[Q] Charging slow on Jelly Bean - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have been searching but I can't find any 'good' thread with information about my issue. Well, my issue is that I experience VERY slow charging on my Galaxy S3 since I updated to Jelly Bean. Sometimes it is really fast, like it was always but it became alot slower compared to ICS. I have checked everything and it's no hardware issue or something like that. When I install a new Jelly Bean rom my first charge goes fast like it should. But then the next charge it goes slow. Like 2% each 15 minutes. First this was on ICS about 1% each 1 minute .20 seconds... Anybody got an idea?
Could it be an app causing this issue? If yes, is there any possibility to know what app it is instead install every app separate en checking this..
Thanks in advance!
(Btw if you're experiencing the same, tell me!)

Change your USB cable

Installed now the Android Revolution HD ROM it it seems to charge faster now... Alot faster... I'm hoping it's fixed with this ROM!

What kernel u choose?
Stock kernel or Perseus custom kernel in AROMA installer ?

Running android 4.1.2 jelly bean rom Android Revolution HD. My battery is again charging slow. So slow that I plugged it in about 1 hour and 15 minutes ago and that it decreased from 30 tot 32 with usage. Lol. any solution?
Kernel info:
3.0.36-Perseus-alpha27 blablabla...

You could try if Siyah Kernel solves the issue.
What are you using to charge the device? Make sure it shows as "AC" in the Battery-screen since otherwise it will be capped at 0.5Amp instead of 1Amp

I have the same problem but when I use SGS2 Charger I found that the devise is charging with normal condition like before and takes around 2:30 to 100%

You have the same scenario with me
I also had this problem when i first updated my phone to Jelly Bean and found that charging becomes very slow
So i tried SGS II charger like you did and it worked fine
what i did was I changed my USB cable (with 5 pins)
In some forums, you may find that the USB cable with only 4 pins are no standard for SGS III
after reading those forums, i rechecked my old USB cable and found that it has only 4 pins

its not anything with jelly bean change your usb sync cable to something else like of nokia's or a good quality one . I have experienced this issue

I agree. Change your cable and that will solve your problem. I had the same problem as you, changed my cable for a new one and my problem was fixed. No more discharging while charging for me.

With ICS I used stock usb cable with 3 meter usb extension cable and it charged fast (about 3 hours from 1-100%). Same without extension. With Jelly if I use same 3 meter usb extension cable then it charges about 7-8 hours. Without extension it charges about 3 hours. Original ROM's both.
So I think it IS related somehow with JB vs ICS. Otherwise both should act same way with extension and without extension.

Well I used my same usb cable and charger thing where you put the usb cable in and it charged slower. Well I'll try find other usb cable on internet of good quality. But since yesterday phone charges a alot faster. But stil long. really long. On ICS this wasnt the case. But I have to order another usb cable cuase stock one is way to short. Ill report guys!

Disabled NFC and GPS rebooted phone and it charges incredibly fast somehow.

Aarrghhhh cant find a solution!

Have you tried the first solution posted above, changing cables. Try it. I too had that problem. Sometimes it charge fast other times slow. Bought samsung original cable from samsung retailer and all is okay.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

i try to use another cable for my phone and look how its going..

Somehow it charges fast again after removing data of kik, rebooting, installing, rebooting and full charge.

[Q] Galaxy S3 charging problems after installing official Jelly Bean

hello all
i have a very peculiar problem with my s3. I have been using official unbranded poland rom (I9300XXBLH1), flashed it over the rom that came stock on it, since i got the device without any problems. when 4.1.1 offical came out and it was for poland i went on sammobile, grabed the rom, flashed and at first all seemed fine until i tried to charge the phone.
first the phone didn't charge at all then it charged some but i noticed that red led does not shine as birght when the phone doesnt charge, it goes dim. the cable and charger are fine, tested with other combos and on other phones all works fine. the phone also charges fine when its turned off.
now the peculiar part... once i rooted, wiped everything from recovery and reverted back to poland 4.0.4 all charging issues disappear. wiping everything again then installing 4.1.1 reintroduces the charging problem, this was my first thought - bad flash, but it wasn't.
why does my s3 respond this way to jelly bean, have others had similar problems? any info apriciated
I got the same problem
I got this same problem in my S3. Now my S3 have a crazy behaves related charging and its begin to happen about the second day that I did update. And I did the official update that popped up in my screen.
So any one could help us to figure out what going on?
Thanks in advance!

