Hi everyone,
So basically tomorrow is my birthday and my parents would be getting me something. I was thinking of a new gadget.
I currently have the Google Nexus S
So for mobile device I've got the Galaxy Nexus in mind, or the HTC one X.
But lately I've been thinking about tablets. I do not mind getting a tablet to pair with my Nexus S. I was thinking about the kindle fire, but I do not know how to get it in Singapore. Or the Asus Transformer, but im unsure of it because of the price.
So can you recommend me a tablet that lies with the price range below 350-400USD or $500 SGD. ?
So what do you think? And or is the galaxy nexus upgrade a better choice? Please help in advising me. I'm in a dilemma.
Thank you so much!!

If I were in you I would only think about the Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100) or the Samsung Galaxy Note.
The S2 is very well supported by a wide community of modders, has got a marvelous screen, and great hardware.
The Note is bigger but still smaller than a tablet, and gives you the possibility to use a very sensitive stylus.
Have a look at the size, and have your choice. If my S2 breaks I will buy a Note.
HTC One X has a Tegra 3 chip, currently the most powerful SoC solution. So I would suggest going for it - it wil be powerful even after 2 years.
S2 or Samsung Galaxy Nexus
I got the S2 but i would rather want the Samsung Galaxy Nexus cuz it's more "Google" if you know what I mean.. cuz i hate the touchwiz, I know you can get a ROM but still.. AND the nexus got the Navigation Bar!
If I were in your place I would have gone for tablet, having two gadgets of different leagues is better than upgrading one.
Thanks guys, I would take all your advice into account. I am hoping for more replies because all your replies are opposite one another

Ok I'll add some more to your confusion!
Getting a new device is like getting a new pair of shoes. You should get the one that fits you comfortably. Here's a short list of what I'd get if I were to buy a phone (depending on need/want):
*available phones only
-Xperia S: Camera monster and cheaper than the OneX, at Par with SGS2's performance
-OneX: future proof (probably good for the next 2-3 years), powerful GPU
-Samsung Galaxy Nexus: timely updates (that's it)
-Samsung Galaxy S2: wide dev support, probably still good for the next year or so (but the resolution is too low IMO)
-OneS: beats the OneX in some benchmarks (in their native resolutions), IMO S4 chip is better than the 4-PLUS-1 A9 tegra 3, more affordable too.
IF you're going for a TAB and you can't afford a Transformer Prime don't settle for the Nook or a Fire. I suggest you get a Motorolla XOOM. It's tegra 2 powered and has an HD screen (1280x800) compared to the 1024x600 of the Nook and Fire, and it has a very wide dev support.
I suggest you go for a TAB and don't upgrade your phone. That way you'll have your Nexus S (which can still run almost every app on the Play Store) and have the XOOM for your multimedia satisfaction
Happy Birthday bro! good luck on your gift!
We have a number of tablets here where I work, and the one that I like the most is defiantly the Asus transformer. But that being said I agree with the last guy the XOOM is a good one and also is most acers. But price aside I would say the Transformer Prime would be a fine choice!

Thanks dude!! I really sincerely appreciate it it must have taken you a lot of time to write that out. Thanks good news I've got a few more days to decide. And haha you've added to my confusion
I've ruled out tablets for now.. this is due to the reason that I wouldn't bring it outside of the home anywhere with me unless I'm going overseas on holiday. This is due to school and lack of time..
So now you've narrowed me down to 2 devices which I had my eyes on. The One X and the Galaxy Nexus. Looking at the One X's development section it Loos empty. That's probably due to cwm being recently released for it. So in the 5days room I've got (parents waiting for a $150 voucher, phone costs $400) I will check the development section of the One X.
Now I wonder, which roms do you think will come to the one X? Aokp? Cm9? These are some basic concerns I have.. looks like I might have to actually go with the One X. How about MIUI on the One X?
Something that bothers me is the One X has a very different look from the Nexus. Minimalistic stuff on the launcher would be pretty difficult to achieve.. so any screenshots of cool designs done on the One X?
Thank you all guys! I hope you had a good day.

