[Q] Broken 40 pin connector - Parts? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So my 40 pin connector on the tablet is broken. I know a picture would help, I will try to get one later. I did a search and it looks like some people have had the same issue but sent it back to Asus for repair at a ridiculous price.
I feel pretty confident with my soldering so I would not be opposed to installing one myself. Any source for parts? It's kinda specific.
Thanks

You may want to consider buying a bricked or broken screen prime from someone and replacing the entire sub-assembly (can't recall if the data connector is on a separate, ribbon-cable-connected board from the mobo or not). Unless you have experience soldering tiny things like surface-mount components (and have the necessary equipment), this may be more difficult than you think. A common soldering iron will likely be way too bulbous for the precision required to replace that connector.

Here are some infos about connectors: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056615
There were links where you can get them (at least they were there last I checked)

(how I fixed it) Dropped my Touchpad - touch not responding

Hey all,
I recently had an accident with my 32GB Touchpad I managed to recover from, so I thought I'd share the story for the benefit of anyone else who encounters the same issue. That said, if you do have this problem, proceed at your own risk. I am not advising you to do anything I did below, rather I am sharing my own experience.
Basically it got dropped around 6-8 feet down a carpeted stairwell. It appeared to land on the side edge with the volume button. To my surprise, the screen wasn't cracked and the buttons responded, but it wouldn't respond to touch.
First, I know this isn't covered by the warranty. [SOAPBOX] Of course, one could just lie to tech support and possibly get it covered, but that isn't how I roll. I've gotten by well in life by being straight with tech support but not taking any bs, not gonna change now.[/SOAPBOX] So, I did a live chat with tech support just to see what it would cost. Short answer, $238 for a tablet I paid $150 for. So no, I decided that if I couldn't fix it myself I'd part it out to others with broken displays etc, or give it to a dev. If I got any money for it, I'd buy an actual android pad.
Once again, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! I take no responsibility if you damage or brick your device.
Past experience told me that most likely a connector inside was the culprit. I search the forums and interwebs for dissembly instructions. I couldn't find any good ones, but managed to figure it out from the following two links;

If anyone knows a good dissasembly tutorial i missed on youtube or elsewhere, please post it. Anyway, I found the ribbon cables from the panel were indeed partially pulled from their connectors (see attached ribbon 1.jpg). Flipping up the black covers (see attached ribbon 2.jpg) I was able to reposition it and flipped the covers back down.
After a bit of trouble reassembling it (due to my being rough with the side catches around the bezel), my Touchpad is back to its former self, not counting a few scuffs in the plastic around the bezel from by hamfisted work. I'm happy, and my wife is happy I'm not eyeing the Touchpad I just gave her for her birthday . I hope someone benefits from this post, as I've benefited from others' posts here. Just trying to give back.
interesting read. Knowing what you know now, how long would think the whole process would take?

No more than 15 minutes. Of course, I'd try to find a better tool like the one pictured in the linked PDF in my post above. Just gotta be sure the catches around the bezel are free so as not to pull up them up as you lift the lcd panel. They're actually separate pieces of plastic, not part of the bottom mold. One had slide out from under one of the PCBs. I had to remove a few screws to lift said PCB to reposition the catch, otherwise the panel wouldn't snap back in fully.

I definitely give the thumbs up with that tutorial. Very good. A pocket knife blade was my tool of choice to take the cover off!
Thanks for the tutorial.
Sorry to revive the old thread. However, my touchpad is not responding to touch, everything else is functional (it boots perfect and able to update using JC toolbox to latest 4.4.4).
I tried to plug unplug the video connector few times (after disassembling) but still it does not respond to touch. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Do you still have WebOS or a touch enabled recovery installed? That could help determine if the problem is more likely hardware or software. If it is hardware you have already done what I could do.

I have completely wiped the system and removed the WebOS by using JC toolbox. However, I do have touch recovery and while booting in recovery also have problem for touch(does not respond to touch, can select using volume up/down and home button). Does it mean touch screen is now defective? Can it be replaced and is it worth try? Appreciate your input.
Thanks

I would agree it sounds like either the digitizer or control board may be bad. I don't know enough to say more though. As for if it is worth it, do a search on eBay. Used Touchpads sell for under $100. New for around twice that. Nonfunctional units sell for under $50. Maybe you get lucky and can buy one with a working digitizer. If it were me, I would buy a functioning used Touchpad and sell the bad one. Or keep it for spare parts. With current more powerful 10" tablets selling new for $300-500, I'd be careful not to put too much into it.
Good luck!

