2 small issues? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello all,
I have had my note II for about 2 weeks now. I absolutely love the phone! However, I've noticed two issues that are sort of small now, but I am worried that they could grow larger soon.
1. LTE drops. This isn't often, but it does happen sometimes. I found a thread with people talking about this, but never really found an answer. I don't lose LTE, but I just drop to 3G. I thought it would be because of where I was, but when I looked at my mother's iPhone, and my dad's note II, they both had LTE. These drops only last for 10 minutes max, but it is worrysome.
2. Reboots! This is something new. I had quite a lot with my bolt, and hoped it would dissappear with this phone. While researching help with my LTE drops not twenty minutes ago, my phone randomly went dark, and the samsung boot logo appeared. Has this happened to anyone? I don't want this turning into my bolt!

LTE has been great for me and I haven't had any reboots, I'd recommend wiping (and installing a ROM), CleanROM & Beans are both based on stock, so you get all the features and maximum performance.

1. I too experience random LTE drops down to 3G every once in awhile. It hasn't happened since I installed Jelly'Beans' ROM but on stock it happened a few times.
2. Haven't had a random reboot yet. Did once have to do a battery pull due to running profile 5G of the Perseus Kernel. My CPU can't take those low voltages.

From my experience, neither one of these is normal, nor acceptable on the Gnote 2. And they are not small issues. I would request a replacement.

I work in a heavy congested area and I believe Verizon towers get overloaded. I have solid 4G in the morning or at night, but during lunch time it almost always becomes slow and drops to 3G or even 1X. My coworker who sits next to me has an iPhone 5 and sees the same thing happen (I have an HTC DNA btw, sneaking into N2 forum). So basically Verizon selling too many 4G phones may be your culprit.

From what my friend told me (vzw business rep) less than 10% of the Rezounds have these problems and some of the problems are caused by current problems in the 4G network.
No software release by htc at this time.
I would get the phone replaced at a vzw store where you can play with the phone to see if it works like it should.

Haven't had a random reboot yet.
No WiFi problems.
What do you mean by "connection hiccups"? I can't think of anything that would come close to what I think you mean.
No random apps closing.
Battery is in line with other HTC phones. Sense is just a battery hog. Wait for S-OFF and custom kernels and you'll see leaps and bounds of battery improvements.
I have none of the reported issues...
I am shocked at how long the battery lasts... 20% better than my old TB after ROMS and Kernel tweaks.
I agree, I get battery life than my TBolt did and have not had any of the problems listed above.

I haven't had any of these issues either. Have you tried a factory reset yet? It's relatively easy to do and could possibly help if you are having issues with apps and random reboots.
If that doesn't help definitely return it and get a new one. Hopefully the issues will not continue.
The battery life is going to depend on each person's location.
I got 30 hours when I was at home over the weekend, and 8 hours when I spent the day at the university. The reason being signal strength. I didn't use it any more than I did at home.
Also if you are in a low signal area the phone strains to get the data signal resulting in battery overheating and browser problems.

no random reboot issues here... the GF's tbolt is another story though that thing is awful.
Radio would be nice - i frequently go in and out of 4g areas and the radio does have a tough time picking which one to use.
The rest of the issues noted I haven't seen at all!
for me:
video playback occassionally goes out of sync
while headphones/aux is plugged in and nothing is playing(or at low volume) there's this static/hiss sound
phone gets really hot often(and when it goes over 100F the battery depletes quicker
screen is incredibly sensitive and keeps thinking I'm tapping on things that I'm not
have weird random browser lag(regardless of browser) where ill select something and nothing will happen... then after like 10 - 15sec, the new page suddenly pops up
those are my 'regular' issues. I've only had the phone reboot by itself once & the battery was super hot then. also, I will get FC's here & there but its not common.
I still blame sense/bloatware
[EDIT]: I forgot to mention that sometimes if I go to a 3G area, it will not go back to 4G on its own. ill have to manually turn the radio off/on, then it kicks back into 4G

i was actually impressed with the radio on the phone, maybe thats because i updated from a samsung fascinate which fascinated me as to how bad the radio was, excuse the bad pun
guys, open tickets with HTC and complain about your problems. t hat's the ONLY way they're gonna find out, besides seeing a high exchange rate! let's tell them EXACTLY what's wrong! my open ticket is about the crappy mic recording in the video mode, and i also brought up light leak and the background noise with music. they've escalated me to another hihger support team whos gonna contact me wtihin a week
Ditto on being impressed with the radio. I get -75db in the same metal building in which my hTC EVO 4G could muster -90db at best. The external antenna on the battery cover really do the trick.
Never had a random reboot or force close.
No problems with WiFi (except that LTE is so fast I never want to connect to my home internet!)
I get 8-10 hrs from the batt, on Performance mode, connected to 4G and heavy use. Picked up a spare battery to take me through the evening after I swap it after work.
My stock browser has always crashed occasionally, my incredible did it when it was stock and rooted and my rezound does it exactly the same way, its a software problem. I have had 2 random reboots so far not enough to complain. Other than that great, love this phone.
The only problem I have had is my phone not connecting to 4g but I think juice defender was the problem.