It's kind of hard to recommend a phone better than the Galaxy Nexus in it's price range. However I have 2 options I'd consider:
Xperia S:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4219&idPhone2=4369
pros:
-Best Camera in the android world
-32GB storage
-Sony's reputation of giving updates even to older devices (X10 came out with Donut and came as far as Gingerbread)
-Better CPU (1.5GHZ snapdragon vs 1.2GHZ TI-OMAP)
-with card slot
cons:
-no gorilla glass (can be offset with screen protectors though)
neutral:
-SuperAMOLED vs LED-Backlit_LCD (matter of preference)
-4.3" vs 4.65" (matter of preference)
Samsung Galaxy S2
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4219&idPhone2=3621
pros:
-definitely more afordable
-with card slot
-better camera
-more powerful SoC (better processor and GPU)
-very wide dev support
cons:
-not retina display
neutral:
-4.2" vs 4.65" (matter of preference)
Both these devices are significantly more affordable than the Galaxy Nexus and both has the same, or even better, performance.
Personally, I can afford the OneX but I'll be getting the Xperia S. IMO (benchmarks aside) there is nothing the OneX can do that the Xperia S can't, at least for the next year or so. And in two years time I'll probably be changing phones again, so I'll go with the Xperia S for now.
Hope this helps
Hey guys I am up for a replacement on 8/20. I can't decide to get the s3 or the nexus
The s3 has so many features I love over the nexus.better battery life, bigger screen, more ram and a better processor.but the nexus has jellybean already.maybe some members who previously had a nexus can chime in and tell their personal opinion about the phones that would be awesome.thanks guys
Nexus or Sgs 3 and you thinkng??
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
If you are aware for all of these advanteages, than why are you even asking?
It seems like you already know the answer
bottom line WHY GET AN OLD PHONE???
S3 is newer.....cant wait for the Note 2. that will be my next new toy.
I have both the Nexus and S3.
I haven't got around to putting on Jellybean on the Nexus yet.
The S3 feels better in your hand and runs smoother, thanks to the better CPU. The bigger screen is certainly better and doesn't feel awkward either.
The notification light on the S3 is much brighter and more vivid than on the Nexus.
You will also notice how much lighter and thinner the S3 is to the Nexus.
The MicroSD port in the S3 is a nice addition too, something which the Nexus doesn't have.
TouchWiz isn't that bad either and it doesn't seem to slow down the S3.
The only bad thing about the S3 is that the back cover, once removed is actually a bit flimsy. But once its on the main unit, the S3 device as a whole seems to be good quality. Not metal, but not cheap plastic either.
All in all the S3 is a generation ahead of the Nexus, no question about it.
I'm not the biggest Samsung fan, however, if the S3 has all that over the Nexus, I'd certainly go for the Sammy. The Android OS will/can be changed/updated by rooting it. That would give you all the benefits of the better hardware combined w/better roms anyway. If HTC is out of the running, Moto has nothing to offer (american made) and Nexus is that dated then my vote is the S3.
That said, I can't wait to get rid of my kindle fire for the new nexus tablet, that thing is the ****
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda app-developers app
If your using an upgrade get the S3 and worst case trade for nexus + cash. If your buying outright consider value for price/performance ratio... ie: nexus ~$300 vs gs3 ~$600 is the gs3 worth almost double? Is it almost twice as good?
Don't get me wrong I love the gs3 lasts all day does it all, has a micro SD, no direct updates/vanilla experience yet AND its quite a bit more.. I could easily have a nexus + nexus 7 vs my 1 gs3....
Just something to consider

I am in the same boat, dude.
No microSD card on the Nexus is actually a deal breaker for me. Gorilla glass is a necessity - i hate scratch phones. Sound quality for me is a priority and SIII wins hands down.
Thoughts for SIII:
- SD card
- Wolfson DAC
- BT apt-x
- gorilla glass
- better camera
- quad core
Well, the advantages of Nexus:
- price (around £120 less in this country)
- it is google = no bloat, good support, speedy updates
I think the wise decision would be go for SIII when the price drops a little (after iPhoney 5 is introduced)
Thanks guys I am 99 percent going with the s3. I just didn't want to be in same boat so am in right now with this thunderbolt.because of ril issues the t-bolt is still stuck in gingerbread.don't get me wrong the t-bolt has amazing devs.but htc sucks with updating.the phone. I see there is a port for JB already for the s3 but I fear it will be a dead project like all the t-bolt ICS
Roms. This is definitely my last HTC product.

I hope I'm not misunderstanding you but you have NO reason to fear Jellybean becoming a dead project on the S3. Maybe that specific thread will die, but there absolutely will be Jellybean roms for the S3. Many I'm guessing. Just give it a month or two.