guys try few things
1. use only genuine usb cable / charger
2. use genuine usb cable + iphone wall charger - it may sound crazy but for me it made the difference.
3. use other cable
i was facing similar problem, it went off by charging with charger that i had at home from SGS1. i a mable to charge it again.
they are few topics around about bad quality USB pin on phone, or even battery, or low charger quality.
if nothing would work you have to contact the shop/carrier and claim repair/refund/exchange

I have installed lots it ICS roms but this never happened....i am sure its some software problem cuz everyone seems to get this after the jelly bean update.
And charing from 0% to 100 % took me around 8 hours
Anyone else facing this problem?

well, i have already stated in original post that i have tried different cable/charger combo and that every single cable and charger i tried works just fine on other phones i have around the house. heck, all of them work fine on s3 too when on ics but not if jelly bean is installed. so it aint the chargers, its the software in the phone.
also those threads were started some months ago, the issue here is different, charging problems did not come "out of the blue", they come and go with jelly bean installation, that's the weirdest part.
I think this is connected with Fast Dormancy.
First time when I flashed Omega 27 (Jelly Bean) I got same problem.
Than I turn off Fast Dormancy and this problem turned off too

this is what fast dormancy is and how to disable it, i have no idea how a network feature would be connected to a charging problem... i would understand if it was battery drain problem...
im going to flash 4.1.1 again, discharge the battery then charge it while the phone is off... see if that helps

I'm also having this problem. As an added twist, my phone is plugged into a Viewsonic GTablet at night. It worked fine under ICS, under JB it only charges around 70-75%. Better Battery Stats says "usb cb wake lock" and "usb device wake lock" were both active the entire time with 69.5% while the phone was charging. "secril_fd-interface" (FD) had 1.6%, so I don't think that is my issue. I will try again tonight with a normal charger and see if it makes a difference. I have the red charging light and other notifications disabled at night, my wife and I both have GSIII's and it looked like a disco the first night before we turned those off
Just thought I would throw that out there.
Temp solution for charging problem...
Hi all,
I too face the same problem. But it is not the fault with Cable or charger but with JB ROM Only. Someone in this post said that charging took 8 long hours from 0-100%. This is because your phone thinks that it is charging from a USB power source rather than AC power source. This can be verified from the battery screen in settings menu. This is a problem with JB kernel which needs to be addressed.
But as a workaround, just unplug the charger from the phone and again plug it back.T S3 will consider that it is charging now from a powersource (will be shown as AC in the Battery screen under setting menu). If it doesnt come the first time, try repeating for a couple more times (try unplugging from the charger end rather from the phone end)... this will resolve temporarily this charging issue, till the kernel permanent fix comes out....
Just came to share my agony..my cell has been on wall charger since 24 hrs and is still just 80%.
So as u guys said,I am staying optimist and waitin for some sort of kernel fix.
Any updates on this issue?
BTW I'm on Wanam 3.7 with siyah 1.6RC3
Need help to get my phone functional again
Today I plugged my s3 into HP envy17's USB(one that specifically says charging port)
Now it my cell is charging at rate of around ~14%/hr which previously charged at rate of around ~5%/hr only
Thought I should share,it's definitely something wrong with how JB manages the charging, possibly defective drivers...any fix any 1
Same here guys, samsung deseption u.u
ok i'm back with doing some experiments...
charging the battery to full while the phone is off then discharging it completely (doing a cycle, so to say) didn't really give any results, i even did this twice, purging batterystats from cwm also did nothing...
i just wanna clarify something... do all of you also experience the dimmed red charging light when screen is off? we should prob notify samsung through official bug report service or something...
get into recovery mode by CWM >advanced > reset battery stat > reboot
i think it ll work

