format to fat32 or use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter&hl=en
Are you using a USB-On-The-Go connection? Mine works fine with any formats. The OTG connectors cost about $4 and work well. Pretty sure there's a chip inside because the phone sees the connection even when there is nothing attached to the OTG.

USB port in car is for USB Flash drives only.....

I dont think it is only for flash drive because i remember,my brother using his htc explorer to listen music using usb my guess is that the car does not support large storages,
Try moving your music to the external sdcard if this does not help buy an aux cable they are pretty cheap on ebay

Previous versions of Android had option to connect as Mass Storage. We don't have this option anymore so he can't use it as USB MP3 storage. Another issue can be multiple sc cards connected at once but not sure about that.

I was really saddened to read that, so I went and tried out for myself. Apparently you can get it working.
This is, indeed, the MTP (Microsoft's "Media Transfer Protocol) vs UMS (USB Mass Storage). If you manage to get your device exposed as UMS, the car will read it. As far as i know, only the external SD card can currently be exposed as UMS on S3 (read this thread). It may be (theoretically) possible to emulate a UMS, but this sounds like hell of a task to me, i would be surprised if such a thing would exist. If it does, though - do point me to the right direction, i'll glad to read about it.
PS: Do consider simply using a flash drive. Using a UMS mode on the phone, even when available, is pretty much using your phone instead of that flash drive anyway.

Actually when I connect my IPhone I can play and control music via usb cable but not with my android phones
Have you tried an app to enable the phone as a usb mass storage device?.
Beamed in by telepathy.
why does it take so long to copy directly from PC to GS3 via USB cable?
(vs. using a card reader)
I tried several different 16GB and 64GB cards.(Kingston, Sandisk, Samsung OEM)
It always take longer whey copying from PC to GS3. When using a card reader,
it's always a lot faster....
Im no expert but i think its down to the MTP connection system used in the gs3 rather than USB mass storage.
Try to use dedicated "USB mass storage" mode instead of mtp.

Are you running XP or Win7? I had the same problem with my notebook at the office that has Win XP installed. I installed the latest Samsung drivers (can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956/) and that solved it for me. Hope it helps.

Theres a workaround somewhere I saw on xda which allows you to use your external sd-card as UMS instead of MTP

I'd like to try but I don't see such option on my S3. Is this available on stock ROM?
it's an app, check the themes and app section here

Before I sold my laptop last week I formatted it via the simple format tool in Windows then copied all my files onto it, i thought I already checked via root explorer but couldn't see any files but i will check again and come back to you

Is the HDD spinning? HDDs require a fairly large amount of Power, I doubt that the SG3 is able to deliver sufficently.
It's a portable external HD and when it appears to recognise when mounted but i cannot view my files, it's only 500GB and i recall many on here saying that had a 1TB HD and it worked fine, so there has to be a way around this, it's turning into a long winded time consuming process trying to upload music onto my phone, I first have to upload to Dropbox which takes much longer and using loads of data then export from Dropbox to my Galaxy S3 :-\

Just to confirm I still cannot see any files when in root explorer when the external HD is connected but on my Nexus I can, sh*t I'm kinda regretting selling my laptop now if it's gonna mean this unless I can get a resolution

How is the drive formatted? NTFS? FAT32?
Hey there,
if the hdd has 500gb and you used windows to format it and you don't know the file system, usually it is NTFS. for this you need to root your phone and install an app from the market. usually paragon exfat ntfs does the job.
i put my sd card (32 GB) to the card reader and formatted it to exfat system
when i try to transfer large files (5 GB and above) when the card is still in the card reader it works just fine but when i try to do it from the SGS 3 device it tells me that the file is too big

I think he means when connecting the S3 to the computer with the SD card inside of the phone.
I'm just throwing out my thoughts... you could try disabling the default transfer method of the S3, which is MTP. When connected there's an option to disable MTP. Maybe that could work...

Click "connected to PC" in states bar when you connected to PC, but I don't think it's gonna work as default is MTP, and other one is only for photo, pictures, video, don't know if it can transfer other files

You might need to use a powered USB hub or a cable with an Y-splitter to provide external power to the hdd.
I can't speak for the Z3TC but my htc one m8 can read my usb ssd without external power but cannot power my usb hdd - it spins up then clicks off again straight away

Can you also write to the external HDD? I got a nexus 9 today but it's going back because of light bleed and volume button problems.
It's a toss-up between that and the Z3TC so I may swap it.
Yeah you can write on it., make sure your hard drive is in fat32 or exfat because ntfs is not supported. Also make sure to use file commander if you're not rooted as this will give you full access

Has someone tried to use USB OTG with CM12?
Doesn't seem to work for me at all (dmesg showing no USB related output) except the USB port is unusable (no charging, no connection to PC) after plugging in an OTG cable until i reboot the device.

Maby it is because u use usb OTG apps that aren't desigend for CM12 Scorpion Windy Kernel,
Got the same question, Is there already an app for this?
Im trying to edit kernel myself, and make USB OTG work, Maby there is already something like this for CM12 Scorpion Windy?
If dmesg doesn't show anything, I doubt any app would help

Hey guys,
To confirm, I bought the OTG Y cable and that's how I made it work. I'm using the Nexus import program works great, but you can only transfer to the internal drive not to the SD. To get your files to the SD use the file commander app that comes with the tablet.
Also, the trick to use the OTG Y cable, you connect the HDD and the power to the OTG Y cable, and then plug it to the tablet, if not it doesn't boot up correctly or tablet won't read it.