What someone with some time needs to do is get a digital petition up on the forums with phones having these problems ( Inc, TBolt, Rezound etc.) and try to get several thousand signatures to send to HTC because VZW doesn't care. That might get htc to do a software fix.

Thought it wouldn't matter but.....

Austin just got LTE and my boss just got the skyrocket. Screen seems about the same from what I saw but performance stock wise the ogsII was much faster but internet was smoking. I keep hearing that a rooted and romed skyrocket performs just as good so now the decision to keep the ogsII just got tougher. Anyone else in their 30 day window and considering jumping ship?
Nope.

Galaxy S II
I had my GSII then switched to the SR for a few weeks. Honestly I like the size of my i777 much better than the SR. I couldn't notice much difference in performance but dev support was another huge factor for me.
Really they're both great devices... just happy to be away from ios once and for all.

ok, thanks for the replies!!
Is there anyway to get better dl/up speed on the ogsII? On the inspire, there were many different radios and APNs that one could use to get good bandwidth. If I could get consistantly get 5mbps down, i'd be more than content.
You could try flashing a different modem. There's a thread in the development section.
There are some TCP buffer tweaks in my kernel that might help.
The only thing the SR has to offer is faster data when it's actually working - which is apparently not something you can count on with the SR, I've been seeing lots of reports of problems with data dropping and poor battery performance.
Just flashed kj1 with your keranl entropy but I still don't see the speed my inspire used to get. I could get 4 down consistently on the inspire but only see 2 down on gs2

battery life is pretty bad (like 4-6% an hour idle, 10+% with light usage)
i have not had ANY network connectivity problems, but what is the common factor in those complaining of network loss? do they have LTE in their area, or are they strictly on fauxg?

dont forget, i am in an LTE area, i have my wifi off and running touchdown for my exchange email (set to poll every 10 minutes)
i have had much better battery life from my OG GS2, running unnamed rom with the same setup, aside from LTE of course.
if you live in an LTE area and want LTE, go skyrocket, if you dont live in an LTE area or expect to get it in the coming months, go OG GS2.
aside from the battery life (which doesnt matter much to me since i always have chargers handy) its a good phone, despite what others here feel about it.
it is true, that its not as fast in benchmarks, but after loading up my own custom rom on my skyrocket, it can hang with my GS2 running unnamed in usage, but it flies when it comes to downloading/browsing the web. i like the physical feel of the OG GS2 better too. if i didnt have LTE in my area, i wouldnt have the skyrocket, lol.

I have an inspire and the gs2 is always faster with data here. Mostly because it gets way better reception. I lived in tribalart's radio thread flashing radio/ril combo's trying to get that damn thing to have a decent signal. It isn't the phone either because i have have 2 inspires, one early build the other a late nd they both suck signal strength wise.
I do notice that the speetest app is way off on my gs2 but in the site it's right

I had the SR for about a week. Living in a non-LTE area, I found the battery to be weak. I could stretch it out to 18 hours if I only used the phone for reading email, but as soon as I started using the phone as a phone, tried to do any web browsing, or just playing around, then battery life dropped.
With the SII, I can stretch to 36 hours with only email reading, and easily go 18 to 24 while actually using the phone for phone calls and whatever else I have the silly thing for.
The screen resolution thing is really not an issue. Compare the PPI with your computer monitor and you might suddenly stop seeing "jagged" characters on your phone (or you'll never stop seeing them on your computer monitor.)
Physical size was a minor annoynace (but an annoyance still) for me. The SR just barely went over the threshold of being comfortable for me. (Of course, I'd get over that if I could have a Note.)
CIQ is/was a big deal for me. I can not and will not support a device that contains that rootkit, even if I can remove it. The ONLY way I have to influence AT&T is with my money, and by returning a CIQ device (SR) and buying a non-CIQ device (SII), I've given the strongest message I can (short of terminating my service.)

