I watch a lot of nba basketball games which were recorded from an hd internet broadcast called leaguepass. they can be in either mkv or mp4 container but they all have the same type of video and audio streams in it. by the specification i would say that these files should play without any problems, but they don't and i can't seem to find out what the problem is.

the audio plays perfectly, there's no stuttering, but the video seems to play a little bit slower than it is supposed to, and lags behind audio, the lag getting bigger as the clip playes longer. i tried to remux the clip into a .ts (what i sometimes, but not always, have to do to be able to play it on my network media player) and an .mp4 but it doeasn't help.
to me it seems like some kind of a framerate problem maybe, because other hd clips, which have a much higher bitrate, play normally. it seems like the a101 plays videos back at a slower framerate as it should. is this possible? oh, and on my hd capable network media player they play normally.
does anyone have an idea why the clips don't play as they should, and what i should try to make them work? otherwise, i'm very pleased with my a101 but watching these clips on my tablet was one of the main reasons to buy it. so big a reason that i'm considering selling my a101 and maybe getting a tegra2 tablet if i can't make it work, and i really don't want to do that. i know i can re-encode the clips and that this would probably help, but this is not an option, because i have a pretty old notebook, that would take one day to re-encode a 2gb clip like this.
thanks for the help!
Does anyone know of a solid video player for .avi, mp4 and such?
Thanks,
Larry
diceplayer. plays every file i threw at it (at least the ones i use. lol)
don't know about solid but except for sometimes lagging (think old martial arts films) audio syncing QQ player works and is free

giving it a spin then
edit won't play .flv
Give Mobi player a try. It has a nice interface and has played all the MP4 and avi movies i have thrown at it.
rockplayer will play anything
Is there a player that will actually play wmv's without lagging? Or is that just an android thing?
vplayer and Qplayer

had helluva lagging trying a 180mb .mkv with rockplayer then audio fell out altogether same file as a .flv played sweetly
both files using software mode ..just bluetoothed the wildlife.wmv to the 3vo same problem with rockplayer audio fell out but the video played smoothly ..no option this time to choose hardware vs. software
edit just tried vplayer on the .wmv played smooth then 3/4 in audio dropped out the .mkv was choppy and audio way out of sync ..
wondering if this is fixable thru performance settings ..oops no root on this unit so nothing but "power saving" options
Mobo Player
I just tried MObO player and so far so good. Although, I only watched a couple of minutes of a .Mp4 movie. I need to watch the whole thing to verify if voice drops in the middle. Let you all know.. Thanks for the replies.

Diceplayer
Diceplayer use HW Video decoder at any container format + Audio decoder.
If you want to play MKV(+DTS+H.264)
all of player except diceplayer use sw video decoder.
sw video decoder use Huge CPU Power & Battery. and can't play well HD quality video.
Diceplayer can play 720p H.264 + DTS/Flac/OGG video flawlessly.

Is there a player other than the one that came on 3vo that plays in 3d or can adjust sbs to 3d because I know the built in player does not like .wmv

I use Mobo player also.
For 3D though I convert to MP4 and use the gallery player.
Mobo player though, played every video I through at it. Also has the ability to encode/play on the fly but that process is laggy.

wmv files have been problematic with most Android devices. Only device I have seen it work perfectly on is the SGS2. One good thing about Samsung is they include pretty much every codec you can imagine. I wish HTC did a better job with supporting the various codecs

in sw decoding. vPlayer is the best player.
it can use dual core. and ffmpeg optimization is very good.
but vPlayer can't use HW decoder when it play unsupported format.
if you play MP4(H.264/AAC). vPlayer or StockPlayer can play HD (720p).
but it play MKV(H.264+DTS), vPlayer can not use HW decoder.
it decode h.264 using sw decoder.
sw decoder use battery too much.
But, Diceplayer use HW decoder.
it can play HD MKV(+DTS/FLAC/AC3). and use less battery - almost same as stock player. but Evo 3D's SoC have only MPEG-4/H.264 HW Decoder.
so If you want to play non-standard video codec like RMVB , FLV , VP7 or something, vPlayer is the best choice.
but you want to play MPEG-4/H.264 video codec, diceplayer is the best.

Link to market please? I searched and couldn't find it?
Would any Prime owner play a 1080p MKV through HDMI to your HDTV, and confirm that it is indeed 1080p and not downscaled 720p?
Assuming that it is playing in software mode, can the Teg3 play a 1080p high profile video smoothly?
Lastly, again assuming SW mode, do you get 5.1 audio (AC3 or DTS) through HDMI?
To test for 5.1 audio, please play both the attached 5.1 WMA and AC3 clips through HDMI. The test clip will say "front left", "center", "front right", etc through only the respective channel. You should also hear an audible sound at the end through your subwoofer (assuming your setup has one).
TIA.

the prime can play the 1080p profile you mentioned with no problem. as far as HDMI goes, not sure.
can not answer the question about HDMI. But perhaps help when it comes to audio and video formats.

Media Info is a program that I using on my windows 7 computer. Really easy program to use. Just install and then all you have to do is to right click on the media file to get the info.

Thanks for the responses. However, I'm mainly interested in HDMI output. The reason is that most HC tablets thus far can only mirror what's on their 1280x800 screen through HDMI out. Hence, they can only do 720p (the status bar portion is cut off). I'm curious if the Prime has worked around this issue. It hasn't been a big deal thus far, since most Android tabs are still Tegra 2, which can't really play 1080p anyway.
The other issue is 5.1 audio through HDMI. Every HC tablet to date can only output stereo sound.

