Hey,, I recently got my galaxy s2 and im new in the android thing,, i want to flash my phone to litening rom but im worried that i might brick it,, what are the chances that i may brick my phone? tnx and more power
The risk is very small as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Read from start to finish a few times before doing anything and double check everything. It's actually all very easy and straightforward
Edit: and have a look at the thread about backing up your EFS folder before flashing (you'll need root) it's in the dev section somewhere.

But how hard is it to really brick a SGS2 ?
I think i read about 1 person who couldnt get his phone up and running again .
SGS2 i belive is really hard to brick.
Sorry for my bad english
There are enough who totally brick a phone in the course of a year . But its hard to do plenty of oh hell moments but recovered flashing stock rom .
Brick tends to be a misused term SGS brick means it should work after flashing stock rom via odin . Other phones brick means dead phone return to factory no hope .

As long as you never tick "Re-Partition" and insert the PIT in Odin its almost imposable to brick unless you somehow nuke the bootloader(which you shouldn't be able todo via flashing custom roms).
I dont even think theres much of a chance of radio bricks, worst that happens is that you have to re-flash.

I think once the radio is corrupted a new flash is impossible, well it is on HTC devices

As long as one of the (secondary) bootloaders is still intact and you can get into download-mode (maybe by using the USB jig), then yes.

If the service centre can't fix (when I sent mine to one they told me it was beyond economic repair) don't lose hope as this guy will probably be able to repair it for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1602851
Ended up being cheaper than if my local service centre had been able to repair it too.
Being new to flashing I was also very scared at the start. I was pulling my hair out when the first time I flashed a new rom and got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I backed up the entire system and I was able to restore.
Make sure you do a back up of your system first.
The first time its scary, I had no nails after the first flash lol. But after that its fun, just make sure to read everything and follow the instructions to the letter.
Good Luck!!
Sim card not recognized
I have rooted by galaxy s2 and my phone fails to recognize the sim card and unfortunately I didn't backup my original rom to restore the previous settings
I tried various things: hard reset, install alternative (custom) roms all seem to have no effect on the sim card.
I am getting quite frustrtated with this, is there an original ROM for my location (GREECE, VODAFONE) to try with odin ? I should note that my mobile seems not to connect with the PC when I try to connect it via kies (odin works instead)
Is there a possibility that the phone's card sensors are physically damaged, thus return it for repairs ?
Thanks for your time

A JTAG repair is the only thing that can fix it I believe.
SGS2 - Download mode but no recovery
Hi!
I have a bit of a problem here as well when i was trying to flash back to the stock firmware. Now when I try to get to the clockwork recovery mod, I get the famous dead screen with symbols of mobile phone, exclamation point and a pc. I have been searching solution to this problem for hours now, and still I don't want to quit.
My previous custom rom was installed in with no problems. Litening rom 3.0.
Now, with usb jig i can get into the download mode, no problem there. It just seems that the traffic is just jammed.
Download mode works but Odin doesn't transfer anything. Gets stuck on the factoryfs.img while i'm trying to flash. Kies doesn't recognize the phone but pc recognizes the USB device with no problem. Original stock firmware doesn't load on the phone. Odin just stops transferring.
Things I've tried so far.
-Reflash (both litening rom again and stock firmware) with odin (Kies is not on while I do this, I checked)
-Kies (doesn't work)
-Download mode does work but it seems that phone doesn't accept any files.
-I tried the one-click unbrick which seemed to do something god but failed at the end.
What could I still try? I'm running out of options now.
I apologize for my bad english.

insert the sim properly with the golden plates down and the cut end outward. Then go to settings>>>wireless>>> untick the flight mode.
I think it's broken
Try reflashing back with the original stock rom.
It looks to me the baseband is not installed properly, and therefore unable to access IMEI, without a working baseband, you are unable to access the phone portion.
It could also be that the nv_data.bin file is damaged due to a bad sim unlock hack. If that is so, you will have to rebuild that file.
Again, try reflashing back to original stock rom, before trying to rebuild the nv_data.bin.
(Sorry to resurrect old-ish topic, but I think it's better to continue here than to make a new one.)
Same problem here, except the only custom thing I've ever run on this phone, is apps from market. I'm running SPB Shell 3D (legal version, but not through Android Market but the other thing SPB was selling their programs through... Handango? Not that it matters.)
The phone has been running ALMOST perfectly since day one. I can only remember two occasions that the phone was in "no reception" mode (the O with slash through it) and toggling Flight Mode on and then off fixed it both times before.
However, yesterday I noticed the icon again, thought nothing of it and switched Flight Mode on. It never went back on again. Googling the problem I bumped into the imei/baseband thing and sure as not, when checking my phone's data there is "unknown" in the baseband version and IMEI is empty.
Trying to enter Mobile Networks settings results in "insert sim" notification.
The phone is (OS-wise) completely stock, I think the only thing I have ever done to it since then was to update it to 2.3.5 via KIES when it became available.
Phone is unbranded and not simlocked and never was. The only alterations are the aforementioned SPB Shell 3D and WidgetLocker. And of course a bunch of "normal" apps, games and such.
I placed a call (which went unanswered for all it matters), then after a short while (five minutes or so) noticed the "no reception" -icon. Then all went to hell.
Tried with three different SIM cards, none work on this phone, all work on other phones. Currently SIM working in Galaxy Gio.
I plan to take the phone to repairs under warranty, I'll let you know what they say and what happens to the phone if I remember.
help!

