[Q] I have su but can't get root permission - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I'm new here but have been messing around with android for awhile. I spent all afternoon searching for an answer but haven't been able to find anything. I had rooted my prime but not unlocked it while it was on ics, I used ota rootkeeper to keep root when I upgraded to jb but i think when asus sent out another update i forgot to save root. I still have su in /system/bin and superuser installed but it won't prompt me to give any programs root access. I typed in su in a terminal emulator and it said permission denied. so my question is, how do I get root back without unlocking?

Does this thread help ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911261&highlight=partial+root

I was able to get root back back doing something similar. Somehow the permissions got messed up for su. I went into adb and got root permission through CD/ system then ./usr/we-need-root/su-backup; su. Then I pushed new su, busybox, and superuser.apk files and fixed the permissions and changed the owner of su using chown and chmod.

Lost root OTA 10/12 (version 45.3.6.en.US)

Just wanted to share that I lost root with installing this OTA update. I used the Photon Torpedo method and still have the scripts, I can get root on console but unless I'm already root if i run "su" I get permission denied. The permission denied is in the log for superuser however the prompt doesn't show up.
I probably won't have time to dig into this further until the weekend but wanted to have a thread for others who are wondering..

You are suppose to lose root when you apply an official OTA root. Just re-root it using the Photon Torpedo method. I am confused where you are lost at.

$ /system/bin/su
Permission denied
$ su
Permission denied
rerun (I don't have ADB to copy/paste on this computer):
$ cd /data/tmp
$ ./photon-torpedo.sh
.... the usual... end result..
[email protected]:/data/tmp# ./install-su.sh
[email protected]:/data/tmp#
Note: no errors, also did this manually to make sure..
exit / rerun terminal (or anything else requiring root)
$ su
Permission denied
Those steps worked on previous updates however don't work with this update. Not having ADB I'm unable to type a lot of commands easily to diagnose further..
I used the one click root and have no issues at this point. SU running ok
- Installed Update
- Ran Torpedo like before
- Root Access

Update superuser
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
$ cd /data/tmp
$ ./photon-torpedo.sh
[email protected]:/data/tmp# /system/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
[email protected]:/data/tmp# chmod 4775 /system/bin/su
Do this if updating superuser fails
what's new in this version? work with the unlocked bootloader
I know with the previous OTA update, we had to flash back to stock, or some people were having issues with it. Is that the case with this one as well? I have a feeling I answered my own question, but I am not sure I am correct on the above information. So if anyone has any info, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

[Q] Lost Permissions of SU in system/bin/su

Well guys i used a 1 click root to root my lg esteem from metropcs.
Worked perfect, than an update came and the phone become unrooted.
So i changed the permission of su in system/bin/su
It worked! my phone was un rooted again
Than this is my fault and the part iam stuck on -.-
I used root explorer and changed the permission of Su to match the other files.
I restarted and lost root! crap
Now whats even worse is, i cant use SU in adb shell any more
I just get the $ symbol everything i enter the su command under the adb shell and it wont give me root access to even changes the permissions back.
So now what i do, i cant use one click root anymore, and i cant get root with adb shell:
HELPPPPPPP
XD
I can see it is a real complicated situation and no doubt you messed up everthing. Maybe hard to find someone can help here. Give us the solution when you get it. Thanks.
I have heard of people using the lg recovery tool to recover bricked phones,
when it detects your phone isnt booting correctly it re flashes it.
But the problem is, my boots perfectly , so it just tells me my phone is up to date.
There has got to be a way to trick it some how....
Anyway off topic, how do i get my root back XD
Install root binary again.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
You mean re install Su binary file to bin and xbin folders?
Or am i missing something?
ok i was able to change the permissions back on the system/bin/su file
Now things get werid,
I still cant run su command in adb shell as root
I checked the permissions of system/bin/su
i set chmod to 6755
Thats right isnt it?
The permissions DID CHANGES
so i dont get why root checker is telling me i dont have permission still......
I got it working i re installed binary 3.0.3 and i had root access again.
Than right after i set chmod to 6777 on /system/bin/su
i lost root again, what does this mean?

