[Q] Issues playing FLAC files - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening and thank you for taking the time to read my question. Hopefully, you will have answers too!
Here's the problem.
I have an extended FLAC collection stored on the phone, which can be played perfectly. There are however some 40 files that Apollo and doubleTwist refuse to play or read their tags. Other players (such as andLess or PowerAMP) can play them. All files work without problems when played from my computer (even when read directly from the sdCard placed into the S2). There are no encoding differences between these files and the rest.
I have tryied this on CM9 (latest nightly that was available before being pulled out - 4.0.4), JELLYBAM - v3.1.0 (4.1.2), CM 10.1 (latest nightly - 4.2.1) and MCM's CM 10.1 - vsync patched experimental build (latest nightly - 4.2.1). The same problem is present on all of them.
However, I have also tried flashing a stock 4.0.4 ROM and playing those files. Surprise, suprise. The basic default player has no problem at all with them. In short, this problem is only present in custom ROMs from what I can see.
And that makes no sense to me. At all.

Which spec is the spec that doesn't work?

Both specs are from file that are not played.

I'm almost certain its an issue caused by MediaProvider.apk.
Took at look at stock 4.1.2 and 4.2.1 ROM and in both cases, this file is gone. However, its still present in CM.

[Q] Shouldn't this video play???

I watch a lot of nba basketball games which were recorded from an hd internet broadcast called leaguepass. they can be in either mkv or mp4 container but they all have the same type of video and audio streams in it. by the specification i would say that these files should play without any problems, but they don't and i can't seem to find out what the problem is.

the audio plays perfectly, there's no stuttering, but the video seems to play a little bit slower than it is supposed to, and lags behind audio, the lag getting bigger as the clip playes longer. i tried to remux the clip into a .ts (what i sometimes, but not always, have to do to be able to play it on my network media player) and an .mp4 but it doeasn't help.
to me it seems like some kind of a framerate problem maybe, because other hd clips, which have a much higher bitrate, play normally. it seems like the a101 plays videos back at a slower framerate as it should. is this possible? oh, and on my hd capable network media player they play normally.
does anyone have an idea why the clips don't play as they should, and what i should try to make them work? otherwise, i'm very pleased with my a101 but watching these clips on my tablet was one of the main reasons to buy it. so big a reason that i'm considering selling my a101 and maybe getting a tegra2 tablet if i can't make it work, and i really don't want to do that. i know i can re-encode the clips and that this would probably help, but this is not an option, because i have a pretty old notebook, that would take one day to re-encode a 2gb clip like this.
thanks for the help!

unable to play 1080p

i am unable to play 1080p videos. either the player says the video cannot be played or the video plays but with a lot of lag. i have tried both in mkv and mp4 format. im using folio mod 1.4 and fix for this?
What bitrate are you using when playing MP4 files in 1080p?
I've been able to play 1080p using either MOV or MP4 with the Toshiba Media Player.

It just hit me! its cuz the video file is in my external micro sdhc which is only class 2 so that cant cope with the data rate required for the video.. will try and place the video in internal mmc and see what happens!

Yes class 2 would probably not be fast enough. I'm using class 6 and that works fine with MOV and MP4 in 1080p. I'm not sure about the bitrate but it would probably be in the same range as your file.
1080p in mp4 works fine on my device, although it FCs after a few seconds both with mVideoplayer and Toshiba Media Player when I try to play mkv files. Is that a known problem?
mddsd, dj_jokke, can you try to play this file?
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0O29FVN3
It's a 1080p .MOV file from a Canon 550D, it contains a h264 track with a bitrate of 45mbps, and a PCM track of 1.5mbps
Can you try to play it and tell me if it runs smooth? I need a tablet like this to watch videos of the camera without carrying a notebook
The ipad and the iphone4 can play that file flawlessly, but I want android that does the same

I've tried your 1080p .MOV file and the Folio can play it (I'm not sure about the sound).
Although every 4 second there is a freeze in the video for about a split second.
It's enough to get annoyed when watching the video...
Tegra 250 has some known limitations when it comes to high profile video.
A video with a bitrate of 45 mps would probably fall into the category of high profile video.
Although I'm not quite sure if this is the reason for the slight freeze in playback.

