for the responses and the ideas.

I wanted to share how I was able to keep root and get ISIS working. Since I live on JambaJuice here in Salt Lake ISIS the buy one get one free has been awesome! Please let me know if this works for everyone and I will try some things to help out if I can.
1. Installed root (I know it probably didnt need to be said, but...) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
2. Installed ISIS, (opened it and recieved error) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.isis.mclient.verizon.activity&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5pc2lzLm1jbGllbnQudmVyaXpvbi5hY3Rpdml0eSJd
3. Installed Voodoo OTA Root keeper https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsIm9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ..
4. Run Voodoo OTA and backup root
5. Open SuperSU, go to menu and select uninstall root
6. Rebooted phone
7. Checked ISIS and it was working (if you have not, set up isis here)
8. Opened Voodoo restored root
9 Installed superuser (my prefered SU tool) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
10. Opened to info tab (swipe all the way to the left)
11. Click on the binary, this should open an update page
12. Run update
13. Have root and ISIS.
*note this seems to hold through one reboot but after second reboot I had to either rename the su file or unroot again. - Working on a solution for this. I really just need to pull the APK apart and see where it checks for SU

I posted in the dev forum last night asking how to bypass Isis's root checker but have not gotten any hits. I'm in Salt Lake as well. Before root, I couldn't even register an account. Local store said there was an issue with the Note 2. Have you been able to successfully create and account? And does the app still work when you launch once you've restored root?
Thanks for the info.
---------- Post added at 02:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:38 PM ----------
Didn't work for me. Followed the steps, and after the reboot after the binary update, opening Isis I get the root notification. And, after doing the unroot and rebooting, my phone says "damaged SD card". I'm praying that something didn't get corrupted.
---------- Post added at 03:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:58 PM ----------
That just gave me the scare of a lifetime! I had to use windows chkdsk to repair my SD card! Whew... Anyway, Isis is still unhappy.
---------- Post added at 03:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
More notes. All Isis is doing is looking for /system/bin/su. If I rename su to let's say sk, it works fine.
My question, other than a new app not being able to gain root access, is there any harm in leaving the "su" bin renamed during normal operation?
Hey fellow SLC XDAers!
This is great, thank you. I'm going to try this tonight. I didn't ask specifically for a ISIS sim when i bought this through BestBuy. My bet is I have to go to a store for a sim first.
I load it once before the update binary, and found it works more often if you do not reboot at the end. I was able to reboot once, but on the 2nd reboot it would not allow me to access ISIS.
In renaming my su folder, I've now lost root access. The binaries are there I just can't rename the folder to make it work again. Anyone have suggestions as to how to rename the su bin folder?

Hah, didn't think that one through did you?
Can you mount as external storage and access that way, or does that only show the sdcard?
adb might be able to reach it also.

I thought I could rename it through adb shell after the fact. No dice. No worries. Re-Odin'd and I'm back in business.
And... Isis is no longer working. So it's looking for either system/bin/su or system/xbin/su. Where in the apk is that checker and can we remove it.

OP, go into the IRC channel. go to webchat.freenode.net. Fill out your nickname and copy "#lg-optimus-g" without the quotes into the "Channels" text entry field. Fill out the "captcha" and join the channel. Eventually someone like Shelnutt2 or IOMonster_work/IOMonster_desk, or someone like them will help you. I'd wager that it's not impossible to root your phone, and that after you root it you should unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery so that it's impossible for the LG/AT&T OTA updates to break your root, since the LG FOTA utility uses the stock proprietary to flash the OTA.

[Q] OTA update failed

I have tried to update my Xperia Z tablet (Wi-Fi Xperia Tablet Z SGP311) but it fails each time. Bootloader is locked, and it is rooted. SuperSU(in survival mode) and the voodoo OTA root keeper are on.
Not sure why it wont flash to 4.2.2 (current stock 4.1.1 rooted).
Also Wondering if I should even bother updating to 4.2.2 this way or try the flashtool kernel workaround doomlord has?
Hello, i've the same problem with my SGP321. SuperSu in survivalmode and rootkeeper installed too.
Sent from my Xperia Tab Z using Tapatalk 4 beta.
Someone else had issues with update not installing, and someone asked if any system files have been modified?
If you do the OTA update only (as you stated), you dont need the OTA rootkeeper, just superuser ticked with survival mode, and SU installed as a system app (in settings menu). Maybe SU and OTA keeper conflicting, maybe OTA modify system files?
If you decide to install SU as system app, it might take several attempts, and several power downs. When I did it, it did not seem to be working, and tooks loads of reboots and attempts

nope, was considering doing that tho
I'm in the same boat. Stock 4.1.2 rooted with su as system app and survival mode on, but nothing else. Install fails every time. Sgp312
I had the same problem. The cause was a modified /system/apps folder. As a solution i copied the missing files from a FTF-File back.
If for example facebook.apk is missing the update will fail.
Oh wow, didn't consider that getting rid of some of the bloat would count. Go figure Facebook would **** it up for me. I don't have a computer anymore at home so I guess I'll start figuring how to get back what I got rid of.
..could anyone upload that system/apps/ folder? In the meantime I guess I can try pulling the ones from the zip of the Japanese stock ROM posted around here..
I can't find any way of extracting a .sin in android
Never mind. Copying the missing files out of the Japanese zip worked and I'm successfully updated!
thanks ill have to do the same it seems, yeah i belive I nailed a good lot of the bloatware :/

[Q] How to prevent further update attempts?

My Galaxy S4 is rooted and running VRUAME7.
On advice from this forum, I did the following to prevent further updates:
Frozen via Titanium Backup: FWUpgrade.apk and SDM.apk
Renamed file: /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak
Renamed file: /system/app/ wssyncmlnps.apk to wssyncmlnps.apk.bak
The phone still downloads a system update almost every day, then displays this message:
Software update unsuccessful
Sorry, there was a problem updating your SAMSUNG SCH-I545. No changes were made.

Don't need to odin. Just simply download the apk, copy it from your SD card and paste it in your system/app folder. Once pasted, change permission to -rw -r -r. Now you'll see it in your app drawer.