Yes that was my fear. the ICS roms on the t-bolt have been in limbo for months now. I am a flash-a-holic and i wanted to make sure this device would be cool. I would love to see a 100% working port of the release for the nexus on this phone. I am dying to check out the new google search feature. blow my i-freak freinds out of the water . they think siri is good wait till they see this.
Hi!
So I was thinking of getting this phone or the Galaxy nexus. I was wondering if I should still get the gs2 or wait a while for the galaxy nexus price to drop to the same numbers.
GS2 costs 350€ and nexus is 450€ so that makes the galaxy s2 more appealing. Also the nexus might have screen that's a little too big already, but the concern with gs2 is the resolution, were it qHd I would have already gotten it!
Anyway i wouldn't want to spent more than 375€ on the phone, 350€ would be best. And if you have ordered from ebay etc. I'd also like to now about that since could probably get them cheaper from there. Are the phones in ebay UK international versions that work here in Finland too?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: So everyone tell me why I should get galaxy s2 instead of galaxy nexus since you can probably best answer this question!

the waiting game in the mobile industry never ends.
I'll say buy galaxy SII now.
I'll pick galaxy SII over nexus any day but that's just me.
If you want me to justify my reasons, I will.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
Please do! As much info as possible will be appreciated!
*Galaxy SII (GT I9100) over Galaxy Nexus*
-Better camera performance, still imaging and video
-Better Raw processing power. Galaxy SII blew galaxy nexus or of water in every benchmark possible, after ICS upgrade
-Better graphic performance
-RGB screen vs Pentile
-Expandable storage. Galaxy nexus doesn't have SD card slot and 32g version is not common
-Better battery performance
-I love my home button
-Excellent developer support. This compensates for lack of on-time updates as compared to nexus e.g I'm presently running a very stable jellybean ROM on my galaxy SII just like galaxy nexus thanks to developers
-very compact size, thus easier to handle
-cheaper outside US
***Galaxy Nexus over Galaxy SII***
-720p HD screen resolution
-extremely fast updates/upgrades
-Larger screen (4.65 vs 4.3)
-cheaper in US

All right thanks a lot! The camera isn't that important for me so don't really consider that as a plus. I prefer 4.3 over the larger display though but the resolution is making me uncertain. Is it large enough? I have a htc wildfire now so any phone will be a huge improvement
And even though i trust Di Matteo's opinion, I'd still like to hear what other people think. If a Milan fan agrees with this I'm sold!
i just got my s2 had it for a week and its amazing just wish the screen didnt drain so much battery have to have it turned down if you want you phone to last a long time.
i also have the same rom that comes with the nexus on my s2 its awsome and fast

Get a Samsung 2000mah battery too, you will love it for sure
Hello Android forums,
I am looking for a tablet to replace my aging Prestigio tablet, and there are 2 options that I have narrowed it down to; they are the Nexus 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
I start Sixth Form in September and so the Note 10.1 would be useful for me to jot down quick notes and ideas, but is it worth paying £499 when the only benefit is the S-Pen. The price difference between the Note 10.1 and Nexus 10 is approximately £180 which means that I would buy a 16GB Nexus 7 with the money and take that to school with me. So is it worth paying £180 more for tainted Android but the S Pen or should I get a Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 with approximately £20 left over to purchase student stuff?
Many Thanks

If you're willing to spend that much money go for the Note, it's note-taking abilities are undefeated. It's so satisying to use.
Do not buy two devices, you'll regret it because it's overkill. I would suggest a Nexus 7 if you're going to take it with you to college. It's ultra portable and stock Android is faster and more fluid. There is quite the selection of note-taking apps, so check the Play Store for one that fits your needs and go for the Nexus 7. If not, go for the Note. They're both a good choice.

Hi Robin2,
Thanks for the reply!
That was my initial instinct, that note taking would be easier with the note because after using my friends Note 2 and S Pen, I loved it and loved how easy it is to use. My brother has a N7 and as far as I know, he loves it, but are you saying that there is no reason to get a Nexus 10? Because if I were to get an N10, I would not get a new laptop and just use a tablet for my web browsing needs and take the N7 to college with me.
Thanks

It's a great device really, but IMO it's just not worth getting both a Nexus 7 & 10. You will end up using one of them most of the time. The N7 is comfortable to use for a really long time, whereas the N10 gets quite heavy after using it for a while. So I can imagine you would want to pick up the N7 more often, because it's just so portable. But really, the screen and performance are great on the N10.. better than the N7. So if you're OK with having both, but not using one of them that often - go and get yourself a N7 and N10.

