Sadly after having my new Note 2 a good 6 days it fell from a foot and a half, hit the front corner of the screen where the glass is weakest, and completely shattered.
I was pretty devastated and it's currently costing me $180 to replace through samsung.
Silver lining of it all though? No more ugly Verizon button!

No insurance, even if I did I'd only be saving $50 more dollars through Verizon, and inevitably they'd probably put that button back on it. Just preordered the otterbox defender and do not plan to have this issue again
I have the same case, and it is fairly robust. Other then an otterbox, I can't imagine there will be something much better out there for protecting the device.

the phones biggest flaw is that outer edge. they should made the outter edge a hard rubber. that covers the flat face of the screens corner.

that would be awesome but then they dont make money from broken screens/scrateches/wear and tear
Did you purchase your Note 2 using a credit card? Many credit cards have automatic protection against damage and theft for the first 3 months after purchase.
I remember buying a brand new laptop and dropping it after about a month requiring $600 of out of warranty repair. My American Express card credited back the cost of the repair, all I had to do was call them to file a claim, them submit a copy of the repair billing receipt. Just Google "**card name ** accidental damage purchase protection"
My mom is a Nurse so she gets a hefty discount on Verizon, so I transferred the money to her account. She may actually have protection on her card! I'm going to investigate. Thanks for the tip.
Also, Otterbox Defender came out today, so I should expect that in the mail around the time my Note 2 is returned.

They do. It's called a TPU case.
I cannot believe the screen shattered like that with the protective plus case on from the 1.5 foot drop. I guess we all need the defender then since no matter how carefull you r bound to drop your phone at least once in the two years of ownership.

Was at work today and put my Note carefully in a drawer in the OR. Then my nurse pulls the whole drawer out, and the whole thing falls out with my 1 day old precious Note landing on the floor as a end result. Thankfully my $5 TPU case saved the day. My heart skipped more than just a beat. Hopefully no one else scratches up their new toy.

Mine was in my pocket when I reclined in my new Lazy-Boy chair. It slid out of my pocket like it was greased with butter, fell through the chair and onto the hard wood floor (OK, Pergo...). I have since ordered a rubberized case to hopefully slow it down a bit!

dropped mine right when i got home. im lucky it hit my cat and the floor. He isn't hurt and neither is my precious note. i guarantee if it hit my floor it would have cracked.
The first 30 minutes of having the phone I bought a Case & Screen protector. I remember the first day of having my infuse I got a scratch on the screen and a scratch on the side and I was so angry at myself for not protecting from day 1.
Well, I have a good story. I was washing dishes in the kitchen (you can see where this is going) and has the Note propped up on the drip edge of the counter watching basketball. I left the kitchen to ask my wife a question. When I came back no more than 15 seconds later my Note was gone!!!!!
I was like did my 4 yr old take it. No... I look down in the sink and it was in a pot I was washing that was FULL of water and my Note is at the bottom with the screen on. I grabbed it out and quickly pulled off the case and got the battery out. Dried it off and prayed it was OK.
After further inspection the Speck case it was in kept a lot of water out. None of the water marks turned red and I'm happy to report it works fine.

I dropped mine this morning very much like they did on Android Authority and it had an Incipio Sylicrilic case. The phone fell with the screen hitting a hard granite floor first and I wasn't worried because of the case. I spent a couple of weeks with the phone dangling around between change and keys and lots of things in my pockets and it didn't show a single scratch yet. If you use a kind of bumper that dissipates some energy you will be fine mate.
testamony......lol
now up to 7 drops....all waist height and above. the screen is scratchless and crackless
now the silver bumper.....thats a different story, it looks like a phone i have had for OVER a year.
oh yea, NO CASES or Screen Protectors are on my phone.
i have been VERY IMPRESSED with the glass
i have had the s1 2 and 3 (the s2 being the most durable). The s3 definitely needs a case in my opinion, unless of course you never drop your phone. It only takes one awkward bounce on a solid surface for it to shatter.
The weakest point on the S3 screen is the glass under the home button, it`s very thin and narrow, and can be broken just by pressing the home button area a little too hard.
John.
Thank you all guys!
You are a great help!!
So this TPU case i got should be okay?
I heard the TPU cases are very good energy absorbers...
Put it this way, the S3 uses Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner yet supposedly more durable. In my ecoerience I have never had a Gorilla Glass display break on me, but that's certainly not to say one wouldn't, i've just been lucky.

Obviously when people drop their phone they gonna be pissed off and some are gonna make a lot of noise about how bad the phone is, but the fact is the first month of S1 and S2 were exactly the same so right now it's hard to tell if it's got really bad glass or just really pissed off customers.

