In short, I got the very new S3alpha (Japan only) a couple of days ago, tried to root it, ****ed it up. I can still flash in Odin, though.
My friend just bought the same phone, on the same network. How do we go about extracting his stock ROM, so that I can flash it to my phone? If I wait for official firmware to show up online, it could be months. Seriously.
Anyone have any experience in this?

That is not the GT-I9300 or 9305 if it was from here that could be why you bricked.
Now thats out of the way try checkfus downloader it allows you to download firmware from the Samsung servers, Faryaab at least knows how to dump firmware as well if you can't find one.
And finally don't Flash anything from here or you will brick the S3 alpha had different hardware the only place you will see roms and rooting is on Japanese sites.

You will have to adb your friend's mobile and pull all the files inside the system directory.. You can then extract the modem using adb or terminal emulator.. The commands are there in my guide.. I don't know about the boot.img though..
Search for it.. Once you have everything create a tar archive with it.. There are many guides for it..
Or you can get all the above files from the nandroid backup of your friend except the modem.. Extract modem separately.. Then pack it in to a tar archive.. Flash with Odin..
Most importantly your friend's device must be rooted before doing any of this
Do a proper research first..

It sounds like I'm screwed, then. I don't imagine there'll be a rooting solution for this phone for a good while yet (no one bothers to work on methods to root Japanese variants). That's why I'm in this situation in the first place; I was trying to root the same phone. Boo hoo.
The reason I tried using standard S3 methods was because those same methods work on the Japanese S2LTE. I was under the (false) impression that they must be fairly interchangeable.
Why asking questions in the general forums?. Thread moved.

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this Forum and very new to Android. I have the Galaxy S2 and while attempting to install Clock Work Mod, following the instructions from GalaxyS2Root, all of a sudden the phone locked up at the Samsung Galaxy S2 sceen with the yellow exclamation mark and that's as far as I got.
With great difficulty, I can get into the recovery screen, but I haven't got a clue, what I can do from here.
Is the phone recoverable, or have I just destroyed a brand new phone? I don't have a rom zip on my sd card, so I couldn't install a new rom from the card.
I have tried everything to get it going again, but I think the more things I try, the worse it gets. I think I have now wiped the existing rom off completely and wiped the caches, all because I was panicing.
I even thought of removing my sd card, putting it into my wifes Galaxy Ace and downloading a replacement rom to it and then try to install the new rom back to my phone.
But guys, I'm really panicing here and don't know what to do!!
Can anybody please help me out, or do I now throw a brand new phone into the garbage?
Thank You.............dixie (Help Please)

Just flash a new firmware via odin.It will be new again
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Hello,
You could try downloading the rom required and install using odin.
You will need to make sure you get the right version for your phone and use odin to flash.
I've not done exactly what you have before I got into a simple boot loop and had to re flash. Live and learn I guess!

Thanks for your reply,
But how do I connect my phone to Odin and what menu should the phone be in, in the recovery mode?
Doesn't the phone have to be in the download mode?
I can only seem to get into the basic recovery mode, ie volume up + power + home keys.
Regards..............dixie.
Have you tried to get into download mode (volume down + home + power)?
You should be able to do that if you can get into recovery. Once in download mode, connect to your PC, start Odin and choose PDA, then select the tar that you have downloaded (it will be in zip form until you unpack it).
Read some threads about Odin/Download mode before you start and make sure you are happy to proceed.

O'k I did as you told me, but the first strange thing is, when I extract the zip file I get the following: boot.bin, cache, factory fs, hidden, modem.bin, param.lfs, Sbl.bin and zImage.............there is no exe type file!!!
However if I open odin, click on PDA and enter the whole zip file location and press start, everything goes ahead as planned.
I get a "Pass" and the phone restarts, I get the small tune and the blue moving lights on the screen, but then it just jams up, on the S Samsung Galaxy S2 screen. That's as far as the boot sequence goes.......frozen on the Galaxy S2 Screen!!
Any suggestions?
Regards......................dixie.
Pull out the battery, wait a few seconds replace and try to boot again. If that doesn't work, check you have the correct firmware to flash and try again with Odin.
Or have a look at this thread:

Right, for starters you need to give relevant information if you expect accurate help otherwise you're going to end up screwing your device up.
Which model of S2 do you have?
Which rom do you have? (give link)
Which guide did you follow? (give link)
If you can get into cwm its just a case of "wipe data/factory reset" and then flash custom rom of your choice from sdcard. Just go into cwm>mounts&storage>mount USB (this will mount cards onto PC if connected) so once connected copy your rom across.
I recommend the new wannam lite rom if you want new samsung JB based rom.
If you want to flash via ODIN then you should only be flashing a .tar or .md5 file in PDA section. If your extracting a zip and you get all the files you mentioned in your above reply then you have wrong file.

O'k thank you for your reply and thank you to the others that replied.
I was using an incorrect rom to flash and an incomplete rom at that!
I downloaded a different rom, extracted the files and flashed with odin. Now I am up and running and have the phone back to full woking order.
That was pretty scarery stuff and I thought I had bricked the phone for ever, I guess a little knowledge is helpful but dangerous, if one isn't sure of what they are doing.
Thank you once again for your help, it was much appreciated. I'll contact you again no doubt, next time I create a stuff up.

