[Q] shutdown in deep sleep - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i have this problem with my gt-i9100.
sometimes when my phone enters deep sleep after a time I can't turn it back on. I've tried calling it, it sounds as if it'd be turned on and ringing from the caller phone, but the sgs2 does nothing, as if it'd be turned off. I can only enter download/recovery and reboot from there
I currently have neatrom xxlsj full, happens with other ics/jb roms as well.
any ideas?

so far so good, but i've tried several and all seem to have this problem.

no battery issues?
what kernels and ROMs have you tried?

come to think about it, i think my phone was like 50% last night, then went to sleep and in the morning it was off and had 0% battery. I'll have to check more carefully, that might be it. Other than that during normal usage i find the battery life quite normal.
this issue happens in wanamlite/neatrom with their respective kernels
i don't remember having this issue in ressurection remix, but i found it quite laggy and even after fixing permissions/reinstalling rom i was getting force crashes while going through settings, so i didn't hang around it too much.

betterbatterystats app is good to finger whats goin on with the battery, in relation to the rom u r actually on.
you can also try cm or stock to see what happens.
from sii xda-ded

i was right, the battery drains like hell when it's in sod.
came back to stock. i'll see what happens

what's going on?

geez, that's a hell of a drop there. Try calibrating....but your looking at a wipe & probably a faulty chip (u better hope not, it's not fun when it's not hardware).
I've seen a couple of guys with this problem, hell sometimes i unplug mine at 65 and goes up to 68 on it's own.
I recall a portugese guy that had a problem like this, he could go from 70% to 1% in a blink; he did get another battery tho.

damn, most likely faulty chip.
i'll try calibrating. either way, i still have the warranty. sucks anyway, they're slow

Sudden shutdown and Sudden battery drain

Hi all, I have a very serious problem here. Please help me out.
Whenever I am using my phone for more than around 10-15 mins continuously, even though battery is around 80-85%, I lose network all of a sudden, the phone flickers or flashes or blinks for a moment and shuts down all of a sudden. When I try to boot it again, it says battery low and many times, it wont boot only. When it is about to be botted only it gets turned off. the solution is to connect to charger when it shuts down. At first, on connecting, it shows zero battery, and immediately battery level will be restored to the previous level, after blinking again in the charging screen and then only I can turn it on. What is the issue?
I also tried wiping data/factory reset.. Wipe cache and dalvik wipes repeatedly. Tried many roms like resurrection 2.6, 3.01, XWLPM stock rom, Salman ROM, etc. The same issue happens in all the roms as well.
Somebody do reply!

That sounds serious, have you tried sending it to the customer service? It's helpful if you're still on warranty..

well do one thing- try flashing another kernel too- anything will do - siyah maybe. 1% chance of it working..
and if it doesn't, what this means is that it is most probably a hardware issue- and you would need to get your phone checked in the service center.
Have you tried a different battery?
Sent from........Somewhere In Time
Maybe battery failure! try with a different battery if no change and everything was like before then I suggest you to send it to customer service as soon as possible.
Same thing for Stock
I experienced the same thing on Stock samsung unrooted rom 4.0.3
I suddenly found that my phone is not responding and is heated up too much, I quickly removed the battery and after letting it to cool off restarted it.
Was amazed to see battery came down to 20% from 80%, Post this incident it is working fine
Now I have tried multiple kernels and Roms and it still is working awesomely on everything I throw at it

Turns out its some battery problem. I swapped mine with a friend's battery. He is facing the same issues now and I am not facing any issue. In ebay and flipkart, it shows original battery costs just 559 Rs(around 10$). Is the original battery available for such a cheap price? Or is it not genuine?
It sounds suspiciously cheap.. mmmmm. You should try going for the legit 2000mAh from samsung longer battery life haha so much win

Hi yashwanthms,
Just to let you know, currently I'm facing exactly the same issue.
During or after using camera, gps or usage of data, the screen flickers and then after a few seconds it freezes and shuts down. Switching it on doesn't work, because it thinks the battery is dead while still having 50% left or something like that. It does however work when it is plugged into power.
Thanks for your reply of your battery replacement. I will try the same thing and see if it works out.
Still a question though: did you buy a new battery and what were your results afterwards?
Kind Regards,
Ahsimmis
same issue here
After reading above posts, I'm sure it is a battery issue. I use hotspot and GPS a lot which is why I've to charge a lot and charge while docked to car cigarette lighter too, no wonder the battery didn't last more than a year. Will buy a new battery tomorrow and post the result here.