[Q] Very slow charging galaxy s3

Hi,
Since 1 week now I have some huge difficulties to charge my GS3. For exemple when I plug it before going to sleep, in the morning there is only 50%. Sometimes I plug it and it stop the charge itself (not at 100%), i have to move the cable a little to continue the charge.
I tried several cable and plugs, nothing change.
Does anybody experienced this? What can I do?
Ps : I already read this post but I didn't find any answer.
Thx
I presume you charged the phone through the AC power? I had similar issue prior which was resolved once I wiped my Battery Stats. Is your phone rooted?
yes my phone is rooter I have omega V35 ROM and i already tried to wipe the battery stats and nothing changed
Im sure you have also clear cache, wipe, reflash the ROM? Its highly unlikely that all of your chargers are malfunctioning, If the phone is still within the warranty period, it may be time for you to visit Samsung Service Centre (SSC)...but unroot first!

no i didn't tried to reflash the ROM cause it was working great with this ROM before, I contacted samsung and they will repare it but i need to find the bill first. Is it really necessary to unroot the phone? Installing a stock ROM is good or is there something else to do to unroot it?

unrooting is in reference to returing to stock ROM. SSC will invalid warranties to rooted phones.
i just reflash the ROM and the phone is still very slow to charge.
I will send back to samsung i think.
i just installed the Omage ROM V38 and i still have the problem, you can look at this graph :
Take battery out for 10 minutes. Plug back in and see. If not possibly battery port issue, my wife's had to be sent back for it.

So different USB cables didn't helped? That usually does the trick. Other than that try kernel such as yank kernel which allows fast charging option.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
First flash STOCK ROM and see what's gonna happen.
If the problem still persists, send your phone for service.
Make sure there are no signs of custom ROMs and Kernels.
Solution is the CABLE
Here is a confirmation of the solution from Turkey: It IS the CABLE...
Check the cable end that goes into the S3, if you see 5 places but with only 4 wires, it charges VERY slowly... However, I used a $5 charger which had 5 wires in the end that goes into galaxy S3 and voila!

My stock Samsung cable has those 4 connections instead of, what looks like the 5 that can fit in. And it charges so slowly!
9/10 its the cable. I don't know bout what is said above. Mine charged fast then suddenly started charging slowly. It was to do with the kernels usb charger stability detection.

So if I install stock Android, will that change the kernal and therefore fix the issue?
I don't see why I should have to pay and wait for a new cable, even if it's only a few quid and a few days :/

All Samsung kernels have the detection. Whether changing the kernel or cable fixes it or not is not knowable.
all you can do is try. can you not borrow a cable to test it? Surely you know someone with a cable?
yes, mine s3 to does charge slow i have the Purelook HD rom please help, take my phone on charger from 4& next morning about 50- 60 & only charged!!
I have a similar issue here, although my problem only started with latest arhd 25.0 Rom, never had this with previous roms of arhd....some times the charge is very fast , then next time it will charge to 19% then stop, then next time it's fast then will be very slow... very intermittent, I have changed chargers. Still same results, going to try wipe the battery stats to see if that helps.

Charging problems

For like a month or 2,I have had charging problems with my gs3.Sometimes,when I plug it in the wall charger and leave it charging it would either charge really slowly or not charge at all.Usually, unplugging the charger then putting it back makes it charge properly again.I have been running jelly bean(4.1.1,4.1.2 and 4.2.1 leak) 2 weeks after getting my gs3 back in october. The usb cable is working fine because my PC detects my gs3 when I plug it in.I tried 6 different wall sockets and the problem happens in all of them + my other phones charge in them without problems.I did a couple of factory resets when I was changing between ROMs so a factory reset doesn't fix it if someone was going to suggest doing it.What could be the problem ? I hope this is not related to SDS
It is related to the fact that the OEM charging units were rubbish and unreliable, try any generic 5v charger ie S1/S2/BlackBerry, they all work for me
Have you tried to clean the micro usb port?
AW: Charging problems
You can monitor the charging state with the app "Galaxy Charging Current" which can be found for free in the S3 subforum here on XDA.
|| Typed with my S4 Octa-Beast or my Note 10.1 ||
ok I will try cleaning the port and I will use galaxy current state app but I can't post the results right away because it sometimes charges well from the 1st time.