I couldn'd find any "more powerful" tablets with 32GB ram and wireless charging. Do you know some? I bought a used touchpad then.

You got me on wireless charging. ☺ Not counting that I was thinking of a Nexus 9 or 10, or a Galaxy Tab. A Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1" 16GB goes for $320. It has a microSD slot and an Exynos 5 Octa CPU.

Well if my son continues to beat my TP up the way he does, I will definitely look at this method for the first step to solving possible touchscreen issues haha, thanks

I need a new one so I can fix my phone. Getting a new microphone/usb flex board is useless if I can't connect the internal antennae to the mainboard..
Are you talking about the tiny gray wire on the right of the photo?
That looks exactly like a laptop wifi antenna wire, but might just be
a coaxial cable, at least from the part description.
I have the service manual for the Note, and under the part description, that
wire is called: (QCB01) CBF COAXIAL CABLE-GT-I9103
The place I get some parts from is cnn.cn in Hong Kong. The board you have
the photo of is here>> http://cnn.cn/shop/samsung-i717-galaxy-note-microusbantenna-daughterboard-p-15346.html
As for the wire itself, I don't know where you would get one, other than
snagging one from a junked out laptop. You can't splice it back together,
since the impedance of the cable would be compromised, if spliced back
together like a regular wire. Coax cable carries the signal, and if it isn't
resonate & impedance matched, the "transmitter" won't work. At the
frequencies involved, being a little off, will reduce the signal to the point
of being useless.
I believe it is an i-pex connector on that coax wire. You should be able to find something if you look at some of the wireless ISP websites. The Mini-pci cards I used to use for my wireless ISP had those connectors.
Something like this should work, but you need to make sure the specs match to the cable in the phone. No idea how you would figure that out.

Can I order one directly from Samsung?
I have no warranty, would Samsung fix my phone if I paid them?
I don't want to have to spend $600 on a new Note..

Would this cable work? I'd but this just for the cable.

I barely had enough to buy the phone, and I figured anything wrong with it that would go wrong would happen within 30 days, and things that mostly happen on accident like screens cracking or water damage isn't even covered.
And, how did I trash it when it still works fine aside from USB not working and I need a new antennae connector? Given two parts, I could easily fix it within 5 minutes...

Samsung support has a 1 year parts warranty if your USB was installed improperly(not soldered, for instance).
Why the second thread and the tourette's?
Anyways, it sounds like you got your answer for the exact part number/name. Awesome.
Just out of curiosity, why did you ever take it apart to begin with? Samsung would have fixed the broken USB port under their standard 1year factory warranty. Oh well, too late for that now...
Nevermind, I remember who this guy is now, so it all makes sense...

As for your parts, don't bother with sammy, they don't sell parts unless you're buying at retailer quantities. check ebay and other online sellers to find the parts. I've managed to find a lot of parts on Ifixit (yes they do other devices besides apple devices). GL on your hunt for the parts. You may need to just buy an entirely new board btw.

I'm pretty sure it happened when I put the Note in the cupholder of the truck and it got knocked loose; the cable probably bent the USB inside.

As I'm not 100% of all the dimensions and variable of the cable, have you
A) tested the continuity of the cable with a multi-meter to verify it is dead? (I can't tell from your picture if the cable shows any physical damage)
B) examined the length and connections to see if you could use a similar connector, say like one for a wifi card in a laptop?
C) checked to see if the original module comes with one when your order it from like ebay?
Also I don't know how your car is setup, but when I put in a custom stereo to my old corolla I was able to add a cubby under the deck and stored my phone there. of course I went from a double DIN to a single DIN so that might not be your case. Hope some of this helps.

Great advice, props on effort, +1 man.
A: the crimp connector on one side failed
B: Didn't think of that, and tried repairing cable, but I can measure the length from mainboard to microphone/usb flex board connectors
C: I didn't see it on the two sites I saw the flex board come from, but I'll look further
Also, in my Buick, I used to do that with my Atrix, but the cubby hole now, is too small for that with the bigger phone, also, that happened in the Ram 1500 I drove my mom somewhere in.
But seriously, I do appreciate you spending that much effort in helping me.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I ripped apart an old laptop and the connectors won't fit from a WIFI PCI-E X1 connector.