Like others said, I think it's battery problem. Do not use cheap unreliable batteries, nor leave your phone charging after 100% charged for a long time. This would affect your battery performance. Experienced that using my back-up battery, from 25%, sudden shutdown. My original battery would alert me first "Battery is now low, please recharge now". The back-up won't.
This is to confirm that I've purchased a new battery from Samsung franchise store. It is doing fine.
Cost me Rs.800 which is like $18. The store didn't have any retail battery in stock but they provided me one from one of the phones on display. I'm not sure if I did the right thing by taking it but I needed one badly and none of the stores I went to had any in stock for retail (there are like 15 of them in a 2km radius)
This is happening to both mine and my wife's Galaxy S II's. Screen flickers, shuts down, comes back with zero battery, plug it in to charge for a few minutes, suddenly back to ~80%. I've also found the phone is hot when this happens, pulled the battery and its NOT the battery that is hot, the phone itself is (feels hottest right below the camera, just above the battery port).
I ordered a replacement battery for her and it cleared the issue for about 2 weeks but now its happening again. The replacement was a genuine Samsung OEM, same maH, same part number.
My phone is rooted with a custom ICS kernel, her's is factory ICS.
I've ordered a new battery for my phone too to try, but I'm not convinced its solely a battery issue.

I have the same problem, change the battery with new one but still it happens & I am afraid it may be hardware!
Phone is not root & running official rom 4.0.4
I have changed battery and now it works ok. But yesterday, the phone freezed and became very hot. I rebooted it and then the battery level decreased high. After that it works ok again.
same problem
hi there,
I am having the same problem as on the OP. Have already ordered a new battery, because my warranty expired on sep 15th and I was on holidays outside my city and without the invoice
do you have any feedback about changing the battery?
thanks.

Atrix shutting down (or freezing)

I have CM 7.2 installed with CWM Touch Recovery.
My phone has about 1 year and since a few weeks ago I started to find my phone off or totally unresponsive (same as off, I can't say).
The only way to get it back is remove the battery and try several times to put it back while holding the power button down.
Sometimes it doesn't even work and I have to try about 20 times or more.
The phone is not hot and it happens (at least 100% of times 'til now) when is asleep and not during CPU "hard work".
I was wondering if someone has experienced this behaviour and hopefully found a solution.
Thanks
I believe you are experiencing the dreaded Sleep of Death.
If possible, try to flash a new ROM and see if it happens. If it continues, try to go back to stock and see if it still continues because if that's the case then its a hardware problem.

Thanks for your reply.
I had some reboots trying CM9 and CM10 so I went back to CM7.2 which is great.
I then noticed that reboot didn't worked anymore (e.g. going to recovery mode caused sleep to death not restarting the phone).
Since a few days ago I started to experience the "sleep to death" and so I tried to flash a clean Neutrino to fix a potential SW issue.
The SOD frequency was even higher and the difficulty to restart the phone even more.
I want back again to CM7.2 and now I still have the problem but "only" a few times a day.
I believe is an hardware issue but I have no warranty anymore and so I have no idea how much I would pay to get new hardware components...
It's a pity, I was quite happy about everything else and going to stay with it for a long time (also thanks to XDA and Cyanogen Developers).
Cheers,
Max

Exactly.. a few days ago I was able to reanimate the phone by trying several time to reinsert the battery while holding the power switch on.
After a few time, the phone was eventually booting.
Since this morning though, code blue... the seems to be dead.
The only life sign is when, 1 time out of several, I connect USB cable to the phone and the led turns green (fixed). That's it..
It stays green even if I disconnect the cable (battery should be charged) until I remove the battery.
I think this is pretty much every symptom I noticed, here for sharing.

Those events from a few days ago (when you were still able to turn it on by performing battery acrobatics) should have been a red flag for you - sadly your phone was dying.
Seems now it's officially dead. Not much more you can do. You can take it to a service center, see if they can do anything, but don't hold your breath.