One fall from desk height, 2 feet on something hard, that's all it took for me. I had an HTC 2 years. That would not have broken. The thing is extremely easy to break! Incredibly easy, in fact.
1 drop from waist height was all it took to kill my s3, small crack in the bottom left hand corner and screen wont even turn on, and no touch input.
This was really disappointing for me, my s1 and s2 have both been through a million times more. It's one of the reasons i love samsung phones.
They don't break. I was really disappointed by the s3. I'm back to abusing my s2 now with a really pretty brick on my desk.
I was going to get the note II but considering its basically a larger s3 I'm guessing the durability will be just as poor

Had my phone for 5 days, while shopping for a case, dropped it 1 foot onto floor, shattered the glass to pieces. It's off to Samsung for repairs, not sure how much $$$ it's gonna cost to repair, and also I have now lost my warranty due to breaking the glass, so hopefully the phone doesn't crap out in the next 3 years of my contract. Oh and btw, I had an S1 with a cheapy case, dropped many times, no cracks whatsoever, so I truly believe the glass is much weaker. My suggestion would be to get a case, but which one is going to protect it, I am very concerned now.

i just dropped from my bed my Galaxy and the ultra mighty gorila glass cracked but the touch and the screen are fine, no leaks or whatever, i just need to know what i have to buy to fix this mess
i found the digitizer LCD Display and Touch Screen not included that cost $18 dollars
or the full lcd touch combo that cost $239 dollars
as i said the touch is 100% working and the lcd doesnt have any leaks
i have searched similar topics but the other cases have broke lcd
thanx in advance :good:
Just found this video, i think im going to buy only the glass, the other solution is to expensive with 239 dollars i can get a new s3 with my mobile plan
So sorry for your phone man. I guess since the touch still works you will only need the front glass. To be honest i'm looking forward to see the answer of your question, since i never understood properly how the digitizer and the front glass work. Always thought they were the same.

You will need to buy them both. I have completed this repair numerous times for friends and family, and the digitizer will break close to 99% of the time.
I do consider myself very tedious and patient, but it is glued to the screen and there's a pretty slim chance of it coming off in one piece.
You can heat it up and try to get it as soft as possible, but it's super sticky.
Do yourself a favour and buy them both or else you're going to be waiting for a digitizer to come once you've started the repair process.
Hope this helps.

The newer supposed "thinner and stronger" Gorilla Glass thst is on S3 is nowhere near as scratch and crack resistant as the thicker original on phones like the OG Epic. This one can get those hairline scratches much easier thsn the original. Dont try the key scratch test on the S3. I will say this though, i have 2 i9300s. One new in box and the one i use has the back cover with the white flap that covers the screen. I dropped it 2x from 4 feet on concrete and only a slight scuff on the silver side bezel

Guys, for real, why does everyone think that gorilla glass is crack resistant? I mean, than bigger a screen gets than easier it can break, this is physics...
Gorilla glass more about to be scratch-resistant.
and in the case of OP I would buy a new screen and then be more careful with my phone. I just got a cheap silicon case and it protects my phone from everything without needing a screen protector.

I'd buy the digitizer for $18, worst case LCD breaks whilst separating and you'll need to buy the complete unit. Best case you fix it and save yourself $225 on complete unit.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
From my personal experience, i'd say you'd better buy the complete unit with the glass, the digitalizer and lcd pre-assembled on the frame. I've bougth a 2 week old GT-i9300 from a friend who had dropped it and had also the problem with the sim card blocked inside and just broke the sim card reader to take it out... As i said, i've managed to have it at a really good price and bought the lcd unit (samsung original on e-bay) and believe me, you will save yourself a lot of work as the gorilla glas is glued to the digitalizer witch is also part of the oled screen, witch makes it almost impossible to take the gorilla glass without breaking the rest, or, even if you manage to get it out, you'll never glue it again without any air trapped between the two... just look on ebay, i found mine for 163€.
I have the same problem as the OP. Dropped my SGS III couple of days ago and screen cracked though I still have 100% touch screen functionality. I am planning to get it fixed though have to say that incident has made me lose confidence in the sgs3. My sgs2 was such a solid piece of abuse taker. Over one year of use and dropping on concrete and worse on a number of occasion all without a scratch. Right now I am considering the HTC One X maybe it's using the old guerilla glass which seems more durable.

