I'm fairly certain that you can't do that. The internal memory in your phone is actually internal memory on your phone and the external sd is actually an sd card. You can't just transfer memory from one to the other because they are physically different devices.
It's like trying to add a 4GB flash drive to your computer's hard disk, you just can't do it.

Yes, you can. By enabling swapping, you'll buy memory size at the cost of memory speed. This question pops up every week, and a quick search would have given you an answer like this.

Hm.. you can try using SD_Ext. Its a partition that can be used by apps to store Android apps, cache, etc. (Normally found in /data). I'm not too sure about the procedures, but you could do a google search on it. It basically requires you to resize your sd cards partition, add another partition, and requires some small mods to your current android system. (Installing an app, etc.)
Try here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750888 and google for sd ext'
EDIT: If you meant extending your RAM, follow kuisma's post. But if you meant extending your ROM or Internal mem, this post applies to it.

You are both correct, but talks about different things.
You can not transfer physical memory from the SDcard or internal NAND flash to RAM, but you can use them to increase the virtual memory.

Hi iv connected my phone to my pc via usb I wanted to transfer 10GB file size over on to my sd card but it says file destination too small when there is enough space as my card is 16gb, any help please?
Your sd may be 16gb but you can use only 11.50 gb as the rest are used by the phone.. So I guess you have used over 1.50 gb already and there is not enough space... Try through an external sd or free some space...

But it says I have 11.5gb free?
The file size is only 9.75gb
I see that there is a usb storage in 11.50gb and a system storage in 1.97 gb. Maybe the second is for the applications and is taken from the usb storage...
Why does the phone use 4.5GB of the SD cards space? I thought there was internal storage too.

Yeah I thought so too but somehow it does...

It's not only one file, is it? The file system (fat32) can't handle such big files.

Yeah it is fat32, and yeah it is one file. Is there a way around this?
Fat32 can only handle file sizes of around 4GB each time. So each file you want to transfer can only be around 4GB in size. I believe the SGS2 works with an NTFS formatted card, and with NTFS you can transfer any file size.
Can the file you are trying to transfer be broken up into small segments or must it remain as a 10GB file?
Chris.

It's a video file. So must stay as one. I'll try to convert sd card as ntfs
S2 can't recognise ntfs
Are you sure? Pretty sure I read somewhere that it does. Oh well, is fat32 the only format it reads?

Seems to be, because when formatted to NTFS it says unrecognised format please reformat
Anybody else got ideas?
Try encode with smaller bit rate and smaller resolution?
I know this issue has been covered many times on the forum but I couldn't find a proper way to solve it.
I am having a Galaxy S2 running official jelly bean 4.1.2.
I don't know why Samsung has partition the internal storage this bad :/
It only gives us 2 GB for installing apps from the play store and currently I'm running out of Internal storage because I keep a lot of apps on my phone. I can't even move any app (not even a single app) to USB Storage. I always get the error that "Unable to move app. Not enough storage space."
I got around 6-7 GB free in my USB Storage so there is a lot of space there.
Is there any way to increase the Internal storage (2 GB) to a bigger size 3 GB or 4 GB or a solution so that I can transfer the apps to the USB storage?
Thanks in advance.
Usb. Is were the Rom and kernel ie running system is. Sd card is were you keep apps and things and ext sd is well ext sd card. If you have 7gb free then you put them there. Why would you want to put them in Usb. ? Usb is for running system not for apps. Sd card is for that.

Okay then What I meant is that how can I move the apps which are installed in my Internal storage(2GB) to the usb storage(or as u defined SD card) Since it always gives me the error "Unable to move app. Not enough storage space"
I dont have an external SD card plugged in my Galaxy S2. Just the internal 16 gigs. is all I have
What space is left on both pls. only part of the apps will be moved to Usb. Why do you want to fill up Usb??

On my phone, if apps are moved to sd they exist on the external SD card. Maybe that's why it says you don't have enough space, because you don't have an external sd card? I guess any small one would do, no need to splash out for a 64GB one...

I got your point mate. You meant that I must need to have a external micro SD card to move my apps?
And in this case I can't move them to my USB Storage?
One thing more, I could move my apps to usb storage when I was using Super Nexus 2.0 ROM..

The internal storage is almost full just some MB's left there out of 2GB. And the USB storage got enough 6GB-7GB left. I want to fill up the USB so that I can download more apps because at this moment,my internal memory is completely full and I cant download any app from the Play store so that's why I want to move them to the USB storage.