Galaxy S II random shutdowns

Hi guys,
I have recently joined xda, have been following it as a guest for quite sometime but never bothered to register but did it finally.
Now to my problem. My Galaxy S II has been facing weird problems lately, first off my phone randomly blinks like its trying to stay on but can't and immediately closes. After I open it the battery has been massively drained for example if I was on 60% battery it goes down to 3%. If I keep it closed for some time and then open it the battery increases without even charging.
The random shutdowns happens if I'm playing a game, it gets hot and closes itself but sometimes it also closes on low usage. I tried every possible way of fixing it but to no avail. I tried switching Roms, flashed stock ICS firmware, tried different root methods, wiped battery stats and calibrated the battery, tried different kernels and all but the problem still persists. I had no problem like this one on my old Galaxy S II.
Do you guys know of any solution to this god forsaken problem? I would appreciate quick answers.

If the shut downs are because of your battery, try flashing siyah kernel, then download ExTweaks from the play store and use the 'reset fuel gauge' option, and just leave your phone for a few hours and let it settle down. Hope this helps

Yeah it needs to settle down, so try resetting the gauge, then leave your phone plugged in over night. If that doesn't work I'm not sure what else you could do, sorry.
I get the exact same thing with my sgs2.
Don't know what to do. It seems to happen when I'm on facebook.
All I can do is recharge the phone again.

[Q] SGS2, more than sleep of death

Hello all, i have searched the forum for the past weeks now for a solution of the SOD (sleep of death), all i can find is new problems but no actual solution. But i think my GS2 is having more than just a sleep of death. It just doesnt tolerate my screen going of. From what i could find, most people have SOD when their device go into DEEP SLEEP. With mine, anything that causes the screen to go dark (e.g power saving during a call) crashes the phone. And it doesnt end at that, Getting the phone to reboot might take me up to 2hrs!!!! when i remove the battery and turn on the phone, its goes directly to CWM and selecting reboot, the screen stays dark and i have to repeat the process all over again till i get lucky (after about 2 hrs) for the phone to reboot (From CWM). Yes, i clear cache.
when the battery is below 30% the phone isnt such a diva, it still have this screen off pain in the a** thing, but rebooting isnt such a pain as when it goes dark and i have to reboot when the battery is at about 80-100%
-Am running CM9 along with the kernel it came with
-flashed different roms but all came with the same problem
-even unrooted and went back to original rom, but still had the same problem
-The phone was once repaired from water damaage. Including a battery change
-Since i started running CM9, while charging the phone, it doesnt get insanely HOT as when it was running original rom or any custom rom
-Downloaded wake lock to keep my phone always on, 24/7 so i kinda feel sorry for the phone as it is always on... and i miss my lock screen
please all u android gurus, help me out with this problem. I totally love this phone and its my first android.
All I can suggest is flash stock ROM, get rid of triangle on boot if you have it and go to service center.

Well thx for the reply. As I mentioned, the phone had water damage before so the warranty is void as they can link any single fault to the water damage. I Also found a spartanian way to solve my problem. I play music on the background and take out the volume. So now my music is on an infinite loop!!! Now I can put my phone to sleep and the battery last way longer than leaving the screen on all the time.
But still, any other suggestions are welcomed.

I have exactly the same problem as you.
I replaced usb port and battery, but still the problem.
For me it works better when the battery is low, than i'm able to send phone in to sleep and wake it up again, but while charging of with the 2000mAh Samsung batterie, the phone freezes in standby and i often can't get it running for a while. I also had your problem, that the phone boots into cwm sometimes.
Could you find a Solution? I also have no warranty and don't want to buy a new mainboard, it's to expensive.

If water damage happened recently (in the past month) I think your problem is water damage, because i think that when you took the phone on repair, they missed some spot cleaning the liquid on the board/under IC's (in the BGA), and now it started messing the circuitry. It has nothing to do with software, but there is one last thing you could try - JTAG... And i work in a service for repairing mobile phones .
Sorry if my English is bad.
Whenever a device goes to cwm upon reboot, software is misbehaving.
Keep on stock, plain stock.
If you like, you can use a nuke script to clean the device for custom ROMs leftovers.

