[Q] Very slow charging galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Since 1 week now I have some huge difficulties to charge my GS3. For exemple when I plug it before going to sleep, in the morning there is only 50%. Sometimes I plug it and it stop the charge itself (not at 100%), i have to move the cable a little to continue the charge.
I tried several cable and plugs, nothing change.
Does anybody experienced this? What can I do?
Ps : I already read this post but I didn't find any answer.
Thx

I presume you charged the phone through the AC power? I had similar issue prior which was resolved once I wiped my Battery Stats. Is your phone rooted?

yes my phone is rooter I have omega V35 ROM and i already tried to wipe the battery stats and nothing changed

Im sure you have also clear cache, wipe, reflash the ROM? Its highly unlikely that all of your chargers are malfunctioning, If the phone is still within the warranty period, it may be time for you to visit Samsung Service Centre (SSC)...but unroot first!

same issue here
see link

my thread also

no i didn't tried to reflash the ROM cause it was working great with this ROM before, I contacted samsung and they will repare it but i need to find the bill first. Is it really necessary to unroot the phone? Installing a stock ROM is good or is there something else to do to unroot it?

unrooting is in reference to returing to stock ROM. SSC will invalid warranties to rooted phones.

i just reflash the ROM and the phone is still very slow to charge.
I will send back to samsung i think.

i just installed the Omage ROM V38 and i still have the problem, you can look at this graph :

Take battery out for 10 minutes. Plug back in and see. If not possibly battery port issue, my wife's had to be sent back for it.

So different USB cables didn't helped? That usually does the trick. Other than that try kernel such as yank kernel which allows fast charging option.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

First flash STOCK ROM and see what's gonna happen.
If the problem still persists, send your phone for service.
Make sure there are no signs of custom ROMs and Kernels.

Solution is the CABLE
Here is a confirmation of the solution from Turkey: It IS the CABLE...
Check the cable end that goes into the S3, if you see 5 places but with only 4 wires, it charges VERY slowly... However, I used a $5 charger which had 5 wires in the end that goes into galaxy S3 and voila!

Can anyone confirm this?
My stock Samsung cable has those 4 connections instead of, what looks like the 5 that can fit in. And it charges so slowly!

9/10 its the cable. I don't know bout what is said above. Mine charged fast then suddenly started charging slowly. It was to do with the kernels usb charger stability detection.
Changed cable and all good

So if I install stock Android, will that change the kernal and therefore fix the issue?
I don't see why I should have to pay and wait for a new cable, even if it's only a few quid and a few days :/

All Samsung kernels have the detection. Whether changing the kernel or cable fixes it or not is not knowable.
all you can do is try. can you not borrow a cable to test it? Surely you know someone with a cable?

yes, mine s3 to does charge slow i have the Purelook HD rom please help, take my phone on charger from 4& next morning about 50- 60 & only charged!!

I have a similar issue here, although my problem only started with latest arhd 25.0 Rom, never had this with previous roms of arhd....some times the charge is very fast , then next time it will charge to 19% then stop, then next time it's fast then will be very slow... very intermittent, I have changed chargers. Still same results, going to try wipe the battery stats to see if that helps.

[Q] Phone Reboots When USB cable plugged-in

My new AT&T Galaxy S II rebooted after USB cable connection when Android running up and in powered off state (battery charging animation is flicking - seems like reboot loops on charging state).
The interesting point is: In Downloading mode all things running as regular and i'm able re-flash the phone using usb cable.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Hmm this is a odd problem i dont recall hearing anything about this problem. You could try letting the battery sit for 10 minutes and then try again... I hope this problem gets fixed anyways you might want to call at&t or the company you got it from and look for a exchange.

Is this a third-party battery? If not, it's probably a loose battery connection.

Well you haven't exactly been around long, otherwise you'd know that this is a fairly common occurrence with third-party batteries. For example, it ALWAYS happens if you try to charge an I9100 battery (even an official one) in the I777. It's a basic safety check to prevent people from using the wrong battery in the 777.
Reboots - Stock rom problem
Hi, i bougth a new samsung S2 777, when start to reboot i try to change the USB port, nothing. Clear wipe reset, nothing...
THE SOLUTION IS THE STOCK ROM (i dont know why, 4.0.2). I install a custom ROM (cyanogemon 10.1) and sucess, it start to work again.

Have you found a solution?
Is it just your screens timing out or like your holding the power button? Are you using a wall charger or usb to a pc?

