You don't need to be running stock ICS to flash CM 9.1 .But you have to do a full wipe before flashing CM 9.1. And yes you definitely have to flash the kernel of CM 9.1.

All you need is a custom recovery to flash whatever version of Android that's available for your phone. You don't need to be running a stock version prior to it. And you need to flash the CM9.1 kernel before flashing the ROM. Kernels get flashed along with the ROM usually, but some phones need the kernel to be flashed separately due to partially unlockable bootloaders. When the bootloader is fully unlocked, the boot.img can be flashed to the /boot partition in recovery itself. But for phones with only partially unlockable bootloaders, the boot.img has to be flashed separately using a computer.

Thanx for the reply..... I have an u locked boot loader but i guess in Xperia devices kernel cant be flashed with Cwm recovery.......

[Q] Updating to a Jelly Bean Custom Rom

Hi there!
I am wanting to update my Samsung Galaxy GT-i9300 but am worried about the process because of having installed a custom kernel previously (would this muck up installing a new custom rom I wonder..)
Please find attached a screenshot of the settings and please tell me what I should do (if anything needs done) before I flash a new custom rom.
Cheers!
if you're worried about kernels, then just flash stock kernel then flash a custom rom on it.

kk, could you provide me with a suitable stock kernel (or links to one) which will be compatible with the rom I have installed?
any stock kernel that is for jb will be fine.

I am on android version 4.0.4 (so technically not JellyBean). and its safe to flash a stock kernel for JB despite being on that version before I flash a custom rom?
Sorry for asking, get confused easily..
you should be fine updating with a custom kernel (as all roms flash a kernel as well). Just make sure you factory reset when moving from ics to JB as you will most likely encounter problems if you don't.

I would suggest flashing ICS stock kernel first if you're worried. I thought you were already on jb.

Easy
Reflash the stock ics ROM
And flash any custom ROM you want
Enjoy

Error status code 7 when flashing ROMs usually means the install script failed an assert when trying to determine if you have the correct model of phone that the ROM is intended for.
Where did you download the copy of CM10.1 from? Are you sure that it is for your model of phone? According to your signature, you have an I9100. Are you sure you didn't download CM10.1 for I9100G, for example?

This is because your likley using Philz kernel for leaked JB.
To flash other custom roms you will need to change kernel back to a previous ICS or JB kernel like Siyah.
Flash the kernel (.tar version) via ODIN/Mobile ODIN.

Thx, I didn't know this about Philz... Mainly because I'm avoiding JB until Samsung releases an official version.

But I'm not using philz kernel, I never flashed it..
I just flashed this leaked firmware few days back.. That's it!!
Anyways, but most of them say to not use siyah kernel with cm 10.1... Rather use dorminax kernel with it, what you say about it?

Hey
Flash dorimanax but don't boot and then flash cm10.1

Have u wipe data and cache? If not, Boot into recovery and Marke the wipes. than restart again.

Brother, you flashed a jelly bean kernel so you can just run CyanogenMod10 based roms(android 4.1.2 roms)
If you're going to flash a gingerbread rom(CyanogenMod7) (android 2,3) you must use a gingerbread kernel like : "nAa 14 gingerbread for x10mini"
Good Luck

[HELP]

Friend i need to know can all rom b flash without flashtool
Sent from my ST25i using xda app-developers app
If you're trying to flash a stock ROM, then you'll need flashtool. That's the only way. But, if you have CWM installed, then you could download ROMs like No Sh*t or Terrarom which is stock based but standalone [doesn't require install of stock ROM].
You can then install CM9 by flashing the kernel through fastboot and then installing it over NS or Terrarom.

How to get back to stock based rom from cm10.2?

I'm in cm10.2 and now I want to flash stock based ics rom.
My question is should I only flash ics stock based kernel directly and then rom
or
flash ics original stock rom first which is ftf formet and then flash stock based rom?

Normally it's not necessary to flash the stock ftf first, so you can just install the kernel and rom you like
