Where would the latest how-to for unlocking and rooting this phone be? I've tried to look but i have no clue if i'm looking at the latest/easiest method for doing this? Some of the threads talk about using a wire to short circuit the phone , that just seems crazy to me...
thanks for pointing me in the right direction
I have a guide for rooting and getting S-OFF here. And yes, you will have to do the wire trick but it's not really that hard.

Hey guys, I have a thunderbolt and would like to learn how to root, flash, all that good stuff.
Problem is, I don't know much about this stuff. I looked around, but couldn't find a link or a thread that was like an educational tool. If anyone knows where it is, it'd be much appreciated. Or if someone could let me know the basics, that's be good to.
I know I have to root the phone first, but I'm not sure how to save my contacts and past information(old texts). Also, I'll be rooting from a macbook.
Thanks in advance.
Why hello there Ryan!
There are several methods available to you, as well as several guides, most of which can be found here
In particular, you'll find a great guide to rooting on Mac osx here
GL and HF! And make sure you read ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS before you start. Links may die, and if you're 1/2 way through rooting it won't be good

+1, that's the stuff just remember to post any questions you may have in the Q&A section and not the development one! Happy hacking!

Welcome,
For rooting I used the "[ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011" method by jcase. Once I got ADB set up on Windows it could not have been easier. Just take your time, follow the directions to a tee, and all should be well.
Since rooting I have spent a lot of time trolling these forums, using the search function ;- ) to find the information that I need, and more or less hacking on my Thunderbolt the my great delight and my wife's displeasure.
Have fun and enjoy.
HI all,
I've read a few sets of instructions on here of how to gain permanent root on my HTC Flyer, however...being quite a simplistic fellow i don't seem to be able to follow them....if anyone fancies writing an idiot proof guide in quite easy terms that would be much appreciated...but then again if you don't i understand.
Cheers,
Marc
Sorry for the rookie question but is it possible to root the prime without losing any of the data?
Thanks ahead of time.
Absolutely, you will lose nothing by rooting with the current methods

Thanks. I will start right away.
Just make sure you follow ViperBOY's instructions to the T.
Good Luck and dont hesitate to ask us questions if you get stuck..!
(My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..)
Quick question. Im having a hard time installing the drivers. I followed the video by ViperBoy and read the instructions under. The ASUS....ADB Interface doesnt have the (!) mark.
I updated my firmware today. Does that prevent me from rooting?

I researched and found that it does prevent me from rooting. Thanks for the help guys.
Hello,
I have a Motorolla Atrix 4G purchased from Bell. The phone was updated to Gingerbread 2.3.6 already.
I have rooted the phone following this guide http://androidadvices.com/root-motorola-atrix-4g-45141-gingerbread-236-firmware/
Using the moto-fastboot files from here http://www.android-advice.com/file-downloads.php?filename=Atrix_Root_Files
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader so I can ultimately install CM7, but my understanding from this forum sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160408 is that I can't do this without bricking the phone, since I had already done the official gingerbread update.
So if I'm correct, I need to follow this guide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
Except that guide and the warning sticky are referring to 2.3.4, not 2.3.6...
Could someone please lend me some knowledgeable input and/or guidance on this? Greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time.
Solved my own question. Phone is unlocked and functioning.
To anyone else who might be helped by this, that guide I posted DOES work for 2.3.6 on Bell... Even says so approx. 13 pages into the discussion (took me awhile to find it).
Just like to thank this community for existing, and all the effort and time you guys spend to not only develop, but to help others by publishing these great resources.
I have searched and searched and for some reason it seems like im the only one that wants to do this? Had my phone flashed to pageplus using beigephone. Im somewhat computer savvy but never delved into the phones, and am not familiar with linux. From other guides ive read it seems that i could do this but i have questions. One: is there anything specific to rooting an already flashed phone that i need to take note of? Specifically pageplus? Two: what is the most comprehensive step by step guide to rooting a verizon htc dna? Anxiously seeking suggestions from those more knowledgable than I. Three: is it necessary upon rooting to run custom roms? Or will the stock one still function as it did but with greater access? Will the fact that it has already been flashed necessitate me to do one or the other? Will i have to re flash the phone? I thank everyone ahead of time for your time and expertise on the matter.