[Q][help] S2 randomly shuts down

Hi. I have a very frustrating issue I hope someone can help with.
Over the last 3 days or so, my s2 has started to randomly shut itself down. It only appears to happen when I'm using an app, nothing specific, it can happen anytime.
The battery level has been anything from around 75% to 30%.
Sometimes when I turn it back on, the battery shows I am at 1 or 2 %, making me think it might be some kind of calibration problem, but I've tried the suggested method to no avail. I've also completely fresh installed the Rom I was on (neat Rom) and tried another (disaster Rom) but the problem remains.
Can anyone suggest what could be causing the random shut downs?
Thank you
Karf
Are you undervolting/ under clocking this can cause a sod
Hi. Nothing like that, just used neat Rom or disaster Rom as they come.

Your phone(battery) has insane gauge chip search for this it answer in your question(it's only for battery)
Happy new year

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure my issue is to do with the guage chip directly, as my phone will switch itself off at any battery level. The issue designed in the other thread its having something like 56% and then having a much lower value after an intended reboot.
Shutdown it's called sleep of death( scary name) but it not death it's just sleeping forever... it problem with your kernel and battery problem is insane gauge chip...
Happy new year
Paulius
I've just charged to full charge, unplugged - and within 2 minutes, the phone froze, could not do anything - so i pressed the power button until it went off, and it booted back up again without me doing anything - when it booted, it showed i had 2% battery. Then it did the same thing, froze, i had to reboot - then it showed 37% battery.........no idea what's going on apart from maybe a faulty battery...
Buy new battery. It was here on the forum a few times.
Yes. When phone hot(sometimes not) it take battery about 50-60%(I don't know exactly) but sometimes it add battery...
If you flash siyah kernel with stweaks(5 version) you can reset it but chip do funny thing even you reset...
Happy new year
Paulius
try Battery caliberation app ...
if it doesnt work buy a new battery
What are you talking about ? It's not battery Fault it's Insane Gauge Chip.... And Battery Calibration not helping...
I decided to go the whole hog and go back to a stock unrooted ICS, after wiping everything, then CFRoot - then reinstalled Neatrom light - currently restoring apps via Titanium - fingers crossed...
I think you don't have anymore BSOD But if you have flash Syiah kernel
Try new kernel and reset fuel gage
Try installing a new kernel like siyah or dorimanx and then reset your battery log this should resolve your problem if not buy a new battery.

I think I have a very similar issue. The randomly reboots happens several times a day, it does not happen though when charging (never). By now I'm on jb leak and still have the issue. When it shuts down, the sreen dims a bit and then it's gone, the weird thing is that often I have to pull the battery or charge the phone before reboot is possible, the battery shows different values after rebooting, sometimes close to what was before (especially when rebooting on charger), and sometimes way off the values before. I came initially from slimrom with siyah or dorimanx kernel, I really hoped jb leak would help (also tried different kernels), but it didn't. It also seems to me that it happens more often with the sd card (32gb) and without the phone seems more stable, but still it happens from tme to time. Once the screen dim (only one or two steps) and shut down even happend when in CWM recovery, is it maybe hardware related? It's very hard to find the source of the problem, anybody else experience similar issues? By the way the shutdown I have is not a proper shut down, the phone doesn't show the message "is shutting down".
I've completely wiped, used Odin to go back to ics stock, installed cfroot, then installed neatrom light. Had the same issue, so I've installed siyah, and used stweaks to reset the battery fuel gauge. I've only been off charge for 10 mins so far, but normally it would have shut down by now, so here's hoping...

Update - battery was at 89%, and the phone shut down, when rebooted, it showed 28%, then when plugging in while it was shut down, the battery icon showed about 50%. Like a previous reply, it never happens on charge, so it does appear that the battery is knackered, time to go shopping I guess :-\

I had the same problem - SOD several times a day. I change the batery with a fresh new samsung 2000 mA one.
Unfortunatelly SOD came back, but I found a trick: turn off WiFi. Use it only manually.
For the past 3 months I succeded to have 0 SOD's.
I know that manual WiFi is a setback but it works with those experiencing SOD.
Hope it will be usefull.