Ah, I thought there was some major technical oversight with the N10 that rendered it useless (apart from the screen that has such a high pixel density that it's almost impossible to hit a small button) I think that I would prefer Nexus devices because my last altercation with Android was ruined by 2 things - the lack of updates and the bloatware - not an issue with a nexus!
Yes software is often more important than hardware. I believe Android 5.0 is confirmed for the Note, but it could take a while for Samsung to actually release it.

But saying that, Jelly Bean 4.1 was confirmed for my Ace Plus, and we are still waiting. It was the lengthy wait and wondering if we were going to get updates teamed with the fact that we never did and also all of the bloatware that made me purchase a Nokia Lumia 800 because I knew I would prefer WP7.5 to Gingerbread instantly
I think I will go for the N7 and 10, and I am certain that when my contract expires in May, I will get whatever nexus phone is available, just to give droid another try and also to complete my nexus set
Thanks for your help, Robin2

Not with me, I would have my N7 in my bag and use that while I was at college and then have my N10 for when I am at home, that way, both devices get used!

First about me: I have been using a GT-P6200L Galaxy Tab 7+ GSM, HSPA+ as my primary device. Yes, I carry a 7" tablet with a built-in phone and have been doing it for over a year. People have looked at me like I have 2 heads. But I was clearly ahead of my time with large Phablets are concerned.
I just spent a while in my local AT&T store evaluating a few Samsung products. I was interested in the MEGA as it is still big but more manageable than my Tab.
Certainly the MEGA is a great size but it DOES lag. Even my P6200 upgraded to Jelly Bean, does not lag. It is not the quickest machine on the planet but it is smooth and quick.
I then examined both the Note II and III. The 3 is certainly nice, especially the screen. The Note II seems like the value proposition. But it is simply NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH. Sure, it is high resolution and Amoled but it is DIM vs. other machines. And after using a 7" Tab and contemplating the MEGA, the Note is simply too small.
AT&T has a very nice 7" Tab 3 but you cannot have a phone in it. I can buy an international version with a phone, but NO LTE.
I like the LG Optimus Pro, but I already bought one for my wife and it is also too small.
I guess I'll stick with my 7" Tab+ until they make a 6"+ LTE phablet. Hurry up already!

I also have been carrying a 7" phone around for nearly 2 years - original GTab P1000. I decided it was time to get something "up to date" - since I was never going to get a working Android 4.x on the GTab. After experiencing Samsung abandoning the P1000, & didn't want to get an "end of life" device, which counted the GTab 2 out for me. Going to a smaller screen concerned me - that eventually counted the Note 2 out. I decided to go for the Mega 6.3 ...
... I have absolutely no regrets. I have no lag on the device, its quick & smooth, & pretty much a perfect size. Screen is large enough to be usable, but the device is small enough to comfortably fit in a pocket, or on a belt clip. One of the best purchases I have made
Did you check to see if they offer the 7" Tab 3 in Australia? ?? If so... theres your LTE...But..does the Tab 3 have a flash for the camera??? I dont think it does.. I like my large screen phablets with flash....
I still rock the crap out of my GT p6800..
Non LTE.. but H+ speeds with ATT -US...gets 7-8 d/l mps on slow traffic...

Coming from an S2/Note 1/4g but no voice 7.0+ combo on T-Mobile, I wanted one device but kind of ran into similar problems. Neither the international voice Tab 3, Note 2, nor Mega gave me everything I really wanted- decent camera (out with the Tab), LTE (out with the Tab again!), decent price (no new Note 2 or Mega), a bigger screen than my Note 1 (still think the 2 feels smaller), and pentaband hspa (no Tab, Mega), and enough accessories (out with all but the Note 2). I considered a 6200 for easy sim swapping with my S2 (to keep a compact alternative) but didn't want to deal with the proprietary charger any more. Also, those tablets still cost a LOT!!!
I ended up compromising more than I wanted with a really clean, $325 T-Mobile Note 2. I like the phone, it seems to have fantastic battery life so far, and it's more pocketable than my original Note but I still want something bigger. I'll probably keep my 7.0+ as a home device or getting a voice enabled Tab 3 7" or 8" down the road to go with the new Note. Hell, I'm not even carrying THAT yet because I messed up putting my first screen protector ever on it.
The MEGA would be just fine with a faster processor, 1080p screen and Gorilla Glass. Is that too much to ask? I'll be sticking with my smooth as silk, nicely screened Tab 7+. But I'm looking for the next device...
