Here it is people, as promised, MarketPlaceRegionSwitch. What does it do? It allows you to switch MarketPlace to USA, Germany, France, Netherlands, etc. Whatever you want - without mucking with regional settings, soft-resetting, etc. "because I can"
I DEMAND you read the entire post before using it, because there are definitely things you should know before using it.
This app actually fools Marketplace into thinking you are from somewhere else. This method is not foolproof, and may be circumvented by Microsoft in the near future. It is not for the faint of heart either.
Why?
Because developers have been left in the cold for manually verifying their apps are in the correct markets. Microsoft have dropped the ball a few times with "published" apps seemingly not being published at all, or incorrectly. While I'm sure Microsoft will fix these issues in due time (and indeed provide the functionality this program offers) for now developers need to check this for themselves. So no, this app is not meant for end-users, but for developers. If you still want to use it, that's fine by me, but it's on your own conscience
Keep in mind this is a developer tool, for verification of Marketplace presence. I would strongly advise against using this to download apps from market regions that are not your own, and especially not buying them through this app. In fact it is likely the Marketplace will not allow you to purchase from another country than your CC's billing address in either case.
How to use
Now here come the important bits. When you start the application, you will see two text boxes in front of you. MCC (mobile country code), and Lang (language ID). By default they have settings for the USA entered.
You will want to fill these values with the correct values for the market you want to visit. You should have matching country codes and language ID's, but see the note below about that. In 1.1 I have also added a select box with presets that mostly work.
Now, how to find the values you need to enter here:
MCC Go to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Country_Code. You want to enter the numeric, 3-digit code.
Lang Go to this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964664.aspx. You want the values from the LCID hex column.
Hit go, wait a few seconds, and you should be in the market of your choice.
Please note that unlike the other region switching tricks, this one is supposed to work through your CELLULAR connection specifically! Please make sure you do NOT have USB/ActiveSync or Wi-Fi connected!
Notes about the "preset" selection box
While many of these presets work, I have noticed some strange behavior. Often the 'expected' codes do not work if a region is combined with a language, but that language is not from that region.
Take for example, Luxembourg. The preset uses the correct LangID and MCC for French/Luxembourg, but it usually wont work. If you keep the Lang from French/Luxembourg but use the code for France in the MCC box, it usually will work and you will end up in the Marketplace for Luxembourg, not the one for France. You will have to play with it if you want to test for these less common markets. If you have specific notes about which codes work for which specific Markets, please do post them here.
If you are having trouble connecting to the USA marketplace, try using 311, 312, 313 or 314 instead of 310 in the MCC box.
How it was done
The entire thing is done by runtime patching. Functions used to figure out which locale you are in are patched by the app, returning the value you entered in Lang. Accompanied with that, the IMSI is patched and the MCC part is replaced by the value you entered in MCC. This all is a lot more complicated than it sounds
Obviously the app does it's best to restore original behaviour on exit, though I would still advise soft-resetting when you're done with it.
Random notes
The UI sucks, deal with it. I spent less than 5 minutes on it. I did spend many hours on the actual functionality, though.
The app should remain running while running Marketplace! It will (should) automatically exit once you exit Marketplace. Be sure to use the menu->exit function, instead of the X (the latter will usually just hide Marketplace, not close it).
The method used to patch may cause issues that will not disappear until you soft-reset, chances are slim but things can go wrong.
Changelog
29.10.2009 - v1.1
Presets added
Having to restart Marketplace twice without this app to get back to your "home" market should be fixed
If you are a developer for Marketplace and you make use of this app, it would be much appreciated if you would DONATE to me for my time (the link to donate is at the bottom of my signature)

Now to find me some US applications!
Figures, trying to add presets to this, and just as I want to start testing the whole data network craps out... *taps foot and waits for T-Mobile to fix things*

Kudos, Chainfire.
1.1 released... most importantly it adds presets. Not all of them work right, see the notes.
Also, some mod please add an empty post at the top please (I always forget to do that, hah!)
sweeeeet.. going to try it straight away
Update : Cold beer coming your way
Great work, wish I had a data plan...