[Q] Slow to boot, and a question about 4G battery use

I'm 100% stock. I had to reboot my phone after being in a dead zone with no service, and it seemed like it took forever to boot up. I just timed it, and it took over 3 minutes to boot up, which seems pretty slow in my opinion.
Is this normal? I don't recall it being that slow shortly after I got it.
Are there "non-root" things I can do to speed up boot time?
Fast boot is checked.
Now my 4g question. I live in 3g land, and haven't been anywhere where there is 4g coverage yet. I'm going on vacation, and most likely will be bouncing between 3 and 4g. What should I expect? Any tips or suggestions to make sure I'm not fighting with a dead battery while trying to enjoy my vacation?
I have also been having extremely long boot times like you. But I am rooted and I noticed it after I added all of my apps. Do you have a kit of apps downloaded too?
Sent from my rooted HTC Rezound
I don't think that I have an overabundance of apps. There are currently 121 apps on my phone. Not sure how many of these are preinstalled by HTC and Verizon.
Seems to sit on the 4G LTE splash screen for quite some time.
Is there anything like msconfig on Windows to see what is starting up on boot?
i don't have long boot times, i just have a good 10-15 second delay before my phone shuts off or restarts, first ive ever seen this from any htc device.

How Often Do You Reboot?

I was just wondering. I find that after about a week without rebooting, the phone becomes a little jittery. How often do you guys reboot?
Once in a week probably. I didn't even noticed!

If I reboot it's because I'm flashing a rom or my battery died. lol
Rarely on galaxy phones, I remember on my old galaxy s ii i kept track of my uptime for fun, reached something like 700 hours, which is like almost 30 days was amazed that the phone didnt randomly reboot or something. Samsung phones are always so stable on stock roms.

Worst galaxy ever?

On paper this is the best galaxy s ever, we all know that, but I have had this phone for 2 weeks now, and I have had the worst android experience on any phone, I had owned every phone on the galaxy s line since the beginning.
I haven't seen any phone with more lags or software flaws than this one.
To begin, the wakeup lag, sometimes more than 10 secs for the phone to wakeup.
The sd card read/write lag, I change my sd card to a Samsung top notch one, and the lag is still noticeable.
Memory issues, I recreates thisnissues in may ways, open up a game (plants vs zombies 2) play for a couple of mins, lock the phone, and see if you can weke it up.
I noticed a bit more smotthnes after the updatw but still the performance on this phone is just awful.
I hope this is an isolated issue, but I have seen a lot of people complaining about the lag as well.

Yes, it might be a "T-Mobile" version problem, I am pretty sure this are software related problems, I would like to see it running on a vanilla version of android, it has to be TouchWiz messing it up, but anyway, this had to be thoroughly tested before releasing it to the public, shame on T-Mobile/Samsung, hope a fix is on the way.

Try using the international stock roms. On the S4, those were MUCH better that the US version roms. I know it requires rooting, but you'll probably be happier and it doesn't really matter if you're outside your return period anyway.

Great phone, no issues, where did you buy yur phones?
I've had the phone for a while now and it hasn't lagged once, the fingerprint scanner works over 90% of the time, and signal is good as well. Yeah, the HR monitor is a total gimmick, but to say this phone is "the worst galaxy" is a bit extreme.
So either I got extremely lucky and got 2 phones without any problems, or some people are getting unlucky with their purchase.

Sometimes, no matter what I've tried, I'll be using the phone and let the screen turn off, When I push the home button, nothing, the phone is still running but I can't see anything, I try to use the power button and again nothing, I have to pull the battery and restart the phone to get it working. There is a group of people that are experiencing the problem and at first people thought it may be SD card related but it is not conclusive at this point. It will work fine sometimes for days, then all of a sudden pull the above mentioned crap.
Exactly, onlast Sunday every time I locked the screen it would never wakeup, I had to remove the battery like 3 times, it has been OK for the las 2 days though, but this is frustrating, I mean, I haven't even rooted the phone yet, I read that 4.4.3 is on its way, hope that addresses these performance issues.

Yes I agree this phone is very laggy specially the camera they send me a "new" phone and the problem still there, also i usually charge it at night
and this morning the screen was on the boot screen logo i had to remove the battery it sucks
So, I keep researching the reasons of why some of us have this issues, today I went to the "t-mobile my account" app, went to options and deselected all the options (ALL OF THEM), and I notice the fun is a lot smoother, probably the placebo effect, but I will keep trying for a couple of days, if you guys want give it a try.

I've only had the phone for about a week but it's amazing so far, I upgraded from a S2. I play Ingress constantly and lately I've been able to play for 4+ hours at a time before needing to recharge and that's just on the stock battery. I removed all the bloatware I could and turned most everything off just to try and squeeze out every little bit of battery life. The only thing bugging me about the phone so far is that root would void my warranty and I'm a little upset about that but meh, it's not like I ever needed it I'm just a little worried because the phone is so new. I might just wait until the 12 months is up and root the phone then. So far I don't really have a reason to need root but I'm sure that desire will gain in traction as new tools for the device get released. I'm mostly thinking about mods like Cyagenmod, that will be one of the reasons I root and break Knox if I do before the warranty.
