GTA Vice City killing my battery - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce the ridiculous battery drain caused by playing this game on my Galaxy S3? It literally kills my phone in 90 minutes.

Its a full 3d ram and processor intensive game , what do you expect. This isn't Pac man .
So you play a game for over an hour and a half and expect a full battery? Use your head

No, I expect to play a game for an hour and a half and not have a dead phone. GTA 3 drains less than 50% battery if I play it for the same time.

I noticed the same thing. I can go for over an hour and a half (I have the S3 i9300, so I don't about you), but yeah, the drain is ridiculous compared to 3. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that it's a more complex game (which it is), but it's not THAT much more graphically-complex than 3. Sure, cars have a sun-glare effect on them in the day light but that's about it. Hopefully I'm wrong and it's some kind of bug; performance is fine, even fully-maxed out (very smooth). But the drain is so high that my phone uses more power than it takes in while plugged in and playing. I cannot charge and play at the same time; it merely slows down the draining.

I really hope they fix this bug soon (if you could call it that). The graphics settings should be more scalable. When playing on my Galaxy S2 I can't see any major differences between the detail settings. Even on low detail + ~50% resolution settings I have to charge my 2000mAh battery twice a day!

Game destroying battery life?? - "Great Little War Game"

I got the game Great Little War Game (GLWG) at the Android Market during the $.10 deal and I gotta say its A LOT of fun - amazing turn based strategy game, but its absolutely destroying my battery life. My normally steady, linear decline in battery goes to a dive. Itll be at about a 10-20 degree decline with normal use, then goes to about 70 degree dive. Is this normal??? I know its a pretty taxing game with the graphics and whatnot of the game (amazing btw) but to kill it that fast??
I'll have to pull it up here soon and take a screenshot of the battery graph after playing it, pretty impressive.
Sorry if this belongs in "Known Battery Drainers", this was a slightly more specific one.
And reading some reviews on the Market, people report it being not that hard on the battery so I'm curious.
A lot of games are like that it seems, I bought Minecraft PE from the $0.10 deal and it totally owns my battery.
yeah i got this great game too and it is the worst ive ever seen at battery drain. i cant even have it plugged in and not have it die (after a while), its crazy. the game also makes my phone pretty hot.
Ha I was just playing and the phone got so hot a warning came on the sscreen saying charging paused battery too hot or too cold. it was hooked up to the tv though. touched it and nearly burned my hand I'm probly frying my cpu.
Yea. Same issues over here. My phone gets extremely hot and the battery plummets.

I noticed the heat too and yea! Even plugged in with a Palm 1000mAh charger it can't keep up! Craziest thing ever, is it just that hard on the processor?

that game probably taxes the video harder than other games, so the battery dies faster. just my guess.
I love this game but I totally agree that it anniilated my Desires battery. Im getting this phone tomorrow and cant wait to play grand theft auto 3

Go to the game's settings menu. Click "Best Graphics". Screen will go black and turn back on. It should now say "Fast Graphics." Turn "Mission Intros" off. Over on the left side of the Settings screen are 3 sliders. The bottom one controls some of the scene animations (like water flow.) Change it to anything other than "Ultra". All these things helped me to reduce battery drain and overheating. The slight decrease in game visuals is a small price to pay for better battery life and not turning your phone into a hotplate.

Thanks for the heads up! I really appreciate it! Hoping this helps a bit
Just tried it with the changes and I'll admit it doesn't look near as good but definitely playable and doesn't really take away from the fun of it. HUGE improvement in heat and battery drain! Thank you so much for that advice!

I think this game destroyed my battery. I was hooked and played it for hours while charging (although it still drained my battery).
I killed all running apps and then let the phone charging over night. Next morning the phone was so hot it almost burned my hand and it was dead. I left it cool down and tried turning it on, but it didn't. I plugged it in again and the battery wouldn't charge. Then I swapped my battery with my wive's and everything worked perfectly.
Now I have a new original battery and the phone is workibg again. I don't plan using any battery hogger game/app again.