Hi,
Great tool, but it doesn't work for me. After hitting the go button the app closes completely down.
Chainfire, you are a god!
I have to say, a great app, but it doesn't work for me.
I applied the standard settings (being the US one) but after this when I start Windows Marketplace I still get the dutch one.
I have Wi-Fi turned off, so what am I doing wrong? (I have the Marketplace version where you can select the location to save your app)
For those of you it doesn't work for, I'm not sure what the cause of this is. I actually had the same problem on one of my phones, it wouldn't switch away from Dutch (my "home" marketplace), and then suddenly it did - and I have been unable to reproduce the problem since.
All I can say is try uninstalling Marketplace, deleting HKCU\Security\Software\Microsoft\Marketplace, soft-reset, reinstall Marketplace. That might do the trick - or it might not.

Congrats on your thread at Tweakers.net
Also, it seems to work more reliable if you make sure you have a cellular connection before you run the app.. Also make sure you are NOT signed in with your LiveID
Thanks for this great app, it works flawlessly.
I have already tried to buy a product but it did not accept my credit card information at the last step. May be there could be a work around for this also.
Regards,

Hi Chainfire,
My device is a HTC Tytn II with the following ROM Kaiser_HyperDragon_IV_Mega_6.5_WWE.
I already had Marketplace installed so I will try the thing you suggested by uninstalling and reinstalling Marketplace. I let you know if this works.
I found the page for the PayPal app on the Windows Phone website because it doesn't show up in the store on my phone. After doing some Googling, I found that PayPal has been updated to support WP8. However, when I click Install on the page and log into my Windows Live account, it says :
Code:
Can't get app
You can't download this item because it is either unavailable or blocked by your My Family settings. You or a parent can change the settings in My Family to see if that solves the problem.
Then, when I go back to the app page while I'm logged in, it says "This app is no longer published" where the Install button should be.
I just got my Lumia today, so I have little experience with it after coming from Android. Is this because the Lumia 920 doesn't support the PayPal app yet?
Edit: Judging from the reviews, it seems that they would have pulled the app for bugfixes because it was crashing, but they obviously haven't because there's still constant reviews being posted.
I was able to install PayPal 3-4 days ago when unboxing my Lumia 920. Yesterday I reset the default settings and today PayPal is visible from the "App highlights" on the Lumia. I however get the same error when selecting the app.
When I go to store on the phone, the PayPal app can't be found. I have tried switching my phone to both Finnish and US regional settings as it seems all apps aren't available on all regions.
Edit: The marketplace/store on the Finnish region says "this app is no longer published". So all we can do is wait I guess...
Edit's edit: then again the whole marketplace is 500 - ISE at the moment so this well describes how good the app base and functionality on the WPs is. I have never had this many problems in the first 4 days of using a new phone as I have with the WP8.
I haven't really had many problems at all. The app situation is somewhat dismal, but it appears to be picking up steam. The rest of the phone is so good though, it far outweighs the boringness of android, and the force close issues I had on my nexus.

Don't get me wrong; I agree completely. Using my phone from a business only point of view. Windows Phone 8 is so much smoother than Android despite the bugs it and the apps currently have.

So I wanted to get feedback from everyone...since wp8's Bing search was updated they got rid of the local tab and shopping tab condensing search results into web, images, and video....i used to use the search setting on the local tab to get local phone numbers and address which I could easily click and open Nokia maps or drive...with the new update the local search results are supposed to show up in the web search tab...ie. I want to go to McDonalds I search mcdonalds and the web tab should have nearby address and phone numbers...but I am not being able to use the search function like this....my question is does anyone know how to search to get local results
Update- Thank you for community responses. I ended up changing the browser/search language to UK English bringing back the local tab. With further research I noticed that Microsoft is starting with the US for the new condensed tabs with WP8 Bing Search. In the future, MS will have all regions using the updated WP8 search having the same three tabs Web, images, and video. Personally I think this is stupid unless they can get local results to show up as they originally did. I suspect they are trying to avoid litigation from Apple since Apple sued Google for local search issues...just speculation though.
Update 2- I have turned back to the new updated tabs since MS has finally integrated Local results in the web tab. Actually it works pretty great with less steps and swipe to get you where you are going or to reach who you need to call.
I updated to amber. Still got local and shopping in bing search

