[Q] Question regarding the current development scene for the SGSII - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I just wanna know if the current development scene here for the SGSII is still active.
It's because I plan on buying a secondhand one (regarding my choice of purchase, I'm still a college student, therefore I don't have the cash for a SGSIII, etc and am perfectly fine with the SGSII).
But before I go on with it, I want to know if development here is still great, how much have things changed (eg., have most of the top developers for the SGSII gone to other phones) and until when do you think the development here will be still active.
Thank you.

You could answer your own question easily by vising the dev sections.
Answer is yes its still very active and we have new roms and updates generally every day.

You just go to the roms and look at the dates of the version releases.

yes dev still actif even on old galaxy s i9000 section because there is always new android 4.1.2
and galaxy s2 at android 4.1.2 xxlsj with many mods is great are crazy man for me galaxy s2 is still the best

Well that's good to hear. Yeah, I checked the dev section, but I just wanted to make sure that it's genuine development I was seeing (not just duplicate roms, merely changed apks, etc).
Thanks guys!

Own Section for Android 4.x and 2.x ?!

Hello administrators,
for a better overview i think it would be better to make own sections in
Galaxy S II Original Android Development Thread and Android Development Thread for Android 4.x.x and 2.x.x ROMs.
Thank you
Has already been discussed on here a few weeks ago. It was decided this isn't going to happen. Case closed.
Negative on that Housten, negative on that.
In a month or two, three tops, 92.7% of all S2 around here will be running ICS, so the question of more overview will eliminate itself.

Hi forum.
This is a serious question
Can anybody tell me, in a few words, why ICS is better than 2.3.6 ?
Just a few examples please.
Thank You

'cause it's newer and has a higher version number!
OK, seriously
ICS adds a lot of new features for devs to use in their apps, it brings in features from the tablet-only Honeycomb 3.x Android, is a "united Android" for phones AND tabloits (as 2.x is for phones and 3.x for tablets).
Also has a revised UI, but if that's better or worse is everyones personal decision to make. (I personally like it very much).
It also makes better use of the available resources/hardware.

[Q] Best ICS ROM - Closest to stock with little to no mods as possible

I am trading my Galaxy Nexus today, for an S2 (international version) plus $200 cash. I think its worth it! Main reason is because I miss micro sd support and I used to have the S2.
The only thing is, I am taken back and am lost in the S2 forum. No clue whats best anymore so i need help!
I want an ICS ROM that is closest to stock as possible with fewest possible mods and tweaks for the S2?
Also, I heard something about official ICS coming this week?
Thanks everyone.
We don't allow "what's the best ROM" threads in this forum because we get several of these threads every single day.
Read and search the forums, the information is there. Several users have done extensive write-ups on the state of the various ICS leaks.

[Q] Can i9300 ROMs be flashed on AT&T/Bell i747?

I'm fairly sure someone has asked this question, but I couldn't find anything in search anywhere.
Is this possible? A lot of people are getting excited about the North American version of the phone, but there is little information about using any variation of the S3 firmwares on any S3.
This would really suck because all the development is happening on the I9300, so we don't get much development attention or flavours of ROMS.
No. And give it a few days/weeks, we'll have a ****-ton of development. 75% of the people don't even have their phones yet.
Again, NO. And if the S3 is like the Note, trying to flash an international ROM on a US phone will turn your pretty new phone into a paperweight (aka hard brick).
Thanks for clearing that up. I did forget about the fact that NA providors will only be carrying the NA variant which is probably a larger audience therefore more exposure to development.
:victory:
no... do NOT flash an I9300 rom until a developer releases a post, and dont worry. most developers dont have their phones yet, and within a couple of weeks, there will be lots of ports for roms like Omega, AOKP, CM9 ParanoidAndroid, etc

[Q] How far have custom firmware come on the SIII so far?