So after using it more, even with stuff turned down it still seems to consume so much battery that the charger can't keep up. Still seems to get hot but again not as bad. I wish they would fix it

Battery dies too fast

hello
I'm currently using miui rom 1.9.16 with siyah kernel v.2. 6.1+
with low usage and juice defender the battery is quite good but if i use some apps and 3g data it can go to 10% in 6-10 hours
I'm playing a game called age of legends that seems to take most battery (about 50%) .. with my carrier rom i think battery was better but still quite bad
maybe I'm not using siyah good enough idk
any help will be appreciated
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
The SGS2 screen takes a lot of battery, so if you play a game for long, it could affect the battery duration.
yeh but that will be on display usage and i have it on 10% and i usually set my brightness very low so it should save some as well
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I believe Miui is the problem. Miui is a battery drainer.
Your screen uses batterie. This has nothing to do with your rom or kernel.
Avoid white screens/backgrounds as this will use more batterie then dark ones.
I know the screen takes battery .. but the system shows battery usage percentage and screen is maybe at 10%.. i think the game is the problem but it wasn't so bad with other rom so there's probably some problem with miui/siyah competabilty with the game.. the game is over 50% according to the battery usage
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Don't separate game from screen, unless you're able to play that game with the screen off...
The total consumption is 60% during the time you're playing the game.
I don't know if the fault is the game itself, but when playing games for a couple of hours, it drains battery a lot. That is a fact.
If you use your phone to play like 2+ hours, you probably will be charging it at night since you will be out of battery. It's not a phone or battery problem, games always tend to drain battery.
I need to charge 1-2 times a day for it to last until the night... well i guess I'll just need to try some more roms and kernels to see if it's getting better
thanks for the help everyone

What's the screen on time like?

Hey guys I want to give my mom my sisters EVO 3D but before I do I want to know what is the normal screen on time on stock ICS. I'm only getting about a hour and a half or two if I use it continuously after unplugging. I feel it needs a new battery but being that it's an outdated phone idk if that's normal usage for the 3D.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
for moderately high(wifi on, browsing, playing videos) usage this is quite normal on stock battery. on low usage its typically 2.5 - 3 hrs (maybe more if the battery is new)

I would say low usage. Battery holds steady while screen is off but once I turn it on battery starts draining pretty fast. I was expecting at least 2-3. On my S2 back then I never hit lower than 3 and both are about the same in mah.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
i'm pretty sure evo 3ds lcd screen consumes more battery than the samoled screens of s2 but yes you are getting low screen on times. i'd suggest you get the extended batteries for better results. A new stock battery wont be much of an improvement but extended batteries do make this heavy phone even more so. if weight is an issue go for normal batteries, otherwise extended
Got another question for you bro. Sorry lol. But isn't the Spiderman 3D game that came with the phone supposed to be free? 45 minutes battery life

My Galaxy S II (and pretty much any Android evice I've picked up) has a usable battery life of 45 minutes. I unplug the phone at 9 A.M. in the morning after charging it to 100%. By 12 in the afternoon I would have browsed the Internet, checked social apps and played a few rounds of a game for what feels like 45 minutes in total. By then the battery is at 30% and I have to put it away in fear of it dying before I get home. The phone is useless for the rest of the day. My iPhone 4 with its 3 year old battery lasts 2 days like this.
No wakelocks, 99% deep sleep. I have a 3200mAh battery which feels like it lasts 1.5 hours before I have to put it away in fear. Basically the phone is not usable at all due to the user being in constant fear of the battery dying.
If I don't use the phone at all it's down to 20% by the end of the day with no wakelocks and 99% deep sleep. If I don't use my iPhone 4 with its 3 year old battery, it still lasts 20 days.

Well, or you buy a new battery for the S2 or you keep going with your "stylish" i phone. The world is not complicated and phones are not rocket science.
And by the way, games drain battery hard, very hard.
Charge at work, upgrade the battery or stick with your iPhone.

I hope you checked with BBS, if so and as you said "99% of deep sleep", it means that the games are draining your battery.Well, sometimes even a "newish" battery can be faulty.Try with different battery,I mean a good one for sure. And if your results are the same, stop playing those freakin' games.

Yes I use BBS and have completely disabled all bloatware using Autostarts. I have the original battery and the Mugen Power 3200mAh battery. The battery life is proportional to with the capacity of the batteries I've used.
The primary use of my phone is mobile gaming. I don't care about the phone part except for receiving push notifications for email, IMs etc. which I then reply to on the PC anyway.
My SG2 and pretty much every Android device I pick up has 45 minutes of battery... Either you have won the lottery and got a defect phone several times or there is something fishy going on..
My sg3 lasted for 24 hours, my s4 last for a couple of days, my motorola razr lasted a week and my iphone 4 went for a day and sometimes 24 hours..
Even if I stress test my sg4 and s3 all the time it would last for a lot loooonger than 45 minutes..
I know the games will use a lot of juice but 45 minutes? Something is wrong...
What kind of games are we talking about? I do not play so much myself, just online poker, some tetris and so on, my iphone and android phones is pretty similar when talking about these games...
You could go for a Nintendo Game Boy etc
That said I taught ICS used less battery than JB. And it's pretty weird if you have the mugen battery. My Razer had a 3300 battery and that would go for days, even with heavy usage.

