Screen checkered. [Read if u over clock] - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I cleared my cache and dalvik cash and when I rebooted the phone the screen had a sorta checkerboard pattern on it...it straightened up when I rebooted again What would cause that?

Have you been overclocking your GPU?
If so reset it to 533mhz and never OC it again. Sounds like textbook GPU overclock failure.

Generally speaking any artifacts that arise shouldn't be permanent. However damage from overvolting can occur. I didn't play around with the GPU clock settings in the custom kernel so I don't know how much they overvolt it, but that is sure to cause problems if it does, in time.
Artifacts caused by overclocking the GPU, like that checkerboard pattern you saw, are usually temporary. But if you see artifacts like that then it's a sure sign that your OC is failing and you should fall back a notch, or just go back to default clock speed period.
I have years experiencing overclocking graphics cards and processors alike on my PC. Pretty obvious what happened here.

Right on man thanks...I have run antutu so many times that I know what the graphics score is and I can tell ANYONE reading this that over clocking the GPU does not speed the phone up. I'm back at 533 and still hit this on pegasus governor. This is what i hit with the gpu set at 620 (or whatever the next step is) That was the only thing I had changed in GPU. So take dark leaders advice and slow it back down...

Thanks for sharing this guys, I was getting this when playing some games, especially with modern combat 4. Just flashed the 29.1 (from 28/5g) and am going to leave everything at default for now to see how it runs.
Edit: Would ya look at that.... played again on stock settings with Perseus 29.1 and it runs like a dream! Not a single glitch, lag, or even the slightest artifact! Sometimes less is more!

CPU overclocking can have tangible gains for phone use. But GPU is pretty tight setup from stock, and pushing it harder won't really improve much of anything. In fact I only recommend overclocking desktop grade GPU's for benchmarking only, as it's impact on real world performance is so minimal that it isn't worth the extra needed voltage and the possibility of artifacting that you get with it.
So yeah definitely enjoy the phone at 1.8Ghz CPU and leave the GPU alone

This is very good info indeed. I am currently at one level higher in gpu and after reading this thread its going back to 533. Planning on keeping this phone for the long haul.

I know exactly what you're talking about and it is not limited to your model Samsung. It happened on my Galaxy Tab as well.
Actually, this is normal, even if not overclocked. It happened to me after clearing the caches like you did and I thought it was locked up, cause it sat there for a while and I kept trying reboots, thinking I was hosed. But this is a natural phenomenon!
When this happens, do not reboot! Instead, just put it down, go make a sandwich and come back. It will be booted! (screen may have turned off by then, as it normally would after a while after booting)!
Then reboot again and it should come up normally!

My dual GTX570 cards that have been over volted and overclocked beg to differ. Noticeable gains in many games after doing so. Not just in the benchmarks. That is com pairing areas of very noticeable frame drops to where the from drops were less severe and kept from stuttering.
I do agree that the GPU on our phone does not need to be overclocked.

I use to mess with gpu overclocking on my GNex and it would always get that glitchy stuff on the screen when I played games. I just never touch it now.

I OC'd both on the GNex and now the beast and have had no trouble at all. Speed freak! :laugh:

I agree that the GPU doesn't need to be overclocked, although I did overclock mine from 533 MHz to 800 MHz.
My comment about the "Colored checkerboard screen after clearing the Dalv chache", when it's botting up again immediately after doing that, was only in reference to the fact that that happens on some Samsung devices immediately after clearing that cache and it starts to boot up, regardless of whether the CPU, or GPU has been overclocked or not and it just sits there for a while and will seem like it has locked up.
In reality, if you just let it do its thing; just put it down and walk away, eventually, it will finish booting and it will be fine. Then, once your Home Screen has finally come up again, you just reboot it one more time and it will boot as it normally boots, without the funky looking screen.
I guess this screen glitch is just what happens when it's rebuilding that cache, which I would assume it does when it boots again and I assume that's probably why the boot takes so long after clearing that cache.
In other words, my point was simply that all is well and there is no need for any concern. It just looks like there is.
But hang in tight and about 3-5 minutes later, you will have your device back again!

[Q] How hot is too hot?

