Samsung Apps Once on Custom Roms? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys, usually not many people care about getting any of the stock manufacturer apps back after going to custom rom, but in this case there are some apps and features that I really do not want to lose. Is there any way to get these to run (backing up the apps in Titanium is easy) after going to any of the upcoming stock JB-based roms? Apps that I am referring to in this cases are:
Samsung camera (REALLY don't want to lose this), WatchON (this one either), Samsung calendar widget, S Health, messaging app, the slew of features involving the gestures, finger hovering, eye tracking, voice commands, the high sensitivity setting for screen (for gloves), etc...
Can we get any of these back??

the gestures and air view, consider that a big no...
but the other things are apps and widgets, they might just straight up install and work or might take a little messing with to make them work

I'd love to get my hands on the stock Calendar app to install on my N7.
I really like the way it looks and functions.
What do you think the chances are that it will work?
Can somebody pull the apk out for me?

don't flame me, i haven't owned my first android for a week yet...
so once we root the S4, we lose all of those S4 specific items such as the camera, the Air view, Air gesture, etc???
wouldn't those all be part of the ROM we are using to root? i am only asking because, if these ROMs are device specific, why wouldn't they be included after a root?
ps, if my description and/or terms are way out of whack, i apologize... again, this is my first go around and i have been on this forum for the better part of a week trying to understand EVERYTHING related to the rooting process before actually diving into it...

No, you won't lose them unless you flash a debloated ROM, or an AOSP-style ROM.

No. Not once you root. If you use an AOSP based rom, you will not be able to use apps or widgets that require the TouchWiz framework. If you use a TW based rom, they are still available for use without issue.

Eh no problem, at least you read before asking lol. Rooting won't disable those features, but the concern is that installing roms that aren't touchwiz based ,I.e. based on the stock Rom, will do so. Roms based on android open source (AOSP, cm and many others) will likely not have most of the touchwiz enhancements, but hopefully we can still use watchON because its basically the only feature I use lol.

Thank you sir, now i will search for a TW rom

yup. My question is will there ever be an AOSP ROM that supports all the Samsung features. At least the hover and air view. My friend told me its because the Samsung source code is unavailable but there are people working on getting it to work.

Simple answer is no. Also those things are closed sourced
Wayne Tech Nexus

Why not try a different approach?
Okay, hear me out before you just say 'no' to this.
There is a really popular TouchWiz (Samsung, in essence) ROM right now called HyperDrive. It's currently on release 5.7 and it keeps ALL of your phone's stock functionality, plus it adds even more customization options and tweaks! It runs very smoothly and feels a lot better than stock, lag-wise.
However, consider tacking on third-party launcher. Right now, I'm running HyperDrive 5.7, and I'm running Nova Launcher on top, and I have everything looking like stock JB. However, even with all of the stock JB looks, I've still got all of the samsung apps fully working, since it's still a TW ROM. I've even got the Nexus 4's Software Buttons running, and it looks/feels really cool.
Take it from a fan of both stock JB's look and feel, and TouchWiz's custom capabilities and controls.

Who wants cornerstone multi-window for AOSP

I've seen a little bit of talk about this now that we have some AOSP ROMs and personally would like to see this happen but I know that if I just go make a request to someone like the Cyanogenmod team I'll probably not get a response or just be told they're considering it and that's it(I could be wrong). So I'm making this thread to find out just how many people are interested in this and figure out how we should get a hold of whoever can make it happen.
I don't want to get a bunch of people to just start mass email/post/calling anyone into submission. These dev's are already doing a lot of great things for us and I don't want to ruin that. I would really rather give Google an idea of how many people want this feature or already have it through one of Samsung's ROMs and would like to keep it with AOSP so that maybe they won't give the AOSP dev's such a hard time.
So go ahead and chime in if you want multi-window for AOSP and if you know who we should get a hold of or have a good idea of how we should go about asking or if you're a dev who's tired of people always asking for features and just wants me to shut up.
In case you haven't seen cornerstone it's similar to Samsungs multi-window. http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/
In case you haven’t heard the story between Google and Cyanogen about cornerstone yet. http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/samsung-adds-multi-window-despite-threat-from-google-2012109/

No thanks. CM isn't going to risk it. Google allows CM to use their proprietary apps and gives CM users access to the market and other Google services. If multi-window modes are going to risk that relationship then I don't want it.

