Considering buying an ATRIX but I need good GPS, whats locking speed and accuracy like and is it fast even with Data connection off?
I consider it great....but I always have connection on....
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk
Not sure about with data off, but in regular use its great, and is one of the main reasons I switched from the iPhone. It also seems to calculate real time traffic into your ETA.

keep mobile data off 85% of the time. almost never use the gps. connects within seconds indoors without downloading data. ive had a g1, droid, and acer iconia tab. this blows them away gps wise.
I was shocked at how fast it connected and started navigating. Last week I tried my g/f's inspire. Took like over 5 mins to lock. My Atrix takes seconds.
The Atrix has a fantastic gps. Even better than my son's low-end Garmin. I used it for a 600-mile trip to Spokane and it never missed a beat. I loaded my route before leaving, and it cached all the maps. Hence, it worked well even in areas without data service. I was so impressed that I bought the car dock when I arrived in Spokane just to have better access to the gps features in the car.
Best GPS on any phone. I have ever used.

Rofl seriously my captivate gps would have me driving a mile away through houses, driving in one direction while pointing in another direction, and tell me I was accurate to 30m all at the same time. Atrix gps is awesome.

Agreed, i'm very happy with the gps. It didnt occur to me to test without data before but i just tried it.
I went into airplane mode, went into Gps Test app and turned gps on. It immediately located the first satellite and others, and ~6-7 seconds later it had full lock. This is from my 3rd floor office of a 4 floor building.

GPS is awesome on these phones. I don't know about with the data off though, you have to get maps from somewhere. With Google maps, you can set it to cache your route and that helps if you're in poor service areas. I use mine almost everyday, and all day long, it never misses a step.
I came from the Captivate and I can tell you it's excellent. I get an approximate location within 2-3 seconds, and an accurate location within about 7-8 seconds. And by accurate within 5 feet or about 1.5M. I was surprised how fast and accurate the GPS was on my phone. This was while indoors, I'm sure if you went outside you could lock on a few seconds faster.
I think you have your answer OP.
Keep in mind Google Maps will use the cell towers to get location. Google will even work if you disable the GSP. I use Navigon. I like having the maps on my phone just in case. I also use BackCountry Navigator. Both these programs will only use the GPS. The Atrix GPS is great. I has always lock in 10 12 seconds or less. If you use GPS Status to download the A-GPS XTRA Data, it will lock in 1 to 3 seconds. The Atrix GPS seems to be very accurate also.
I found it to be awesome on froyo and real iffy on gingerbread.
I'm currently getting ridiculous battery drains(like 500 to 980 ma) when my phone isn't plugged in. My phone also gets really hot. This isn't constant but has happed a lot even right after restarting my phone. I have been using Battery Monitor Widget. It might be off or wrong readings but the heat and the speed my battery is draining tell me it isn't.
Details
3.7 volt battery
Drain of 500-900ma when only using 4g no apps open
Clean rom 4.3
Battery usage general show most battery is from display.
Sometime even when it plugged in to a htc usb charger it still has shown around -143 ma.
Any ideas
I'm pretty sure just having 4g on entitles your phone to half of its natural battery life XD
Typically a lot of drain comes from disturbance of deep sleep, I believe there's "wakelock" or something similar on the android market that helps prevent and/or shows what is causing it.
Of course, common issue, hard to say if it isn't something more generic
currently I have it sitting here charging with screen on only as far as I can tell. It for about 10 minutes was telling me it was charging at 32 ma then it went up 205 ma and bounced between that and 105 ma for a bout ten minutes. It went from room tempature to 44.7 degrees celsius.
Now it skipped to -55 ma (while still ac charging) for a few minutes spiked to +653 ma and now is back to 100 ma. That seem to be all over the place and the phone is very warm.
To me that indicates either a problem or a huge drain of power.
Am I just that far off. Has anybody looked at the reading from battery monitor widget or something similair to see what a normal drain is in ma or a normal charge.
maybe an unruley app running in the background? check what's using your battery: settings- > about phone- >battery- > battery use.
It usually shows the majority of the power (50% at least) going to the screen and not much else notable.
Also on a probably unconnected note it produces ridiculous RF interference. But only when charging. At work it was causing crackling in both my desk phone and laptop and when in my dorm it was causing loud cracking in my speakers well over 2 feet away. Is that normal for everyone else.
Start uninstalling or freezing apps that you've installed

My speakers don't crackle when the phone is near, but apparently it's not unheard of:

Just out of curiosity, what radio are you on? Gb or ics firmware?

