I have not been to XDA in a while as I have been very happy with VeganTab on my GTab. Now I would like to try out a JB ROM but a couple of them do not say wht boot loader they are for. is it a safe assumption that they all require BL1.2? Are there no ROMs anymore for BL1.1?

The TeamDRH kernel which is what all the ICS and JB ROMs use, doesn't care about the bootloader version-1.1 or 1.2. So, you can run JB or ICS ROMs on either bootloader.
However. most of these newer ROMs need an expanded /system partition to hold the ROM files, so they have a "prep" step which uses nvflash to enlarge the system partition on the NAND. This prep step involves re-writing the entire NAND which necessarily means also writing a new bootloader version. So, after the prep step, you will be on a 1.2 bootloader.
You can stay on your 1.1 bootloader and still expand the system partition if you so wish by editing the gtablet.cfg in one of the 1.1 nvflash img packages. Note that the kernel in the CWM recovery images still care about the bootloader version because they use the older kernel.
Simpler to just use the already existing prep files.

Hi there
First, I know that it might be a stupid question, but I'm new to Android.
I've read about the official unlocking method HTC offers and yesterday I tried it out, worked all fine.
But what has changed? What can I do now which I couldn't before? I don't get it! Can I flash ROMs now? How?
I can only see that it now says "UNLOCKED" at the top of the bootloader. Also, I've read about Clockwork-Mod and TW and so on, so I tried to "install" Clockwork-Mod. Failed. Now it crashes when trying to open "Recovery" in bootloader.
But main question: What can I do now, with unlocked phone?
Thanks! And don't laugh about my English... I've tried my best
Install TWRP recovery, there is a sticky in the dev section. Then you can indeed flash ROMs however since you are s-on still you will have to flash a bit differently. Search the dev section for joeykrim's flash image gui. It has all the instructions you need to flash a custom rom.
A little further explaination, since you are still s-on the kernels don't flash correctly unless you flash using fastboot or joeys gui. If you don't flash this way you can end up in a bootloop or have broken wifi and 4g etc.

New to Android ... One of these days I should put together a guide from start to finish.
Here are a few more details in addition to the great answer already provided in the above post. A link to my applciation, Flash Image GUI, which makes loading custom kernels a little bit simplier and possible without a computer attached to the device.
There are basically three partitions we look to commonly customize on the Android device, boot, recovery and system. Of course, there are times when we customize or upgrade other partitions but they aren't as common or as required.
Boot holds the booting kernel.
Recovery holds the recovery kernel and recovery binary.
System holds the android system.
On many HTC devices, some or all of these partitions are locked by the bootloader which is essentially a very low level write protection.
The s-off revolutionary method removes write protection on all partitions.
The HTC unlock method removes write protection on some partitions and also depends on the mode the device is booted into. This is the first time HTC has made an official unlock method through their stock bootloader. Who knows if they will improve it in the future by unlocking all partitions or if they still stick to their current model.
Hope that helps a bit more background/history to the context! Good luck!
Sorry for the noob question, but do these ROMs require the phone to be rooted?
Yes, all ROM's require the phone to be rooted.
yo
Start out with HTC Unlock. Lots of info on this site about it.
Then install a custom rom. It will already be Rooted,
After you've learned more, then you make it S-0ff.
Then you can go backward and forward in radio and other
options without worries.

