GPS question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Is the GPS on this thing just not as accurate as HTC or what....it seems to be consistently 20 ft off. But then there are times its right...what can I do to improve accuracy?

Well I cleared cache and dalvik and it seems to be right now.

Battery life varies depending on location?

Running AOSP ish rom and applied the latest GPS fix (can't remember exactly which one).
So I have been running this rom for a long time, like since it was released. The only issue was the gps was still crappy. I did the hardware fix but that didn't help. About 2 months ago I saw a new fix which involved changing the info in the gps settings page. Anyway, gps is fast to lock (like 5 seconds) and is accurate now.
Around the same time I did the gps fix, I noticed I started having worse battery life. I hardly use my phone during the day and some days don't make a call or use gps, internet (other auto email notifications) etc but I notice my battery is down to 10-20% at the end of the day, approx 10 hours after taking it off charge. This is while at work with no wifi connected and no way the gps could get a lock.
Now if I am off, going from place to place in my car (connected to my bluetooth head unit) and when at home the phone sitting on a table, connected to wifi and with a reasonable ability to get a gps lock, my battery is still 80-90% charged at the end of the day.
What could be causing this? I have thought that when at work I have a worse signal and that the momentary loss of signal and the searching for a signal may cause this. How about the fact that it isn't connected to wifi but there are a couple available?
Thanks for any info.

[Q] Whats the GPS on Atrix like

Considering buying an ATRIX but I need good GPS, whats locking speed and accuracy like and is it fast even with Data connection off?
I consider it great....but I always have connection on....
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk
Not sure about with data off, but in regular use its great, and is one of the main reasons I switched from the iPhone. It also seems to calculate real time traffic into your ETA.

keep mobile data off 85% of the time. almost never use the gps. connects within seconds indoors without downloading data. ive had a g1, droid, and acer iconia tab. this blows them away gps wise.
I was shocked at how fast it connected and started navigating. Last week I tried my g/f's inspire. Took like over 5 mins to lock. My Atrix takes seconds.
The Atrix has a fantastic gps. Even better than my son's low-end Garmin. I used it for a 600-mile trip to Spokane and it never missed a beat. I loaded my route before leaving, and it cached all the maps. Hence, it worked well even in areas without data service. I was so impressed that I bought the car dock when I arrived in Spokane just to have better access to the gps features in the car.
Best GPS on any phone. I have ever used.

Rofl seriously my captivate gps would have me driving a mile away through houses, driving in one direction while pointing in another direction, and tell me I was accurate to 30m all at the same time. Atrix gps is awesome.

Agreed, i'm very happy with the gps. It didnt occur to me to test without data before but i just tried it.
I went into airplane mode, went into Gps Test app and turned gps on. It immediately located the first satellite and others, and ~6-7 seconds later it had full lock. This is from my 3rd floor office of a 4 floor building.

GPS is awesome on these phones. I don't know about with the data off though, you have to get maps from somewhere. With Google maps, you can set it to cache your route and that helps if you're in poor service areas. I use mine almost everyday, and all day long, it never misses a step.
I came from the Captivate and I can tell you it's excellent. I get an approximate location within 2-3 seconds, and an accurate location within about 7-8 seconds. And by accurate within 5 feet or about 1.5M. I was surprised how fast and accurate the GPS was on my phone. This was while indoors, I'm sure if you went outside you could lock on a few seconds faster.
I think you have your answer OP.
Keep in mind Google Maps will use the cell towers to get location. Google will even work if you disable the GSP. I use Navigon. I like having the maps on my phone just in case. I also use BackCountry Navigator. Both these programs will only use the GPS. The Atrix GPS is great. I has always lock in 10 12 seconds or less. If you use GPS Status to download the A-GPS XTRA Data, it will lock in 1 to 3 seconds. The Atrix GPS seems to be very accurate also.
I found it to be awesome on froyo and real iffy on gingerbread.

GPS problems with leaked ICS

I've flashed clean and joelz stock, but for three days, GPS cannot locate any better than around 40 meters.
On Meanrom I usually got a lock within 10 metres in a matter of seconds.
Anyone else having this problem?

Haven't seen this problem. My phone's GPS performance actually increased, and locates much faster and much more accurate. It does, however, sometimes pop back and forth between exact location, and a triangulated location using cell towers, and it happens a second apart. It usually fixes itself after a few seconds.

Same here, also, on GB my compass was about 50 degrees off, on ics its about 5 off. Overall a significant improvement.
I also have no problem with GPS. Locks quick (less than 5 seconds) with clear open area.
No problem with GPS here...
Mean Tom had a special tweak to improve GPS. Your ics rom does not.

[Q] Kworker - my worst enemy!

