[Q] Upgrading from 2.3.5 to JellyBean (Odin wont detect sgs2) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys (and Girls),
Ok so rooted my SGS2 and installed custom kernel and rom about 9 months ago, and sort of forget about it after that.
I am wanting to upgrade to one of the Jelly Bean roms (still looking at kernels). I however wasn't sure what the correct approach to this would be as I came across some threads about rooting the phone for the newer android versions, so this probably sounds like a stupid question but i was wondering if i need to re do the root following the new guides or if i can just install a new kernel and rom.
Just a little bit of extra info, i will be starting from scratch with the phone (ie wiping all data from it) as i want a fresh install of jelly bean. Basically factory reset, but from what i remembered of doing my first rom that doesnt remove the root.
Specs:
Android 2.3.5
Baseband I19200XXKI4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I19100XWKJ2
Build CheckROM Revolution HD 3.1.1
Form memory i used chainfires root guide the first time around.
Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Trying to get ODIN to detect my sgs2 but not having any luck.

Here is the Jellybean firmware and after flashing it you will loose root access but dont worry u can root it again

This is the link for rooting this jellybean firmware

Thanks Ankur,
Any difference between that and using one of the jelly bean roms in the sgs2 section? because i am keen on using one of the custom roms, or is it best to do this firmware upgrade before a custom rom?
Cheers

I prefer u the stock one because I m also using the stock one with rooted and I get quadrant score of 5069
And 50gb space free on dropbox

Lol, fair enough, i will give the stock a run through and see how it goes.
Thanks.
Edit: Did a factory reset, put the phone into download mode and odin doesnt seem to want to pick it up. Tried turning on kies in the settings as recommended but it just says the app was forced to close.

Odin and Kies don't like each other, have and search and read about how to get odin working. There's literally one of these threads everyday here

Try uninstalling the Kies software but keeping the Samsung drivers. If Kies keeps trying to keep the phones output to itself Odin won't recognise it.

If you know how to flash a kernal, then just do it again with stock kernal. Or do a full wipe and factory reset in cwm or factory reset in settings/privacy that way it will be as out of the box and you will still have Pershoot's kernal.
Or
Forget all that and flash a custom rom like Task's, then you get the update, kernal, root and everything else improved and still get the out of the box experience with a whole new rom
---------- Post added at 02:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------
Just noticed you said 3g . All I said is still right except Task's rom is for wifi only.
Follow the instructions in "Re-“Stocking” Yer System…" section of http://p7510.teamovercome.net/?page_id=18 to get stock ROM.
After this flash the stock recovery using ODIN.
Then factory reset in stock recovery.(note: this will erase your SD card data too)
I followed a guide recently, but it took me to honeycomb.... Like the google io devices. Pissed me off.
Task.. just makes for WIFI... and overcome tab gave tooooo many FC when I flashed it. Did not enjoy it at all.
Im currently running stock 3.2 and pershoot kernel at 1.4ghz.
Screen rotation is extremly laggy... and many other things are laggy also.

Rooting the YP-GB70 & RaNI&RICE Tar.

Has anyone successfully rooted the YP-GB70 Korean 5.0 player on the latest 2.3.6 update? If so how? I also came across a RaNI&RICE Rooting ROM Tar. file that is KPH Firmware supposedly rooted? Anyone try this yet?
Hi, Im a Rice Rooting rom Developer.
Hey, This is only YP-GB70... If Flash Odin YP-g70, may be a device is bricked...

I tried rooting my YP-GB70NW with KPG FW ,in december last year, without success! many trials, I would say too many trials because I am stuck at the "GALAXY SKy" start up logo. Same result with KPH fw, that's why i am waiting for testing any new possibilty and 'Rani&rice' could be a saver.
Where did you get it at download?
Thanks

This is link.
Enjoy! This blog is YP-GB70 KPH Rooting Rom, Kph Theme Rom, No KPG Rooting Rom. because KPG Rooted Zergrush v4. and KPD firmware rooted zergrush v3. so, fota upgrade your YP-GB70.
Thx.
VERY good Work
Many thanks for your help!
I have tested the latest Rani&rice Wine release, on my device it works with the rooted kernel and refuse to 100% start with KPH kernel. Don't know why? Any idéa about the difference between them? Seems to be a difference in memory management because It report my memory size is Zéro and it is a fact because none of them internal sd or external are reconized!!! too bad.
Anyway I am able to connect internet and to play with this new configuration.
Good point It is very light and very fast. touch response is immediat no screen lag, Perfect!!! Only application that are basically needed at start, again perfect. Very good job.
If somebody have some idea about memory issue he will be welcome.
Well my PC does not even see the device when I try to flash via Odin ive reinstalled the drivers changed cables and Ports any ideas why?

What is your device status?
Blank screen? Download yellow triangle available or not?
A good way to check any driver problem is to get a friend with another droid phone, i checked and reintalled the drivers through Kies with a GALAXY Y available here.
If 100% lost only way is to make use of Adamoutler resurrector sw to get back to download mode. I appreciated it even I am poorly skilled at Linux....
good luck man

[Q] How to undo ICS firmware update?

Hello,
I updated my SGS2 to the 4.0.3 firmware from my previous 2.3.6 Gingerbread. After the update my phone lags a lot and the ICS keyboard for texting lags and just sucks.
How can I flash my ROM or whatever it is back to Gingerbread? I don't like this ICS and would rather run GB on my phone. It looked "nicer" in my opinion and ran much much smoother.

