[Q] [Question] Root - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Xda forums,
I've recently bought GS3 (Actually I've pre-ordered it so it's not so recently)
I have decided I want to root my device eventhough I've already got 4.1.1 Jellybean.
But when I went to rooting guides, they've told me to download the correct kernel for my device
which I can't find anywhere! whoever can help me find it will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Download cf-auto root from original android devlopement thread and flash it with Odin. That is all you have to do. More precise instructions in the cf-auto root thread.

First you go to your phone’s Settings -> About Device and make sure your phone is GT-I9300
Turn off you Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300
Go to recovery mode by pressing Volume Down + Power Button + Home Button all together
Then press Volume Up button when a warning shows up
Connect USB cable to your phone.
On your desktop, Extract the downloaded CF-Root file (.tar)
Open Odin3 and click on PDA
Choose the .tar from the extracted CF-Root folder
Then click Start
After the green PASS has appeared in Odin3, you can now remove the USB cable
You should be able to see SuperSU and CWM Manager installed in your Samsung Galaxy S3
That’s it! Congrats

Revert back to stock...please help

Hiya guys.
Sorry for urgency, but for reasons I had to try and go back to stock. I tracked down a kernel and firmware and tried flashing them both. The firmware I did first in odin and it worked, but caused a boot loop, so went back into download mode and attempted to flash the kernel but that failed. Now the phone wont boot at all (Stuck at screen with phone on left, computer on right and exclamation mark in the middle...never seen this one before).
I have done my searching in the forum but have found no solid instructions as to what files to download. This was an UNBRANDED GS2 purchased in the UK if it helps. i.e. not locked to any carrier, purchased out of contract.
I'm at witts end with this, have not got a clue what to do from now. Sorry about this guys, any help would me greatly appreciated.

Sorry for being dumb but I have looked at that thread and yet it still does not make sense to me, sorry.
I will attempt to download the "I9100XWKE2_I9100XXKDJ_I9100XEUKD1" firmware because I think this is the one that most makes sense for my model, but I dont think it will work in my scenario. So just flash this via odin in the PDA section and all should be well? Did I not bugger anything up with the failed Kernel?
Do a search mate, you'll find your answer!
also should be in the Q & A section.

If you find this post usefull please press the "Thanks" button
Here, I'll help.
Try 'calling' this number:
*2767*3855#
It'll perform a full reset- firmware included.
ok.. here,
First, I believe you did post at the wrong section?
Second, the reason you see a Exclaimation Mark is because the phone believes that you are not using the original ROM and believe that i has been Flash before.
Lastly, You would need to get a Samsung JIG.
i have already give you the Answer.. on how to use the JIG please google.

If you purchased the device at Carphone Warehouse look for firmware labelled as CWP. If anywhere else then look for XEU labelled firmware. Flash it with Odin as per the instructions in the link above. When you are done boot to recovery and do a factory reset.
The picture depics your phone connected to a pc! Do not use a jig, thats when it is bricked, your phone is not bricked. Your phone is asking you to be put it into download mode and flashed (via Odin), a rom .Unplug usb, take battery out and put it back in. Press home, down volume at the same time as switching phone on, that should get you into download mode. You can now flash. Take battery out now and read on.
Go to Samfirmware, login, toolbox, firmware, android and galaxy s2. Download xxkf2 rom. Find xwkdd.tar insecure kernel on web and dowload it.Go into download mode on phone,as you did before. Flash xxkf2 via Odin. You will now have Gingerbread 2.3.3 unrooted.Flash xwdd as pda in Odin. You will now have a kernel that can be rooted via 1click root on your pc via usb.
On another post, I've posted this to SG2 questions and answers not the to the developer forums, which I believe I can't do until I've posted 10 posts to other forums.

If that does not work which inkyadrian has stated then go off to ebay and buy a £4 usb jig for i9100 which also resets the binary counter for non stock rom's
This tool is invaluable so i would suggest buying one anyway.

