[Q] Phone is modified so no OTA update possible. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
So here is the situation. When my wife's phone was on 4.0.x I rooted it using Odin and CF-root. No problem, peace of cake and she could use market unlocker to change the market to show her the Japanese content instead of the Hong Kong content. She very happy. Then there came the Jelly Bean OTA update ... Update went well, but she lost root and i did not have rooted her phone again ...
Now there seems to be another OTA update but it refuses to install because the update software says the phone is "Modified" and then quits the update process.
So my guess is i need to download to complete 4.1.1 firmware package to update her phone using Odin and do a complete wipe of all data on the phone (excluding her MicroSD card), in the hope that will make her phone in a "original state" again. Am I right?
So i downloaded the firmware package called I9300ZSDLK4_I9300OZSDLK4_TGY.zip from the Sammobile website. But after extracting this zip file i see a file with the name "KIES_HOME_I9300ZSDLK4_I9300OZSDLK4_500022_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5"
Can i still use this file in Odin to overwrite the firmware on her phone? Or do I have to use some tricks with Kies to tell it to use this file to write to her phone? Please advice on the steps i need to follow to put her phone in a state it will accept OTA updates again.
Thank you

I think you can flash her phone using Odin, and the content in internal storage will not lost except the system files, unless you do a factory reset
And you can enter recovery to do a full wipe before flashing, to avoid some unknown issue
Did you download the zip file from hotfile? If not, would you please tell me the link? As a China mainland user, I can't download files in hotfile.com...
Thank you

Thanks for your reply, I indeed were send from the sammobile website to download the file from hotfile. I will put it on dropbox for a while.
btw i installed it by the use of Odin and it worked very well. The status is now "Normal again" and the OTA updater doesn't complain about any modification. Know that this I downloaded for the Hong Kong version of the I9300 Samsung Galaxy S3.

Thank you very much
I had install ZSDLK2 version, which has some issues, so I want to update to a new verison

[Q] Problems with Auto Update of Firmware

Hey guys
I have a problem...
My Galaxy S2 is currently running this firmware with Android 2.3.4:
GT-I9100_XEN_I9100CEKI2_I9100XENKH1_I9100XXKI1
CSC = XEN
I get told that there is an update waiting in OTA , so I let it download, reboots, starts to install, stops at 33%, reboots, tells me that it failed and that I need to try via KIES or contact Samsung.
But when I go into Kies... there is no button to let me update my firmware... it just tells me my current firmware version, nothing else like it usually would...
Not custom ROM, no root, battery 100%. Wifi/HSPA makes no difference.... any advice? My friend has the same phone with the same firmware and it works fine with him?
Suggestions?
As it is a Dutch firmware:
Do I need to be in The Netherlands for the update?
Need a Dutch SIM card?

Yes, I think that the CSC does not match your current region.
That's why KIES does not support your phone for a firmware update.
I recommend to download and flash the latest ROM from Intratech's thread (=> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278)
I am running the latest Frankenstein ROM XWLA4 from the third post.
You can combine it with any CSC and modem file you want.
Just put those files into the corresponding section of Odin and flash all at once to your phone.
Stick to Intratech's description (first post).
Alternatively you can use Check Fus Downloader (=> http://fus.nanzen.se/) to check what's the latest officially released firmware version for your phone in your region and download it directly from Samsung servers.
Good luck !
OTA never worked for me ...
Hi,
I have a similar problem.
In my case, whenever I select Settings > About Phone -> Software Update - Update, it says "Connecting to server ..." and then it says "Connection failed".
In the last several months I had this phone, the update never worked from within the phone, and I could only update via KIES. Now I am on 2.3.6 XWKL1
Is this a known bug in SII? I tried to search the forum, but could not find this.
Please help
Regards
Ha! Got it sorted, so simple....
1. Turn off phone
2. Take out SIM
3. Turn on phone
4. Try again
5. Success!

[Q] Galaxy Note Counter reset

I am having trouble resetting the flash counter on my AT&T Galaxy Note I717 phone. I have downloaded the counter reset.zip file I have found on the XDA website and I copied the .zip file on to the phone and rebooted in to the recovery mode and then selected the .zip file and it keep aborting. I keep getting a error
E:signature verification error
install aborted.
What am I doing wrong to get this to rest? Since I have had this phone I have updated it to the ICS rom that is on the XDA website and the converted back to the AT&T GB rom that is on this web site using the Odin program. Now when I hook my Galaxy Note to my pc and use the Kies software to sync my phone I see under Firmware info it says that "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies." Then is shows the firmware as PDA:LA1/PHONE:LC5/CSC:LA1 (ATT). Is this the correct firmware I should have with this phone? I am back to the GB Rom 2.3.6. I did not back up the factory rom before I did an upgrade to ICS.

