Hi all, did a search but couldn't find anything so hoping you guys can help me out. On my old Droid Bionic, when I sync contacts to my car bluetooth, it shows up as first name last name. Now when I sync, it shows up last name first name. Is there any way to change it back? I don't have the option to change what it shows from the unit. On the phone it shows as first name last name though so I think it's just the way contacts are stored on the phone itself. My really old HTC TP2 had the same problem, and there was a program that was able to fix it. I think it just put the first name first in the file where the contacts are stored so it would show up correctly. Is there a program like that for android? Thanks.
I can't test my theory out, but something be getting reversed between your phone and head unit. In the people tab of the dialer there are settings about how to display the contacts, you may want to try changing those settings.

Hi All,
Just bought hero last week and transferred my contacts from E71 to Hero using Outlook and HTC Sync.
The problem is, People program mixes up the list of my contacts. Here is what I see when I launch it:
My Name
A random set of contacts starting with A to Z
A..
B..
C..
..
..(and so on)
Z..
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with A
A..
..
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with B
B..
..
..(and so on)
- a divider line -
Remaining contacts with Z
..
- a divider line -
Why does Hero shows some contacts without dividing them into alphabet? I have checked that all my contacts are "Phone" contacts and they show up alphabetical in Outlook (and was in E71)
are the random ones at the top just ones with Company names??
I know that happens on mine if i sync across contacts that have nothing in the 'Name' field in outlook, and just a company name instead.
No they are totally similar contacts. All of my contacts has name field and I do not use non-Latin characters. This is actually pretty weird. I'll try to add some screenshots when I get back home..
Thanks for the response

That happened to me as well. I realized that for those contacts, I only had information in "Surname" field (even the first name was written there) thus it would add a space before this info and the space makes those contacts float there. This also applies when you have first name but no surname. HTC Sync sucks. To fix it, you can open these contacts in Outlook, change the name, change it back to original but in first-last name fields, save again, and then click the dropdown "File as" and select something else and select it back to "First, Last name" and then sync again... Something like this

Thanks much man!
This really helped. Since the number of irregular names are limited, I've edited them on the phone.

With Regard to Weird contacts sorting problem with HTC
I had the same problem as leventbb, etc on a brand new HTC Thunderbolt...and the old posts were 2 years ago so apparently HTC hasn't fixed it. For those who run in to this as well, here is wat I found. As much as it seems the contacts are out of order, in my cast it was because there was nothing in the last name field so HTC for some reason, but not in all cases put a space in front of it. So...if I chose to go to the very beginning of my contacts, the order was: those with nothing in any of the name fields, those which I just explaned that show now as having a space in front (only on the card, if you open it up it looks fine); those which start with numbers and then regular A-Z. When I tried copying the first name, delelting it and pasting it back and saving, it went into the correct A-Z place, but then all of a sudden was back in the "wrong" place in front of those contacts starting with numbers (because of the space that is back...). I am assuming it's because the Thunderbolt just synched.
To fix it, I found that by placing my cursor in the Last Name field and using my backspace key, that even though it acts like nothing is there, when I save it, it goes back to it's "right" place in A-Z and stays there.
Hope this helps someone else. It was a real problem when I thought contacts were missing when looking alphabetically, but could find them when I searched...
Hi, I have a weird issue with one of my contacts. An old number they no longer use just won't delete! I Tried to delete the contact altogehter, and add it again, even tried to change the name by adding something extra to it, but whenever I try to text the person, the previous number shows up, THEN the current number (and not just the name of the contact like it should. Something to keep in mind is that the old number does not show up in the actual contacgts directory, ONLY whenever I text them, and it doesn't show their name, which is really REALLY annoying!!! Can anyone help? I tried uninstalling/reinstalling using Titanium Backup, even the data wipe of the messaging app, didn't work! Still doing the same thing, seems like the app won't disassociate the past number from the current, and the weird thing is that I had deleted that number from the contacts long before, when I was still on 2.1 (stock). Now that I have updated to the stock 2.3.3, it brought that number back! Please help, this really sucks and I don't know what to do, don't want to do a repair install, so much work :-( Another issue I found is that the messaging won't sound the notification I set, it does blink the LED light, but won't vibrate or sound the notification I set up for it... What should I do??? Thanks in advance...
sorry just tried merging the posts to my first post, but can't delete this one.
Same as the upper post, sorry again...
I had a similar problem. You can edit your contacts at the actual gmail website from your internet browser. Also remember when adding contacts from phone, click save to gmail and sync contacts every now and then if auto-sync is disabled.
Really? Where do I edit my contacts??? When I check my contacts in Gmail, it only shows me the email contacts I have, no actual phone numbers

At the top right there should be a contacts option, look a bit lower and there should be more options pertaining to it.
I did check that, explored all the options within, and none of my phone contacts show up! Only my email contacts!!! Any other way to handle this??? The sound part seems to have resolved (sometimes it does ring my notification tone), but the messaging app still shows the number I deleted months ago, no idea why it won't disassociate the number. In my contacts list, that number doesn't show. But in messaging, when I try to send that person a meggae, instead of showing the NAME of the person I am sending it to (like it should), it shows the old number and then the new number!!! Any ideas???