Little more description of your problem would help.
As was asked, does the screen shut off, or does it completely shut down and then show you the charging screen?
Have you checked your logs to see what your phone has to say? (and if you haven't, don't ask "How do I do that?", there's a number of threads that have discussed it. Do a simple google/xda/google play search for dmesg)

My phone does the same. When I plug in the charger ( USB cable plugged into wall unit) the screen shuts off, I hear a click inside the phone, and then the phone reboots over and over. If I plug it in with the power off, I see the battery, with the cursor for about 2 seconds, then repeated over and over.
On my phone the USB port was broken so I purchased a replacement " board", not just the connector, and put it in. Any thoughts. Thanks. Phone is fine otherwise.

What I would do is first make a Nandroid backup (I'm assuming you know how to, since you have a custom ROM) and maybe a TiBu backup as well.
Then, try going into CWM and wiping data to factory reset, wiping the cache, and wiping Dalvik cache, then reflashing the latest version of the ROM you already have installed. See if that helps. It probably isn't an issue with your ROM but then again precautions are always good to narrow down the real problem.
Good thought. Did try that and no better. Sending in for warranty. Pretty sure it is a hardware issue.

Yeah. Sounds like it would be a hardware problem. Not sure why I thought it might be something else.

I had this problem. It is due to using an aftermarket battery without Near Field Communication. The batter I have seems to be authentic Samsung, but was made for the i9100, with doesn't have this NFC chip. These aftermarket batteries have to be charged in a separate charger. You will notice the NFC batteries are slightly thicker and have "Near Field Communication" under the Samsung logo.
That could be it. I already sent it in for repair, but I did purchase 3 genuine Samsung batteries for the i9100 to use in my i777. They work fine in my i9100. Good to know. Thanks.

Samsung knows about this
I know this is an old thread, but I just called Samsung for this problem on a non custom ROM, non-rooted, S2 and the agent didn't specifically say that it is a known problem but he told me he would set up free repair without even asking when I bought it or any other purchase verification. I work for a fairly large tech retailer and in my experience this usually means that it is a known issue.
I did find it to be the batteries that i purchased. They were for the i-9100. The att version needs a device appropriate battery. They say nfc on them. I sent it in for repair and samsung said that they couldnt find anything wrong

I used to have this problem with the stock ROM using the stock battery. Hasn't been a problem since install CM 10.1.3 with either my stock or non-NFC aftermarket batt.

Have you tried wipe cache and dalvik?
I have same problem sometimes even when not plugged in. I think it might be cause of some Stweaks setting when the screen is off for a long time. Please let me know what I can change.
I have the exact same issue, I ordered this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BGM392G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it shuts off when plugged in. I flashed a custom kernel and it fixed the issue, but it happens all over when I odin to stock. Is this a HW problem with my phone, or just a bad battery? EDIT- I looked under the label and there is indeed no nfc antenna, even though the label says nfc and there are 4 contact points. I will be returning the battery and updating.
i m using redmi note 5 pro with corvus os latest and i flashed update and clean dalvic and catch
but still the problem same some time phone gt off when charger connected

Faulty usb port

Hey guys, i have a bit strange, but not unheard of issue.
When i put in the charger the phone shows the charging animation constantly. Only problem is that 40% of the time the battery percent is going down.
I have tried different kernels and roms to check if it was software-related but the result is the same.
The same thing happens when i plug the phone into the pc.
Charging animation, but its sapping power. The funny thing is that mtp works flawlesly and i can flash with odin/heimdall use adb and transfer files.
Any sugestions?
I've done some soldering in the past but im not classified as a pro just yet!
Any help/pointers are greatly appreciated.
can add the firmware details:
PDA: XWLPG
PHONE: XXLPS
CSC: HTDLP4
Kernel: siyah 4.0.1

Did you already try with another battery?
yeah, tried that too,
but, when i tried to leave the batteri out for ten minutes (read on another thread), it charged without any hassle for about one battery cycle before it went messy again.
and last week i bought a new standard samsung charger, it worked well for 4-5 cycles, then that charger too became unstable.

How long have you had the device. It's a known fault of the s2, after a while the charging port starts to fail. I've heard people who have to replace it (apparently it cheap like 10$ off ebay) and it's a relatively easy process. Or, if you're in warranty just send it in and get samsung to do it

i've had the device for 2-3 months, i bought it used so i dont know how old it is,
waiting for a reply from the man i bought it from, i've actually got a new usb port laying around here.
so if things turns really bad i have to pick up my courage or send it to a friend who has worked with soldiering.