This is also my problem. I have been experiencing huge power drain ever since installing the 3.11.605.22 leak. I tried different kernels, rolling back to GB. Went S-off and tried different radios, and then most recently moved up to the new 3.13.605.7 leak, and am currently on CleanROM DE 1.3 and nothing has improved.
Sometimes my mA will go beyond -1000!
Would appreciate any suggestions as I have no clue what to do about it.
I would suggest downloading System Panel from playstore. It shows you what's running and how much power its using from your device.

What Rom are you on I have noticed alit of devs have the events per second cranked up to near 200 (stock is 70) and I had huge battery drain on my evo when I cranked it to 160.I been turning then down to 90 and have had better battery life but I'm sure it's a combination of things not just this matter. I think it is better to wait for the official firmware. Hopefully it is out on the 9th as it is rumored.
My vote? Your phone is scanning your SD card like none other. Seen this a few times.
Copy everything off both cards, format both cards through the phone, internal and external, and then copy everything back.

That didn't do it. Down 12% in an hour with limited use.
Say, anyone else who is getting decent battery times have Battery Monitor Widget and are willing to give us battery-challenged folks an idea for what a typical mA draw range is for your device when you are using it?
I am having the same problem with my phone.. Its gotten a little better since moving to the latest Clean Rom, but if Im actually using the phone (screen on and doing something) the battery plumits. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I bought this phone from someone and didnt get it from Verizon so Im SOL as far as getting them to replace it.

Definitely try this and also use rom manager to change autostart programs. And if that doesn't work call for a new battery.

Thanks
Accuracy is almost 30 feet which is 10 meters all the time which is a good sign.
Note that the device was tested in aero plane mode so no Agps which means a real good sign.

wow! less than 2 secs connection on non-assisted gps.
btw, how does hox performs in that test?
lol @ background music, unbreak my heart.
it's like the s2 singing that song since it's thinking it's going to be replaced by the new s3.
hehe
as this device has glonass along with gps it should be damn fast.
nice video posted above and some extra news is the mobile needs 20 seconds to boot... i thought there would be some improvements here
A very good post and nice video, i was actually worried about this.
He says that even when he is in buildings and houses the GPS managed to lock onto a satellite.

HTC One X
Lock speed : 2 - 5 Seconds
Accuracy : 5 feet (<2 meters) [ Consistently getting 5 - 15 feet ]
Number of satellites lock : 2 - 10 Max [But never looses connection]
Location : Singapore
Has Only GPS
Galaxy Note
Lock speed : 2 - 5 Seconds
Accuracy : 30 feet (+-10 meters) [ Consistently getting 24 - 35 feet ]
Number of satellites lock : 8 - 17 Max [But never looses connection]
Location : Singapore
Has Both GPS and Glonass
Galaxy S3
Refer above video
I expect SGS3 will be in range with Galaxy Note with accuracy of < 30 meters and instant lock to the satellites as shown in the video.
Point to note here is, just because the devices locks to more no. of satellites doesn't mean the accuracy is going to be good. I have seen it and experienced it but do not have an explanation for it.
I am very much interested in SGS3 wrt the GPS for Using SYGIC ! especially with the original Samsung car mount.

he already loaded the location with the gps on the s3
he didnt on the s2 and disable wifi when he starts
if you look at 5min, where the S3 is probably still hot starting in gmaps, after 2-3s he quits gmaps and the GPS lock icon is still blinking (= no lock), so much for "instant lock"
the S2 locks rather fast (even if most likely slower) with hot fix outdoors in similar conditions
so sure, glonass+gps is probably faster, but, the comparison video is pretty poorly made.

I agree with you. That was a bad comparison and doesn't give the S2 justice.
I took a screenshot of my S2, beeing indoors, and as you can see I got a 3 sec. fix. It varies between 3-10 seconds.
At the Galaxy S3 Presentation Show I read in the specs the s3 supports glonass too. I love glonass on my xperia play and miss it so much on my EVO 3D.

