Phone won't charge or recognize USB connection unless battery removed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have about 6 months old Galaxy S2.
Since yesterday I've been having trouble getting it to charge. Connecting a charger while the phone is on or trying to connect it to the PC doesn't do anything. I've tried different cables and charges (ones that used to work until yesterday).
The only thing that gets it to charge is if I remove the battery, connect the charger, insert the battery. After it runs on its charging fine.
Do you think its a software or hardware issue? Anyone had similar one?
Thanks

Strange USB charging issue

So I went out and bought a 2nd USB cable to leave at work to charge my phone. But for some reason the USB cable I bought doesn't charge the phone...instead it drains the battery..??? The light is on and the icon shows it is charging when I have the USB cable connected and I can even mount the SDcard with it. But the battery percentage slowly goes down. The USB cable that came with the phone works fine without any issues.
Is there something special about the stock USB cable? Do I have to buy a certain type of cable to make charging work?
I bought another two cables, even used a Motorola USB cable but never noticed that... it never happened to me.
My guess is:
Fact:
- charging through the pc USB port is so slow, to get full charge you need 6-8 hours compared to 1.5-2 hours through the wall..
Scenario:
You are using your phone or running heavy application while charging it so it drains more battery than charging ..
Just a guess.

Cannot charge with Wall Charger, only USB works

Hi everyone. I own a GS3 that has been running flawlessly for about 3 weeks but since last 2 days it has developed a problem whereby it only charges via the laptop USB port and not the wall charger. I have tried factory reset, flashed two different custom ROMs based on two different firmwares, pulled battery many times, etc etc, to no avail.
the phone starts charging from wall charger, but after a few minutes, charging stops. I have used the original Samsung charger, my old HTC charger, with a combination of many different USB cables and the result is always the same. The USB port appears to be undamaged
ny suggestion to fix the problem?
Android 4.0.4
I9300BWLH1
Kernel SIYAH S3 V1.5.2
Well from what i can see the problem doesnt lie in the data cable. So maybe it the wall plug section. Or maybe the the socket itself maybe be faulty.
Problem doesnt seem to be in the phone itself so nothing to worrry about too much.
Maybe buy a travel charger to see if that helps.
Also high recommended that you do check the plug socket to see if anything else charges in there.
Might be worth charging in a different plug socket.
Hope this helps

the data cable IS OK !!
How about the plug socket. Have you tried to plug something else into the same plus socket to make that it still charges for example plugging your laptop into that same plug socket that your phone was to see if the laptop charges.

the result is the same.

Well I thought my phone was broke last week...
It wouldn't charge so I tried my old HTC charger and that wouldn't charge it either but it would via usb to laptop. So I purchased a new wire and that worked, I then tested my HTC charger on my HTC Desire HD and that still worked.
So the SGS3 doesn't seem to charge using a HTC cable unless connected to a computer. Try purchasing a new genuine usb cable
Alternatively, you could wipe battery stats in CWM (in advanced menu) and see if that fixes it

I had the same trouble, only 3 weeks after I bought my SGS3.
I did go to Samsung repair center, and they change the motherboard (under warranty).
2 Month before, same trouble with my SGS2, unfortunatly no warranty.
Samsung ask me for (around) 300$ for motherboard, and I did not do.
I've removed batterie and charge with external battery charger .... and forget it a while.
When I try it later, it was working fine ! What was my surprise !
I can charge it again with charger.... two days after "same player shoot again" : impossible to charge ... then work again :silly: !
I'm having this issue too. There is a whole thread of people having charging issues, and I assumed my problem was the same, however upon further inspection it charges via PC USB cable. That said, this may be the issue with the others in that thread.
My phone definitely seemed to charge by powerpoint when I first got it, but has since stopped.
Charging by PC is a pain, as I use my phone as an alarm, and my PC is in another room.
edit: the lightning icon comes up when I plug it into the wall charger, it just gets no charge. Is this the same as everyone else?

[Q] My S4 isn't charging correctly.

For some reason, my battery only wants to charge when it's plugged into my computer. If I plug it into the wall, the battery page displays that it's being charged by USB and not by the AC Adapter that came with it. Plus it charges very slowly, even slower than my computer. When I plug it into my car charger, it doesn't charge at all.
Does anyone else have this problem? I'm gonna charge it for a while and try flashing a new ROM, it started happening since I got on a certain nightly update.

I"m having this problem. Read on another forum that several people were experiencing problems with charging. One guy opened up the phone and noticed that a few pins to the usb port on the phone appeared to be burned/corroded. I went to Verizon today and ordered a replacement. I'm not thrilled about the idea of getting a refurbished phone and may just use the purchase protection from my credit card to get a new one. Not sure if it's something that's been fixed or not or if I'll have the same problem with the replacement phone.... keeping my fingers crossed.
Are you still having the problem?

[Q] Phone vibrating and not turning on

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 which is 3 months old. I was able to fully charge my phone last night as usual with no problems.
However, earlier today I was trying to transfer files from my phone to my laptop using the USB cable, and it came up with a message saying that the USB is not recognized and/or malfunctioning. This was weird because this is the same cable I've been using for months with no problems.
Later, my phone was running low on battery and I tried charging it, but I got the following message:
"The connected charger is incompatible with this phone. To prevent damage to your phone, charging has been stopped. To continue charging, use the original charger and cable that were provided with the phone."
Again, same charger that I've been using for months. My phone is now dead and if I try to turn it on the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo flashes once before the screen goes blank. Also, if I try to charge my phone either with USB or with a wall socket, my phone doesn't seem to be charging but instead vibrates once every three seconds. I have tried my friends' chargers and I have the same vibrating problem. Does anyone have any advice?
Do you know anyone else with an s4? Make sure you can turn your phone on with their charged battery. Sounds like the USB port on your phone got something in it or got damaged somehow. Apparently the USB assembly is pretty easy to replace if it is damage, but no guarantees on that being the issue. As a temporary solution you can get an aftermarket battery and external charger. Anker is cheap and reliable

Very weird problems with charging

Hi,
my Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300) recently started to be very hard to get it even to charge a little...sometimes I was forced to charge the battery manually by taping +5V and GND cables to the battery because the phone would just refuse to charge.
I suspected that the micro USB socket in phone is corrupted, because I've sometimes tried 6 different USB cables and none of them even worked for a few seconds. Then after struggling with it, it SOMETIMES started working.
I've also tried 5 different chargers (original 1A HTC Charger, 2A Samsung charger, 1A iPhone chargers, some different 2A charger i just bought because i thought it may finally start working)
And so yeah, I've bought a new charger with new usb cable with 2A at output, hoping it will work. But guess what? It didn't even charge the phone for a seconds, it charges other phones, my old HTC phone, my sisters Galaxy S4, but not my S3...it is not the cables fault (im 100% sure) because i have it connected and charging to my old HTC charger (1A at output) and i just plug the cable to the new 2A Charger and it is not working anymore...
The weirdest thing is that most of these chargers (Except the new one) were all working with the phone, but stopped after some time, like my old charger stopped working so I tried another one - it was working, but after trying it again or few times later it just stopped...
Any ideas? The battery is holding power long enough I think, so I dont think it is corrupted, what else could cause this?
Edit
Suddenly, after my phone dropped down to 7% and I had problems with connecting it to the original HTC charger (1A at output) i tried the new 2A charger which never worked with this phone, and BAM, it is working now and charging very well.
However, what started happening now is that when im charging the phone (through USB cable) it keeps spamming "Docking station connected" and going into docking mode, which is very annoying. I guess there is some problem with the socket? :/

I can see your assumption, but have you ever tried another battery ? Just for checking, to make sure...
