I have a very basic question. can we completely format devices like IPAD, sony tab etc. just the we for HDD and clean install OS.
In which case we could install the os as its done during manufacturing of a new device.
Not that I know of there doesnt seem to be an option for that yet

Yes!
The customer service can do it!
Open the device, wipe all data, and return to original system(3.2.1 or 4.0.3).
But it will spend some money.

What he's saying is that you can bring your tablet to the service center and have them make a clean install of the OS. I'm not sure if this is already available to the public but essentially that's the only option we have if you want to make a clean install
Gooottt ya sure would be nice if they made it available to the at home audience

the money is not the main thing, but if they would let you choose which version you need. for example on an ipad 2 I would like to go down to a lower firmware as I haven't saved the unique machine SHSH. I would love to downgrade and jailbreak it. similarly as sony has blocked the ra5 exploit same thing, if I could choose 4a1 I could root it. That's the reason of this tread.

They will never let you choose another but the region you are in.
At the first, you'd agree to wiping your all data(system and user, internal storage and USB storage).
Then, they'll open your tablet, format your storage, install an original system(maybe it is, but they'll never let you know).
If you want to get another region, they'd say "sorry, another is not available".
So, your back to 3.2.1 or 4.0.3, you can root it again.

Did you actually see them open the tablet?
If yes, tell us what happen next.
Did they spend much time inside the tablet?
Did they connect a power supply to the tablet or set the tablet in a cradle?
Did they install a SD memory card in the tablet?
Did they connect a USB cable to the tablet?
Details are valuable information.

I've never seen that!
As I said, "maybe it is, but they'll never let you know", you are not allowed to enter the maintenance room.
That's only a guess!
My friend updated to R1, as you well know, it always splash screen, so he went to the authorized service points, and spent some money to restore the system(3.2.1).
Last month, I deleted a system file from my rooted TS, so that it can not boot, stay in the yellow line(no rescue-backdoor). I went to service center, they gave me a free replacement motherboard(laughing). 3 days later, my system backed to 3.2.1, all data were cleared.
The official says, "when we use the System Recovery Disc to restore your system, please backup your data, we don't promise to restore that"(translated from Chinese, is not the original words). So, there must be a System Recovery Disc!
So, it just a guess.

Hey
Hello sachin, I have a similar problem. I would recommend you please do not install non-hcl market apps in the tablet. I am just back from the service center. Deposited the tablet today. The internal memory has a write problem & no matter how much i tried, the settings & the non-market apps i installed are not removing/changing. The tablet is good but i am responsible for screwing it up. Have patience & let the developers release a custom rom or mod for the U1.

It was the 4th day after the purchase. i installed everything i could in it through apk files. I once connected a 3g tata docomo stick in it & bamm!! It was blank! I read the manual & pressed the reset switch with a pin & it worked. The tab booted up & to my surprise no matter how much i tried i could not uninstall any of the applications, change any of the settings. As if it got write protected. Whenever i rebooted the tab it came back in the same state, read-only. The service center people are saying it maybe replaced. What do you think i should do? Does this have to do something with the root? I tried to install the 4 apk file google play setup (one by one install). I even connected it to the pc & formatted the inbuilt memory but it all came back astonishingly!

Hmm,
Have you tried to factory data reset?
Tried that a lot of times. no luck! Its a lemon now. Lets see if HCL replaces it. I know it could be my fault. Do you think installing the apps has done this? I think the 3g dongle has something to do with this? or maybe it was a defective piece. I am waiting for their call. Lets see what happens

Well i have 40+ apps downloaded but i have not faced this issue..
I have not tried dongle yet..
Hmm thats a sad situation.
Can you tell me what all you tried putting and removing since u bought this tab??
Like rooting. and apps and what kind of mods u tried does not matter they passed or failed.
Let me know .
Yes i was surprised it got screwed. things like these dont happen in androids. Anyways i am thinking it was a defective piece.
I installed the step by step four apk android market installer, another normal google play .apk file, all sorts of apps from apktops.com etc. It was working fine. It just got hanged once when i plugged in the stick & after resetting it from that position everything went wrong after that. as if the tab went into read-only mode. I could not change the settings or remove/install any apps. After every reboot it went back into that state. I think it has something to do with encrypt. Check you tab settings & tell me what do you think about encrypt??
The service center people are yet to call me. I hope they replace it.
Once it also gave me an error like "key chain not responding" or something. After that is got screwed.