READ the restore IMEI restore EFS posts but first backup data and try a factory reset .

In my case, it was perhaps a bit more extreme. I sent it to the repair shop under warranty, it came back practically new. They had changes most of the innards, including the motherboard. Something had apparently shorted itself and cleared some chip. Hadn't gotten anything more specific out of them and I've even sold the phone since then and got this Galaxy Note.

just a precaution.....alwayz backup ur efs a tool is hell kat tool which backs up ur efs folder as image....so any prblm such as diff pcode, imei etc can b restored within sec...always save ur efs folder on pc...an certain apps like root exp etc work on rooted phones..i messed alot wiv my sgs1 an sgs2 but thanks to the developers for creating this great tools....
I have a similar issue with my SGS2
I ran my phone battery until it died and when I rebooted the no-network sign came up.
Now, it show's no baseband, no imei and if I dial *#1234# it shows up as Phone: Unknown
(I think it used to say GT-I9100)
I had a backup efs img and files from way back, and restored that several times along with a factory reset and tried installing different modems both original and others.
It's looking pretty bad.
Any thoughts on what else I can try to diagnose this before I send it back?
TIA, Daniel
Ok guys! This is simple, i bought this GS2 from a friend a couple days ago. He told me the phone had no IMEI and since i have seen this before on other Galaxy S variations and have been able to fix it i thought it was a good buy. Thing is i didnt realize how hard it was going to be to fix that. He tried to unlock that phone who knows how and it completely messed up the efs folder. I have tried the 9 step Imei restore method and some other tricks with no luck. Problem with this phone is that it doesnt even have a dummie imei number. In fact, not even zeros, just nothing when i try to check for an imei number. Any suggestions for this. Or should i just look for someone to buy the lcd and dump the motherboard to the trash?? Thanks!
Without a backup of the original, working EFS folder you are probably more or less stuck. I've been in the same situation before and ended up having to get the phone replaced.
Contact a member on here called Odia via PM. He is sometimes able to recover IMEI's/EFS details when everything else has failed (for a small donation). If everything else you've tried hasn't worked, that's probably your last chance.
Yep odia said corrupt efs was no problem to fix.

Here's the only fix I know of for a galaxy s2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY9cDkj4CCw! If it works, make sure to make multiple backups of your efs folder on sd card/pc/drop box etc!!
You can view your efs folder using the Root explorer app!!
Here's the download link for the galaxy s2 kTool fix: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool&hl=en Good luck!
If all else fails, your only other option is here: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-imei-efs-repair/
You can try to fix the efs partition following this guide : forum.samdroid.net/f70/repair-imei-s2-5729/
You'll probably get a generic IMEI after that, then contact the guy he will set back your original IMEI. I had exacly the same problem and it worked !
Wow guys thanks a lot for all those replies! Ill keep in touch and tell you how it goes!
Thank for your help jje, I've tried many methods but none of them seem to be working. (Done factory reset, installed CWM recovery, wiped caches, adb shell) I've a feeling that this phone needs a main board as well. He's got insurance for his phone so at this point, I think, it's not worth the hassle anymore.

[email protected], even changing almost any galaxy S lcd is not worth it when it breaks. Have you seen the prices of those lcd replacement screens? We do it for the sake of learning. Although in this case you might be right, because just like your phone this one doesnt even have a baseband showing. But still im pretty shure its a software and not hardware issue. This is about something that went really wrong while unlocking or trying to do something like that with it. Too bad i dont even know what happened with this one. No efs backup or anything
What actually happened is my friend went into this badly network covered area, lost the signal and he was back to a place again, where is a strong network coverage the phone just would not log on and stuck in flight mode.
So my s2 was on gingerbread rom and I decided to flash 4.1.2 via odin. Phone booted up and asks for sim unlock code. I learnt then that it locked the phone. I used Galaxy_S unlock https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS5oZWxyb3ouZ2FsYXh5c3VubG9jayJd
but it didn't work so I restored the efs. Then I tried this Galaxsim http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846451 and it says unlocked so rebooted phone but when making or receiving phone calls, it disconnects. The paid version from play I havent tried but Im guessing will be the same?
Imei still shows so Im not sure what I have done wrong.
I have efs backup from both of those apps and also a efs.autobackup in the root of internal storage date in January. Not sure how that got there as this phone had GB over a year.
Please help
Do you get any signal at all?
The paid version won't help as this could be a modem issue.