Thanks a lot for trying!!
This is the info of the video track, its a Baseline 5.0 h264 stream. Maybe tegra 250 supports it 1080p decoding even at baseline 5.0, but can't do a smooth playback with 45mbps.

[Q] Need video player for all formats

Does anyone know of a solid video player for .avi, mp4 and such?
Thanks,
Larry
diceplayer. plays every file i threw at it (at least the ones i use. lol)
don't know about solid but except for sometimes lagging (think old martial arts films) audio syncing QQ player works and is free

giving it a spin then
edit won't play .flv
Give Mobi player a try. It has a nice interface and has played all the MP4 and avi movies i have thrown at it.
rockplayer will play anything
Is there a player that will actually play wmv's without lagging? Or is that just an android thing?
vplayer and Qplayer

had helluva lagging trying a 180mb .mkv with rockplayer then audio fell out altogether same file as a .flv played sweetly
both files using software mode ..just bluetoothed the wildlife.wmv to the 3vo same problem with rockplayer audio fell out but the video played smoothly ..no option this time to choose hardware vs. software
edit just tried vplayer on the .wmv played smooth then 3/4 in audio dropped out the .mkv was choppy and audio way out of sync ..
wondering if this is fixable thru performance settings ..oops no root on this unit so nothing but "power saving" options
Mobo Player
I just tried MObO player and so far so good. Although, I only watched a couple of minutes of a .Mp4 movie. I need to watch the whole thing to verify if voice drops in the middle. Let you all know.. Thanks for the replies.

Diceplayer
Diceplayer use HW Video decoder at any container format + Audio decoder.
If you want to play MKV(+DTS+H.264)
all of player except diceplayer use sw video decoder.
sw video decoder use Huge CPU Power & Battery. and can't play well HD quality video.
Diceplayer can play 720p H.264 + DTS/Flac/OGG video flawlessly.

I use Mobo player also.
For 3D though I convert to MP4 and use the gallery player.
Mobo player though, played every video I through at it. Also has the ability to encode/play on the fly but that process is laggy.

wmv files have been problematic with most Android devices. Only device I have seen it work perfectly on is the SGS2. One good thing about Samsung is they include pretty much every codec you can imagine. I wish HTC did a better job with supporting the various codecs

in sw decoding. vPlayer is the best player.
it can use dual core. and ffmpeg optimization is very good.
but vPlayer can't use HW decoder when it play unsupported format.
if you play MP4(H.264/AAC). vPlayer or StockPlayer can play HD (720p).
but it play MKV(H.264+DTS), vPlayer can not use HW decoder.
it decode h.264 using sw decoder.
sw decoder use battery too much.
But, Diceplayer use HW decoder.
it can play HD MKV(+DTS/FLAC/AC3). and use less battery - almost same as stock player. but Evo 3D's SoC have only MPEG-4/H.264 HW Decoder.
so If you want to play non-standard video codec like RMVB , FLV , VP7 or something, vPlayer is the best choice.
but you want to play MPEG-4/H.264 video codec, diceplayer is the best.

The players I used were Daroon Player and the original stock Video player and I'm on Honeycomb 3.2.
Playback was very choppy and no audio.
What's your experience with HD video on S1 tablet? Any ideas, how to improve it?
Try mx video player, free from market.
Works great for me!
I found the same issue. A 1080p mkv that plays smoothly on my SGS2 phone stutters awfully on the tablet. I've tried all the suggested video players without success. I'm very disappointed. I hope it's just a SW issue that gets resolved in an update.

