Is there any way to access adb during boot? I want to be able to clear the cache on my phone, because i recently restored to the stock software. But there's one problem, when i repaired my screen, i nicked the volume control ribbon cable, and i've lost my volume buttons. So using the home/power/volume up combo won't work for me.
Any suggestions/ideas?
I have a usb jig to get me into download mode, so i have the ability to use odin, is there an odin package that i can flash that will just clear the cache/and do a factory data reset?
Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I just need adb access at boot, or a flashable odin file that will only do a factory wipe
Change csc...if you change csc it will duo factory reset.

I thought he could boot the phone since his power button is working.
Anyway, I tried it on my phone. I shut it down and powered it on. As soon as the boot animation started the device was detected by the command
"adb devices"
Then I just used
"adb reboot recovery"
and it immediately rebooted (mid way through boot animation) into recovery.
I hope this clears things up.

Thanks for the reply, i've tried this But for some reason when i do the adb devices command it only says " a list of devices attatched" and no device id.
I'm in a boot loop right now, and my computer does recognize the connection to the phone, maybe the adb drivers aren't installed properly?

I tried that, still stuck in a boot loop Oh well I've ordered another ribbon cable and volume buttons for my phone.
I can't think of anything other than trying to flash stock ROM using Odin or better a pre-rooted ROM which hopefully will boot normally and also give you reboot into recovery in power menu...

I did try to flash back to stock, as well as partitioning the phone with odin, but it still seems to just bootloop. Any time i've flashed back to stock firmware i had go into recovery and do a factory wipe, and the phone booted right up. But when i replaced the screen in my phone, i tore the volume ribbon cable. So no easy way into recovery
If you change csc then flash and modem and pda like jb leaked

Partitioning? Maybe you screwed up something when you did that... besides after flashing stock you don't need to clear cache. It must boot properly because flashing stock ROM will clear your cache anyways...

Can I get into recovery mode without a working home button? My i9100 has a faulty home button, phone is stuck on a bootloop will not get pass the samsung logo screen. I can flash the phone in odin with a stock rom and finish with success but still get stuck on bootloop. I think if I can get into recovery to wipe data then the phone will boot all the way. Buy a usb jig off ebay. plug it in then turn your phone on and it will put it into download mode.

I can get into download mode by pressing and holding volume down + pressing and releasing power but still holding volume down when turning the phone on. But my question is, how do I get into recovery without home button?
Flash a matching Chainfire CF root kernel via Odin (phone in DL mode). This with install his Cwm app. Once rebooted, run app (give su permission), and choose to boot into either clockwork recovery, dl mode, or reboot.
Edit: But once in recovery, how do you plan to actually select anything when the home button doesn't work? ? ?

Oh dear without the home button it's hard to operate the phone. I think you can boot into recovery mode by using ADB, search on the forums or Google.
I would rather you have the home button replaced ot fixed.

Use can use QtADB to get into recovery - just tried, it works. But the option "flash zip" doesn't work, and of course,................
how do you plan to "select" anything if the home button doesn't work? ? ? Can't think of any way just yet.
---------- Post added at 03:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:49 PM ----------
If you have adb setup, and know how to use it;
1. Copy the Custom ROM.zip to your sdcard folder on the phone
2. Rename to "update.zip"
3. Run CMD and navigate to the sdk tool folder where adb.exe is
4. Run "adb reboot recovery" to enter recovery mode
5. Phone to boots into recovery screen
6. "apply: /sdcard/update.zip"
7. After finish, reboot into new ROM
Haven't tried it myself though on the SGS2 ..............
tried it, didn't work..
Lost my Home button after odin flash HELP
I am stuck a i9100 that has no home working home button after i botched my first odin flash. I can not seem to get the device to be recognized by ADB or ODIN now that its messed up. I can boot into the Android Recovery System e3, and i can move up and down in the menu, but the 'home' button i used to select options no longer works. I can not get it to boot out of that menu.
This is a Sprint branded i9100 from the United States... tho when i got it, it was already 'rooted' with Gingerbread-Eg30 however it did not state the firmware version. So after i used ODIN to ref lash it... it rebooted and killed my home key... Now i am not sure what to do. ADB is not finding the device listed and I can't seem to get it to take a rom. Any suggestions?
Prior to flashing this rom in odin i had a working home key which was used as part of the 3 button combo to ender flashing mode or to select an option in the stock recovery menu.
Any help would be great!