Wrong. You don't need root. You need to unlock the boot loader. All instructions for that are in HTCDev.com
you need to Unlock your bootloader first in order to flash a Recovery like CWM or AmonRA which will then allow you to flash/install rooted roms.
Note: if you are on Gingerbread and are going to flash an ICS rom, PLEASE download the required kernel they provide for you to flash as well as the ICS rom. but kernels are flashed through the bootloader/hboot and not in recovery. unless your S-off. if your'e S-on, flash kernels in bootloader.
Hi all, back when the unlock was released for this phone I installed a custom GB rom on my brother's phone. I am very experienced.with flashing and rooting etc so this wasn't a problem. Now with S-Off things have gotten a bit more complicated, not to mention the mainver nonsense I've been reading about. To make matters worse I haven't found a good thread outlining all these details on what needs to be done for the transition from GB to ICS; everyone basically assumes you're already on ICS and either S-On or S-Off.
So I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can answer.
1. I want to keep my brother's phone S-On. I have reviewed the S-Off method and deem it too risky for hardware that is not my own. That said, what's the best path to getting to a custom ICS OTA based rom from GB firmware?
a. Should I flash stock GB, relock phone, install OTA, unlock phone, install custom ICS rom?
b. Should I directly install a certain firmware from the boot loader along with a custom ICS OTA based rom from recovery? If so, which firmware should I flash? Is there any mainver stuff I need to tweak?
c. Or something else?
2. I always perform backups before flashing a new rom to ensure if something goes wrong I can restore to the previous rom image. However, if I backup a GB rom that runs on an older firmware and install ICS based on a newer firmware, would restoring to GB be as simple as going into recovery and restoring his old GB rom? Or would I have to flash the old firmware first?
3. I've noticed some roms like Viper use aroma installer which can handle multiple situations of installation. Would the situation I am describing (GB firmware, S-On) be handled? I am unsure how many different firmware versions there are out there. I don't know if referring to the "old firmware" means an older ICS firmware or GB firmware.
Thank you all for your help. It is frustrating for me to be this confused about how to upgrade a phone considering the amount of times I've done it in the past. I appreciate any responses or links that could help me better understand what I must do.
so your s-on and unlocked? or locked either way
re-lock if you are unlocked and then run
the ics offical .exe RUU from
here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29979907&postcount=133
after you do that then unlock and flash a custom recovery then flash a ics rom of your choice

Try CleanROM, I've been using it since I got it. Very easy to install with S-On.
nstallation for S-ON Devices on Gingerbread firmware
Copy ROM to SD Card AND PH98IMG.zip AND GB Firmware Patch to ROOT of SD Card
Reboot to recovery
wipe data / Factory Reset
Flash ROM
Flash GB Fimrware Patch
Use Developer Menu to reboot to bootloader and flash the boot.img file in the PH98IMG.zip
Reboot
Profit!

The phone might say something about the SD card not working, so make sure you download the Gingerbread Firmware patch. Just Flash it like a rom and you're all god
Hi!
I'm just wondering if it's safe to flash the old GB bootloader, the one that allows to use the USB JIG to reset flash counter, and stays with this old bootloader, while using JB ROMs (mainly AOKP or CM).
Is someone using this old GB bootloader with newer JB ROMs??
Thanks in advance.

By the way... is there any way to know wich bootloader version are you using after flashing a new ROM?, I know most custom ROMs (AOKP, CM, ...) don't contains any bootloader, but not sure about others or about Samsung leaks.
So... is there any way to check if flashing a ROM changes the bootloader?

Sir all stock rom did't touch your bootl oader, coz they are zip file and flashing through recovery, and boot loader flashing only with odin . After flashing boot loader will erase your phone. And to flash this do some search first.

Flashing with Odin in .pda section, if I'm not mistaken. I dunno if you can back up your boot loader. But is good to have ICS and GB boot loader in 2 different tar files, just in case you want to switch back.
You can't back up a bootloader on SGS2. And frankly, given the reason you're wanting to flash it (so you can use a jig) & given there's an alternative (Triangle Away), I'd advise you not to flash it.
You don't need to. You only mess with bootloaders when you have a specific reason to do it; I.E the rom you want to use won't boot without a 'recent' bootloader.
Given the risks of rendering your phone unbootable & only fixable by JTAG if it barfs & given there's an alternative, wanting to use a jig doesn't strike me as being particularly sensible.
Hi,
I have a TF201 running ICS WW version.
I've been searching for days now trying to understand how you update to JB from ICS without bricking your device as there seems to be various warnings that your bootloader must be the correct version in order to flash the correct rom.
So my version is 2.10. I would have assumed from the numbering that that implies I have a HC bootloader? But I'm currently running ICS.
So, im sorry if this is a rookie question, but how do I update to JB from ICS when my bootloader is this version. Or perhaps more directly, how do I update my bootloader version to the JB version so I can then flash the correct ROM.
On a side note, I seem to have both CWM recovery mode 5.5.0.4 and TWRP v2.3.0.0 installed. Currently however I can only access TWRP by holding down volume down and power which brings me straight to the multiple choice of fastboot, TWRP. cold boot and wipe.
I have installed nvFLASH and backed up my blobs prior to all this - in case something like this happened
Thanks for your time
The easiest way to upgrade to the JB Boot loader is to just flash a rom that has it included such as Androwook 1.3 from the dev forum. Since you have nvflash victory you're safe from about any brick as long as you have your file back ups backed up 3x over