I just checked on my phone: with external sd card I can move apps to sd, without I get the message you mentioned. So either use an external sd card or a ROM that allows you to use the internal sd card.
Okay thanks for your help.
I guess I need to buy a 16 gb micro SD card. Can anyone tell me how much a good micro SD card costs? With a speed that won't be causing problems so that I can play games easily without affecting the speed.

Hi.
Can i make something like partition on internal storage? i have i9300 16GB internal and it woyld me nice to make 2-3 partition like C, D, E for games, apps, photo. Or game and apps, photo, rest and maybe protect before changing roms. I liek to change roms but its so bored installing all the times the same apps.
Also i want to buy mini sd card but waiting for answer bcs i dont know what to buy and ill install every apps and game on sd card so before change rom ill still have on sd card.
Don't mess with the internal storage, it isn't an sd card and you'll hard brick the phone.
Put everything on your external sd, leave the internal as empty as possible -this will reduce wear on the nand memory.

When changing roms you still would have to reinstall all games, nevermind if on internal or external sd. Just use Titanium Backup to make it easy and as said don't touch internal memory!

I don't think so as the base app or at least some parts is still installed in internal memory whereas e. G. Save games you could copy to external and copy back later if you can find the files.

Well...
I've got a moto E and a 8GB SD card. I have been using MM(AICP) for like months and I really love the ROM and its battery backup but the thing is I'm running out of storage space.. The system itself takes like 1.2 GB out of 2.1 GB available internal storage and few basic apps - I'm full...
I have only 1 game and would like to try more like I used to but can't download as play stores says I'm out of space... Updating apps have been an issue too.. I want to fix this by buying a Samsung 32GB EVO+ class 10 (20MB/s Write Speed) and use it as my internal storage...
Worth it?
Anyone using their SDCards as internal storage? Bugs or Good Experience?
Should I buy or go back to CM11?
-Thanks
Yes. It will be worth it and the problem you are facing is faced by everyone.
So is your phone rooted? If not search xda for methods to root your phone. Then use Link2sd. You can find detailed guide on how Link2sd works in xda itself. if not then i can help.
How link2sd works? In short:-
It requires 2 partitions of your sd card (you will know how to partition your sd in every link2sd guide) one partition for media storage like songs videos images etc and the other will work as internal memory. For this you will require rooted device. And also you will need Foldermount which will enable you to move the obb or game data from internal to external sd. And root is necessary for this too. Hope it helps.
Marshmallow has inbuilt feature of using Memory Card as Internal Storage.
I am using it from a month and honestly no bugs.
The only problem is that you have to format your SD card in the phone itself to use again as portable storage device.
The second thing is that If you format your phone or start using another ROM your SD card data will be of no use and you will have to format it again.
Hope I helped you.
Thanks both of you... I should go for a 32GB class 10 then?

Now... I've got the SD Card. What should I prefer? Link2SD or Marshmallow's feature?
I want to get the best performance out of SD card... Plus hassle free operation.

marshmallows feature since it automatically moves all apps to SDcard.
One more thing link2sd will create partition out of your SD card while marshmallow will automatically format your SD card as internal storage..
Marshmallow feature is strongly preferred.
Hope I solved your query.?
Well I've been using this hybrid method lol. I partitioned my SD card so that - one partition is used for marshmallow's feature and rest space as portable storage
Didn't wanted to go all in as the feature encrypts the entire card and makes it unusable on other devices.
My phone's running smoother than before maybe coz of the Class 10 UHS-1(though UHS-1 speeds aren't supported by my device) card I've been using. I'm getting ~11.63 MB/s which is faster than phone stock internal storage(~11MB/s).
Thanks for all you suggestions and inputs!
is it possible to upgrade the memory inside with more than 128gb? because using the native android 13 move apps to sdcard is unstable. any other tipsto increase storage?
No. Put only apps on the internal memory and all other data on the SD card. Apps should never go on the SD card because of bandwidth limitations.
I corrupted my exFAT32 memory card while writing a single file of 4GB it is not recommended to use SD card unless you move app that you use very often.

Yeah funny things can happen. I never had a flash memory go corrupt on me unless it was misused in over 15 years and dozens of cards. A good card is very reliable.

Never tried it. No reason to. However to load a SD card I transfer over 400gb, largest files being 2gb or so. Largest folder is 242gb. Copy/paste only.
Always do transfer with the card in the phone; don't remove the card to do them. Always format the card in the phone before using. Never share cards with different devices writing to them unless you format it first after the switch. Sometimes, most times you get away with it but it will lead to a corrupted card sooner or latter. Canon cams for one...