I am having the same problem. My I9100's home button doesn't work. I had cyanogenmod 10.1 and cwm recovery installed. Used the button saviour app to operate a virtual home button on screen. Updated to cyanogenmod 10.2. nightly yesterday. All seemed working. Today I found that some apps like Google Play and ROM Manager would crash on when started. So I thought I go back to cyanogenmod 10.1. Started the installation of 10.1 from the "about this phone" settings because ROM Manager crashed and I couldn't boot into recovery from the crashing ROM Manager.
So, I now flashed a stock firmware from samfirmware.com with ODIN (because I can get into download mode with the USB-Jig), but that stock rom stucks in a boot loop.
Any suggestions? I believe, I am stuck in boot loop because I couldn't wipe the phone before flashing. Is there any way to wipe it in download mode?
Or can you be more specific, how to flash a "full wipe rom" and post a link where I can download such a rom?
1. Don't use rom manager on i9100, sure way to screw things up /brick.
2. Get the hardware sorted before you muck around with software. As you have found out, it's easy to get into a situation where you need the hardware to function correctly.
3. Download JB leak (stock firmware) from samfirmware and flash it via Odin. It's a 3 part firmware, and will wipe as it flashes.

Plugging into your computer and typing "adb reboot recovery" should work. Also, I think there are apps on the market that can reboot the phone to recovery.
Do you have the CWM manager app? That also has an option to reboot to recovery.

I soft bricked an LG p506 about a month ago and while looking for a way to do the same thing I found the instructions, a quick google search should put you in the right direction
A sure thing is to boot to download mode with USB jig, then flash a completely new rom with Odin.
OP, I noticed you have a couple posts regarding being on AT&T's network. Are you sure you have an i9100, and not an AT&T variant, which is the SGH-I777? Or if you DO have an i9100, that you didn't flash a firmware meant for the SGH-I777? The most common reason I've seen for a non-functioning home button is flashing the wrong firmware.

There is no such thing as a "soft brick" , Your device is either bricked or it isnt. The term "brick" is used far too loosely nowadays.
In some custom roms you can have a "reboot to recovery" option in the power menu (when you press the home button for 2 seconds or so)
Or, you can download an android terminal emulator and type "reboot recovery" into it (after giving it superuser permissions by typing in "su").
yeah i have an i9100. The problem is i went swimming with it a couple weeks back, and the home button (and mic + earset) doesnt work anymore. I was running checkRom on it and was flashing a mod thru the kitchen app, and now when it boots it says phone has stopped working and won't let me get past that.
So i cant use any soft buttons to get into recovery. I cant use the three button method. and I've tried the adb reboot recovery, wont work.
I can get into download mode though, so is my only option is to flash a rom via odin and hope that fc gets fixed?

Did you try using a terminal emulator on the phone itself? Just "reboot recovery", not "adb reboot recovery". (Remember you have to give the app SU permissions first, if it doesn't request them on its own type in "su" and the do the "reboot recovery" command)
both cwm and rommanager have an option to do this from inside the app, just download one of the apps from market
Lol, it seems nobody want to understand that you cannot boot the phone and use an application from market....
I have the same problem... But I found that you can buy the three buttons, it's about 20€, but you need to open the phone. You found a lot of tutorial on the web to do this.
Hope this help

As your phone is rooted it is very easy to get to recovery. Load Google Play and go to the app store and download "Quick Boot" and install. Run Quick Boot and it will give you an option to reboot the phone to recovery.
Great for stock phones with root.