I got a gs2 charger but not in this house,if everything failed I will go get it some time later.
Btw,I got a question. Is this a common problem with the GS3 ? or at least with the stock charger ? I just want to be sure there's nothing wrong with my GS3 and to decide whether its worth sending it to customer service(and they might tell me to keep it there for a couple of days) or not if everything failed.

THe original cable that came with the s3 was really bad. I use my brother's htc one v cable, works much better
Hi
I fixed it temporally... i don't how long.. but.. here is:
1 eject the battery
2 plug the charger
3 insert the battery
4 wait until the phone recognizes the level of battery (first appears a icon with the baterry and a flash, and next the icon with the battery level)
5 unplug your charger
6 turn on the phone.
I think that internally it has another internal batt that keeps the clock running, and keeps the battery meter alive. If this metter screws with hard customizations (like when you install a custom rom, or kernel), you just need to restart it while android is not running.

I forgot that I got an ace plus charger with me here.Been using it since I last posted in this thread and my gs3 charges flawlessly.I guess the problem was really in the charger.

Severe charging issue post rooting

Hi,
My Samsung Galaxy S3 (I9300) is just more than 1 month old. Due to the really bad multitasking abilities of the stock TouchWiz (On such an expensive phone, I couldn't browse and play music at the same time) I got really frustrated.
I rooted and flashed the ROM twice. Tried and tested two ROMs. Didn't quite like em. Came back to stock ROM.
Now I'm on stock ROM and still rooted. The charging time of my S3 was always very long and in my last charging attempt it has taken more than 9 hours to completely charge. I've done a factory restore already.
I've checked the charger through battery widgets and the charger is detected as an "AC Charger". I'm not sure if those battery calibrating software work. I don't think the charger is at fault.
I really need a fix for this charging issue. It's really sad that a brand new phone is acting like this.
Will be very thankful for all the help.

Okay, the new cable worked. However even it has shown the same problem once. The thing with my phone is it doesn't charge at the same speed every time. I can't be assured that after connecting the charger at night, I'll get a full charge in the morning. Sometimes the charger works well. Sometimes it does not.
You may have a faulty charging port or wall charger if you have already changed the cable...
Why not download the Galaxy Charging Current app and see if your SIII is charging at 1000mA using wall charger?
Galaxy Charging Current
My original samsung charge cable developed problems after 8 months (it started only charging at between 300mA to 800mA; changes after you plug in and plug out the cable to the SIII)
The wall charger is still ok as I get 1000mA again after replacing the cable with a Capdase cable.
The S3 has built in stability detection for USB charging. If it determines the connection is unstable, it restricts charge. Usually a simple cable swap resolves but as mentioned above, the port could be faulty.
If you're rooted try a kernel such as Devil or Perseus which can have stability detection ignored.

Mega 6.3 won't charge!

Guys, i have a 10 months old Galaxy Mega 6.3 and suddenly i'm not able to charge the battery.
I've tried to charge with 30%~ 40%, with my phone turned on, which i always do, everyday... And don't charge at all.
I've tried to charge it turned off, but keeps repeating that screen with the battery with a circle(and a rumble), then this repeats over and over...
Is my battery dead?

Hi..first try removing the battery from the phone for about 10 secs and put it back in and see if that will help, because the battery should still be in a charging state even if the battery was not that good as this has happened to me on other samsung phones, and if not better re-install the rom you have, but make a backup first if you can..worth a try before proceeding further.

I have the latest stock rom installed, so, i don't think it is a rom issue. Besides that, how can i re-install it if i can't turn my phone on? Now i have something 1 or 2% battery life =/
I've tried to remove the battery a couple times, 10sec, 10min... nothing seems to work. Since i have warranty, i'll have to use it, the problem here in Brazil, specially in my city, the service takes forever(3 to 4 weeks =/)

Oh okay I didn't know you could not get into the rom or past that battery icon..then most likely a port problem forsure..did you try another usb cable to just make sure.
Edit: when you have your usb cable unplugged from the phone it should still boot into your rom as the port has nothing to do with that part..what does it show on your screen when you boot the phone without the usb connected.

The battery terminals may be dirty.wipe both gold coloured contacts with a clean, soft cloth and try charging the battery again.