Hi Guys, one last request. I would like to root the phone and after a considerable amount of reading/research, the root file that I require, seems impossible to find. When I do find it and download, the .rar file is empty except for a zImage file!!!
My phone is the Galaxy S2 i9100 running ICS 4.0.3 Baseband Version i9100XXLPQ Kernel Version 3.0.15-i9100XXLPQ-CL223505 Build Number IML74K.XXLPQ.
I bought this phone, while I was visiting China and it has been great, up until I managed to brick it by accident.
Anyway, I apparently need the CF Root for XXLPQ v5.4, which I have downloaded six times, from various sites and every time I extract, it's empty, except for an image file!!!
I live in Australia and use the Telstra Network.....should I change to a more suitable Firmware, or maybe a stable custom rom, or can someone give me a link, for the appropriate working CF Root file?
Much Appreciate and Thank You........dixie.
Ignore the above post guys, a little more reading and I found my mistake.
However, I am still interested in the suggestion of a Custom Rom, which would work successfully, on Australian Networks.
Cheers to All......dixie.

I'm still new myself here but i'm sure ur phone is already rooted from what u said above. When u boot into recovery does stock recovery load or CWM ? if anything other than stock Samsung recovery then your already rooted.
Also u dont need to unzip the rar file its ready as is.
If ur phone is actually not rooted by far the easiest method is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
u dont need an insecure kernel and theres no risk involved even if u mess up. I was a lil hesitant to root my phone but used that method and all went fine, now i've learned so much in the past 2 weeks i'm flashing other kernels and tried lots of roms.
Peace

Yes thanks for the reply. I discovered that I didn't have to extract the root file, as it was already a .tar (stupid me).
So now I have a rooted phone and the Official ICS version XXLPQ, which is working in Australia, but I have noticed, that most of the time the Network is showing "edge".
All I really have to find now, is a good, stable, custom rom, that will also work in Australia.
A couple of observations....
You don't need "a good stable custom rom that will also work in Australia". Region has nothing to do with how a rom performs/your experience with that rom. If you're having issues with connectivity/you're not happy with data speeds, flashing/trying other modems may help. I suggest you read through this thread, at various times people have discussed which modems have worked well with different carriers (particular modems seem to work well for most people using a particular carrier). You can then search for CWM flashable versions of these modems & test them out until you find one that gives you connectivity you're happy with.
The other observation is you're a bit lacking in the 'basics'. I highly recommend you take the time to read through the guides. Knowing the basics makes it less likely you'll bork your phone at some stage, and that you'll be able to solve any problems that come up in a methodical/logical way (as opposed to guessing).

Use Siyah kernel v6 beta4 instead.
Hey peeps
Ok I've been at this for two straight days now in order to try and unbrick this Telus Fascinate SGH-T959P
My buddy initially attempted to flash it with something and really messed it up to the point that even the battery wouldn't charge.
I don't even care if I get it to stock.. an amazing Rom/Kernel combo will also work.
So this is where I am today... and I have spent the last two days non-stop trying to fix this thing...I have been through sooo many forums posts and websites my brain is about to cook.
Software I am using
Odin v1.7 and v1.83.. I try to use the newest one.. just in case.
ADB / SDK installed and am able to push files across to the sdcard in my phone... everything seems good in that dept
Files that have got me to where I am today
T959TLJL3 Froyo original firmware (apparently)... but can not flash all of the files from the package ..zimage and a few others just fail to flash
s1_odin_20100512.pit file (Have atlas_v2.2.pit also but haven't had as much success with it)
SGH-T959-Stock_plus_voodoo_CwM_2.3.4v2
su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed
I can successfully boot the phone into download mode every single time using the volume up and down while plugging in the usb cable
Also if i just hit the power button I get a Telus 4G / Samsung splash screen and then the phone boots into CwM Voodoo Recovery v3.0.2.8x (Orange??)
In the CwM recovery mode, I can now finally mount all partitions and it looks like things will flash.
Now that I've finally got this phone to this point, I don't want to mess it up.
I want to make sure I have the right files to complete this little project.
Need some direction from the pros.. Am I able to flash a custom rom now ? And if so, what one is best to use.
From this point how can I revert to stock? Do I have the right files ? And how since Odin fails to flash the ones I have.
I figured going to stock first was easier, then use Kies to update it.
Show me the way
Thanks.

Wow... I got it .. Finally... After I figure out exactly what I used for files.. I will let you know.
All I can tell you right now is that I was flashing a single files at a time then powering down and coming back into download mode to flash the next file.
Right now the phone is all booted up and Running Android v2.3.3 (GB LKG2) and even tho the phone is actually a T959P.. the boot screen shows up as a T959D. Interesting.