Use Odin to flash speed mod kernel. Place it in the PDA and flash. You can download it from his thread here on xda. Just search Google.
Steps:
1. Download the kernel
2. Put phone in download mode (down volume, home and power)
3. Open Odin and click PDA and then find the speedmod kernel found here ( http://vln01.helochat.com/tourist/speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-21-Odin.tar )
4. Flash!!

View attachment ninphetamine-2.1.3-release.tar
just put that in pda in odin and flash
thats how i did it, its already rooted and has CWM then flash whatever rom or kernel you want if you want (that one's out dated now)
and the kernel the guy above said will be already rooted aswell so no need to use s2root

Hi, I'm pretty new to this too.
Just wondering, I used "GT-I9100_XWKI8_insecure.tar" to flash my Galaxy SII, then s2root. I get superuser, but I can't find CWM.
Can I use this kernel you guys posted as well? Or is it for his specific phone?
I'm really having problems getting CWM, and I'm scared of trying stuff before getting a backup.
So if installing that kernel installs CWM as well, and works for my model too, then I'm going for it.
Thanks.
hi, i have just recently got another galaxy s2 after nicely cracking the screen on my old one :S the stats are as follows
galaxy s2
4.0.3
i9100xxlps
3.0.1519100xwlp7sl340913
i downloaded and flashed the closes kernal which was xxlp6 (this was the closest) and now it seems stuck in the start up screen, odin flashes it successfully and it starts to reboot but all i have on screen is samsung galaxys11 with yellow triangle and it just hangs there and won't go any further, i followed the instructions to the letter so i don't know whats gone wrong, i found this thread and i have found and downloaded the speedmod kernal and tried to flash that over using odin, again it says successfull but will not go past the loading screen, please help i don't know what to do or what i could have possibly done wrong
thanks in advance, emma

Also, download the stock ROM required from either sammobile.com or using the PC version of CheckFus.

Best Method to Root??

Hey guys.. Just came from an HTC One X. So I was thinking of rooting this GS-III.
I have searched the XDA Forums i cant find any. Plus there are loads of "One-Click Rooting Techniques". Which one did u used to root the device. And the one which is the LEAST RISKY!
I'll give u a "Thanks" for it!
1. download cf root 6.4 from original development thread
2. put your mobile in download mode
3. start odin in pc , load the tar file you downloaded in pda section
4. flash

Well that obviously depends on which guide your referring to doesn't it!?
....Just flash Siyah kernel via odin then install superuser/busybox if not installing custom rom.
So my friend rooted it and she got a samsung logo but the phone is unable to boot up. She used this file, CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5-PROPER. Phone is able to go to download mode though. Any help?
Yes. Volume down+menu+power then download syiah(gokharmol) and install via Odin look into guides.

bricked s3?

Hey guys, I tried to download a gaaps file and I think it was the wrong one because I ended up completely deleting my OS. The battery fell out and now I'm unable to get into recovery mode. I can get into odin mode, though. Is there any help for me? My computer doesn't recognize the device when I plug it in, either.

Which model number and carrier is your Galaxy S3? Fortunately if you can get into Download (Odin mode) mode your phone is only soft bricked. What you can do is first download and install the USB drivers for your device, these Samsung drivers should be compatible with your device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555. Next, you can download and install the latest version of Odin from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539. After you have done that you can download the stock firmware for your Galaxy S3 by searching for it and downloading here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/. Then you can boot your phone into Download mode and use Odin to flash the stock firmware you downloaded. This should successfully restore your device to working order. Let me know if you still have questions I'll be happy to help you out.

US cellular is my carrier and the model number is SCH-R530. I couldn't find that particular model when searching for the stock firmware on the website you provided. I've googled it as well without any luck. Also, I've downloaded and installed the drivers earlier and they cannot recognize my device. I'll try it with the website you gave me, but I'm pretty sure thats where I installed them earlier.

I would recommend taking a look at this guide and following the "Boot into Download Mode" part of the guide. The guide includes where to find the stock firmware for the U.S Cellular model Galaxy S3 and how to flash it via Odin.
Okay, thank you! I am currently downloading the stock firmware. Is it okay if I pm you if I have anymore questions?