Hello.
So I just ordered a GSIII and it will probably arrive in a day or two.
Until then I decided to try learn everything about this phone (or at least as much as possible)
Here some simple(maybe) questions I have.
How far are they with the custom ROMs? I saw there are quite a lot of them so far but the once I looked on (based on jellybeans) where still having camera problems and a few other minor issues. Are there any stable custom roms where almost everything works?
Another question is. I saw there is a normal android dev sub forum and a new one called "original android dev"
I guess the first one is dev projects based on samsungs official ROM while the other one is for dev project based on AOSP?
What's the pros/cons for each? I guess the AOSP roms don't have the video window playing while doing other stuff and maybe not the galaxy beam thingy?
Also I have been pretty much dead on this forum for half a year.
Tried to do a comback two months ago but my Desire got bricked I think since it completely died during change of hboot.
Anything groundbreaking I have missed in the world of android the past half year (I already know about the most common things like the major things JellyBean brings but not all of the details)

[Q] samsung galaxy a3/a5

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i have recently bought the A5 (a5009) and have searched high and low on xda, but cannot find any support for the phone on this forum. As it is related to the alpha line, i was wondering if this sub-forum will be the place for news or ROMs for the A3/A5/A7? or have i missed something?
i feel its a great phone, but touchwiz is so ugly compared to stock android (in my opinion), and this could sway me away from the phone if there is no support.
i have noticed that it can be rooted already, but i dont see much point unless there are custom roms available or am i missing the point?
many thanks
Dom

If you can, return your A5 and get the alpha! . It is the value for money phone of the new series... It has 3x faster cpu and many times faster GPU and better camera than A5. :good::good::good:
To be honest, i don't think that anybody with some hardware knowledge will buy A5 or A7 at least until the price drops to adequate levels.
I don't want to turn this into a comparison thread as I just wanted to know where on xda I can find out about the new A series, but the alpha here in the UK is more expensive.
With my job, having an expensive phone is not a good idea as it can get damaged easily, that's why I went with a mid - range phone this time. I still have time to think though, so I may change the phone yet.
Has the alpha got many roms available for it?

There is ongoing CM11 port and there are 2 custom roms based on stock ROM.
And i think, that there must be separate subforum for A series...
If you root your phone you can remove samsung crap and install launchers... and you'll get whatever software experience you want, you just need to spend some time with it.
P.S. look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354&page=1712 it seems thet there are several requests for A5 forums... Just wait (and maybe add request) and there will be forums for your beautiful device to!
thanks for the help!

Exactly! I've searched everywhere and I couldn't find good resources for the A7 or for any of the A series. Like you did, I did find a how-to-root guide but I don't see much point either without custom roms. I was actually hoping for an AOSP rom too and this is usually where I find everything I need but there's no forum yet :/

In the post above mine there is a link for a thread that users can request devices to have thier own forum. I noticed quite a few people are now asking for the A series, so cast a vote and fingers crossed we get one
Has a thread opened up yet ? i did post a request for a thread , have found sources for KK kernel at samsung and have started building the cm12 basic's device tree. would like somewhere to document it.
darkspr1te
I haven't noticed one opening up so far. There is a lot of call for one in the thread I mentioned. I'm assuming the forum would be announced if one opens up?
No idea.
congrats on the cm progress. I would love to test out what you have and having a forum would make it easier

I bought it for that reason, i have the hardware knowledge and it's a qualcomm cpu, i've requested a forum for A3/A5/A7 devices, i've got kernel sources and msm8916 device tree for cm11/12,
now i just need the forum.
darkspr1te
@darkspr1te cool, do you have the sources uploaded? I would like to help out, I have the A500F.
Keep up the good work Darkspr1te. I am a bit of a noob on this and don't understand everything you say, but I'm looking forward to a mod for the A3.
Hopefully a forum will be opened soon.

Standard kernel sources can be found at samsung open source center. I have A500H/DS , sadly the sources i pulled wont even compile yet. Been busy on projects past week so i will only get into the sources again this wkend.
Still no feedback on a forum so i might hijack a thread here for now so I can at least start sharing.

you might want to start a thread on miscellaneous android dev.
Hello all, I have been following everything about the A3 recently since a cousin of mine just bought it; it´s so sad that there isnt a forum about this device. I would be happy to help on any new brews
It would be nice if they create a Galaxy A series forum. I have an A3, its a great small phone. I use it as my side phone(got a Note 4).
Recovery
Hey guys, I just found a Recovery, but it's Chinese. Working fine on A500M. Just flash with Odin. Now we can try to port Roms from other 410 SoC based devices!
ps: turn the phone on normally, and when the screen turn on, press volume down + power + home (yup, the same buttons of the download mode)
Srry by the bad english, I'm Brazilian
I was looking to get the A5 tomorrow...but the lack of a forum and ROMs is really making me hesitate.