I've loaded the Amber ATT Dev ROM, and all of the new Nokia App Amber updates and I still have Web, Local, Media Shopping. I know Bing is very Region dependent, check to make sure Phone language, Country, and Regional Format are all correct. In the Amber update there is, which I'm pretty sure is a new option, labeled "Browser & Seach Langue" that you may need to update.

Still old search on my Lumia 920 as well.
Hey guys
So today I decided to give the Windows phone a shot. Been an avid Android user and follower since it started But decided that I should really give the other operating systems a shot. I just went and got myself a Lumia 925 and if I'm correct that phone is T-Mobile's variant of the 920 correct? I didn't see a thread for the 925 so I think this is where I belong. So with that here are a few questions I have before I dive into my brand new 925.
Just briefly looking through the forum here, I noticed some ROM's here. Are these different versions of the WP software or are these developers personal tweaks to it? I know with Android depending on what phone you have, you can root it and install the latest version of Android on it, currently 4.3, even if your phone prior is only at 4.1.2.
My other question is what apps does everyone here recommend on getting. I know the app market here is really lacking and its a total shame about that. I am pretty integrated into the whole google network (Gmail, Drive, Music, G+, etc). I use some social media apps but those are't too important to me. Suggestions for other apps would be amazing.
Really looking forward in giving this a test drive and in advance thanks for all of your help! :highfive:
no major differences in many variants of same versions... just every operator have own branded versions of firmware.. no way to root or unlock phone (not talk about SIM unlock)
phone market have enough good applications...
but Google and Microsoft have "cold" war and dont except major Google apps on WP platform
Nokia have own alternative for maps, HERE bunch of apps (Maps, Drive, Transit and City Lens) and very good Nokia Music service...
first at all install SysApp Pusher to easy access to Nokia apps and system apps updates
also check for Store Deals and myFreeApp to get notifications about promotional period of pay apps to get it for free
for Instagram use 6Tag
also check guides on http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8
for offline navigation you can use Nokia Drive+ or pay for Navigon USA, Garmin StreetPilot or CoPilot GPS (if you have legal licences you can use it on CoPilot without purchase new)
GetThemAll to download stuff from websites (videos, etc.)
Stop the Music! for stopping (kill) media player (or free alternative from market, just use search)

Awesome, thanks for all the info will definitely check out all the apps you suggested. Ya I know Google and Microsoft aren't on the best of terms as of right now which only really hurts the users in the long run. Thanks again for your speedy reply!

925 is enhanced version of 920 regarding camera, but without wireless charging integrated and also slimmer due this fact
Don't try 920 ROMs on 925 and vise verse..you will brick your phone.
Don't switch. Android might be slower but it has so much more to offer. There is no free video player on the Windows 8 phone. Nothing that can play MKV for free. There is no built in flash support so sites on the web that still use flash don't work. That is an issue with all mobile devices now though. You can't block unwanted calls. There is no app that allows you to do that as there is no app that is allowed access to the kernel thanks to MS protection Nazi's. As soon as my contract ends next year I am going back to G4. This phone is just locked down too tight.

Actually in the amber update that is now a built in ability to block both calls and text from specific numbers, though you have always had the ability to save a number and set a blank ringtone for it.
Most of the videos I play are either podcast or streamed via PlexApp both of which work great, and if not, you can always convert them using Zune, granted it is a bit of work.