I understand that and I know that's why CM didn't pursue it before but I think that now that Samsung has gone ahead and made multi-window available it gives us a good precedence, especially if they start using it on more phones than the note 2, like the S3. I think the big thing would be making it only work for apps that specifically state that they work with cornerstone the same way that Samsung does. I know it's a small amount of apps right now but once it hits a certain point most developers would hopefully make it standard when they make their apps and the ones that won't play nice with odd screen sizes can be left to run full screen. I'm just hoping that if they implement it they can use the same flag in apps that Samsung does so that so that app devs have a little more of a reason to make their apps use it for multi-window on AOSP and sammy ROMs.
I haven't found an app that doesn't work. Haven't really tried with games but did check a few with no problems. It works Google should roll it out.

I think in this case Google is too worried about catering to the lowest denominator - ie. the people with smaller less known android phones rather than beasts like the S3/Nexus 4/DNA/Note 2 and their misguided complaints that their new device can't run the core OS properly.
I asked Entropy about it in IRC a couple nights ago but he said it really makes no difference even with Samsung implementing Multi window. I looked into cornerstone but it seems a bit outdated. It was last updated 10 months ago.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
It hasn't be updated to work with Jelly Bean yet, they are still working off of ICS source.
Thanks slick_rick and imnuts glad to hear some input from a developer. I've done a little research and haven't found any JB ROMs using it so darn. Unless it gets updated or if anyone thinks that Samsungs multi-window can be ported to non touch-wiz roms. I should go see if I can get a hold of anyone at onskreen to see if they have any plans on updating.

Looking for the impossible...

I have a USCC note 2, posting here as the Verizon phone is the closest to the USCC version. Looking for a rom that is bone stock or as close to stock as my nexus 7 is, I want the stock jb launcher but would include all the s-pen apps and functionality along with the allshare apps and functionality. Is there such a beast for my phone?
You're asking for waaaasaaaay too much at this stage of the development game. There are roms that are stock, I know the VZW note 2 has an alpha cyanogen build, but no s note and other apps to my understanding.
And I dont think you should be flashing roms all willy nilly.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
I use the stock debloated and then use Trebuchet launcher. Gives me the look and feel of AOSP (with some functionality) and I retain all of the stock features of TW, inculding the S-Pen, Dailer, some of the widgets (but not all I'm afraid). It can't hurt to give it a try. Just search for a trebuchet.apk. I did and I was pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for the replies, just researching what may be available at the moment. I dont plan to root for at least a month as I want to make sure there are no hardware issues.
I find all the roms quite confusing, just trying to decipher the differences along with all the new jargon doesnt help.
Thanks again.

[Q] My girl off the iPhone... recommendations?

After months of convincing her how much better Android is then the iPhone (and buying her a Nexus 7 tablet - which finally pushed her over the edge) she has picked up a SIII.
Now, my first instinct is to grab the sucker, root it, put CyanogenMOD on it. But, that is the "hacker" in me talking.
I don't want to "ruin" her experience. So, do I leave the phone "as is" with the TouchWiz on it? Do I install a custom ROM?
I know ZERO about the phone as I've only purchased Nexus devices for myself (Yes, I have a N4 - complete with broken glass back already).
So I am turning to you all, that have the phone, to help me help her.
Any tips, recommendations, experiences, hacks, ROMs, Apps, etc..etc.. that you can share would be helpful.
Thanks all!
Same with my other half, I ended up leaving Touchwiz on it as everything else was too difficult for her and I suppose Touchwiz is simple, isn't it?

She knows nothing about that... remember she is coming from an iPhone. So iPhone users aren't really as technical / geeky as us Android users are. :good:
I am going to have to root it though. I just realized that Google Wallet is not allowed to be installed on the device. She REALLY wants that. So a "root" is a definite now at this point.

I'd say go with the Sammy-based ROMs (the ones in the regular development section) so it has all the TW features, but put Domination theme on it to give it an AOSP look, as I hate the TW design. You can try null rom, it has domination included. Also check out JKay framework in original development and see if you want to use that as well, it's included in the null rom too.
dont make her to escape from touchwhiz...its actually a nice launcher for someone who started it....its nice and simple with all the stuff thats needed for a user...
also, check what all apps are synced with network all the time, so that she is not frustrated by the battery usage...sync apps only that are required...by default some of the unwanted apps will be synced...
also, if you are rooting, make take off all the crappy apps...i think that should make it to be a good experience for her n you... have a nice journey with sgs3 and N4..
Yup, since I am rooting it, off comes all the 'bloatware' installed on the phone.
How does that effect OTA from Sammie though? If an update comes out and I have removed the 'bloatware' will the OTA still come through and update without getting the "Red Android Exclamation" mark ?