Oh yuck! I am soooo paranoid I am going to break mine, I just got it tonight and the protector is coming in the mail. I might leave it at home and just keep using the Droid 4 in the mean time until it comes in.
Have you seen if there are any "phone fix it" shops that can replace the glass that is cracked? (I am assuming it is the glass that is cracked and not the screen itself, right?) My coworker dropped his Rezound and shattered the glass and got it replaced for a little over $100. Granted, the Rezound is a smaller phone, but it might not be much more. It will be cheaper than a new phone, that's for sure. Also, my IT manager just cracked his GS3 and replaced the glass himself with a heatgun and only spent $27 for the new glass and the tools needed, if you think you can do it yourself.
Unfortunately, I cracked mine as well. Landed face flat on a concrete floor as I was pulling it out. I didn't have my case on like a moron, so it's my own fault. Because I don't have insurance I was planning on calling Samsung to see how much the repair would cost, but I'm worried about the price because of the Wacom digitizer. It'd also make repair from local shops harder to do. What do you guys think?
I just contacted Samsung for a friend a couple weeks ago and the screen repair with parts and labor was just over 190 bucks. You can get a quote using the Samsung online chat, just have your emei number ready because they use that to generate the quote.
Edit: He already got his phone back and it appears they just gave him a new one. I think he was only without it like 10 days or so.
I know how you feel. Mine fell out of my purse when I got out of the car. I had on a wallet style case that leaves the top and bottom exposed. It flew open when it dropped. The chrome ring has a huge ding and screen crack on the bottom right. Everything works fine. It's just painful emotionally.
Here's what I found. Radio Shack can repair them. It has to be sent out. $70.00 to $90.00 for the glass, the chrome would be a little extra. Takes a couple weeks. They offer a lifetime warranty against defects (not droppage).
Another local cell phone company can do it on site. You pay a deposit, they order the parts and get them within 2 days, $290.00.
I didn't check with Samsung, but from this thread, it looks like it's worth checking with them also.

i have the same style case and mine flung open and left it all exposed, i basically have the same style damage as you.
Thanks everyone for your insight! helps a lot. i will go to radio shack or check out samsung shortly!
Just get on eBay you can get the glass and digitizer for around $200. Then its easy to fix from there. Also I suggest an urban armor gear case, I dropped mine from about chest level it bounced and landed face down I thought for sure it broke. Picked it up the case has a few scuffs but the phone is perfect plus this case isn't as bulky as otter box.

If you have always carried insurance with verizon, i would ask to speak with a supervisor. I have had insurance with vzw since the blackberry days. When i purchased a thunderbolt off contract a couple of years ago, i activated it in the store and the rep took my insurance off my line. A few months later the phone fell and broke. I was told i did not have insurance and i made mention that i have always carried insurance. The end result was they added insurance back on my line and vzw sent me a replacement phone.

Nice! Glad you got a nice easy solution.
Edit: Most definitely the cheapest one too!
I've done quite a few of these videos. I'm no professional. Read the directions and use common sense. I have never had issues.
After I began using glass screen protectors, I have mixed feelings about ZAGG products. There are pros and cons to each. Feel free to comment and/or ask questions.
One thing, I am sure of is that an unprotected phone will get scratched if you place it in a pocket with keys or change. Even the sapphire on my dad's old Rolex is capable of being scratched.
EDIT: Added some stuff about the S pen and the marks it leaves behind.
Does the S-Pen have any issues working through the Invisible Shield? I read some Amazon reviews for the Note 2's version and there were complaints about that.

I had one on my Note 2 and it would leave ugly lines in it and it just wasn't smooth to use. We just got one here at my Job at Radioshack that is the HD Zagg and it's supposed to be better so I'm going to try that one for $10. If it doesn't feel good I'll probably just go with the Spigen Glass shield.
I have the HD Zagg screen protector and I am very satisfied with it
after getting my note 3 on Saturday... I bought the Zagg.. and the guy at BB installed it for me...
that night.. I had my phone on the end table in the living room. I reached over from the couch to pick up my phone and the phone fell on the floor.
Dont know what it fell on (lego, army men, etc... whatever the kids left out) but now I have a dent in the upper left corner...
I had to go to Zagg and register as it is a lifetime warranty...all i can say right now is I am not impressed so not sure if $26 was worth it for this thing since at day 1 it has a ding...

Just wondering what kind of ding? Like an indention or? Have a picture. Just curious to see the damage. I've never registered my ZAGG for a warranty, but I have gotten one replaced under warranty. Their social media page is helpful if you have issues as well from what I remember.

ill take a pic from either my S2 later or wifes iphone... I do really like it other than me doing that to it so early.... :good:
Looks like S Pen marks don't go away for a very long time...
Added an additional video to the original post. It's definitely time for a glass screen protector. Again, if you are prone to dropping the phone, the glass is more susceptible to damage.