You can check your charger. And also check your charging port.. sometime charger also damage for this..

This happened to me last month on my 10 months old Mega. It was driving me crazy. Phone was charging just 10% / hour (as opposed to 60%). I tried charging with other chargers but result wasn't different.
After much research I came to know that my phone did not have any of the following problems
- ROM (stock 4.2.2), my phone was going into good deep sleep etc.
- Some app (I factory reset my phone to rule that out)
- My charger (I used others')
- My USB port (I always use wall charger)
The problem was with the freaking charger cable (weird right?). I took my friend's charging cable and used with original charger and my phone was back on track.
I still have to buy a new cable. Just researching to get a good one (weird again).
I found the Mega does tend to get hot sometimes where the battery is. I think it's faulty connectors. One of mine looks a bit discolored. But who knows.

Okay, so I just this moment joined the forum JUST so I could thank Member hopsin444 for this advice. Just as he guaranteed, it was the charging port. After getting his advice, I downloaded the PDF User Manual for the Galaxy Mega (my phone). I did what another member suggested and unplugged the battery for 10 minutes (just to be safe). I plugged it back in, and used the brand new charger and cable that came with my phone. I had been using a different charger, so I wanted to get a brand new clean start. Sure enough, the battery started charging immediately, good as new. I must say that in order for this method to work, you must insure that all components are in working order: battery, charger, and cable connectors. Because, otherwise, it's hard to debug exactly which little part is the culprit for the problem.
Once again, thank you ever so much hospsin444. You saved me a lot of cash, trips to the repair shop, and untold headaches.`
Update: The phone charge from 66% to 70% and then stopped charging again. I'm thinking it's the little slot -- on the phone itself -- that the charger cable plugs into that is the problem. My only option now is to take the phone to get repaired. But my thanks to hopsin still applies. It was fun while it lasted.
Similar problem. . . . grey battery issue ( can get around by using reboot command either in download mode or stock recovery ) i have 2 batteries and one still has a charge, replaced usb port ( NEW BOARD - $15 on -ebay) but no love . . . . when i power off it sits there with the grey battery icon and kills the battery. it is NOT recognized by computer and does not recognize a charger ( i have lots and they are all good wires and blocks ) ordered a wall charger and can use it but no USB at all

Your not the only one, this just happened to my Mega at the end of July and i replaced the port just the other week and still nothing. Only way it charges is if it was off...i cant charge it while its on, the battery depletes itself and on top of that i can't even use my portable battery to charge this phone. The cable has to only be a Samsung issued cable and that doesn't even make anything better. I'm just going to officially retire this phone and get me another phone
(Third Galaxy phone model.......and my LAST)
Replace USB port Had the exact same problem Phone would charge then not

I figured out two other reasons why my phone was charging poorly even when I replaced the USB port 1. The charger wire was weak (yes it is a Samsung USB wire) and needed to be replaced. I wasn't getting enough power from the outlet to the phone and it would stay at a percentage for 30 minutes or longer and 2. There was a Low Battery Dump setting that was off (similar setting like the SGS3 and SGS4)
But one thing that now gets me is why I can't use my portable battery to charge anymore? Nothing is wrong with the battery (it charges all of my other electronics with no problem)

Could I try to cover it with a towel then put it in a bag ant it in the freezer for 12 hours and take it out and let it reach room temp
I'm having the same exact problem, did you figure out what the problem was?
sometimes change the plugin charger can resolve the problem, but if you have change the plugin and still can not charge like mine maybe
using charger 0.7A can resolve the charging problem, very slow charging . OR using 2.1A charger but try and error until found the perfect one. (it works on my mega LTE)
Me too, having charging problem with my Mega 6.3 i527m. : (
I had used different chargers, cables and batteries, still the problem of not charging was unsolved.
But when the original usb cable and Samsung's proprietary 2A Traveler's charger that came with my old Samsung Tab 7.7 were used, my Mega detected it immediately and the grey battery icon flashed off and on faster than before - a good sign it was charging.
So, that means my charging port/flex is not defective.
Lesson Learned: It pays to use the original accessories that came with your device or gadget!