You can have UltimaROM. It is a Sammy based ROM with JB Domination theme- looks beautiful. It has wide open choice of menus in the AROMA Installer that can let you not to install bloatware. You can have Nova Launcher within that installation to not have Touchwiz also . I am running this ROM for almost 3 months.

Girls like simple stock, but root and a decent kernel will help her (no ads etc and better sound/performance)
I have a N7 and love it. For the S3, try the most popular rom with lots of support and gui installer (omega v37) to start with. It has lots of different themes to try from the kitchen as well as mods etc. It's very stable. I use the boeffla kernel, close to stock, fantastic sound enhancements, she'll love it... As you may know, the XDA community is ALWAYS keen to make ANY sacrifice to help another user.
As this time it is my turn, and noone offered this earlier, I think that the easiest for you way would be if you'll send your girl with her phone to me for about two-three weeks.
I can ensure you that it will not ruin her (and I hope mine as well) experiences< and I can assure you- it will be plenty of rooting...
I would suggest keeping it stock so it has all the features but putting nova launcher on to keep it a consistent user experience with her nexus 7.

When he gets it back, though, it'll be obvious it's been modified and the guy won't get any more support. The phone will probably behave differently too.
Cyanogenmod might be a little too intimate for an android virgin, stick to only touchwiz.
And getting the xella kernel is recommended to be on the safe-er side of the sudden death bug (or any other kernel with the bug fix).

[Poll] AOSP/AOKP vs. Touchwhiz

Which do you prefer and why?
I prefer stock touchwiz, 100% reliable and the TW camera takes better pictures than AOSP.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
There is already a thread discussing this, though it has been derailed by the asinine "battery life" talk. Why people want to see how many days their phone can go without charging it I don't know.
I prefer aosp, but I use TW more because so far voice dialing over BT doesn't work on aosp and the volume is very low.
The theme engines on aosp as well as the reassigning soft button functions are very nice features.
I hardly use the s-pen or the multi window.
I prefer AOKP (AOSP) simply because of the look and certain functionality... You have a lot more features in AOKP than TW. But it also depends on the TW based ROM you install.. If you like the s-note and multi windows functions of TW you're better off with that ROM but things like ribbons soft keys 4.2.+ only apps (dash clock for example) and general UI themes, if you like that and can sacrifice the volume and the aforementioned calling over BT than AOKP is the way to go.. But over all stability and stock features that identify this phone as a Note 2, then a TW based ROM is what you want.. I recommend Jellybeans ROM
To be honest. It really depends on the user. Samsung spent a lot of time putting in features for their own version of Android. SPen functions that work for the people that use them and extras that keep the phone at the for front of app ability. If you have no intention of using the phone for what it was built for, love the essential specs then AOSP is for you. I myself like the functions and capability of Sammy in this aspect. As a long time HTC lover and Avid Sammy hater, have come to like the built in Samsung features. I love to hate this phone. As a person that is currently with a group of others suing Sammy over the Behold. I actually like this phone. Like all other companies, Samsung has created a very decent hardware phone and the feature set from them has made it work even better. Do I miss my HTC Sense features. OF course. Sense makes phones easy. But I've learned to make it work for me. End result, AOSP is too bland and short for me. I like ANDROID because I can make it my own. Customization is almost as easy on this is the same as others. I don't like Samsung's blatant Apple icon copy, but I know how to make it my own.
I prefer TW
I prefer AOSP, but until there's no gps issues I don't run it all the time. A lot Iof people say there are work a rounds, but I've learned from other phones that if gps isn't 100% working it'll mess up when you really need it even if it has been working. I really love multi window but not enough to overcome everything I hate about touchwiz.
TW until PA3.5 is ported I use multi windows too much and as far as I know the sammy keyboard is the only one that supports one-handed operation AND swype.