No single file that I downloaded was able to flash the phone.
I ended up flashing individual files... and kinda had to mix and match, but was able to get the phone booting back into Android OS
However the phone was missing the EFS folder with IMEI info and such..
Still was not able to recover it 100%.
Message me with your email and I will try to send what I used.

To do it, get this file.
https://gofile.io/?c=tJd0Pd
Then get odin v1.85
https://gofile.io/?c=WHkZHO
Launch odin with admin powers (sudo/su for linux, or whatever).
Then click PDA and select the tar.md5 file and start.
Hopefully it soft bricked not hard bricked.

Hi,
Is there any place where I can get a ROM in tar format fot the GT-P7500 so I can flash it with Odin?
I have searched everywhere and all I can find are ZIP files or broken links to TAR files.
The ROM in my P7500 was bad and I can not make it to boot or being seen by my Pc other than using ODIN.
I'll appreciate any help!
Thanks in Advance

Thanks eushaun99,
I've had terrible experience trying to download a file from sammobile / terafile without a Premium account. More than 6 hours downloading just to realize the file was bad.
I read many posts talking about sammoible for stock ROMs. Available ROMs files for downloading are ZIP files, not TAR or MD5.
Before paying for a Premium Account... Do you know if ZIP file contains any TAR or MD5 file in it as those are the file type I need to flash my P7500 with ODIN?
Thanks!

You don't have to buy the premium account. Admittedly I haven't tried downloading from terafile yet, but I guess the download speed could be due to your internet connection maybe?
Once you've downloaded the zip file, extract it. The .tar.md5 file is inside.

Just to wrap it up in case it helps anybody else....
I wasn't able to download the ROM from sammobile / terafile, transfers ended up with timeouts or Network errors even with Premium Account. Anyway, I don't have such a problem with any other site.

I was having similar problems recently, w/ my tab, w/ sammobile, w/ terafile, w/broken links, etc. Very frustrating, I felt like I was running around in circles & getting no where. Then I saw a suggestion (I thought it was on this thread actually) to go to Chainfire's website & odin flash the appropriate files found there. I did & worked like a charm. Only problem is I can't seem to replicate that "Web journey" so that I could link you to it. Like I mentioned earlier I was "running around" the web like crazy trying to figure this out and simply can't remember my exact steps. But, I hope this information at least gets you headed in the right direction.

Hi, excuse me for the late response!
The ROM I used to flash my P7500 with adb is the CM ROM from the following post... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098429
I have followed all steps in that post but I had to install Android SDK in order to use adb instead of Odin. Flashing with adb was so fast that I thought I did something wrong, but after rebooting the installation began and completed successfully.
I wasn't able to download any sideload ROM from sammobile, sorry.
I downloaded Android SDK from here: https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
You don't need to completed all mentioned steps just to get adb, just install the platform tools.
Hope this help!
Best Regards,
Marcelo

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261598
if not, check the last post in this thread. you will find a link provided from "developweb", see if that is what you are looking for, be sure to hit his thanks button. I am not going to send one of my files, again simply, because you have not told anyone device or carrier. you have already flashed wrong file once and I don't know how, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone bricking their device.
you have been a member long enough to know what information folks need and long enough to know to read. if you can provide this information, then maybe I can help you further if needed.
good luck and keep us posted

Got you. Well there's a bunch of modems here but you will have to decide your own course. I can't offer any advice on them. Good luck!

I have wanted for some time to have more control over my device and thought I should learn to flash roms. So I bought an old second hand Galaxy S2 for cheap, knowing I was likely to break it while learning. I have learned a lot, but not enough to recover it now that I have soft bricked it. Here is a more detailed description of the situation:
I was not able to install a custom recovery (twrp), I followed several guides and no matter what I did it always booted to the stock recovery. I have used both Odin and Heimdal, but I prefer Heimdal. I broke the phone by using adb sideload, after which it entered a boot loop and recovery was no longer accessible. Using Heimdall I was able get recovery mode back by flashing a stock rom but the recovery mode now has less options and sideload is not there. The phone still does not boot. I tried a few other things but I could not improve on that so far.
One of the major problems I am having is finding the correct roms. Samsung charges money for stock roms that old. On this forum most of the links to older roms are dead. From what I can gather it seems that Lineage might not be the best option for such an old phone and I might be better off trying Cyanogen, but I can't find any reliable seeming links for that either.
If anyone can offer suggestions as to how I should proceed I would be very grateful. The goal is to learn how to recover a phone and how to load custom roms, having a working phone at the end would be a good sign of success but is not the priority.

Thanks for the rom site, I hadn't found that one and it appears to have a lot of useful stuff.
When I try to flash it just sits on "File Analysis" for ages. I let it sit for like an hour to be sure but nothing is happening. This was one of the reasons I preferred Heimdal to Odin, there is no feedback. Is there a way to make it more verbose so I can see what it is doing?
edit: I tried to extract the contents of the archive to try it in heimdall but the extractor said there was an error in the file. That is the only s2 rom they have so I guess I need new rom link

Maybe file you downloaded is currupt.
If Odin fails try older version of Odin or newer one.
If still problem then use miraclebox.