[Q] Lost root, can't restore it

I installed the leaked ICS update, but I have apparently lost root. I tried using Voodoo, but it just says that it has been denied Superuser permissions and that there is no root backup available.
So I tried just plain rooting it using the Motofail method again, to no avail. It says that it is successful in completing the exploit.
However, no matter what app that requires root that I open, it says that the app has been denied Superuser permissions without even prompting me. Root checker says I am not rooted.
I went into the Superuser app, and I went to update the SU Binary. It says that Superuser has been granted Superuser permissions. But then it fails out at the end and says "This updater cannot update the su binary on phones that have some kind of write protection like S-ON. You can continue to use Superuser with your outdated binary, or update su with ROM manager."
I shouldn't even need to update the binary though, since it says I have the latest one installed.
What can/should I do? It's getting kind of annoying not having root on my phone.
Something along the same line happened to me too bro,I also made a thread about it but to no avail:-/ if you find something out,let me know and I'll do the same.

Try this on ics terminal
Code:
./system/su-backup
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system
rm /system/bin/su
ln -s /system/su-backup /system/bin/su

So if you dont have root access, will the terminal move the unzipped su file? How can you apply this to your sysytem? Voodoo doesnt give you options to search for the file either. Of course, nothing has superuser permissions without root either. I guess Im too much of a n00b.
Same here
Na dude its not noobish,im tryna figure out everything myself,I've been flashing since the hd2,so i know a couple things but this is just mind boggeling lol
I'm at a loss. I've downloaded your su-backup file, but I don't know how to move it to the /system folder, as it is write protected, and I don't have root to bypass that. And whenever I tried typing things in using the terminal, it just denied everything.

You can't move this file to system folder because you have a non-rooted device. Be patient, we are working hard on that....

[Q] update to jb and root isnt working properly

before i made the update i did a backup of the root with voodoo ota rootkeeper.
now after the update rootkeeper the box "root permission granted" is unchecked and i dont know how to change it.
i tried to delete the "su backup" but it didnt work.it is written that the su backup is deleted but when i restart the rootkeeper it is still there.
i found a thread which could help me :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911261
(For those with 'partial' root after JB update - regain root).
with adb the command su works.
but the problem is when i start adb shell there is no device listed anymore.i still can browse through the directory of my asus prime but i cannot push files because then there is no device error.
when i quit adb and restart adb to run "adb devices" the device is listed but after i start adb shell there isnt any device listed anymore.
cheers

Don't delete the SU backup - that is all you have with root at the moment.
It isn't clear which steps you can do.
Push files to device (in any state, /data/local/tmp for example?)
SU within ADB shell?
remount /system within ADB?
Seems like you can make it, if you work out the right things to do...
thx for the fast reply. yeah su within adb.
step 1:adb shell
step 2:su
step 3: yeaaaaahh... i found my mistake!!!
thx again for your answer , i solved it now.
for everyone who has the same problem.follow the steps from these link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911261
i made a mistake before .
last question:what can i do next time to prepare myself a better way?

I like SuperSU instead of SuperUser.
Check to see if you still are rooted by installing another app that requires root. (SuperSU will do).
What I did was simply have SuperSU forget OTA Rootkeeper, then close OTA Rootkeeper completely meaning ending it completely and then opening it again and having SuperSU ask if I want to grant it SU permissions again.
I don't remember if SuperUser lets you forget an app so it asks you again or not.

Android on Wetab

hi guys,
i have a wetab, and recently i installed windows 8 on it, and it works so good
since 2 days i liked to try and see how will android be on it but i dont want to format the windows 8
therefor i made an sd card bootable with android 4.0.3 installed on it, it the the project android-x86
in all cases all went well, but i realise that it have superuser.apk , and yes the rom is rooted, BUT
you cant grant access for root, what i mean is
i can open the root explorer, go to system/app delete what ever i want it work, but when i want to change permission
for example i cant it say i must gain root, i open superuser make the response always allow, but no clue, keep denying
everything...and what i saw also in system/app that all the apps permission is set to rwxrwxrwx and it is odexed rom
tried to update superuser...the same story never worked. tried to replace the su and busybox in system/xbin, and superuser.apk in system/app,
and su in system/bin with the latest versions....it didnt boot up lol the android is no longer detected.....and there is noway to go to recovery since it has not.....
so when there is root how i can edit or manage or gain root access ???
and by the way in terminal command
adb shell
root
i got this # so root is available
Lol....no one ?