That's what it makes it so fun fiddling with it!
dont forget about the wifi calling that t-mobile has.. while the other ROMs do not has it.
Since the Amber Update Gmail works fine, as does Google Calendar, both in the Native WP apps.
Get Metrotalk for Google Voice. It takes a few moments to configure but once you do it works as well as Google Voie for IOS including the ability to call from the App.
I too just switched from Android and I'm still on the fence. Most of the Apps I use are here but the are some near dealbreakers like Sirius/XM and my IP Camera app that are not present and probably never will be.
On the other hand, there are a lot of nice included features like SkyDrive and Nokia Pro Cam. Unfortunately, the choice is not clear cut. You have to figure out whats important to you.
I myself was hell bent on being a one device guy. Had the Galaxy Note and Note 2 so I'd have EVERYTHING all at once. Now with the Lumias (especially the 1020) getting such great cameras I may stick with Windows Phone. I do still have an Android Tablet though to get me by.
Then again, Sony's stuff at IFA like the Z1 or the QX cameras are so intruiging. Though, the Lenses won't work with Wndows Phone, or any phone bigger than 5 inches.
So, once again, I'm left scratching my head. Do I go back to the best all around device like the Galaxy Note 3? Or do I stick with the best camera? Or do I compromise, get a middling Android Phone like the S3 or Optimus G so I can slap one of the Sony QX lenses on it? So many decisions!
Hi,
I want to try the app on my nokia lumia 520, my phone is dev unlocked, but i can't find the Nokia Beamer xap. Can anyone help me?
Thank you,
Medve
Nokia Photo Beamer is on Nokia market.
Nokia Photo Beamer: http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-pl/store/app/photobeamer/971c41e5-3596-4a7a-ba2c-bcd7780d7db5
Nokia Beamer: http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-pl/store/app/nokia-beamer/b5511af6-cbd0-4945-9bf6-30cf0582043f
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Nokia Beamer only works on devices with 1 GB of RAM or higher. Those devices get Nokia Beamer automatically with the Lumia Black update or, in the case of newer devices with Lumia Black, ship with it installed by default.
Thanks,
Yes, you know correctly, but i want to try It, but the Lumia 520's got only 512mb RAM. I heard if i Dev. Unlock my Phone, I can install aps, wich need more Power. I downloaded the XAP from the Marketplace, but it's encrypted, and the SDK app deployment won't deploy to my Phone. So I need the decrypted XAP, or maybe an another method. Can anyone upload the decrypted XAP( if you downloaded the Nokia Beamer from the Marketplace, It Will be on your Phone.) or write an another method?
OR any alternative instead?
Thank you,
Medve

Dev unlock only allows you to sideload apps that use tier 3 capabilities (which is the same as most of the apps published in the store), so you gain nothing in terms of "power", just the ability to sideload homemade apps.

We can't just pull decrypted XAPs from our phones... You need interop unlock for that (and possibly more), and so far that's only achieved on Samsung phones. Your best chance is to get someone with an unlocked Samsung device to install Beamer by using the proxy trick, then posting the XAP so you can sideload. But be aware this can potentially create new issues - it's an OEM app, so it probably uses capabilities not covered by dev unlock (which means you won't be able to sideload).
Or you can just try the proxy trick yourself. Change the device model to something with 1GB and it should be available for download.

Do a google search on how to trick the store into thinking you own a different device than you actually do. The tutorial may even be on this forum, so have a look around...
Quite possible that it still checks for the RAM requirement when it's launched, even if you manage to install it.
Even when people run games like Temple Run 2 on 512 MB RAM devices, sideloaded, the XAP needs to be modified and have that check removed, or they will not launch, as far as I know. No idea on how this is done or even how the people who do this get their hands on decrypted XAPs, though.

You can use fiddler to set up your own computer as a proxy...
IIRC the store doesn't specifically check for the amount of RAM the device has, only model, firmware and OS version, etc. and then makes conclusions based on that. So if you tell the store you have, say a 1520 instead of the 520, the store will assume your phone has 2 GB of RAM.