It is somehow either associated with your google account or your at&t account, does you at&t plan have an online back up by chance?
I'm actually with Rogers, and have never used their online backup (nor have I checked to see if they provide any). But something rather weird happened, I deleted the messages, asked my friend to send me a text, and when they did, their name showed up like it is supposed to! I hope it is resolved now, thank you all for trying to help
Will update if the problem persists.
I noticed a weird behaviour in my Google Contacts.
I don't know if Google Mail or my Android Phone (Galaxy Nexus with AOKP b30) is to blame.
But from time to time some random contacts seem to rename themselves into my own contact.
So instead of having just my Name once, there are several with my name, E-mail and phonenumber. But in addition to my information there are the different phone numbers that used to belong to other contacts which are then gone.
I tried to rename them manually again.
But after a day or two there are more contacts renamed and altered. I tried to delete all of the renamed contacts including my own, but again after a few days 8 of them kept popping up.
It's pretty annoying because I don't know every name that belongs to a number so often I'm left with just a number not knowing who it belonged to in the first place.
I searched for a similar issue but couldn't really find one. If there is a thread allready I'd be thankful if you pointed me in that direction if not I'd appreciate an help I can get.
Thanks!

I just had this happen on my galaxy s3 too.. very strange.. today is the first day it happened so i don't know if it will be a re-occurring problem or not (hope not though)
It is a feature of "People" which joins contacts. Issue 4979
Wish there was a way to disable it - totally unwanted as it joins unrelated contacts and I then can't find contacts because they have been merged with other random contacts - at least I can separate them when they are located, however the feature was not wanted in the first place.
can we find the code which implements this automerge functionality may be by decompiling into smali or getting source code for contactprovider or something m not sure and make a mod for the issue since it been long time google is not responding to issue.
Hi everyone from Greece,
I would appreciate your help with my problem.
I am an owner of Galaxy s2 simply rooted with 4.0.3 xwlp7.I use exDialer instead of stock and eventhow all my contacts are set correctly where they should be-meaning first name in the first name box,the same with last name-when i receive a call the first name appears first followed by the last name, which i want the opposite.
All the settings in exDialer as well as in stock app are correct-dispay order by last name, appearence by last name first, when i search for a contact it displays correct by the last name but when i get a call.....first name first...
I have tried everything but with no result..I forgot to mention that my contacts are Google contacts
Thanks in advance..

IMO, this is a "feature" of the dialer app.
It receives the caller's number and makes a lookup into your contacts.
There it gets the first and last name information and displays the name.
If you can not find an option to change the order of the caller's name display, you may not be able to change this setting ... and have to try another dialer app, which supports such an option.
As I am using the stock dialer, and this doesn't have such an option either, I can not suggest a better dialer app ... sorry !
Thanks, but is it possible in my previus phone(galaxy s) everything to be in order and know in a better phone.....
Do you suggest to switch the order in the contacts and where it says''first name'' try putting last name and vice versa;
I tried searching the net, but everything I can find relates to MM or earlier. I definitely fixed this issue when I first got this phone, so that only people with numbers were shown in my contacts list. Now I upgraded to Nougat just a few hours ago, and now I can't figure out how to do that again. That option doesn't seem to exist anymore! Am I missing something?? Or did they remove this option from the stock Contacts and Phone apps?
This is absurd. Pulling up Contacts shows a huge list of everyone I've ever interacted with over email, which is beyond stupid, imo. If I need to reach some person via email whom I don't text/call, then that's what the Gmail app is there for. What's the point of this mess? Sorry about the mini rant.
Same Problem
Same Phone, Same Problem, Same Question?!
I'm convinced now that, yes, Google really did think that a dysfunctional Contacts app is what the people want. So, the only solution here is to switch to third party apps. Oh well, not a big deal I guess.
I found a work around, create a new label in contacts and all the contacts with numbers to that label. Then you can customise the view on your phone to display only that label. If you ever add any contacts in the future with a phone number just ensure you add them to that label which you can do via your phone.