What exactly is the process kworker, and what does it do?
On two different custom roms (Shostock and Phone Bricker - multiple versions, even with latest v2.7), this process is KILLING my battery, to the point of 25-30% overnight with ZERO usage.... sending 1-2 text msgs in a row, I could watch the percentage drop 1-2% in that short time.
On STOCK rom with stock kernel, or Cherry Picker or Siyah kernels, I do NOT have this problem and I can get 24-36 hours of unplugged time with at least 12 of those hours being heavy to moderate usage... I can sit and post in Facebook for a solid hour and only go through 2-3%... but if I go custom, I'd lose 3-4x that amount of power.
I'm just wondering what I'm missing....
I know its with the kernel. It used to be a problem with Linux, but updates fixed it. I have a few kworker process that I to would like to get rid of on my phone... though, they dont wear down my battery like yours! Mine keep my phone awake for a while... thats about it. I am going to watch this thread closely to see what people have to say about FIXING this issue...
I'd appreciate that... I don't like being restricted to a stock rom just to get decent battery life.
Today I installed Phone Bricker v2.7 after a complete reset... simply loaded the rom, didn't sign in with Google, simply loaded an app to monitor usage and took a nap... in not even 90 mins, it'd already dropped to 92% from a full charge with no usage.
I'm seeing this type of behavior from both Phone Bricker and ShoSTOCK.
Am I doing something wrong?
Gotta give it a couple days to settle. Battery percentages will never report correctly for the first couple days after flashing a new kernel (and both of those ROMs include a kernel, I believe). It's been posted a couple times throughout this forum, but I know it's a little hard to find sometimes, so I'll cut you a break. See here for a recent example.
After a few days, then you can check to see if kworker is still killing your battery, and you'll have a much better idea.
Well, I'd run Phone Bricker for roughly 2 weeks, dating back to v2.5, and tried sticking it out through the "settle" time on v2.7 as well, but performance never improved.
Also worked with ShoSTOCK, also well over 2 weeks with no negligible improvement... my battery just kept being drained and it's taken me the better part of a month to narrow down this one process that is the culprit.

Have you done a true full wipe?...not just dalvik and cache?

I do a full factoy reset; clear cache, clear dalvik... am I missing something?
I did factory reset/wipe, clear cache and dalvik before going to phonebricker and entropy dafuq kernel... I have the issue of battery drainage but I just did it a day or two ago. Will give it some time to settle and report back!

Mini update:
Live wallpapers, even if screen is off, will drain your battery like crazy.
Checked Facebook on 100% charge, was on for maybe 10minutes. Turned off screen for a little over an hour. When I checked my phone I had 90% battery. 1%/min drain? Hmm... I turned off tgeclive wallpaper and my battery is now at 83% after 4 more hours and some mild/moderate use of the phone.
Might not be news, but a great tip. Didn't have this issue as bad on stock GB, but I still refuse to run live wallpapers after seeing that happen.

Not all LWPs do this...only the badly coded ones.
I've never used LWP because I'd always heard/assumed it was a battery kill - can you recommend some that you know to be solid?
Thanks for all the feedback so far gang.... as for this stock rom, as we sit, it's at 16 hours off charge and I'm still at 66% with moderate usage, and that's just beautiful, I just wish I could achieve the same with aftermarket roms as well.
Anyone???
I'd went back to stock, and it was working AWESOME for about 2 weeks as far as battery life goes, but suddenly the phone would lose it's data connection, requiring a reboot. After the reboot the phone had no signal bars, just a 0 with a line through it.... 3-4 restarts later, 3G + data would eventually come back, but data would last sometimes 5 minutes, or 5 hours before stopping.
I was out of town for 3 days, just got back, and while on the road I lost signal so much that I had no choice but to pull over, fire up the laptop and download a new rom... I did a full wipe, factory reset/data, wipe cache and dalvik and was using Shostock v3.0. I had horrid battery time due to this and I feel after 3 days of moderate usage, it's had time to "settle" with no changes. Had ZERO data problems, but horrid battery time due to kworker.
Last night (roughly 12 hours ago) I installed Serindipity 9, and already right out of the gate, showing kworker just blasting the battery... this process is haunting me with the roms I'm installing...
I installed a new SD card for troubleshooting purposes... no affect.

Sorry, I never saw this post. The ones that I use on and off are:
- Galaxy Pack by Maxelus (really, any Maxelus LWP is excellent)
- Water Drops Plus
- Ice Cream Sandwich Live WP by Vectors and Pixels (another really good developer)

don't worry you are not alone. seems like this kworker issue is going around and making lot of people crazy including me.
I tried removing all application which use some kind of timer. Still no go, the kworker comes back to haunt me too all roms - aokp, phone bricker, serendipity, even hell raised one
This issue has just about killed my ability to use any custom rom on this phone.... surely I can't be the only one affected???
I see in another post that this seems to be a hot topic, but then again there are so many others that seem to be flying with no problem....

I'm running Shostock 3.0.4 w/included cherrypicker kernel. Battery life has been great.
Watchdog is picking up random kworker processes as well but no where near the run times(longest was 52sec) you're experiencing. I wonder what the difference is....

At this point - I'd LOVE to know. Some are getting great usage with custom roms, and I'm still stuck on stock because ANY other rom kills my battery in less than a day... drops 25-30% overnight unused.
I really wish someone could shed some more light on this...........

The TS GPS can be quite good. It is better than my Garmin ForeRunner 305 (still one of the best GPS receivers) 4 out of 5 GPS points or so. Occasionally though, there is a point far off other times the accuracy just decreases some minutes.
With EPO (use MT GPS app) and A-GPS it locks very fast too.
There is a HW problem though, the GPS antenna can snap. But then you will not get a lock at all.
It is normal that GPS units shows speed when still, especially with bad coverage, you have to compare with a known reference GPS to say if the TS is bad/good
There is minimal difference for apps (most only have some smoothing differences)
I believe IpBike is the best running app.

It is normal, if you have started timing.
Due to accurracy, the GPS position is not exactly the same everytime, it is like throwing darts.
The GPS can be good.