hi guys
My problem is, I don't know the pattern/pin on it and the home button does not work. The friend that has the phone somehow forgot them by not using the phone awhile... Is there any chance I can get into recovery in this situation? Thanks
Last night my wife's S2 battery died. When she plugged it in it comes up with the Samsung Galaxy SII splash screen, then black and then the splash screen again. We let it charge overnight and the charge looks fine. When I tried again this morning to turn the phone on I get the same results.
So I thought I'd be able to get into download mode and flash the stock ROM with Odin. I'm able to get into download mode, but now the problem is when I hook it to my PC via USB I'm getting an Unknown Device error. I've tried to reinstall the driver itself, un-installed/re-installed Kies and the drivers...still no luck. I've also went into device manager and uninstalled the unknown device, rebooted and as soon as I reconnect the phone I get the same message. I've even used a toothbrush to clean the micro USB port, just in case.
I'm sure if I can get this to connect properly via USB I should be able to get the phone back up and running.
Any ideas?
Try to reboot into Recovery and then Wipe data/factory reset and Reboot.
Or wipe cache first, then try to reboot. And if a no go, then wipe data, reboot.

Anyway, it looks like u r gonna need to get into Download Mode and Odin or Heimdall back to a Stock Firmware. Not sure why ur pc isn't recognizing ur phone though...Did u reboot ur pc after the uninstall of the drivers, then try and reinstall ? (<---see in ur OP that u did)... And connnect to a usb port in the back of the pc, not a hub. Try a different micro usb/usb cable.
And see this post about the "Deleting Cryption Meta Data'" .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27368753&postcount=7
Yeah, I've tried it all. Even a different PC.
The phone is still under warranty, and I think that's going to be the route I'm going to have to take. Just hoped to avoid it because it'll take 6 days or something to get a replacement from AT&T.

Can you tell us why?
For a running device with USB debugging enabled you could run adb reboot recovery to boot into recovery mode. However this is for a running device, not for a device that is powered off.
I don't either fully understand what you're meaning by this.
But as far as i know the only way to access CWM when power off is Power+Home+VolUp, but then ofcourse i'm not a pro at this...yet there could be another way to access Recovery while power off which i haven't found out about.
I don't understand also why you must access Recovery while power off, in your situation (with the home butten broken) it would be easier to get ROM Manager. It has an option to reboot into Recovery mode. Or if you rooted with CF-Kernel, it come with a CWM app that let's you choose if you want to reboot normally, reboot into download mode or reboot into Recovery mode.
and if i may ask, what do you mean by Odin mode? Is it download mode?

Thanks for your informations.
The reason is that I flash a rom in Odin mode, but after that I can't get powered on, it always remains in the starting animation.
I've been in this situation many times, for every time, a wipe data / factory reset in recovery mode will fix the problem. However the problem arises, for this time, my home button is broken.
And I've tried a lot of other roms from Odin mode, it still remains in the starting animation. So I really need a wipe in recovery mode badly.
The "item" may be the same with USB jig from your description.

boot into recovery/download mode
..so u have a bootloop & ur home-btn is broken..
am i right?
the jig would bring you to dowload mode
install via odin ur rom with repartition..
u will need a 3-parted rom
that should solve your problem..cause i think theres no way to come into the recovery mode if u have a bootloop

I've tried this with adb tool in andriod development SDK.
However during the booting animation, even if Windows Device Manager detect Android ADB Interface, "adb devices" shows no adb connections.
Maybe the only way for me is finding a rom with auto wipe after flashing it by ODIN.
The only way you can get this fixed is get your phone-home button fixed in a samsung repair center ma8..
There's no other way you can go to recovery mode without the home button use...you can use th usb jig only to go into download mode!. Hope this helps.