Yes there is signal, data connection works. I then tried reflashing GB, restored GB backup, flashed ICS and same problem
i got today the galaxy s3 lte i9305 version, anyway while trying to flash with cf root, after finishing the screen goes blue and then black..later on dicovered that touch is no longer working, and the menu button works as back and the back button works as menu lol, and also i lost the efs, because i hadnt backup it yet, \
in all cases after a lot of search i read that some one wrote that the touch digitizer is damaged.....
i continue working with mouse over usb otg, triangle away, reset counter, and it was reseted successfully, current binary samsung official but system status is custom........flashed 3 stock roms with wipping and everything man can do to make system status official, but no luck....\
any help i can fix this so i can take tomorrow for waranty and so on ?? please tell me what to do
I had the same problem (with the system status) and I figured out that only Triangle Away 2.37 would turn it to official. Newer versions wouldn`t do this for some weird reason. Try it maybe it works for you too. Attached TA 2.37 to attachments

Why would you want to restore your efs folder. Is it missing right now on your device? I thought your problems lie elsewhere (Digitizer)?

first of all thanks for the triangle away version it works and now i can send it to warranty
what happened is during the root and installing the rom, the touch stopped working and still till now, and there is no signal for sim card, there is the sign like stop instead of signal bar, so i went to efs folder to check it there is nothing in it, so now it cant be registered on network and when dialing *#06# it give null/null
but ill try nothing more, just wanna send it to repair, and i guess ill get a new phone, since the touch is so hard to be replaced, and with no efs, they have to replace the mainboard, so new phone is easier for them
Yeah I think so too. Just send it in for repair. Good luck, glad that it worked.
Hi guys my S3 GT-i9300 is stuffed and i have to take it to samsung to be repaired now i dont want a new motherboard and im guessing cuz its an expensive job thats what i will be told needs doing-makes them more money than simply reflashing OS EFS and Modem.
If i only want the above mentioned re flashed/repaired and ask for just that verbatim, will it make sense to the guys at Samsung and is it the correct thing to ask for
What ive done is root the fone, not backup the efs folder, delete lots of important folders(including efs) thinking i was getting rid of previous os install clutter (now the phone wont connect to carrier wifi wont work and imie is different to one on sticker when *#06#)
So i have a fone that looks perfect with the latest Australian firmware installed on it now but cant connect to any carrier in my case amaysim.
I have tried various efs repair guides and proceedures but none are working for me so i dont need help with ways to fix efs i just need to know if i will be asking the samsung guys for the correct repairs to make my fone useable again.
Many thanks
Octapus Box should i buy to repair imie will it work
Hi there guys
SG S3 GT-i9300
I have a problem with my fone not registering on the network and my imie has changed from the sticker to a random number and have been forced to take the phone to samsung to get it repaired
Have tried all the guides on forum to repair restore reflash imie and none are working for me. I have latest firmware PDA australian installed on my s3 now and still cant get carrier registration or connect to my home wifi
can octopus box fix the problem i'm encountering now?
PS
if it turn out it can fix the problem i will buy one and help anyone near me free cuz this problem is way too common and there are plenty like me that rushed in without thinking and reading-so if you need help pm me in a couple of weeks gonna order it if reply to my question turns out to be yes

Just got my fone back from samsung and they only charged me an inspection fee which was cool-that said i could've had it done free if i had reset the binary counter to zero with the program "triangle away" but being the einstein i am i couldn't connect to my home wifi (wrong password entered lol) but i thort i couldn't connect cuz my fone was playing up (wrong modem installed). wasnt that...it was me!
They installed the latest firmware for me and reflashed my imie so that it matched the one under the battery-Now what perplexed me with that is that i took the fone to three different phone repair shops in the shopping mall near me, and none of those guys could fix the imie. I'm rather confident that the dudes in these mall phone shops have things like octopus box and Z3X boxes etc-why on earth couldn't they do what samsung did?
Anyone got any ideas does Samsung have special software that no one else can get their hands on or what?

Wat if I have no efs backup
Same thing happened to me before. After trying to downgrade my baseband my efs got corrupted (no signal/cant connect to metwork) i have no choice but to bring it to samsung service center they want me to replaced the motherboard.i refused and went to small phone repair shops and they managed to repair/rewrite my efs using the box. Maybe those small repair shops in your country have boxes but dont have the specific type for samsung
