Looking for the impossible... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have a USCC note 2, posting here as the Verizon phone is the closest to the USCC version. Looking for a rom that is bone stock or as close to stock as my nexus 7 is, I want the stock jb launcher but would include all the s-pen apps and functionality along with the allshare apps and functionality. Is there such a beast for my phone?

You're asking for waaaasaaaay too much at this stage of the development game. There are roms that are stock, I know the VZW note 2 has an alpha cyanogen build, but no s note and other apps to my understanding.
And I dont think you should be flashing roms all willy nilly.

I use the stock debloated and then use Trebuchet launcher. Gives me the look and feel of AOSP (with some functionality) and I retain all of the stock features of TW, inculding the S-Pen, Dailer, some of the widgets (but not all I'm afraid). It can't hurt to give it a try. Just search for a trebuchet.apk. I did and I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the replies, just researching what may be available at the moment. I dont plan to root for at least a month as I want to make sure there are no hardware issues.
I find all the roms quite confusing, just trying to decipher the differences along with all the new jargon doesnt help.
Thanks again.

Samsung Apps Once on Custom Roms?

Hey guys, usually not many people care about getting any of the stock manufacturer apps back after going to custom rom, but in this case there are some apps and features that I really do not want to lose. Is there any way to get these to run (backing up the apps in Titanium is easy) after going to any of the upcoming stock JB-based roms? Apps that I am referring to in this cases are:
Samsung camera (REALLY don't want to lose this), WatchON (this one either), Samsung calendar widget, S Health, messaging app, the slew of features involving the gestures, finger hovering, eye tracking, voice commands, the high sensitivity setting for screen (for gloves), etc...
Can we get any of these back??
the gestures and air view, consider that a big no...
but the other things are apps and widgets, they might just straight up install and work or might take a little messing with to make them work
I'd love to get my hands on the stock Calendar app to install on my N7.
I really like the way it looks and functions.
What do you think the chances are that it will work?
Can somebody pull the apk out for me?

don't flame me, i haven't owned my first android for a week yet...
so once we root the S4, we lose all of those S4 specific items such as the camera, the Air view, Air gesture, etc???
wouldn't those all be part of the ROM we are using to root? i am only asking because, if these ROMs are device specific, why wouldn't they be included after a root?
ps, if my description and/or terms are way out of whack, i apologize... again, this is my first go around and i have been on this forum for the better part of a week trying to understand EVERYTHING related to the rooting process before actually diving into it...

No, you won't lose them unless you flash a debloated ROM, or an AOSP-style ROM.
No. Not once you root. If you use an AOSP based rom, you will not be able to use apps or widgets that require the TouchWiz framework. If you use a TW based rom, they are still available for use without issue.

Eh no problem, at least you read before asking lol. Rooting won't disable those features, but the concern is that installing roms that aren't touchwiz based ,I.e. based on the stock Rom, will do so. Roms based on android open source (AOSP, cm and many others) will likely not have most of the touchwiz enhancements, but hopefully we can still use watchON because its basically the only feature I use lol.

Thank you sir, now i will search for a TW rom
yup. My question is will there ever be an AOSP ROM that supports all the Samsung features. At least the hover and air view. My friend told me its because the Samsung source code is unavailable but there are people working on getting it to work.

Simple answer is no. Also those things are closed sourced

Why not try a different approach?
Okay, hear me out before you just say 'no' to this.
There is a really popular TouchWiz (Samsung, in essence) ROM right now called HyperDrive. It's currently on release 5.7 and it keeps ALL of your phone's stock functionality, plus it adds even more customization options and tweaks! It runs very smoothly and feels a lot better than stock, lag-wise.
However, consider tacking on third-party launcher. Right now, I'm running HyperDrive 5.7, and I'm running Nova Launcher on top, and I have everything looking like stock JB. However, even with all of the stock JB looks, I've still got all of the samsung apps fully working, since it's still a TW ROM. I've even got the Nexus 4's Software Buttons running, and it looks/feels really cool.
Take it from a fan of both stock JB's look and feel, and TouchWiz's custom capabilities and controls.

Best way to get stock look and feel?

I'm considering buying this great phone but TouchWiz makes me really upset. The thought of using it everyday after being used to my Galaxy Nexus interface is not sitting well. So is getting a launcher like Apex or Nova the best way to get a stock look? Or will a custom Rom be best? Are there any Roms currently available with a completely stock look and feel?
Custom ROMs are the best, and many like cyanogenmod or beans can provide the stock feel for you, but while the boot loader is still locked, launchers are the best choice and you also get to keep the Samsung apps, like camera and some gestures and what not

I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus as well, and had AOKP. I picked up an S4 the other day.
So far, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I installed Nova Launcher to get the look and feel of stock back. The free version has an option to use stock icons and my now my home screen itself looks pretty much exactly the same as it did before. The apps, of course, are not stock, and I'm toying with the idea of swapping out the messaging app for the stock one. The contacts app is better than stock in my opinion, and I like having Facebook contact integration back.
The notification bar is similar to AOKP's notification bar, and I am generally not bothered by it. The rest of the stuff that bothers me (pointless bloatware, etc.), are easily resolved after rooting. I also just copied over the notification sounds from my Galaxy Nexus and am just about as happy as I will get.
My two cents, anyway.
Won't the stock Android be ported from the Google version of the S4? That's what I'm hoping for.