If the USB port turns out to be broken I suggest you replace the entire flex-print (available on ebay). It is cheap and you are not required to solder anything.
thanks fxrb, i will check it out, im really not comfortable with soldiering on the mainboard in case i really mess something up,
didnt know the charger port was on a own board so this changes things dramaticly.
Thank you for enlightening me with this!

[Q] Charging slow on Jelly Bean

Hey guys,
I have been searching but I can't find any 'good' thread with information about my issue. Well, my issue is that I experience VERY slow charging on my Galaxy S3 since I updated to Jelly Bean. Sometimes it is really fast, like it was always but it became alot slower compared to ICS. I have checked everything and it's no hardware issue or something like that. When I install a new Jelly Bean rom my first charge goes fast like it should. But then the next charge it goes slow. Like 2% each 15 minutes. First this was on ICS about 1% each 1 minute .20 seconds... Anybody got an idea?
Could it be an app causing this issue? If yes, is there any possibility to know what app it is instead install every app separate en checking this..
Thanks in advance!
(Btw if you're experiencing the same, tell me!)
Change your USB cable
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Installed now the Android Revolution HD ROM it it seems to charge faster now... Alot faster... I'm hoping it's fixed with this ROM!
What kernel u choose?
Stock kernel or Perseus custom kernel in AROMA installer ?
Running android 4.1.2 jelly bean rom Android Revolution HD. My battery is again charging slow. So slow that I plugged it in about 1 hour and 15 minutes ago and that it decreased from 30 tot 32 with usage. Lol. any solution?
Kernel info:
3.0.36-Perseus-alpha27 blablabla...
You could try if Siyah Kernel solves the issue.
What are you using to charge the device? Make sure it shows as "AC" in the Battery-screen since otherwise it will be capped at 0.5Amp instead of 1Amp

You have the same scenario with me
I also had this problem when i first updated my phone to Jelly Bean and found that charging becomes very slow
So i tried SGS II charger like you did and it worked fine
what i did was I changed my USB cable (with 5 pins)
In some forums, you may find that the USB cable with only 4 pins are no standard for SGS III
after reading those forums, i rechecked my old USB cable and found that it has only 4 pins
its not anything with jelly bean change your usb sync cable to something else like of nokia's or a good quality one . I have experienced this issue
I agree. Change your cable and that will solve your problem. I had the same problem as you, changed my cable for a new one and my problem was fixed. No more discharging while charging for me.

With ICS I used stock usb cable with 3 meter usb extension cable and it charged fast (about 3 hours from 1-100%). Same without extension. With Jelly if I use same 3 meter usb extension cable then it charges about 7-8 hours. Without extension it charges about 3 hours. Original ROM's both.
So I think it IS related somehow with JB vs ICS. Otherwise both should act same way with extension and without extension.
Well I used my same usb cable and charger thing where you put the usb cable in and it charged slower. Well I'll try find other usb cable on internet of good quality. But since yesterday phone charges a alot faster. But stil long. really long. On ICS this wasnt the case. But I have to order another usb cable cuase stock one is way to short. Ill report guys!
Disabled NFC and GPS rebooted phone and it charges incredibly fast somehow.

i try to use another cable for my phone and look how its going..
Somehow it charges fast again after removing data of kik, rebooting, installing, rebooting and full charge.

Phone acting weird.

Recently ive been getting this thing that my phone wont charge on an AC charger straight away.
I have to plug it in my PCs usb cable, then plug it in AC so it will charge i have tried 3 different AC chargers , all Samsungs original ones!
It stopped doing this for a cople of weeks then started again.. ive also tried a couple of roms but the rom doesnt seem to be an issue.. Atn im running NeatROM 4.2 with the stock PhilZ kernel.
Any ideas??

Clean install of stock in the first instance to rule in/out hardware issues. If it happens with a clean install of stock as well; Clean USB port, then replace USB port/flex cable, then return to service centre as probably issue with charging/USB circuitry if the first two don't help.
Okay, ill try an Stock install when i have time.. service center is not an option since i bought it used and doesnt have an warranty anymore.. if i cant get it fix i think ill sell it and let someone else deal with the issue, lol

Might want to check battery stuff as well while you're at it; clean the contacts in the phone/on the battery, maybe try another battery depending on how keen you are. Given how long the phone has been out, original batteries should be starting to die off in their droves right about now (and earlier if you charge/discharge a lot).