I installed the webtop over hdmi mod on my Atrix and while testing it out, it got very warm in my hand. I opened the setcpu app and noticed that while overclocked to 1.3GHz, the CPU was running at 75C! I lowered it back down to the stock 1GHz and the temp slowly went down and settled at 63C.
It seems that while in webtop mode, the CPU is taxed at 100% all the time so I'm wondering if it's safe to stay overclocked when using webtop.
Everyone has different opinions of what is too hot around here.
IMO the cooler the better. IMI No Atrix should have a temp above 60c and I'm not even comfortable with above 50c either...

I have experienced the same problem and worried that something may fry.... I have had mine overclocked at 1.45 using debian linux and all of a suddent he phone freezes and restarts.... Since it did it to me the second time I have kept my phone at 1Ghz... I am new at this so please don't beat me up too bad for being a noob... Just want to see if maybe undervolting it a little might help or hurt it?

Here are some tips I can offer
1.Try re-flashing your custom kernel and see if that fixes the web-top thing and over heating
Whenever the phone is plugged to the web-top it will naturally overheat so it's kinda expected remember now it's gotta work harder since its displaying on lap-dock or TV,but if you can cook an egg on it it might be too hot...lol
2.Set profile for temperature on setcpu so this way once you reach for example 100F your phone will clock down a little and so it might help the heat issue.You can set even more than one temp profile so this way when it reaches 96 it goes down a little then when it reaches 100 it will clock down a little more and such.
3.If that doesn't help,which in my situation it did.Flash a different kernel mayb it's just the one you're using that is causing funny stuff to happen.
Edit: not sure but i think undervolting helps battery but causes more heat,I myself don't undervolt I just created litterally a bunch of setcpu profiles for battery level,screen off,incall,charging,temp,and time and I'm getting 13 hour days at 1.3Ghz and temp profiles have been helping by clocking down when it's too hot therefore saving battery and drastic overheating.I dontlike my phone going anything over 104F it gets me paranoid,but that's just me.
I tried reflashing the kernel but it didn't change anything. I'm using Faux's 1.3GHz overclock kernel for Gingerbread (2.6.32.9). Is there something else I should be using?

Do what sktrix said in rest of his post.
I use the stopgap 1.0GHz kernel, and UV does lower temperatures. I would definitely try UV'ing a wee bit. You don't need to go crazy. I am using the following with great results for both temp and battery life:

My setcpu profile clocks it back if I reach 60C, (I idle in the low to mid 30's). Under heavy load I reach around 52C max which is quite acceptable.
Now, granted I am not using Webtop, but the end result for UV should be the same. Lower temps and better battery life. You may also want to try just using 1.0GHz when on Webtop. The phone has more than enough power at this clock speed.
There is a bug with faux's kernel that causes the webtop to clock the phone at max speeds until restart.

I know I'm straying from my correct forums here, however I have an LG Optimus 2X which like the Atrix, is a Tegra 2 CPU.
Our phones get VERY hot, I have had my CPU up to 86C before I decided to back off the stress test. CPUs are very good at handling high temperatures, and IMO you will see no ill effects from doing so, I am unsure of whether or not the Tegra 2 has thermal throttling/shut down, but in my experience they should be fine to around 80C.
The only issue I can forsee is the battery, batteries HATE high temperatures and it is awful for their life span, this is why your laptop batteries turn to crap after 1-2 years, even if low charge cycles, because they are always hot.
I would not be concerned about anything in the 70C realm, at all.

Experienced this countless times. More with the latest 1.45Ghz, but it did happen on the previous release. When I dopped the mhz with setcpu, it wont scale but stay at max cpu. It even did it a few times without using the webtop.

So which overclocked kernel is best for webtop? I too have noticed where the CPU hangs at 100% at 1.45Ghz for a while when disconnected but it is always there when im in webtop mode.... How is Faux 1.3Ghz kernel with webtop?