Just checked my stock GB rooted w/CWM on Kies and it shows PDA:LA1 / Phone:LA1 / CSC:LA1 (ATT). Maybe you have the incorrect radio modem installed?

[REF] Start up guide for rooting, recovery, ROMs, de-brick, and tether updated 04/2
section. then I downloaded the AT&T kernal and GB rom that I found.

Not sure if the incorrect radio is your issue or not, maybe someone else can chime in. Check this thread for stock radio

Thanks that fixed the Kies issue not seeing the correct firmware. Now all I need to do is to figure out how to rest the flash download counter. It keeps failing when I copy the .zip file to the phone and go to the recovery and then I select the .zip file and then it fails. Not sure what I am doing wrong or if I need to have some other file to reset the counter.

I just for got to do it untill it was to late. I have already installed ICS rom I found on this XDA site when I knew I for got to back it up. Its just one of those thing I guess. I am also still kind of new to install ROM's and unlocking the phones. But I have it figured out now. My phone is back to normal. I am on GB 2.3.6 and I have the correct stock raido software and every thing. The only thing that I am running is the touch version of the Clockworknod. I was able to reset the flash counter and every thing. The only thing I have to question since I had to run the Clockworkmod to reset the flash counter is how do I get back to the orginial recovery rom with out raising the flash counter? I had to use the the ClockWorkMod to reset the flash counter is because I keept getting a siginature verification error when I put the reset flash counter on my phone and then booted in to recovery and then ran the .zip file and it kept on giving me an error. So all is well now. Now waiting for the ICS OTA to come out.

[Q] Unable to upgrade vis Kies after Rooted

I am on DXLE6 and rooted with CF-Root. I can't seems to upgrade to DXLF6. OTA didn't find any updates (While normal unrooted can). I tried then using KIES but after downloading firmware (phone shows download screen), it ended with error of phone not recognized.
There is no issue with the driver or connectivity as it can detect the S3, prompt software update in KIES, download the new firmware and switch phone to download mode but it stops there.
Does it mean rooted S3 can't upgrade after rooted?
I have no solution for your problem, but all i can say is that yes, you can upgrade using kies when rooted (did that a couple days ago, too lazy to set stuff up again).
Question: do you use the original cable that came with the phone? Can imagine that this may cause the issue!
I can also confirm that when rooted software update couldnt find OTA update
I would suggest you to simply download and flash the ROM you would get from kies using ODIN. Guides and download links etc can be found using search function on XDA.

You can flash a newer version of stock firmware with CWM manager or with Mobile Odin Pro and still keep root. You don`t need Kies to upgrade.

You don`t have to do a full wipe when upgrading, just wipe cache/dalvik cache.
With the download i can`t help you, download it from another pc from a friend/family and copy it to a sd card !
Unzip the downloaded .rar file once to a .tar file.
Perhaps this is known issue, something is corrupted about the USB. It just suddenly stops working 'USB Not recognised'. Tried rebooting both didn't work.
Fortunately, I did TiB full backup before. I reset the phone to factory setting and it is recognised again by KIES. I have since upgraded to LF6.
Anyone knows why the issue with USB corrupted somehow (must be software setting not hardware as reset did it).

Help after firmware installation

hello everyone
yesterday i had a boot loop at startup in which the samsung kept looping and restarting and phone didnt startup into the software so i tried clearing the cache and format factory setting from recovery mode but didnt work so at the end i had to use odin and use a file .tar that i had when i bought the phone which had to be android v4.0.4 that had prepared incase i needed it urgently
everything went up right with odin and the samsung galaxy s3 I9300 is working fine
howeever i went into software update and i downloaded a 380mb file from the buildin software update function in the phone after completing the download i had a message which is something like this "download has failed try downloading and installing from setting<about<softwareupdate(which i used this way) or try using samsung kies on your PC to update"
now guys i went to samsung kies, i have a good internet its not a bad one.. however the samsung kies app is taking so long i mean it was on 10% for about 50mins or 1h.. so i decided to stop it and now i came here to ask you!! is there a way i can do to update the software manually!!! through downloading like a 500mb or 800mb file and using mobile odin or rom toolbox or anything that can help me update however apps get updated and changed so i dont know which app is working or not and where to be headed so please give me advice on how i can update it!!
2nd question , incase it can't be updated unless using this 2 ways the buildin software update or samsung kies!! is there a way to disable the software update notification that keeps poping up and automatically downloading the new android version!!!!
the reason i want to do so is that i already flashed the v4.0.4 android which i already has on my pc and i wanted to use my phone urgently so i didnt have the time to download a newer version and flash it therefore i am currently using the phone and have already apps and info that dont want to be deleted when flashing it again so i want to update it only!
thanks
download the firmware from sammobile website and flash using odin
2nd question, just ignore it
so this flashing through odin!! will it only update it to the newer version that am installing or will it delete all the apps and contents i have currently after installing the older version??