Well even if the cable is too long (which for any given laptop it probably will be) it could be something for you to test at the very least. the connectors do look like those I saw in my laptop (HP brand if you're curious) though they might be the wrong size. Another thought is to look for parts for the S2. Yes I know the parts probably won't match up but you may be able to find a cable with the correct connectors and salvage those. MOST manufacturers reused certain things, cheaper that way.
As for your beast of the phone, I've been looking into getting the Trident system with AMS because I kinda like the idea of getting the window mount and it clipping right into the case. those are mi thoughts.
Also I'm happy to help, I know I'm an ass and was in our previous banter (if you remember the whole USB audio thing ) but I can be helpful too haha

I don't understand why everyone is saying stupid things like that.. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix a phone. All I need is two damn parts and I can fix it in 5 minutes..
Instead of trolling, it would be more helpful if I had a link to the cable I needed.. in fact, I can turn my phone on right now, and use WiFi, and everything else but the micro USB and GSM data. Two parts would fix this.
I'm tired of people insulting my intelligence, as if I'm a retarded monkey that can't fix anything..
I'm stupid for not sending my phone to Samsung and possibly have someone else ruin my phone, when I can fix it myself given one damn cable??

I think he meant more that a truck +box + note = damage, not really insulting your intelligence. possibly, I dunno but I'm pretty depressed about it lol. I might buy That other samsung flex board just for the cable:
http://www.mengtor.com/product_show.php?category=606&pid=2820
It's for the Samsung Epic 4G, which has different frequencies on sprint, and it's not LTE I believe.
Would that make the cable automatically not work since the phone uses different frequencies? AKA would I need the cable from an AT&T specific LTE phone to work?

Is my speaker blown?

I plugged my phone in to a MegaVox portable PA speaker to use it with a metronome. Since then my media volume is silent when headphones aren't plugged in, the headphones icon stays in the statusbar, and I've only been able to hear someone in a call by using speakerphone.
My ringtone and SMS notification sounds play, but the volume is faint, at best, when I turn the volume all the way up.
If my speaker is blown...is the repair expensive (as I can't upgrade until December)?

It isn't difficult, but demands accuracy and patience. Instruction with pictures on ifixit.
I agree with the patients comments. I'm rebuilding 3 MB680 atm and the ribbon cables drive m nuts. Its the reason LCD and digitizers are kind of a pain. If you strain the didgitizer connector to much it will tear and will render the glass useless. Get a ribbon with some free tools and USE them. Search for Atrix Tear down on youtube and pay attention to how they use the "safe pry tool " it will be tour best friend. Last bit of advice I can offer when ever your dealing with any electronic devices. NEVER USE FORCE Anyone else doing starting there own repairs should do the same. I make a point to always use OEM parts. Ribbons are my only exception. I have yet to find a flaw in a replacement grade ribbon .

[Q] Question about i777 charging port replacement

I have a very specific question with regards to replacing the charging port on the i777. I have searched threads discussing charging port replacement, but was unable to find anything about this specific issue. I am currently going through my first repair on my i777 that needs a new charging port. I bought the replacement on ebay, but something stood out once I compared it to the original charging port I took out. On the original there is a small rubber piece hanging down (around where the screw holes are). On the replacement piece it's just a metal piece hanging down in the same place. Do I need to have that rubber piece on the replacement charging port? Would it even affect the functionality of the phone? Is there a way to take the rubber piece off the original and transfer it to the replacement, or should I just buy one with the rubber piece on? If someone has asked this question already forgive me, but I did not see it in the thread I skimmed through.
Here is a pic of both them side by side. The top one is the original and the bottom is the replacement I got from ebay.