It will still hang at 1.3ghz, though it's a known bug. I just stick with the 1.0 enhanced, there's no noticeable real-world difference from going over 1.0ghz anyway, it's just a benchmark gimmick. Right now, the software that's out there is optimized to run on existing hardware w/o overclocks. I've run Shadowgun at 1.45ghz and didn't see any difference over the 1.0 enhanced.
Now, if we were trying to run games that were coded specifically or faster-paced chipsets then we'd need overclocking to catch up much like you would in the PC arena. That, however, is not happening in the cell phone market just yet.

IMO there is no need for 1.3GHz or 1.45GHz in everyday use of a phone. The only benefit is for OC'ing bragging rights. Until we can control phone temperatures better, it's pointless to risk the substantial heat increase on ALL internal components for extended periods of time which results from much increased CPU temperatures.

Not sure if this is the same with phones but normally a CPU should stay at 40C idle and 50C load. Maximum would be 60C while benching or something.
If it goes above that I would definitely underclock/undervolt.

[Q] Unable to overclock and keep running

First I am aware that overclocking is not "safe" and all that kind of stuff
However for some reason I am unable to OC my SGS2 and run the phone on a steady way.
I have tried several ROMs (stock and custom) with different kernels and OCing apps with no avail.
I am not even able to run at 1.4Ghz or 1.6Ghz without having my phone reboot or hard lock on me.
Is there a particular or recommended setting (most successful combination) that anyone out there can suggest me trying?
Sometimes it will hang under heavy gaming but sometimes even browsing app and regular stuff will cause the phone to reboot or lock. If I work with no OCing at all then everything is fine and dandy.

Sounds like a very temperamental cpu. Currently I have the same setup you do and have never had issue with 1400mhz or 1600mhz. Though I usually leave mine at 1200mhz. What app are you running when it hangs?
And just as important, do you have alot running in the background? The modified touchwiz launcher unnamed comes with can be enabled to show a red dot next to the apps that have been opened and are in the background.

Not all CPUs can overclock - there's a reason it was sold as a 1.2 GHz chip.
Well as I've mentioned before, it could even hand when browsing through my apps menu, browsing the gallery, playing a game (non in particular) and the funny part is that the phone is not even hot to touch.
What I know for sure if that if no OC = no hangs, no reboots.
I do have the App monitor widget that comes with the stock ROM and currently using it on UnNamed 1.3.1 and I only have Widget Locker App. However I have try closing it and still will happen.
Not sure if maybe this CPU is somehow having an issue that makes it unstable as soon as I OC it.

nope.. just by testing. it does have to do a little bit with the kernel and rom. the roms didnt originally have stable OC. i would assume that all of them do now. one thing you might try is giving them a little more voltage (just a little) at the higher clocks, but be careful. if you increase the voltage that means that you will sink more enery through the cpu and it will get hot quick. make sure you watch the temp.
i find that setcpu is less stable than the built in cm7 oc menu but cm7 doesnt have a voltage menu.
but on the same token... why OC? i can and i did but i dont need to... everything is like butter and i didnt see that huge a gain by OCing it anyways

have you ever overclocked PC CPUs? if you have spent much time doing that, then you would know that not every chip, even within the same model/family, will clock the same. take 2 CPUs, from the same batch, same model, with identical hardware tied to them. you will probably find that one clocks higher stable speeds than the other.
its very likely the proc in your phone just cannot handle the overclocks that the next person's could.
Like pirate said, no two pieces of hardware are identical. Sort of shows how much variance there can be in a manufacturing process. Id guess theres a few chips that come off the same line that arent stable at 1.2 ghz, but they dont make it to the devices, whereas one that can handle a higher clock will. (No sense tossing one that exceeds minimum requirements, thatd just be throwing good hardware away)
You could try nudgin the voltage up and seeing how it behaves, just use caution.

To get mine to overclock to 1.4 and 1.6Ghz I had to actually INCREASE the voltage settings via Voltage control app. So my settings are: 1.6Ghz= 1475mV and 1.4Ghz=1325mV
Try those out and see if is better for you. I tried undervolting the higher voltages and would either lockup or reboot instantly until I tried adding voltages. So you may need to play with your settings to get it to work for you.

Yup, or if they want to sell a "premium" device with a higher clock rate, they will take the parts that test well at 1.4 and sell them as such - meaning parts rated 1.2 will be LESS likely to be overclockable if a device comes out with CPUs rated at 1.4 - like the Galaxy Note did.
Before, anything that could meet the requirements of stable at 1.2 was sold to any Galaxy S II - but now, the premium parts are going into the Note.

