restoring it on other rom will bring back your previous rom with all the apps and settings.

Just one little note, it doesn't backup kernel.
So make sure you are on right kernel (GB or ICS) before you restore your backup.

Try with Titanium Backup....here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=it
PRESS TNX BUTTON IF I HELP YOU :good:
Yeah use Titanium Back Up as mentioned in the post above.
Once u open TB, on the top right of the screen u will see a tick within a box. Click on this. It will open Batch Backup/Restore options.
Click on Backup all user apps before flashing a new ROM.
once u have flashed a new rom, click on Restore missing apps with data.
Titanium backup
Ultimate Backup
App2Zip - You choose the apps you want and it puts them in a flashable zip on your SD card or internal storage. When you install your new ROM, just install the flashable zip and you have your apps back. Only thing is, it doesn't save the app data with it
AppExtractor - You can extract and install apps AND/OR app data from CWM recovery backups. You can also restore WiFi info, Bluetooth settings, contacts n I think a couple of other things.
All in the market.

[Q]backing up the rom with cwm

Hi
I want to install a costume Rom on my phone
but first I want to make a backup of my stock rom (just in case)
I found a backup option in the CWM app
so i need to know:
dose this option backs up only the Rom or will it back up the kernel also?
Are there better ways to backup the rom?
in general what does the "create a backup" option do? (in CWM in mean)
thanks in advance
best regards
backs up all but not the EFS and Modem

the backup option will backup every thing on you system and data partition but not the kernel and modem..
there is no better way than this..
correct me if I am wrong:
1-the backup options backs up my data (such as save data for games) too
2-if I want to restore to my stock firmware, this backup WON'T do it properly since it won't restore the kernel

It backups everything including kernel except modem and efs. So if you restore it back you will have your stock kernel there

As Bala said Kernel is backed up..so I may be wrong here..but I read somewhere that kernel is not backed up..so anyways..you will have the stock kernel if I am wrong..
the games data is stored on your internal sdcard..so it wont be backed up..and in between if require a factory reset it will be lost..
thanks guys
you helped me so much (and fast)
and one more thing i remembered right now:
the backup will be a CWM flashable zip file.right?

To restore you go to backup and restore and select restore(from internal or external sd card) depending on where the back up was created.

As far as I know, cwm backs up both user apps and system apps with their data so if u restore it from there, the old sytem apps and data might conflict with the new one...so I would advise against it.
Use cwm and completely restore ur old Rom, make a backup usng tb and then flash ur new Rom... Safest way!

I think that will make so much easier for me the fact of testing more ROMs on my cellphone, thanks you
You can simply backup your apps and data via TB and
After installing a new ROM just restore APP+DATA via TB... best way to sort and backup and restore apps individually

You could also use yaffey to extract anything from a CWM backup:

On some clockworkmod versions you can do an advanced restore and just choose data. Never tried it but maybe give it a shot

Not recommendable....if your phone is on different ROM before backup, restoring the backup data into different ROM will make your phone bootloop (really bad cases) or lost statusbar/setting and etc (light cases)....
since he already make a backup then TB is the best choices...

You Think????
FYI : Backup from CWM contains the whole pack of the previous ROM....when you choose to restore data only, it restore all data including User Apps Data and System Apps Data....when System Apps Data is restore into a different ROM, you bet it going to make your phone into bootloop....
you are welcome to try it if you don't believe me....

I was talking about the selective backup of nandroid backup from TB. Ofc in a CWM data restore all apps(system+user) get restored. Im well aware of that and I wont be trying that
Anyways i think this tool is the best option right now. So thanks iOneX for the info :good:
A bit late I guess..
Well, I come here six months later, but Google brought me here...
I guess you're already using Online Nandroid Backup combined with Nandroid Manager. Just two days ago I restored user apps+data with Nandroid Manager from a backup created through Online Nandroid Backup. Both apps from H3r3t1c are really useful, specially working together.
Aside of this advice (surely already not needed) I was looking after a script to restore those user apps+data from a backup. I wanna include that script in my list of zips-to-flash in ZipInstaller
I'd appreciate any help. Cheers.

Last questions before flashing

Good evening everybody.
I've recently rooted my phone and installed a costum recovery. Now i'd like to say good bye to the samsung stock ROM and install a costum one (Android Revolution HD probably). But after flashing i'd like to find my phone as it was before! More precisely, messages, contacts, settings, apps (with user settings) should still be there; i'd like to backup everything is on the phone and restore it after flashing. To do that can i use Titanium Backup? It can backup it all? Are there other ways to do that?
Moreover, if i get the Siyah kernel and install the CM10 too, massages and apps are shared between the 2 systems, or everyone has its own?
Thanks in advance!
You can back up user apps and messages with titanium, restoring them safely in your new rom. You can't do the same with system apps or settings - you'll just break the new rom.
Contacts are restored when you log into google.
....additionally,I suggest using a third party launcher like nova, you can back up your layout, and it does a brilliant job of restoring widgets too, also remember to make a nandroid of your working Rom so if the flash goes wrong you can restore, and don't forget to back up your efs
Ok, thank you very much! And what's about dualboot? Is there a way to share massages, contacts and apps between the 2 systems (for example, if i send a message and then i change ROM, i can find that sent massage in the just booted ROM too)??
EDIT: Thank you too slaphead20. I didn't see your post.. I'll absolutely make a nandroid and EFS backup! How can i do the EFS backup? Simply from recovery? Can i use the GS3 Unified Toolkit?

You can, but it's complicated,I don't think siyah works with 4.2.x, I would stay away from dual booting until you are a bit more experienced.....I personally don't bother with it anymore, too much of a headache!

Flash apps from twrp by making zip of them (to avoid reinstalling apps again and agai

I use to flash new Roms every time. But then everytime I have to install the basic apps again from playstore .
To avoid this reinstalling , I made titanium backup of apps and I restore apps on different Roms from titanium backup app. But here problem is I have to root the rom to use titanium backup on every rom.
I just want to ask , how can I make a flashable zip of some important apps so that with new rom flashing I can flash this all zip too....so that apps get installed without root.
And as flashing from twrp install gapps in system partition ...so can i install apps in data partition from twrp recovery ?
Use nandroid Backup

Look carefully there is an option for making flashable zips for backup in Titanium backup itself so just find it and use it but i would suggest to try and check it first because it doesn't always work so try it first before fully relying on it.

Yes I tried it too and it is not working for me. There is option of making update.zip from titanium backup. But when I flash thi zip from twrp, nothing happens. No app gets installed .

There is an app in playstore app2zip or something developer @jrummy
please try that too and report back .
First make backup of all apps in titanium with data. Then just tap on "tickmark" button on top-right corner. Here find "Recovery Mode" and Run recovery mode with desire apps with data. Name it whatever you like.
Now Go to twrp and flash that "Recovery.zip" file that you created in flashing zip. Restart phone after 1-2 times to make it stable. (you will probably can get app crash frequently by flashing zip"
But I think in this method too you need installed titanium backup for "app-data" installation. (All apps will installed without titanium backup but you need TB for data installation)

I think miui has better options for local backup which u will not find in custom roms. I hope our devs should have included this in custom roms.
If i remember There are 2 options in miui
1-User settings
2-Apps and data
If u moving from one from custom rom to another then its always better to backup and restore only "apps and data".. Never restore" User settings". Coz restoring user settings brings bugs and crashes. Coz different custom roms got diffrent tree.
Make sure if u backup using titanium then never backup user settings. Only backup apps and data.