You can not undo the the update, per se. You can flash back to stock 2.3.4. If you want to do that, follow the guide linked in my signature to prepare the phone to return to the store.
There is no stock 2.3.6 available.
You can also flash stock plus root 2.3.4 or 2.3.6. For this, you can follow the guide linked in my signature about installing custom firmware without incrementing the flash counter. You would have to get the 2.3.6 firmware from the Download Repository.
In any event, since you will be changing firmware base, you will have to perform a wipe data/factory reset. The instructions are in the guide. You will lose all installed programs, personal settings, contacts, text messages, etc, unless you back them up.
Lol here comes the flood! Get the life boats ready! The "how do I undo this **** stock carrier updates suck wtf " revolution is here!

Once a person commits to dumping the stock 4.0.3 back to 2.3.4, it's a matter of time and reading before they will flash a custom rom.
ICS has too many added features to give it up. If you know that you can go back to 2.3.4 without issue, why not flash a custom ROM.
I believe you can call AT&T CSR and ask for help.
Should AT&T have provided the instruction for reversing back to GB?

Well, this is not entirely accurate. If you flash the stock 2.3.4, you can still do the OTA (over the air) 2.3.6 update from the phone (Settings -> Software Update, IIRC.) We just don't have it dumped and ready to flash from PC. Be aware that this will be a huge hit to your data, so you should use WIFI if possible (it's free at most McDonald's.)

If I flash back to stock 2.3.4 (without root), will I be able to use the OTA updates to get back to 2.3.6? Or will there be a problem since I used Odin to get back to 2.3.4?
Thanks.
Edit: Sorry, didn't see post immediately above me.

Yeah, I thought about that. I don't know if I want to get in that cycle of addiction
Any you recommend? I tried various ROMs with my Galaxy S, and it seemed like there were a few that had deal-breaker issues, like sleep of death and freezing, but it could have been the phone too. It was just hard to know which one to use.

CyanogenMod 9 (ICS) stable was just released. I've been running the nightly builds for three months or so and am quite happy. None of the crap Samsung Touchwiz bits...

DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER OR ANYTHING FROM GALAXY2ROOT_DOT_COM. MAKE SURE YOUR DEVICE IS AN SGH-I777.
Sorry about the all caps or if that sounds pedantic but I'm starting to think that should be in the signature of all posts on this forum.

+1 this is exactly what happened to me. Upgraded to at&t's ics, hated it, and it made me decide to root to get rid of it. As i was doing research on how to root I found xda, and have never looked back. I am now officially addicted and feel like a papparazi: always looking for new stuff to "flash"

Best way to root?

Coming from HTC this Sammy stuff works a bit different so I need a bit of help.
I've been reading up on root and it seems like there are quite a few ways to root, but I'm unsure which one is the best. SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V5.0, CF-root and Odin Flash+Root Guide looks usable but since I want to be able to flash any ROM/Kernel/Radio I guess CF-Root is out of the question. I'm leaning towards the Toolking V5.0 since it offers vital backup functionality, but your thoughts will be highly appreciated.
Should I root before or after upgrading to official JB? I guess there will be a rooted official JB ROM shortly, so before seems the way to go?
Getting back to stock is vital for me since my S3 is a company phone. As I understand it I just need to run Triangle Away to reset the counter, and then flash an official ROM through KIES. That is, right?
Sorry for being such a noob here - your thought and advise will be highly appreciated!
Chainfire, you can't go wrong
Just did it on my shiny new S3 over the WE and it worked like a charm.

That"s right.
I also tested Triangle Away to reset my Counter - works perfect.
Only flashing an official ROM i didn't test.
Use The toolkit..1-backup your EFS folder(lmei nr,essential) and your original rom.2-easy guide how to do everything.then when u get comfortable using odin(mobile odin also).then u are set to recover your phone if bootloop occurs, not a big deal and easy restored
After triangle away, flash a stock rom with odin then u are set.flashing stock rom with odin doesn't increase flash counter.samfirmware.com got all stock rom
Happy flashing

[Q] Root but keep Stock?

Hi there,
I have a GT-I9300, and I would like:
- to root it
- BUT keep it stock
- with no sign of root (except for Superuser/SuperSU)
Also I want to know that:
- if it is stock rooted; and
- if Samsung releases a JB 4.2 or KLP update officially
- will I be able to update it by "unrooting" it or something?
Please reply soon

ive kept my rooted with stock and i strangely found my battery has improved! not saying this will happen if u root but it did for me! u wouldnt need to unroot to install custom rom but you do need to flash a recovwry i put clockworkmod on mine so im ready to go when i do my first rom flash (im a newbie to all this too

oh yeah in reply to your question ill let other experienced users awnser as im not entirely sure about updating on a rooted device but just wishing you all the best in whatever road you take with your droid once ive looked into how to do it all proper i hope to have 4.2.2 before i have to wait donkeys for official rekease

All i know unfortunately you won't able upgrade it.
you can use triangle away to reset your flash counter and make your phone status "normal" and you can flash latest firmware (4.2.2) via odin since its published or leaked
remember to hit the thanks button if i helped
You can root it and keep stock rom your phone will work fine, you won't get over the air updates but as long as you keep everything stock you will be able to update using kies without any problem.
If you change the modem, kernel or install a custom rom you will not be able to update with kies but you can still update by downloading the latest roms from sammobile and flash that using Odin from XDA
Check this thread from Chainfire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
I was at your situation few weeks ago
I was at CSC DBTELL, which had newest firmware XXELL4, which was any kind of security hole you'd imagine I rooted with Exynos Abuse app, I didnt need custom recovery, no ODIN flashing, no triangle, no problems. OTA also didn't refuse to check for the updates and system status was unmodified. Ofc it depends if exynos abuse works on your current kernel