There's a couple ROMs out there right now. I'm currently using an unofficial CyanogenMod port, and an official build should be out sometime soon.

Note 2 TW ROMs fading away

Hate to say it but looks like some Note 2 TW devs are leaving the phone. Seems they are vanishing weekly. Too bad because there were some great ROMs out there and I hate to see some of them go for the VZW variant. Really sad that VZW and Samsung are making things so difficult for devs these days. Makes me wonder if they left it open just long enough to steal hard working dev ideas for themselves without having to pay an R&D department to test the OS. Looks like AOSP 4.3 ROMs are starting to take off though, and with the addition of the App Bar, Halo and a host of other mods by great devs we still have a few options. That coupled with great mod apps in the Play Store you can almost get the TW experience with AOSP now.
Or maybe they are moving on to other projects until we get the 4.3 TW update. Then, hopefully some of them will return and develop for one of the top devices still on the market. The Note 3 will most likely be locked down like the S4 so I am thinking the Note 2 may be the last great Samsung device open to rooting and having the ability to flash custom ROMs.
To all the devs that made (or still making) great TW ROMs for our VZW Note 2, thanks for all your hard work. I know I have enjoyed being able to try different ROMs and tinkering with them. You all deserve donations and our gratitude. You guys and gals make the Android experience enjoyable for all of us.
I'm sure they will be back when we get the 4.3 update. This is the only phone that has an unlockable bootloader, with TW on verizon that's actually decent.

What's wrong with the s3?
I'm sure the s4 will have an unlocked bootloader soon, especially with the 3k+ bounty.
TBH, this is what always happens. it makes sense that the devs move back to the latest phone. plus the note 3 is coming out soon too, so, yeah, pretty sure what happened to the s3 will happen to the note 2.
at first I really liked TW, but then I switched to the PACman rom and I haven't looked back. the features on TW are nice, but honestly I don't use them that much. i know every user varies, but there are a lot of apps out there that replace TW functionality. I really haven't noticed since switching. I just was unhappy being on 4.1.
As a TW ROM author for the S3 I can tell you guys TW has its limits and there is only so much we can do so we are all awaiting the 4.3 upgrade. We can mess around with themes and included apps, inverting things, but there are limits. It is not like TW has a nightly source code to keep building from. Just be patient and maybe play with some different themes.
Also keep in mind that the xposed framework has removed a lot of the necessity for a true custom rom as it does just about everything that previously had to be hardcoded in. Most custom roms anymore are really just themes with xposed installed by default.

The S4 wont be unlocked...however Im sure something like Kexec or Safestrap will be used to work around the Locked Bootloader. If you read into the details of Qualcomm processors and qfuses, you will quickly learn its pretty much impossible.
JB is still a very active rom, as is Nebula. One of the problems I have run into is that many of the roms are built on the international base. Cleanrom was the perfect rom for me but unfortunately Scott has moved on.
Jellybeans = very active, but I personally seem to always have little issues, I have however never seen anyone else with them.
Cleanrom = dead, but rock solid stable for me
Transnebula = Great support, and very active, however the tab UI just does not work for me... I would KILL to have these guys put together something like clean rom but with floating multiwindow. (One of the devs is also f&*(ing Batman in disguise I swear, listening to his gadget list is bloody awesome)
Lab Rats = a theme beast, but I am not really into theming, seems to me there is always something not quite right with custom themes.
There are also a few international based roms that are very active.
Edit: Oh yeah, also beware flashing Lab Rats at work unless you want your co-workers making fun of you for the boot up sound

Agreed. I actually missed my GS3 for about 2 months until the N2 ROMs started picking up. Now I'm digging PAC Man 4.3 and can't wait to see what happens with TW 4.3. Just hope the devs migrate back eventually. The N2 is a great device.

We have patches to run roms from other carriers, as well as rock solid roms that work flawlessly. X posed has opened up almost endless possibilities, and active themers(<is this even a word?) )help the look of a lot of the roms we do have. One of the best things we have is a bunch of good natured members willing to help, and learn. This goes a long way. New developers are born every day. Some will leave, some will stay. Heck Deckoz just started. Trans nebula is his first rom. This phone is a nice piece of kit, and unless I can get a xperia xl super cheap, and working flawless on Verizon, then I am staying put for awhile. You guys are stuck with me.

That and just enjoying the phone with what we have.