I've extensively used the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Nexus One, Nexus S. All of them can be used heavily (3G, gaming) for just 45-60 minutes before the battery is low and you have to save it for the rest of the day.
Simply listening to music for 2 hours in the gym drains 35% battery! WTF? This is without any equaliser and while using an external headphone amplifier. I could listen to music for 2-3 hours a day for 1 week on my old iPod touch before needing to charge it.

Possibly a crap battery, but im going to suggest you don't use the samsung charger. The phone holds a wakelock whilst charging, keeping the phone running at 200Mhz, so unless you are delivering 650mA, your phone will die. Therefore I suggest you are using an unofficial charger, which doesn't deliver the needed 650mA, or you have an unofficial battery which wont accept 650mA. Either way, if you're not using Samsung appliances you shouldn't really be complaining about crap battery.

I am using the original Samsung charger and the original Samsung battery. I have an additional 3200mAh Mugen Power battery.
It drains faster than the charge rate only if I'm playing games.
Could be many things then, but as you say BBS doesnt report wakelocks, it would all just be conjecture. Try and pull a logcat after an hour or so of deepsleep and see if you notice anything untoward. Also, have you done simple things like turn WiFi off when you're not using it? That scans every 15 seconds or something. Or if you're in a crap phone signal area, your phone will keep scanning for and trying to connect to a better signal.

It's the phone obviously. Like I said if I put it in Aeroplane mode than the battery is still at 99% at the end of the day. If it's in normal mode it drains severely. I don't have this problem on any other phone. I've flashed the latest modem for my region and tried older modems for my region as well.
Not sure but it sounds like you have technical issues with your phone.
I have the official Samsung uprated battery and I loose about 60% out of the phone battery a day with heavy usage. Usually doesn't get to that point as I charge at work or home when not in use.
I take it as a given that all smart phones, tablets or laptops have ****e battery life.
Blanket generalisations about specific OS' or brands being superior to others is just silliness.
Saying that, when it comes to battery life, my HP Touchpad running CM 10.1 pisses all over any iOS device and the ghost of Steve Jobs agrees with me!

60% at the end of the day is a joke. It's unacceptable. Without use My iPhone 4 is at 95% at the end of the day with everything switched on and every possible syncing enabled. Why is it so hard for Samsung to produce a properly working phone after 5 years? I am 100% sure their latest phones like the Galaxy S 4 behave exactly the same way no matter what PR bull**** they try to spin.

Seems the iPhone is the device meant for you, for me in normal usage it lasts 2 and a half days altogether with the stock battery, heavy usage like a gameplay of Gamelofts Modern Combat series or N.O.V.A gives me 3 hours of continuous play after which the battery reaches around 7-10%, wifi in JB sadly kills my battery only gets around 6 hour's with continuous usage which was greater in my GB and ICS days.
But 95% at the end of the day for the iPhone 4 with everything ON is a bit of an exaggeration(the hell kind of unremovable battery is that?) don't you think?

Of course it gets hot if you do anything CPU intensive for any length of time (even more so on charge). The CPU has no cooling, no effective heatsink & is in a very enclosed space near other components that also get hot (including the battery). It's not like a PC CPU which has at least one fan & a heatsink (and vents), not to mention plenty of clearance (compared to a phone at least) between components in a desktop PC at least which allows heat to dissipate better.

I know this is an old thread, but I just started having this problem. I've had my Galaxy S2 since March 2013 but only in the past week as the phone been heating up and draining battery power to almost nothing in a matter of four or five hours. I used to be able to use the phone multiple times over the course of the day with no issue of heating or battery power, but ever since Friday 12/13 I've had this problem. It gets so hot I keep it off until I need it, and I'm used to keeping it turned on. Even keeping it in airplane mode doesn't keep it from heating up. I've had other Samsung Android phone users tell me of the same thing happening only in the past week, not before that. Any idea what it could be?