What I have understand and what I have read from a swedish Asus person that have answer some questions are the following.
Connected with Hdmi to external monitor and when you are on your homescreen/apps/games it will mirror that and you get 720p just like you have said.
When starting a movie that's is 1080p the Prime screen goes off and it will output the movie in 1080p to the external screen.
Also want to know if it can output 5.1 sound. Can't someone that have gotten their Prime test and see.

I played a couple 1080p music videos over HDMI and my TV reports they display in 1080p. They play smooth and look great. Of course they look fine when shown on the prime display as well, just not full resolution. I used the free mxplayer app from the market.
Only problem is I only get one audio channel thru HDMI no matter if I use the TV internal speakers or my amp (PS3, Dish, etc all work fine thru HDMI, just Prime or micro hdmi cable issue). One channel sounds good, other is silent. No matter what I try. If I connect headphones then the HDMI video continues and I get stereo sound in the headphones. But to connect this to my amp requires changing how everything is setup. I would like to find a solution to the single audio channel over hdmi.
It may be an issue with the software player. Try an MP4 clip with stereo AAC with the built-in video player and see if you can't at least get stereo sound through HDMI.
You can try any one of the clips from the link below. Suggest either the 1080p_max or the 1080p_master clip.

Yup. Using HW decode it will not display video on both.

The best player for smooth video and dual channel audio would be MX player. Select HW decoding for video and software decoding for audio. That seems to play the most.
Tried some of those mediafire videos. The video plays fine in 1080p, still only one audio channel over hdmi. Tried default player and half a dozen other players.
I played some Netflix video and I'm pretty impressed with the quality its outputting compared to my Acer a100. And no lag.

Would you play this attached test 5.1 WMA clip through HDMI and verify that you are getting actual 5.1? The test clip will say "front left", "center", "front right", etc through only the respective channel. You should also hear an audible sound at the end through your subwoofer (assuming your setup has one).
Will Test right now.
it did not display 5.1 but it DID go to each channel and I could hear it. I do not know if my amp is up scaling the audio or if it is actually doing it from HDMI but it did come all 5 and sub
My thus far flawless prime is now artifacting heavily from the HDMI output. It will also freeze and reboot if I accidentally turn it to portrait with HDMI connected.

So I bought this phone due to a friend's suggestion that it should be an ultimate media phone and that it would be able to play the media that I have. Because I watch a lot of anime, most of my videos are encoded in hi-profile h.264 video. Well, I bought the phone today and tried the default video player, but upon trying to load h.264 videos, I discovered it would not even load the video and said "video format not supported." I know sometimes the stock video player sucks(which apparently this one does) and so I download some third party video players like BSplayer and they would at least open the videos but they would lag a lot. To be clear, these aren't hi10p(10-bit) encoded videos. Just normal, hi-profile h.264 videos(I tried both .mkv and .mp4) and I tried multiple files so I know it isn't just a bad file. With .avi video files I could play 1080p 60FPS videos no problem. But a 720p hi-profile h.264 video will barely run at all.
If anyone could help me get these videos to play I would be very greatful. Also if anyone knows this is just an issue with the software and some kind of a codec upgrade could help, that would be awesome. If anyone knows of a video player that can play hi-profile h.264 video, I would be super happy. Thanks.
What are the levels/bitrates/audio codecs for the videos you're trying to play? I was doing some testing earlier with 30 second files, but found I could play 1080p h264 ([email protected]) mkvs with DTS audio with no issues in the stock video player
Here is the info of the video files that gives me the most problems and also the one that I really want to be able to play. If you could help me understand what it is about this file that makes to so it won't play well on this phone, I would be grateful. Other files have similar lag but this one lags the most, the audio desyncs almost immediately.

Well looking at it myself, it looks like it is encoded in 10-bit...I guess that could be part of the problem, but I am not really sure. It has played other 10-bit encoded files pretty well.
Yeah I had some difficulty with 10bit files, especially for resolutions 720p and higher.
Good evening and thank you for taking the time to read my question. Hopefully, you will have answers too!
Here's the problem.
I have an extended FLAC collection stored on the phone, which can be played perfectly. There are however some 40 files that Apollo and doubleTwist refuse to play or read their tags. Other players (such as andLess or PowerAMP) can play them. All files work without problems when played from my computer (even when read directly from the sdCard placed into the S2). There are no encoding differences between these files and the rest.
I have tryied this on CM9 (latest nightly that was available before being pulled out - 4.0.4), JELLYBAM - v3.1.0 (4.1.2), CM 10.1 (latest nightly - 4.2.1) and MCM's CM 10.1 - vsync patched experimental build (latest nightly - 4.2.1). The same problem is present on all of them.
However, I have also tried flashing a stock 4.0.4 ROM and playing those files. Surprise, suprise. The basic default player has no problem at all with them. In short, this problem is only present in custom ROMs from what I can see.
And that makes no sense to me. At all.

P.S. : Just on a personal note, CM 10.1 is beautifull and works perfectly on my device other than this. Congrats to the team.
I smell sweet chilli
Which spec is the spec that doesn't work?
Both specs are from file that are not played.
I'm almost certain its an issue caused by MediaProvider.apk.
Took at look at stock 4.1.2 and 4.2.1 ROM and in both cases, this file is gone. However, its still present in CM.