And here I thought I was an idiot for buying a Droid Eris for my first Android phone
Dang that Behold is an old phone released in 2008. Here I thought my 2010 Epic 4G is old.
AOSP doesnt show my external sd card
Just to throw out my 2 cents..... Coming from a GNex, I was running 4.2.2 and thought it was great. I was due for an upgrade and got the Note 2. I thought I was taking a step back with 4.1.2, but I have to say, everything just works! No issues with GPS anymore, no battery drain (although there is no comparison to the battery of the gnex next to the note 2). I am reluctant to flash anything 4.2.2, because I don't want to have to worry if the things I need my phone to do for both work and personal use is going to work. I have to say, I would love to flash a couple AOSP roms, they look like they are making progress on the bugs by leaps and bounds, but until I can "count" on 99% of my phone working without issue..... Ima sticking to touchwiz based roms.
I prefer TW because of two main reasons.
1. Group texting
2. Better radio
With AOSP based roms, I get a constant roaming message at home. I don't get service here and have a network extender. Don't have this roaming issue with TW based stuff.
Group texting just doesnt work on AOSP. Yes I have the settings for group texting checked and all that I've read states that group texting works in 4.2.2 but I surely haven't seen it work.

[q] stock rom better?

I just had a brand new GS3 and have been playing with it quite a lot these past days
I've done many things such as root it, download free paid apps with it, used different launchers with it, etc.
But the latest thing I did, to see what all the fuss was about was to upgrade my GS3 to Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly
I mean a lot of people are doing it so I thought it was all good, well at least at the beginning it seemed to be
I have to say at first glance it seemed like a great deal for me, having a spanking new lockscreen, notification bar, overall stock phone and messaging applications, and a sleek looking camera
Everything looked fine, until I tried out many of the new stuff out...
First of all the new camera was pretty ok but had one major drawback for me, the HDR mode
You see in the original GS3 ROM the cameras HDR mode was like lightning, you wouldn't notice that it takes separate photos to make the unified, balanced exposure photo
While in the new camera you can notice a time delay of something like .2-.5 seconds between each photograph that the camera takes in order to make you new HDR photo
The result? a badly stitched photo because of shaky hands. And even using "great" paid camera apps produced the same results
Next in the phone application itself, it looked nice and dandy until I noticed that the option for video calling totally disappeared...
And can I say video calling is by far one of my most used things in my GS3 if not the most after the texting and normal calls
I mean hey, I can make a video call anytime anywhere without internet isn't that awesome?!?
Well actually those two are my only real problems... the others could be the disappearance of my stock Samsung apps such as S Note or S Memo but those can be easily replaced with similar apps from the Play Store, and of course what other stock Samsung apps that dissapeared were the Samsung App store, S Voice, etc. which I liked to have been taken out
That said the Cyanogenmod ROM for me looked more like a launcher with added features but nothing else more, it did not have much of it's own "original" apps and that was kind of okay I guess
BUT MY CONCLUDING QUESTION IS
are all custom ROMs like this? will they all overwrite my beautiful video calling and camera capabilities or was it just the Cyanogenmod ROM?
I'm looking up into other ROMs like "Universe S4 ROM" or "Imperium ROM" for my GS3 and just wanted to know before I either invest a good amount of time or just waste it if those ROMs will or will not take out the bad and add mroe good to my GS3 especially the "Universe S4 ROM" since it said that it will add apps that are exclusive to the GS4 like the S Translate.
Thanks in advance for the replies!
CM and camera is a well posted problem .
You have to do some research first then decide if what the custom rom offers outweighs the bugs .
The S4 apps are a work in progress some work 100% some fail others have bugs that developers try and solve .
You would be better to stick with a stock rooted rom or even a bare bones stock custom Samsung rom .

Thank you very much for this!
I'm still wondering if there are custom ROMs that still have the video call and camera the GS3 or are my only options really those bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs? If so where can I look to have an easier time finding those types of ROMs I need?
And is an GS4 ROM one of those stock rooted ROM or bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs that you're talking about or is it a totally different ROM already that doesn't have the video call and camera that I'm looking for?
Because I see all of these ROMs and their offers but I don't know where to look within the forums to know if they do or do not have the two simple aspects that I'm looking for.

Can I still make standard Samsung/Android video calls with this one and is the S4 camera that comes with this as good (or better) than the S3 camera?
I really do hope it does and I'll give it a shot!

By default, this ROM comes with S3 camera. You can find the S4 camera in Aroma. But the S4 camera is quite buggy, video recording some other functions are not wroking yet. Henry is trying his best to make it work. I would reccomend you to try Glamour S4 ROM. Brilliantly smooth and excellent.
In my opinion, cyanogenmod is the most overrated rom in the android. Just a little speed improvement and lots of missing features and problems.
You should try roms based on samsung roms.

Thank you!
I do wish to try out ROMs based on Samsung ROMs
I'd like to ask what ROMs would those be?
Or at least what or where should I search to know if the ROMs would be Samsung based?
Are there indicators?