I am having the same issue as the original poster on my new GS2. I will have to try the settings you mention but would it be possible to do this and also apply /UV to the remaining lower (1000ghz to 200ghz) processor speeds and maintain stability?

So I overclocked my GSII to 1.6Ghz, and ran benchmarks and it was blazing fast. So what's the point of overclocking other than running benchmarks? I'd rather not have my processor running at 1.6Ghz all the time and draining battery power. I actually prefer underclocking to save power. So my question is - how else can I benefit from overclocking my device?

OP even if you crank it up to 1.6GHz, unless your isolating that step, your phones not using that clock speed unless your doing sh*t on your phone. It will increase how fast apps or menu's open navagating throughout the phone. Your making the CPU think faster so your phone ends up doing its tasks little and big ...faster
But dude.. Googling the benefits of OC could have giving you an answer ..and FASTER. Lol

Overclocking is entertaining. But I'm running the Unnamed rom on my device and have it UNDER clocked to 800mhz. Crazy good battery life and zero lag.
Overclocking is pointless as it runs everything great already. I'm waiting to overclock until my phone is outdated and my contracts about to expire.
While its rather easy to do there really isn't any benefit to overclocking the SGSII. Yes, it'll run a little faster and your Angry Birds might run smoother (really? ), but it'll also mean a little more heat and more battery drain all to accomplish something you really won't be able to get any real advantage from.

For this phone, it's pretty much useless. The phone runs great without the faster clock speeds.
On the other hand, if it was a snapdragon processor, you'd need 1.5 GHz just to be marketable next to this phone (and 1.8GHz to perform as well in day to day usage.)

Most people overclock for a smoother/snappier experience. I notice that roughly 20% increase in scrolling/tabbing around. Also you can think of it like this:
1.4ghz will finish tasks faster then 1.2, that way taking less battery. You could also undervolt that 1.4 to 1.2 (1275mV), so your finishing tasks quicker while draining no more then stock.
I switch between 1.4 and 1.0 every other day it seems. 2 months later, still looking for the right one for me. 1.6 should only be for benchmarking imo, epeen.

It's not that simple.
There are dozens of bottlenecks in these devices (and any other computer), and 9 times out of 10, it's NOT the processor. Persistant storage, RAM, bus speeds, etc - all those things will ensure that a 10% bump in processor speed will NOT give you a 10% decrease in run time for a given typical application. In many cases, you'll see no speed increase at all, as it takes the same amount of time to flush to persistant storage no matter how fast the write cache fills.
I'm not suggesting that a person shouldn't O/C, but don't be surprised when going from 1200MHz to 1400MHz makes no visible difference other than the battery draining slightly quicker.
I know someone is going to respond that the processor will bump back down to a slower speed and therefore it runs at the higher speed for less time, etc. However, unless you have the governor set to poll for usage so often that the governer is driving your clocks up to max, it's not going to poll often enough to make much (if any) difference.
Think of it this way: We both own a mustang, but mine is a V6 at 220HP and yours is a V8 at 300HP. In theory, yours can accel faster and maintain a higher top speed. In reality, neither one of us can go faster than the car in front of us (but you'll burn more gas doing it.) (Of course, you'll have more fun in yours.)
I hope this helps with a very common misconception.

Very true. Also I am guessing in gaming, that OC will drain your battery quite well.
Consider I mostly do Web browsing on my phone (I need a tablet), 1.4 is a much better browser experience imo. Worth the 100mV.

While for now Overclocking is mainly just done for fun im hoping that closer to my upgrade time that i will be overclocking for more actical reasons. That is the way it was for my Captivate. I enjoy trying to push my hardware to its limits. Ive gotten my GSII so far to a stable 1700mhz but i think i can squeak out a little more speed especially with the gpu down clocked a little. I run it at 1400MHZ Though with the gpu forced at 267mhz.