It would not let me post link yet so just remove parentesis and spaces to view picture link.
That gray part is for waterproofing the microphone I believe. It just slides off of the old part and onto the new one, just be careful. Also if you have no signal, by now you may have already found the following thread. I had to do this a couple of weeks ago to get a signal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950114&page=5 I'll try harder to match up the part numbers next time!

i'll report back once i have them
i already took the phone apart just to peek around inside, the part looks just like what's already there. the picture shows some teal/aqua colored tabs towards the bottom, im assuming these are peel off for an adhesive (there did seem to be an adhesive holding the part in place).
based on that link mentioned i would say that cutting is a little extreme, it looks like they cut the board in half, which is definitely NOT how it comes stock.
again i'll report back once i've got the chips. and for under $8 with free shipping i cant really complain even if they dont work out.
The only thing you're actually cutting (electronically) is the ground plane of the board shared by the antenna/radio and the charge port. In short, there's a super low risk of messing anything up, unless you use a sawzall to complete the job.
I assume that it was more cost effective for Samsung to put those items on the same board, but it's a punk move to attach a known replacement part to an antenna that varies by region. Either way, I'm glad to know that the hack is an option but I'd be happier to know that the hack isn't necessary.

Just wanted to report success. The part from new egg worked and was really easy to swap.
I don't have the right size sim card anymore since switching my primary carry, so I can't test reception, but otherwise everything is working (charging, wifi, Bluetooth, etc)
P.s. I did not modify the item I received (no cutting) and it is a 2.3 where the original I removed was a 2.2. I've saved the 2.2 just in case something comes up.

Thanks, but I'm afraid that we won't know whether the replacement part is a proper replacement until there is a sim-card involved. Reception is the rub (see post below from the board-mod thread).

I'll see if I can find a friend with a full size Sim over the next few days and test the reliability. But honestly I'd have to it may be better for people to find a rev 2.2
But for anyone who no longer uses the phone for cell service, the new egg part works great for a cheap and easy charge port replacement.

[Q] The thin vertical piece on the mainboard that leads to USB connection cracked

Hello to anyone reading this,
This crack in the board happened after it went through the clothes washer, and it was gf's phone so i feel really horrible about it :crying:.
Anyways i have yet to even find out what this piece of the board is named. It's cracked in two places on the vertical part of the board that leads down
to where the usb connector is located (everything else appears looks ok just these two cracked pieces). I'm just looking for any help at all, hoping
someone might be able to offer any help at all, or if it's even possible to salvage. I have an uncle that is got a good amount of experience in
soldering/electrical stuff and can handle the soldering/fixing since im still a bit of a noob, but he was unsure about how to go about it since it would
require some very small wires to fix the connection traces, so if anyone can offer any advice or instruction on mending i would greatly appreciate and
can send some BTC for your help. I attached 2 images, and can supply more if you need more detail.
That, my friend, is the mother board.......
Tbh......attempting to solder it is likely to cause more problems than it solves.....
Your best option would be to forget about attempting the repair and go and look for a 'donor' phone....that is to say, a phone with a broken screen but otherwise intact....most online auction sites should have some.....other than that, bite the bullet, and send it to Samsung for repair.....

Even if you did manage to do a successful repair, these phones don't like being immersed in water even briefly, so the fact that it has gone through a wash cycle (?) is likely to have caused issues due to water penetration and short circuiting.........

Tyvm for your reply, and about the board replacing, what if i got a broken board that still had the vertical side intact could there be a location where i could remove it where it would be much easier job of reattaching to my motherboard? And i also just realize i posted in the wrong forum this is a verizon GT-7100
ANY repair using a heated soldering iron has the potential to cause further damage. Unless your uncle is an experienced electronics worker, I'd advise NOT to attempt it.....
These boards are built by computer controlled robots that don't suffer with shaky hands, can easily manipulate REALLY fine tipped soldering equipment, and know EXACTLY how long they can leave the heat applied without causing damage. With the greatest of respect, your uncle ain't one of these robots......he's human, and we ALL make mistakes......

ok, i found a pretty cheap deal on a board that's actually same exact one my phone has says good esn and working they claim, but it comes barebones meaning i'd need to simply swap the vibrator, cam, usb ribbon, etc with the ones i have already. what i'm worried about is if any of these components are highly susceptible to water damage and might need to get them as well
Mate....water damage *can* be an endless, bottomless money pit......
You might be lucky in that replacing the board *appears* to fix it.....but over time, other components may start to build up oxides, or to corrode away....and it's fair to say that any components that were short circuited by the initial immersion will have had their operating lives significantly shortened.........
The choice is yours, but I'd keep in mind that it *may* not all be 'plain sailing' in the phones future.......