It seems like that you encrypted your tab first and then during reset it might have changed the file settings to read only mode.
Dont worry its a software issue, they will fix it.
May be its a glitch with their software only. May be they have not done the proper testing before releasing the tab out in the market.
What i would suggest dont think its ur mistake tell them its their mistake.
Dont tell them you downloaded apps from different source.
Hopefully everything should be fine.
Can you tell me
1)Were you able to use google play market properly?
2)Did u face this issue that if you run some apps the screen goes upside down. I mean to say we have ME written at the top and when i run some apps the screen needs to be rotated 180 degrees to make it run properly.
I dont think the service center people have enough knowledge about the new tablet. I had a talk with their technician & he said it might be replaced. I was expecting it as its a new launch & its ICS. actually i saved a few apk files on the internal memory & as you know no matter how much i tired i cannot delete them. So that is worrying me as they will find out & confront me for the same.
Google play did worked but whenever i tried to install any app from it, it crashed & then didnt run again (until reinstall) & i got the error message "stopped unexpectedly" or something. I guess it needed root access because the tab was not permitting any non-hcl market apps to run on it.
And for your 2nd question, maybe that did happen but i didnt realize it because i used the tab just for 3 days & its hard to recall what i did.

Thanks! It means google play never worked. Actually in order to make it work it needs to be installed using the rom installation and some files needs to be changed as well to make it work.
As far as hcl support is concerned , all i can say they are horrible , i spoke to a tech support guy and he said i can install any app using google he wanted to say if the app is not there in the market i can download it from google with the extension apk and i can use it . he also confirmed it would not void the warranty .
I asked him for pc software and guess what he said. Sir you find the software on google. Then i told him to share the link then he gave some sendspace link which was not working. As i am working and i dont have access to the tablet right now. They were insisting on the serial number of the tablet which i was not carrying while i was calling them up.
Dont worry about your tab , it willl be fine.
I am looking for someone who can help me in rooting this device. it seems like this tab is not rooted yet. I have an app root check it says device is rooted but when i go to cache folder its all empty and when i try to go there using shell it says access denied.
ANY developer here who is willing to help us???
I can give Team viewer access along with tab connected and a a coffee or beer anything the developer likes.
can`t root this devica. plz help
I`m also having same kind of problems. Can`t run google play on it. I have tried to root with z4root, and with some other tools. But nothing worked. plz help.

Now I know I need to update CWM bc I am on version 2.5.1.2 but it will not update. I am running on mac so cant use Odin and mobile odin is not an option for me. ROM manager will not do anything with CWM nor will goo manager do anything. Any advice? I am so frustrated with it right now.

refresh my memory on a mac, can you create a windows XP or 7 vm and do a hardware passthrough? if so I'd move that route. But like the previous poster said update it to twrp. the easiest way to do so is download the goo manager from the market click on the menu button and click install open recovery kit. But I'd check compatibility with the older cwm version. I don't think you'd have a problem, but it's always best to check.
Also how are you attempting to update CWM? It should be as easy as downloading the new version, putting it on your SD card, flashing, reboot to verify the change.

I can if i absolutely must do a partition for windows but I would rather not. I think if it came down to that then I would just do odin mobile. Money is a big concern for me since I am a single father so I know its bad but I would more then likely just stay on the old software if need be. Its not worth spending the money on cell phone software and computer software since the phone is working its just slow and wont update. Could it be that the ROM on the phone is just too old? I forget who made the ROM so I cant even look back to try and update that.
Old CWR only looks at external SD card.

Also ranger, you're in my SwiftKey suggestions every time I type ranger thought you'd get a kick out of that
@ D1PL0M4T: you can download vmware view (or the mac equivalent) for free, after that it's just a matter of getting a copy of windows in a vdmk file. It's more time consuming then anything else.

Back a few years ago when Mac first introduced their Intel models you use to be able to download a free legit copy of windows right from microsoft. From what I can tell they stopped that and it was only a trial. However, you could get the trial as often as you like so you could keep downloading it. But it was not a very good copy and was buggy running on Mac. but needless to say the problem with freeware on Mac is very hit of miss. Like most things you get what you pay for.

I agree freeware on Mac is hit or miss, it just doesn't have a big enough market share. But on the other hand for being one hardware manufacturer, it's pretty darn big. Anyway, I know vmware view does hardware pass through on pc, it would be hard to believe that it wouldn't in the mac realm and vmware view is free. Now vsphere isn't but we aren't talking about a virtualization cluster . As for a copy of xp, I remember reading a while back that someone converted the win 7 xp mode into a vmware file and from my recollection it wasn't a violation of terms of use.
Not saying it's needed but if it was something you wanted to explore. It's always fun to broaden one's horizons.