This morning I restarted my prime and im looking at system tuner pro...
All 4 cores are active and stuck on either 475mhz or 1.2mhz!
I didn't change anything...governer is interactive 102-1.6mhz limit....the cores wont turn off or scale down. It would usually scale down to 102mhz and turn off 2 cores...but they're all online...
FAST is good but it's killing my battery =P

Pretty sire this is across the board for the most part. This happened after update to ICS or last update. Ive noticed it also but it scales to other frequencies also. Doesn't seem to effect battery too much. Your best bet if you worried about battery is to throw it in power savings mode in Asus quick settings. But no matter what mode its in, it seems to like to stay near maxed out. Maybe Asus adjusted the frequency timing to speed up things in ICS.

Yeah, I've had the same problem since the ICS update, but still can't find a solution, so I'm waitng for recovery and back to HC.. And, btw, it's killing my battery - it barely holds a whole day since then..
This seems like a plausible explanation for all the reboots people are seeing. With ICS the processor is kept in a more active state which uncovers wafer defects and heats up the SoC until it goes into protection mode.
Some processors handle the load better than others and it seems the spread is veeeery wide. nVidia is probably supplying Asus with parts from all bins, if they even bother to quality check and rate their parts after coming off the production lines.
I would argue that nVidia's thresholds for what is considered a passable Tegra 3 chip are way too low for real world applications.

Maybe. I can run overclocked to 1.6Ghz n still be fine no reboots. Like you said, not all chips exactly the same though. Small variances between all chips.
I'm hoping/assuming ASUS is aware of this, but just in case they're not, has anyone brought this to Gary's attention?

I'm sure they do know already. Probably amped the frequency timing up so ICS can stay as smooth as it is. It may get adjusted in new update we supposed to get any day now. New update "supposedly" fixes alot of issues.

Just took a look on system tuner, mine still scales down to 102Mhz. Not all 4 cores on all the time. It does like to stay in the higher range though alot. It all depends on what you doing and what you have running in background also.
mine used to scale down to 102mhz as well...and usually with the 3rd and 4th core offline

How did you get to overclock? I rooted mine, but had to return it because of problems. However, I couldn't overclock it either.
What's yur secret?
Update: Did a factory reset and all 4 cores are still online 425mhz-1.2 =(
Seems like my i/o speed just got worse and now there's severe lag...
*sigh* - will just wait for unlocked bootloader

Where you been? Lol we've overclocked for a good while now. Head over into Android developement section of prime. Then check out the "Vipercontrol" thread. Very easy to install n setup.

That's how its supposed to be. It doesn't run at top speed full time..lol your battery wouldn't lastlong at all if it did that. It only hit tops speeds when needed. Then it scales back when not needed anymore.
As far as your timing showing only a few seconds at top speed, all that means is you didn't do anything the prime needed top speeds for.
If you want to run at full speeds all the time I have your solution. If you rooted get System tuner app. Then open app up. Go to CPU tweaks. There it shows you what all 4 cores are running a piece in real time. The governor should be on default interactive mode. All you do it put governor on performance mode. Then raise your minimum speed up to the Max. Now your prime will be running at top speeds all the time. Now beware though, expect battery to drain alot faster.
I did that trick with my overclock n can have all 4 cores maxed out to 1.6Ghz at once. Battery drains faster than Asus performance mode though. As far as speeds go though, I can put my prime in stock powersavings mode, lowest power settings, n everything still moves fast n fluid. Same with heavy duty games also. There's nothing out on Android yet to really need overclocking power yet. PRIME handles anything you throw at it in stock settings. OVERCLOCKING is just for kicks really andbto make things that much faster. Not really needed. Overclocking will be better once bootloader unlocked and we get undervolting paired with overclocking. That way we can get great battery life and more power. Nothing wrong with overclocking though. I'd say if you not worried about battery life or gonna eventually be near a powersource, go for it. Android developement section of Prime. Its called VioerControl Mod. Very easy to install n setup. Works great. Everyone rooted should give it a whirl if you looking for more power or want to push the envelope.

