[Q] Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies..."
Originally my phone stopped working hours ago, applications were forced closed and i decided to force-shutdown my s2. Then i realised i could only enter recovery & download mode. I remembered setting my clock faster for -in game tokens per day- and i thought that was the problem. BUT i couldn't boot my phone. Saw videos on clockwork MOD and i tried with OBIN, but unexpectedly, it failed. As it failed, i couldn't do anything else so i removed USB and tried REBOOTING my phone. However, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" came up. I can't enter recovery mode now but only download mode. I've installed Kies on my computer but to no avail. Kies gave me error when i attempted to restore the mods settings using "Firmware upgrade and initialisation" and error was in korean so i did not understand. People stated that there are other ways using stock kernel but i can't obtain my stock kernel of my device as i couldn't even boot it up, let alone going into my phone's setting to check the stock kernel.
Any help? It seemed that i should've done a recovery instead of toying with OBIN and resulting in this. ANY WAYS TO UNDO THE FAILED OBIN MOD? Please, i would rather lose all my data without backup than to never ever start my phone again. Please reply ASAP! I want to restore EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE FAILED OBIN AND MY MESSING OF THE TIME IN MY PHONE. It doesn't matter if i have to wipe out all my data.

So I flash another ROM to my tab last night (AOKP) and it was running great but I wanted to go back to Clean Rom. I flashed the new rom and wiped everything and anything as I always do with roms. After flashing Clean rom then wiping, I rebooted to a bootloop. I left it overnight and checked on it, and it was still in a bootloop.
I hooked up and started running Odin today to flash stock and Odin was stuck on recovery.img for 3 hours while I was at work. I came home and hit the power button on my tablet and within a few seconds it loads a screen "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" Kies does not work on my PC so I cannot use it. Hitting power+volume up doesn't get me into recovery. I know it can be fixed but, how? I have looked all over for this same issue and cannot find much that will help. Any ideas?
*nevermind* finally found something that worked.
You should post the solution you found. It may help others.

I tried to update my I9100 simply by checking for updates on phone. Everything was going fine but when i downloaded OS and it said that it will reboot now, it had frozen during rebooting. Now I can't enter recovery mode but download mode works proper. When I turn on It's just black screen of death and "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" However Kies doesn't connect with it. It says that It has connection issues. I have rooted S2 with 4.1.1 OS and jeboo kernel 1.2.

Make sure you have correct drivers installed and usb debugging option is on, after widows loads all drivers when phone is connected disconnect phone using safely discoonect device and do a reboot and then after restart try again, also check your firewall and antivirus is not blocking the connection to phone.
Flash stock and go back to custom.
And please stop trying to update your device thru kies while you're actually on custom. Those two don't get along to well.

Hi,
My problem started a couple days ago. I had my Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100) charging overnight and when I woke up it was off. When I turned it back on it was stuck in a boot loop. I could not access recovery mode (although it would enter recovery mode and then drop out) but I could enter download mode. It was running a stock ROM and I had never played around with flashing before.
After leaving it for about a day without power nothing had changed so I started reading up about recovering from soft-brick and possibly the NAND read-write corruption at the guide on XDA here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/guide-fix-unflashable-soft-bricked-gsii-t1449771
The guide is a bit old now so some links are broken which made it more difficult for me to figure out what I had to do. Particularly with what file should be going where.
I ended up downloading the same ROM that i think was already on my phone from samfirmware and tried to flash it using Odin (various versions) without success. I tried to flash just the kernel using heimdall which now stops me from even entering recovery mode. I tried to flash everything in the ROM from samfirmware using heimdall but it got stuck on the second file (cache) at 62%, the first file was the bootloader which it said was successful. However now I don’t even get the Samsung logo anymore. I only get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I still have download mode so I have hope.
I haven’t tried repartitioning yet, is that my next step? Can someone give me instructions on how to determine what the problem is and what I should or shouldn’t be flashing? I’m not against going to a completely new ROM like cyanogen mod either. I need some help from people who have more experience with this.
Thanks for your help, I should be around to answer questions.
Same thing happened to me
Hi, almost the same thing happened to me - except that I was running Cyanogenmod 10 custom rom and I'm not being able to go into recovery mode, but I can go into download mode.
So far I've only managed to worsen things while trying to use odin to write a recovery kernel, so I had a bad firmware upgrade and now instead of powering up to Samsung logo it goes into the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen. But I'm still able to boot into download mode.
Did you manage to fix your phone? If so, how did you do it?
Apologies if this post is inappropriate for the forum, if so could I be directed to the correct place?
I recently flashed the latest CyanogenMod to my Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100). However, after some tinkering I managed to make it unable to access the internet via WiFi or Mobile Data.
Unable to fix this after asking online I figured I'd just flash a stock ROM, and go back to square 1.
In flashing, something ****ed up. I did everything right AFAIK but mid flash the phone went to the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." screen.
The device will now only boot to this screen, and I cannot access recovery mode.
I went immediately to Kies, plugged in my phone, intending to use the firmware recovery tool, however Kies does not recognise the phone. I went through the troubleshooting procedure, redownloaded the drivers (multiple times) and still no joy. I even uninstalled Kies and reinstalled. Following that, it now gives a "Device is not responding" error message.
I can't do a firmware recovery, I can't flash a new ROM until I can enter recovery mode, and I can't turn my phone on.
I hesitate to ask but... am I bricked?
Wat do?
Thanks in advance for any help.
A few months ago, I tried rooting my phone and posted about it:
"I am completely new to rooting and I followed Wolfdroid's tutorial to root my phone.
I got to the point where i had CWM, but when I was trying to install from my SD card there was no option.
I'm stuck with the Samsung "unlock" Custom load up screen and every time i try to go into recovery, it immediately goes to download odin mode, but it still says im not rooted. I know it's possible to boot normally by going to download and pressing Volume down, but if it's possible I would like to get my phone back to an completely unrooted state.
I've tried unrooting with SuperSU but that just ends up freezing.
Samsung Galaxy S4(Verizon) SCH-I545 NK1"
After a while I gave up on bringing my phone back to a completely unrooted state, but now my phone was stuck in a reboot loop, where i would be able to use it for a few seconds then it would reboot. I am completely unable to get into recovery mode, and when I do try, it goes into the downloading screen. So I tried flashing a stock rom onto my phone, but that failed, so now it can either go into downloading screen or go to a screen were it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." I have no clue what to do at this point.
have you tried surge's emegerncy stock? here. It's an NC5 stock rom, but since bootloader didnt get locked up for kitkat until OC1 it might work.