Thanks, will try it, but I doubt it's any good... I guess it's a codec or some 3.2 quirk...
EDIT:
Tried it and no, it did not help- same choppy video with no sound.
I'm wondering is it supposed to play AC3 sound out of a box?
EDIT2:
In mx player there are some options that I can choose: h/w decoder, s/w docoder and s/w decoder (fast).
When I choose software decoder, then I have sound for like 10 seconds And the picture looks *little bit* less choppier...
I Checked it good reviews and it looks good just have to wait to give me my tablet
It is the tegra 2 chips problem. It can't play High @L5.0 Profile Video..Cause i was P990 user.
You have to convert your video to Divx / XviD MP4.
AVC is no suitable to play higher than 3000kbps
Had the same issues... hence why I returned my tablet a long time ago...
Concerning the HD movies I've come to a conclusion, that it is practically impossible to watch them on the S1 tablet, since the majority of 720p are over 4GB and 1080p movies over 8GB, you really have no way of getting them inside your device.
You cannot store a file that's larger than 4GB on the S1's internal USB storage and Android can only read FAT32 formatted external memory (SD Cards or USB storage devices), so you cannot place your HD movies there either, because of the 4GB limitation of FAT32 file system. (I have tried to format SD card to exFAT, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4, but Android just won't recognize media formatted this way; Actually I'm very confused why it didn't recognize native linux Ext* partitions?).
And since we don't have root, we cannot mount external samba shares either...
So you're stuck and can only watch media with size under 4GB and with lower video bitrates.
***
Is my conclusion correct or is there currently a way to watch HD movies with file size over 4GB on S1?
I've downloaded blu-ray rips at under 4gb and watched them on my 42" tv, and they looked great. Now obviously they're not going to be as good as watching the disc itself, but if they're good enough to watch on a 42" tv and still look like good quality HD, then I'm sure they're good enough to watch on a 9" screen! You really shouldn't need anything above the 720p version - the Sony Tablet's screen is a lower resolution than 1920*1080 so couldn't display a 1080p file to it's full potential anyway.
Hope this helps!
Agreed.
Just that... my entire movie collection is at least 720p Just have to re-encode then I guess.
Guitardave, I totally take your point about the screen not being capable of displaying the full res of 1080p. But for me that's kinda like saying theres no point watching Bluray on an HD Ready (720p) tv because it can't display the full resolution. I don't really want to spend hours transcoding films to watch on the tablet when I go away, and be limited to just watching those which have been done.
It's just a shame, that's all. I expect the next model will cope without any problems. This aside, i'm still impressed and happy with he tab overall.
Just as an experiment, it would be good to download a movie trailer in 720p, and then the same trailer in 1080p, and see if you can actually see any difference in picture quality. I doubt it personally, on such a small screen (as opposed to, say, a 50" tv). Better still, do a blind test - get someone else to start the clips playing, and you make a call as to which is which...
Of course you won't notice the difference on such a small screen, but that's not the point.
The point is, you have to waste time re-encoding your movies to watch them on the go
I've got 720p mkv files to play on mx video player. Just had to switch the audio to sw. Video can be done with hardware no problem Looks amazing
Sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA App

I am able to play full 1080p HD video just fine on my sony tablet s. Using the stock video player too. No problem. No lag, no choppy frame-rate. You just need to convert your video to the right codec for tablet. If you go to PlayStation store from your PS3 and download free 1080P trailers and transfer it to your tablet you'll see that it plays perfect! To use the same codec that Sony uses for their HD video trailers in the PlayStation store, I use AVS video converter to convert my video for my sony tablet. And it works flawlessly. But most of my video are already that format so I never really have to convert all of them.
Just load any video in AVS video Converter, select convert to MP4, Under profile select for "tablet", select 1080p resolution(1920x1080p), select mp4 iso v.2-H.264/AVC codec. set the bitrate higher if you want better video qaulity and click convert.
Now you'll have a 1080p video that is perfectly optimized for your Sony tablet.
Thanks, but it still does not solve my main problems. Wasted time on video conversion and the 4GB file limit
Well I guess you would have to slit the movie into two parts if it's a long movie. The codec I use in the method above also compress the file size of the video. I have a 6 minute full 1080p HD video that looks great and it's only around 150MB, so a 1 hour movie would be around 1.5GB? I'm not that great with math. But anyways, it keeps the quality good while lowering the file size, which is good.
I know video conversion can be a waste of time but it's better than waiting for an update or a proper solution. We'll just have to deal with what we can do right now.
I used vplayer for my hd videos. Works well but sound goes out of sync when I adjust volume. I havve to restart vplayer.
try dice player I tried 720p video and it works with my tablet S make sure download tegra2 plugin

Which player did you used?
Try the Winamp player for example
I have installed and tried different players.
The players could not play the HE-AAC files.
Very strange.
With the 2.2 I had the problem and thought would be ex because Frodo, but the problem is also with the 2.3.7 CM7.
With the MXPlayer but it is Plays the Files. Added AAC extension.
But the WinAMP seems only the filetypes of Android to take and not go with my HE-AAC files.