My mistake. I'd forgotten that I'd rebooted since running the benchmarks and gaming, so my CPU Spy values didn't reflect them. I just ran some benchmarks and 1400MHz now shows 18 seconds while 1300MHz now shows 2:08 minutes.
I would still like to see that as running at 1400MHz throughout the benchmarks, so I stand by my statement that some additional tuning is required.

what Firmware specifically are you guys on????
I just downloaded system tuner... I'm running ICS, and my tablet has been rock solid (not a single reboot).
CPU0 is running around 200-400MHz, and the other 3 cores are offline (although core 1 comes online for a bit now and then.) And, my battery life is excellent.... same or better than it was with HC.
To clarify, those of you who are having reboots, are you all seeing all cores on and maxed out all the time?

On the contrary...ever since my tfp decided to keep all cores online and minimum 425mhz speed, I haven't had any lockups or reboots.
But my battery life sucks and my benchmark scores are Still horrible.
The disk I/0 speed is horrendous (as stated in the bonnie++ benchmark thread)

Has this been confirmed to actually work or be better? Were you the one that made that thread with bonnie benchmarks on disk read speeds or something? How much of a difference are the scores after installing the kernel modules in that thread?

at&t note runs on one processor?!

Ok so im rooted and overclocked and was using setcpu then decided i wanna try something different so i tried system tuner! When i checked the cpu it said that one of the processors are off line! Then i pressed the info button and sure enough it says only reading one! So i went through the settings and found force both cores online!
Since then i have no lag and virtually no checkerboarding on the web! Anyway i was just wondering if im the only one who noticed this and maybe it could help those who say that they are still getting lag on they're roms using dag's kernel!
Also i hope devs will notice this thread since i can't post there yet and take advantage of this how ever they can!
Now don't quote me on this but most likely the second core only turns on for processor intensive activities such as high graphics games or multiple programs running at once. I do find it hard to believe that it would be totally disabled. Most likely this is done to conserve battery.

Nope i checked that i had 10 apps open two were games (dead space and gta III) One cpu online even on performance! I see 50 views i hope others chime in and let us know what you are thinking
Btw they Did this i heard to the galaxy nexus with the tiomap 1.2 so we'll see what others find

Okay if this really is the case I could also see at&t disabling the second core totally to save battery because of lte but i guess it will take a dev that has more experience with how qualcomm's multicore cpus work in android. report back with differences in battery life like how much faster does it drain now that both cores are forced on.
if you want both cores on click on boot settings and enable force all cpus online. that heats up your phone and eats more battery though+I do not see any benefits doing that.

I've had it like this for 4 days on average i will take of the charger at 8am now is 8:30pm and i have 27% but i use my navigation for my Job! By 10:30 or so ill have 15% and recharge!

Same, but having a better processor helps. Like exynos. I bet once we update to ics if it ever happens, the differences will be only minor between processors, as it runs so nice.

Really? I switched Roms twice today and had to reset that each time! Cpu.0 online Cpu.1 offline! Like i said am i the only one? Lets hear from more people and let us know of any lag or rendering changes after turning on both cpu's! Battery too, i'll post mine tomorrow.

Not entirely true.. the Galaxy Nexus has a kernel governor that turns one core off when the SCREEN IS OFF, but not when the phone is being used. Multiple kernel creators have since implemented this into their kernels. It is called "hot plugging" and it just turns CPU 1 offline when the screen is off and turns it back on when the screen is on

Just checked mine, rooted and OC with DaG's 0.1 version (first version). When I looked, it said the second CPU was offline. Changed it to online, we'll see how that impacts battery life.
How much of an advantage is smartassv2 anyway?
I just tried this with system tuner and both cpus were working but wone was of and on and zero was always on.
I am running stock rooted. If you just sit yhere and watch it you will see tje sevond core fires and shuts down alot.

Same for me (CPU 0 on, CPU1 off, most times) and I'll say I have noticed no real changes in functionality (speed, rendering, etc) or battery life...
I guess jury is still out or is this a YMMV kind of thing?
I installed system runner and watched the cpus. One was on and the other kicked in periodically
Mine said it was offline as well. Forced it on and am not noticing any difference in speed or temp.
Ill leave it like this to test it further.

As far as I know yes you must have super user permission to alter such system activities
I don't know why everyone is in such a rush to force the second core online, it turns on and off when it needs to.