He is simply not able to boot the device so how do you expect him to go into recovery with a broken home button?
alright guys, so here's the story. just yesterday i bought a brand new lg v10, got it home and the first thing i did was root the device and used ADB to load TWRP following the instructions here on SDA to a T for the ROOT/RECOVERY setup. and it worked. all was fine and dandy, the first time i booted into TWRP via ADB after root i got in, flashed a debloated ROM + xposed and again, everything went fine.. loaded into the OS of the new ROM, went through setup, turned on USB debugging, clicked always allow this computer, installed xposed app yadayadayada. I then, using ADB again, loaded into TWRP. i created a backup there just in case something went wrong with the changes i was about to make and once the backup was complete i loaded back in to the OS. at this point i thought i had done everything right and was confident that if i made system changes that didn't work out i could just flash the phone with TWRP from the backup i made. right? WRONG! ...apparently... so anyways, i made my first change, which was to use a NONROOT app called texdroider or whatever to change my DPI (as i have done with a couple phones previously without much issue) but i didn't take into account that stupid second screen... making the DPI changes system wide, as i'm sure those of you that know this phone are aware, causes the systemUI to crash with an error.. making the OS unusable.. so i tried to load into TWRP by holding the volume down and power button.. but instead it just booted me to the factory recovery.. not TWRP... the phone is unusable within the OS, i can't get the phone to connect to adb to boot into twrp as i had previously, i can't seem to get the phone into download mode, and i can't boot to TWRP and the OS is junk at this point.. but it DOES say on the "LG" screen that the bootloader is unlocked so i'm really hoping i'm not completely out of luck.. but i am not sure what to do at this point. does anyone here know of anything i can try to get into a custom recovery at this point? if i could get into TWRP my SD card in the phone has a backup, the original image, not to mention i could pull the SD card and add anything i need via my pc and then boot back to twrp etc etc and i would have no issue fixing the phone... i really don't understand what i did wrong or why i can't boot to my custom recovery but i'm at a loss.. i'm just looking for a way to force the phone into a custom recovery... or restore the original factory image.. if you have any advice at all i would really appreciate it.
Thanks for reading
**UPDATE** this may or may not make things much easier... but I got download mode working!! so at least there's that, still no custom recovery and i'm currently looking for a KDZ or TOT file to flash via lg flash tool... hopefully that makes things easier..
When you say you got to the factory recovery, what was that, an Android on its side or something asking you to factory reset your device? If it was the factory reset screen, if you select yes and then yes, it will take you to TWRP if you have it installed. If you don't it will factory reset your device.

**UPDATE** this may or may not make things much easier... but I got download mode working!! so at least there's that, still no custom recovery and i'm currently looking for a KDZ or TOT file to flash via lg flash tool... hopefully that makes things easier..

To boot into recovery from power off, you hold volume down & power. When you see the LG logo release and press power while continuing to hold volume down. Then as said above, it come up as a factory reset, select yes each time, and it should boot into twrp, providing you installed it correctly.

it was a screen asking me to do a factory reset, i click yes, it asks to confirm, i click yes again and then it "successfully" factory resets my phone... it shows the android factory reset symbol that its resetting, then says that its "optimizing apps" and goes through that whole process.. but when it finally loads the "welcome" screen (so i know for a fact that some sort reset has taken place) i get the same "systemui has crashed" error and the OS is unusable and won't connect to my computer.. idk why i can't access TWRP.. i booted to it 3 times before this happened, though never by the hardware buttons on the phone.. everytime i booted to TWRP i had used ADB to boot to TWRP.. what makes me the most sad is that i have a nandroid backup on my SD card... but i can't flash it without recovery.. which i can't install on the phone without getting into the OS..
is there any way to install TWRP or even boot to a temporary TWRP so that i can do so? if i can flash my nandroid i'm saved.. if i can get into a custom recovery i'm saved.. if i can find a .kdz file to flash, i'm saved... if i can get my phone to be recognized by my computer/adb i'm saved.... there simply has to be a way to unbrick this phone...