If you plan on doing any compiling on it you'll end up wanting to shoot yourself. assuming you bumped the RAM up, it still only has 1.8GHz P4 single core. now on a VM you can take advantage of your multiple cores and increased RAM and all around faster machine.
Anyway, I'm not trying to convince you so I'll drop it. But if you'd like a hand setting up a VM on a mac PM me and I'll send you quite a few links that will put you on your way.
Lastly sorry for being so passionate about this, my last job was highly against virtualization for fear it was the devil's work so now whenever there's push back from moving to vitalization (for whatever reason justified or not) I get like a PTSD and flashbacks and run around the office in a viking helmet. People with medicine are called, there's someone crying, someone shouting put down the stapler... I'm sure you get the picture. :silly:
Ahh the life as a datacenter admin...
I'm having this same issue, I'm on a Mac and bought a Note, went to update the firmware and I got to 8% until it froze and then Kies told me to use emergency recovery which stays at 0%. Now my phone is showing "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again", which I've done a few times and it just stays at 0%.
Edit: Nevermind, someone helped me, I used Odin and upgraded that way.
From what I've learned online, when rooting a device the changes that are done to the system are done on the ROM file. If true then is it possible to encrypt or overwrite on top of the ROM file to hide any past rooting information?
Reason: I've been having a USB port issue with my PC not being about to recognize the device when plugged into a PC using the micro USB cable. Searched online and found many different ways to troubleshoot the connectivity issue, but couldn't get it to work. Hit the MAYDAY button and said "no, it's not rooted", and yes it did update firmware to 13.3.2.1 so technically no, "it's not rooted"... anymore...
Question: Any ideas on how to "hide" this information to keep warranty?
I already have a replacement on it's way so I can side load through USB once again instead of using a cloud drive to transfer files back and forth. I personally think the current device I have has a corrupted file (some where) when the device died of having no battery power. Read it happening to other people, so I believe it. Used many cables, and many PC's including a Linux PC. Nothing, so Amazon support gave up, and decide to send me a replacement HDX since they concluded it's a physical hardware issue. As if one of the ports are not working to load drivers to the PCs using the pug-and-play method. I think that makes sense but I AM NOT 100% SURE OF THIS. I think it makes sense, but I'm not an expert yet. I don't know completely, so don't ask me.
What do you guys think? Am I pretty much screwed and need to forget about replacing this HDX? And probably wait for a better hardware-wise tablet to come out for a reasonable price? Or can I get the replacement, no questions asked?

Sounds good. I'll give feed back after they have received it, and again when they OK it. I was thinking that the factory reset only deals with the data on the "hard drive" portion, as in personal data or files like apps and books. I read that the ROM file of the HDX device is on the motherboard so I felt that there was no need to have to "delete", technically ignore/hide, the data of the old ROM file. I was wondering if there was a way to be sneaky and put a file that was the stock ROM and set the day the file was put there around the time the update 13.3.2.1 came out. I just don't want the issue of them saying that the warranty is void when the device is not rooted anymore .
Plus I can deal with a device that can not be recognized by a PC still. Just upload to a cloud my files using the Internet and all is good if they see it was rooted before and I have to deal with this old HDX.

Ok, so I'm an amateur Android root hacker and I was trying to install a DL'd Android file (volt) to swap external SD to internal phone staorage. I messed up. Now the tablet will not boot, as it gets stuck in the logo screen. I have tried ALL reset methods including recovery mode. When I try to select recovery mode, it only gives "NO" as as an option to factory reset. I have read online that I may be able to boot Android from an Micro SD card but this is where I get stumped. Can I use ANY 4.2.2 build, or is it device specific? If so, how do i find my build on a generic tablet such as mine? Here is what I can tell you about my tablet. It is a Tagital 9" A23 running 4.2.2. Here is title to the exact tablet on Amazon that may include some useful information. I can;t post the direct link because of my NEWB status.
Tagital® 9" Android 4.2.2 A23 Dual Core Dual Camera Tablet PC Play Store Pre-installed (Enhanced Version of A13)
As you can see, I'm only into the device for $75, but I would not only enjoy a working tablet, but also a solution to the original issue of partioned internal storage being all out of whack (502mb for device storage and then 4.8gb available, partitioned internal storage, not being used).
I apologize in advance if this is not the correct area to post, but I am a newbie. Please help!
Yikes. Sounds like you made a brick. I'd recommend looking for support via the manufacturer web site some have stock Roms for devices. Did you see if anyone had a thread here for that device? Good luck.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of...I just bought a duplicate tablet today, having it shipped overnight, do you think I can mount a recovery image from the new tablet and install on the first?

just wondering...
i'm kinda stumped.. but if you can get into recovery I believe you may be able to either download a compatible rom several that sound like they would work on your device(search via Google) or maybe backup the new one you just bought and push those file to it(Maybe via adb)/ make a flashable zip and reinstall via sd... speculating ovi cause I don't have that style of tab...
Alright, bear with me. I dont know much about this ptoblem bit Ill tell you what I know; Im counting on you.
Galaxy Tab 1, android is 3 I guess, but I havent asked so its not sure. The situation is the following. This friend of mine(woman, in her 40s) was doing something casual on the tablet, when an application popped up with the possibility of clicking "next" only, nothing else, unexitable; she clicked it once and then turned off the tablet. When she booted it up once again, all of the files were missinng. Minor cosmetic changes afaik, including the keyboard layout. I dont have more info, but Ill try and ask if you need something else. Tablet shouldnt be rooted.
Goal is the recovery of all/most files; PHOTOS are priority.
Thanks in advance.