Kenny,
Since your are reading ( and cleaning- thanks!) a lot of posts I wonder if you have seen any ExFat support for AOSP roms.Actually I want to be able to format a 64GB sandisk and be able see all ( most) of 64G and be able to put files larger than 4G.
Any AOSP roms/kernels with such support?
Many thanks

Updates are great, but since TW has its own limitations and we've had 4.1.2 for how long now? Tweaks can only be so tweaky! 4.3 will breathe alot of new life into our phone. I am not upgrading to the N3 lest something makes it more desirable. But seeing that we get the same update it will have, I am willing to wait a month to see what happens.

I have the gs3 now, but I'm thinking about buying the note 2, and I was looking through the roms section for this phone. there are not many roms for this phone. Why is this? Is it because the spen? I don't know. I was just wondering. Thanks

Probably for one, the locked bootloader and because the N3 is already out. There are a lot of custom ROMs though, at least enough to find one you really like. Most people just choose to run Beans or an AOSP rom. You can easily replace a lot of TW functionality through different apps with AOSP roms, though.

I would say that this is definitely true for some, but for others, no, Xposed doesn't make custom roms unnecessary.
There may not be the plethora you were hoping for, but the roms are top notch. Every one I've tired is a solid daily driver and still sports great features.
Thanks for the reply's guys
To take a stab at the spen question. The international note 2 has spen but more roms so I think it has more to do with Verizon as our carrier. And maybe for those of us here we have all been really happy with what we've got to play with... I dunno some just want a good debloated and customized TW rom in order to have full functionality of the spen.
also if you look at the amount of thread reads you can see which ones are more popular than others. I will say that Touchwiz based ROMs are easier to deal with (in my opinion) than AOSP/CM ROMs. The main differences between them is in the name, you maintain the Touchwiz S-Pen and other touchwiz functionality.
I went from the S3 to the N2. I miss all of the diversity of the S3 community but I do not regret switching at all. I love the phone and everything that goes with it.

Lack of T-mobile S5 roms

First and foremost, I absolutely don't want anyone to think I'm complaining about developers or anything like that. I certainly appreciate everyone's hard work when they are putting together roms for any phone.
That being said, I am just curious why there are so few roms for the T-mobile Galaxy S5. I had the S1-S4 for Sprint and all of them had tons and tons of roms. All those roms had lots of theme work and unique items. I am not seeing any of that on the T-mobile side. Is this variant preventing that or is there just not enough love for it?
Just as an example.. check out these rom for the sprint S5....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/development/rom-team-nocturnalunofficalcm-11-0-t2883072
There is not too much of a difference between two touchwiz Roms. Its pointless to have same thing packadged with different names. I love the couple of options that are available in T-Mobile.
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
In order for the rom to work with wifi calling it has to retain the touchwiz base, and like ceo.mtcl said theres only so much you can change. There is a CM rom available for the device, i gave it a test run on my G900T. It ran great but without wifi calling its almost useless to me

Have you checked the Unified Development section? And yes, since the arrival of Xposed, members can now do a lot to their phones rather than the developer spend 100's of hours themeing all the elements of a ROM and have a post every other day saying "it is too blue". It is comments like that that have pushed developers into saying "why bother". You cannot make everyone happy with how you theme something and members forget that these ROMs are made for the developers, and they decided to share...it is not their jobs and they are not getting paid for those ROMs. But NOW the power is in your hands thanks to Wanam and everyone working on toolboxes to allow you to do more. Not enough? There a several icon changing apps on Play. There is also Themer. Add that to all the awesome flagship phones released almost every 9 months by many manufacturers. A lot of developers have wanted a challenge so tried something new and changed manufacturers. So yeah...you won't see 30 TW ROMs anymore.
Also add Verizon and AT&T with locked bootloaders discouraging developers.

I'm still running srock/unrooted, until a solid aosp rom drops, which I believe hasn't happened yet due to kernel development? Icons are themed and running ADW launcher to change icons and themes to keep things clean, but themes are still limited. Looks like a lot of the "flavors" of AOSP are covered: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development
My guess is there would be a lot more if the bigger 2 carriers AT&T and Verizon hadn't made AOSP impossible with their locked bootloaders. That would seem to be the main reason for lower development after the S3s.
Reason also is the S5 is not as popular as thought, many were sold, but to users that could care less about doing custom roms, and the age group is probably the younger crowd. The OS is simply awful.
Correct me if I'm wrong, we can probably flash the ones from unified development no?

yes you can as long as you dont care about tripping knox.
But be warned, Make sure you only flash something that is designed for the s5 and something that has been tested and works on the s5.. You can still brick the phone if you make some stupid mistakes or decisions.
Remember that Flashing the phone is your responsibilty. So if you screw up and brick, dont blame anyone for your mistakes. Reading and searching is your best friend, before you flash anything to your phone.
Yeah to flash anything from there you would have needed a custom recovery this tripping the Knox counter.
Even if there were aosp roms for our specific device, I doubt that would be different. Since aosp roms all have custom kernels that would trip Knox anyway