Do you have any problems with GPS-apps in Xperia?
Theoretically, with GPS and Glonass, you should get 24 satellites in view with both, 12 over the horizon with GPS and 12 with Glonass. I'm not sure if all GPS-apps are able to show 24 sats?

I own a Note and One X and the Note's GPS performance is much better than the One X's. The One X's is fine for navigation purposes, but less so for sportstracking and so forth. It's lock speed is not 2-5 seconds as you suggest (it's generally 5-10s and occasionally a little longer, which is fine, but not as good as you suggest), and neither does it never lose position.

thanks for clearing that up.
liars go to hell.
Who cares about the lock time, accuracy is more important...
I had HTC One X for 1.5 month and GPS was the best I've ever seen. I use Sportypal to track my workouts and not only it almost always showed my track on the road and not over houses, but it also was almost perfectly smooth with little zig-zagging:
SG3 though, I had only few days and first experience is not good, actually it's terrible. It was loosing connection all the time on clear day and the result - the track was all over the place:
This phone had the best GPS I've ever seen on any device, and I've had many phones. It connects under 2 seconds and finds more than 10 sattelites every time, even without a data connection. I'm very impressed by it.
I've had a combination of two weird / PITA problems since upgrading past LE6 leak:
1. Slow to lock GPS
2. REALLY bad battery life (losing 10% an hour while idle in some cases).
In the last few days I was at a conference with known poor signal indoors, so I started toggling Airplane mode on during some of the sessions. I noticed a DRAMATIC change in battery life. I thought the improvement was too good for just having disabled for about 2 hours each day, so the last two days I've toggled Airplane mode on and immediately back off after heavy use... I've done this today and after frequent use repeated the toggle routine. At the time of this posting I'm sitting at 70% at a time of day I'd usually be around half that.
Anyone willing to try this and let me know if I've just been lucky the last few days?
More info:
I've run CPU Spy and I know my phone isn't going to deep sleep as frequently as it should. I installed better battery stats and nothing was causing partial or kernel wakes so I was about to give up.
I believe this may stem from the GPS having crappy lock time, since I frequently use Facebook on the phone and it activates GPS (and doesn't F'n lock) I figured airplane mode after use couldn't hurt.
Qualifiers for a valid test include the two problems I mentioned above. If you're lucky enough to not have these issues, please recommend your settings... WiFi is off with screen off, i'm using screen filter at 38%... I've tried task killers, I've tried many different ROMs... this is the first time I've seen any noticeable improvement.
I heard that powering down your phone completely works even better...not sure though, might need to test it.
Jk. But yeah, it's well known that the radios are one of the biggest drains of battery besides the screen. Turning them off will obviously increase battery life, but it also turns your phone into a big iPod touch, as you can't receive calls, texts, etc. Add for the GPS issue, several roms have zero GPS issues, try them out, see which gives you best GPS. And turn it off when you're not using it.

The battery life advantage exists even when the radio was only toggled off for about 1s. I'm no longer leaving it off for hours.
Yeah, probably because it kills the GPS searching for satellites. So either flash a new modem or ROM. I leave my GPS on 100 percent of the time, as when it works properly there is no battery drain when an app isn't using it. The GPS is known to be hit or miss with lf6, so take that and fix it with a modem flash.
Edit: in other words, your toggle method won't improve battery anymore than a properly working modem, and it's a lot more of a hassle to you to keep toggling instead of trying different modems

Do you have a recommendation on a modem then? I'm currently using King-Kang (love AOKP and Paranoid Android... Dagr8 did one hell of an integration). I've left the kernel and modem alone since then.
I'm using LE2, you really just have to try them and see what works best for you.

The TS GPS can be quite good. It is better than my Garmin ForeRunner 305 (still one of the best GPS receivers) 4 out of 5 GPS points or so. Occasionally though, there is a point far off other times the accuracy just decreases some minutes.
With EPO (use MT GPS app) and A-GPS it locks very fast too.
There is a HW problem though, the GPS antenna can snap. But then you will not get a lock at all.
It is normal that GPS units shows speed when still, especially with bad coverage, you have to compare with a known reference GPS to say if the TS is bad/good
There is minimal difference for apps (most only have some smoothing differences)
I believe IpBike is the best running app.

Due to accurracy, the GPS position is not exactly the same everytime, it is like throwing darts.
