You should have searched for this, because this was asked and answered some time ago. Without a cable, rooting isn't possible.

There's always a way mate!
Detailed guide plus apps, both for phone and PC.
It's called reverse Android tethering
Also there's a stock app that can do that using usb, I think it was called something like settings

Unlock tethering finally

Ok, I know there is many threads/apps that claim to unlock tethering, but I tried every one of them and none worked. I found a blog called yawn4life that gave the only actual instructions that worked. I did this on ics stock but it should work on stock JB also. You can read it here : http://yawn4life.blogspot.com/2013/07/enable-tethering-on-at-lg-optimus-g.html?m=1 Enjoy
Tested 100% works.
Just a change. I used terminal from phone and made step by sted and works fine.

What network are you doing this on? I have tried wifi tether for root users and foxfi for at&t and I got a text saying I was tethering. I tried it a couple weeks later only for a minute to Google something on my laptop and they switched me to the 5gb plan. How can you do it so at&t does not know?

You only tether mobile devises such as a tablet if you don't want em to figure it out. Laptop / computer browsers handle data differently than tablets with mobile browsers.

Clockworkmod tether by koush claims to be able to hide tethering. It is USB tether though, and I haven't used it myself so can't confirm it works.
I used to use PDAnet and that worked for me.
Same for pdanet. Just used it a couple months ago.

[Q] WIndows 8.1 MTP won't stabalize

I have AT&T M8. Windows 8.1. When I connect phone with USB cable the MTP won't establish a secure connection so that phone shows attached to computer and I can explore files. The MTP files show as installed. I have HTC sync manager insatlled. But Media device (MTP) connected flashes non stop and computer keeps asking what to do with phone when connected. File explorer shows phone connected and then gone again in a couple of seconds.
Help please!
I'm having the EXACT SAME ISSUE on 8.1. Can someone please help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! I'm stock rooted, no mods. Usb debug enabled, no lock screen and sync manager uninstalled. Can't get firewater soff thru adb because of this issue....

Turned out I was using a cheap USB cable. Are you using a good quality cable that can handle data as well as power?

I'm using the supplied cable that came with my ATT M8.

Try a different port. Yes it sounds silly, but I have had this same issue on 3 different types of phones. I would always forget about having this problem and I kept saying what the heck is wrong here until I realized it. I always end up putting it in the wrong port so I ended up labeling the correct port on the PC.
Thanks for the advice! I have 3 ports on my laptop, I've tried all 3 of them with no luck. I'm trying to s-off using firewater thru adb, after I run the first command "adb reboot" , my phone reboots. I get 3/4 of the way thru the commands for s-off and my computer asks me a bunch of questions about my m8 and then I get disconnected from adb, (no device)? I'm running Windows 8.1, stock root, no mods, screen lock off, usb debug on, fast boot off, sync manager uninstalled from my computer. I'm out of ideas to try. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.....

If your laptop only has USB3.0 ports, then you'll need to replace the built in Microsoft USB 3.0 drivers with the Intel USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers. This will give you proper ADB support when your phone reboots into fastboot mode. Also make sure you have proper HTC drivers installed as well (HTC Sync manager drivers should do the job, but if not, the HTC driver links can be found on this site).
Known issue with Windows 8/8.1 USB 3.0 and adb.
Sorry I don't have direct URL's at the moment, but I'm in the middle of a workshift. If you can't find what I'm talking about I'll post more info tomorrow.
Hope this helps.
Hey guys - Were you able to solve this problem ? I am stuck with same dilemma.

[Q] Alcatel A851L One Touch Sonic

Is there any one working on a custom recovery for this device?
It's been suggested that Framaroot will root this device. If any one has rooted this device please post how you accomplished it for any one interested.
Edit: Attempted Framaroot. No go. Attempt failed. If any one has any other suggestions please post them for any one with this device including myself.

good luck, i would love to have root on this phone.
i just got this phone and its not too shabby. coming from an s3.
Guy with the screen name "jonsvibe" says his is rooted but as of yet I haven't gotten him to reply to let us know how he did it.

Another way I came across is SRSroot. Haven't used it yet though so don't know if it will work or brick. Hopefully not the latter. Although StraightTalk said they will replace my GSII when one becomes available in the warehouse so I may not root this device as I will have to send it back at some point.
Also tried Z4root without success. That went as far as trying to gain root shell then freezes and closes. Things go wrong after that and I have to reboot to restore it back to normal.

I used SRS root to root mine. Seems to work fine. Having an issue with my WiFi not wanting to connect but it may just be my router being cute...
I used the smart root option and the Gandalf exploit was the one that worked for me...

Ok. Thanks to Chaz the rooting issue is solved. Now all we need is some one to take an interest in this device and provide us with a recovery and some roms. PLEASE????
I want to learn how to port and create myself but I currently have no PC to learn on so am totally dependant on the good people here at XDA.
Thanks XDA and God Bless you all.

root for alcatel a851l
After a few tries I finally was successful with the no computer framaroot app. I chose the install supersu and then Gandalf. Then checked with a root check app to make sure I was successful. One of the first apps I chose was adblockplus, it's nice to play games with no more ad interruptions. I live way out in the middle of BFE, at&t signal comes and goes. So I've played around a bit and installed internet booster and faster internet 2x apps. Now I'm getting a 4g signal at times and a great improvement in internet speed and even now see a better signal in general. I also installed an app and froze preinstalled apps I don't use and even hate just to make sure nothing important was damaged. Then the best feeling was to finally remove completely.
I'm still having trouble getting a hotspot or WiFi tether to run. Foxfi was my first choice, since I've used numerous times on a variety of phones but had no luck. I'm currently researching and trying different apps to get my phone to be wifi hotspot router to hook up my tablet to save my eyes from this small screen and then connect to my printer as well. Would be a lifesaver if my son could connect to his Xbox.
Ok. I bricked my device by changing to many fonts. Does anyone know the proper flashing tool for this device and can any one supply a system.img that I can flash back to my device to unbrick it? Any help would be appriciated.

Ive heard the bootloader is locked on this device. Can any one confirm this and can it be unlocked using fastboot or other wise?
The bootloader for this device is listed (by the app Quickboot) as (LFACQ0Q0). Don't know enough to know if this helps in unlocking the bootloader or not. Tried to boot into the bootloader using the quickboot app but no luck. Haven't found any thing on Google about this devices bootloader.