well i seem to have somehow NOT installed TWRP correctly because it just proceeds to factory reset my phone.. which for some odd reason doesn't reset the DPI... leaving me stranded... is there any way to get ADB to see my device in its present state? my computer makes the device recognition noise when i enter download mode and i can see it in device manager but not my computer or ADB
I've had this phone just over 2 months but I'm not positive, is download mode the same as the bootloader on this device? If so, fastboot commands should work, and you can flash TWRP again, or do 'fastboot boot TWRP_filename' and it will boot TWRP temporarily.
Oh, and the factory reset just wipes your data, but otherwise doesn't restore your system to factory state. That's why your dpi change remained.

dude.. then what good is a factory reset?!? like seriously... and yeah, i tried that but i can't get adb to connect in download mode.. the device doesn't show up when I type "adb devices" like it did when i first rooted it. ... and i thought i followed the instructions exactly as it was laid out from this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/general/guide-how-to-root-lg-v10-easy-t3274699
i think somewhere in there i must have missed something and ended up only booting into twrp temporarily.. which is certainly possible since i never boot to twrp during that initial process from the hardware keys or soft keys.. always through adb.. the phone was already plugged in.. typing the command was a couple keys away..
is there anyway to get TWRP on to the phone now? or am i screwed :'(
Well, it is a factory restore for the average user, because the average person isn't modifying their system. But no, I'm sure you're not screwed. If you're in the bootloader you can't use adb, you're already past that step, so you can skip to the fastboot part. What happens when you type fastboot devices? If the phone shows up then you can either fastboot flash or boot TWRP..

from what screen should i be attempting this? hold volume up with phone off and plug in to computer to enter download mode? should i try it at the factory reset screen (volume down plus power)? those are the only two screens i seem to have access to.. in download mode my pc/adb just doesn't recognize the phone.. it doesn't show up as a proper device like it did before this whole thing and in that factory reset mode i get nothing.. the download mode seems like its built for LG and runs from different drivers because in device manager it shows up with an error code that it couldn't start the device (this was not the case when i was using adb to unlock the bootloader and then using the bootloader to boot to TWRP..) what am i missing?
and hey, thank you so very much for taking time out of your day to help me. I really do appreciate it.

No problem buddy, and sorry for the confusion. You want to be on the bootloader screen, so here is what you can do: turn the phone off(or remove the battery if you have to, and put it back in), plug the usb cable into the computer only(not phone), hold volume down on phone, plug the usb cable into the phone. That should get you into the bootloader, and then you should be able to fastboot flash or fastboot boot TWRP.
Waiting for a resolution to this thread!
I'm pulling for you from the cheering section. (otherwise known as afraid to do it myself section!)
I'm pretty sure others have come through this exact situation unharmed (I've pretty much read every thread here.) so it's only a matter of time before you get this figured out.
Here's hoping it's sooner than later.
Sorry I can't offer more besides encouragement!

@ngoblirsch Along with the information provided in these suggestions and what you have said, you need to reinstall your LG/fastboot drivers on your PC while in fastboot mode

I spent all damn day yesterday trying to figure out how to get to the bootloader on this phone.. everything i read online said to hold volume down PLUS power while plugging it in and it was NOT working lmao. dude, thank you so much. after i read that comment here it took me about 30 seconds to connect to adb and boot to TWRP. This thread can be listed as RESOLVED!

Well I appreciate the encouragement, it sure seems to have helped! Issue has been resolved. ended up that i just didn't know the hardware key combination to get to the bootloader/fastboot mode without being already connected to adb. nothing that i could find online said to hold volume down while plugging it in to a computer. as soon as i was able to do so i connected to adb and it was a breeze from there; I am now back with an OS AND a customer recovery properly installed on the device!! I will be hanging around these forums for as long as i have this phone so i'm sure i'll bump into you guys! absolutely love the community here on XDA, you guys are freaking awesome!!
