I have an OTG cable and i installed stickmount pro and i can view my music, etc, etc via my Nexus 7,but even though when I use the OTG cable via my Galaxy S3 I get a notification from stickmount saying mass storage device mounted but i cannot view any music, etc that i have on the 500GB external HD which ironically enough is made by Samsung, can someone be of assistance here, how can I view my files via my Galaxy S3?

Before I sold my laptop last week I formatted it via the simple format tool in Windows then copied all my files onto it, i thought I already checked via root explorer but couldn't see any files but i will check again and come back to you

Is the HDD spinning? HDDs require a fairly large amount of Power, I doubt that the SG3 is able to deliver sufficently.
It's a portable external HD and when it appears to recognise when mounted but i cannot view my files, it's only 500GB and i recall many on here saying that had a 1TB HD and it worked fine, so there has to be a way around this, it's turning into a long winded time consuming process trying to upload music onto my phone, I first have to upload to Dropbox which takes much longer and using loads of data then export from Dropbox to my Galaxy S3 :-\

Just to confirm I still cannot see any files when in root explorer when the external HD is connected but on my Nexus I can, sh*t I'm kinda regretting selling my laptop now if it's gonna mean this unless I can get a resolution

How is the drive formatted? NTFS? FAT32?
Hey there,
if the hdd has 500gb and you used windows to format it and you don't know the file system, usually it is NTFS. for this you need to root your phone and install an app from the market. usually paragon exfat ntfs does the job.

Hı guys and girls. I have been having a problem lately. A few days ago All my whatsapp images disappeared or maybe even deleted then today all my screenshots are gone. I'm a first time Android user and have no clue what's going on.
No one has used my phone and I am 100% sure I haven't accidently deleted anything.
Has this happened to anyone?
If you have no backup you can try to recover using a tool like RECUVA .

This happened to me too on my LG Optimus 2x with CM7.
All gallery images were gone except a few when I opened my gallery from the camera.
Anyways, managed to restore the images on the computer using some image undeleter or whatever. Haven't found any solution yet.
I'm waiting for a stable CM9 or CM10 release to flash my phone. Time to clean up.

Thanks for the replies. What are some good recovery apps? I searched for recuva in the play store but nothing came up. I also tried undelete app and that only does external sd cards.

Hmmm don't know about you but when I connect any of my devices to the computer with media device/usb storage option i get the internal storage mounted too. Maybe you should take a look at your settings.

When I connect my phone to pc via usb it shows my internal end external storage though I don't get your point. Is it meant to show both internal and external?

I am aware that the devices cannot be mounted as storage devices on computers, but I am curious as to whether or not it is or will be possible to repartition them and make them mount? Adding media and such and managing files is a pain this way, even if it is supposidly faster.
It's nothing to do with the way the device is partitioned. Google switched to MTP with Jelly Bean. The original HOX was a mass storage device. But that was switched to MTP with the JB update too.

So that won't change again? I guess HTC manager is really the best solution now?

Windows should be able to handle MTP devices very much like it handles external storage. The device should show up as a Portable Media Player in your file browser which you can then browse just like any other storage.

format to fat32 or use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter&hl=en
Are you using a USB-On-The-Go connection? Mine works fine with any formats. The OTG connectors cost about $4 and work well. Pretty sure there's a chip inside because the phone sees the connection even when there is nothing attached to the OTG.

I use FolderMount. Note that part of the app still reside in internal memory but it allow the big game data etc to be stored to external sd.
Work great for me on my root SGP321 4.2.2. My newspaper data and games with large data now reside in the 64GB external sd.
You might want to check out whether this app work for you.
Ok tried it moved data for one game over tried the game it tries to download the data or it can't download not sure what the issue is

The card needs to be fat32 and after you copy the data you need to go into the app and mount the folder, if you don't it won't find the data and it will try to download it again. /// this is due to the way sony has implemented the exfat drivers, something funny the way they did it, maybe some dev can explain it better.

You might need to use a powered USB hub or a cable with an Y-splitter to provide external power to the hdd.
I can't speak for the Z3TC but my htc one m8 can read my usb ssd without external power but cannot power my usb hdd - it spins up then clicks off again straight away

Can you also write to the external HDD? I got a nexus 9 today but it's going back because of light bleed and volume button problems.
It's a toss-up between that and the Z3TC so I may swap it.
Yeah you can write on it., make sure your hard drive is in fat32 or exfat because ntfs is not supported. Also make sure to use file commander if you're not rooted as this will give you full access

Has someone tried to use USB OTG with CM12?
Doesn't seem to work for me at all (dmesg showing no USB related output) except the USB port is unusable (no charging, no connection to PC) after plugging in an OTG cable until i reboot the device.

Maby it is because u use usb OTG apps that aren't desigend for CM12 Scorpion Windy Kernel,
Got the same question, Is there already an app for this?
Im trying to edit kernel myself, and make USB OTG work, Maby there is already something like this for CM12 Scorpion Windy?
If dmesg doesn't show anything, I doubt any app would help

Hey guys,
To confirm, I bought the OTG Y cable and that's how I made it work. I'm using the Nexus import program works great, but you can only transfer to the internal drive not to the SD. To get your files to the SD use the file commander app that comes with the tablet.
Also, the trick to use the OTG Y cable, you connect the HDD and the power to the OTG Y cable, and then plug it to the tablet, if not it doesn't boot up correctly or tablet won't read it.
