hi everyone..
I have installed Root SD Cards by Albert Wertz, it worked awesome for the past 3-4 months.. and recently started showing browsing issues..dolphin browser take ages or doens't load pages with flash.. and nook hanged a couple of times..and today it hanged again.. I tired to restart but it keeps booting..shows N and then again N.. please suggest me what to do.. I'm searching the threads..but your help would be great..
desperately awaiting reply..
thanks..
forgot to mention.. mine is a 16gb nook tablet..
Its not bricked unless you entered recovery and formatted the system (or other partition) .
If you are trying to get back to stock, create bootable SD card recovery, and factory reset. That should do it. Do not format rom.or any partition you're unsure of coz you might brick it.
If you're looking to upgrade to cm, download a rom and flash it. (Look for roms and instructions in development section)
Satan posted while I was writing.
Do what he suggests, and if that doesn't work (I'm sure it does!):
Try the unbrick "repart.img" if it's OK to completely wipe the unit and return it to 1.4.0
A search should let you find it easy enough.

and can I upgrade as you have suggested to other roms from the current state of my nook ?
Well all roms are great, but make a bootable cwm from that link you posted, (I'd suggest the method 2 in first post, will give you bootable cwm5) and install cm7, since its the only rom that can be installed from cwm5. Once its up and working (and you're relieved that its not paperweight) , you can update recovery and flash newer roms.

Assuming if you don't want go back to stock, I'd suggest go for a CM10 ROM (as CM7 and CM9 never got passed beta (I used to have same kind of problems with CM7 you are having) and both are no longer supported). You can use the process outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1 to flash any CM10 ROM you choose: just substitute in that ROM's zip file in step 2(c).

It will do this (booting from internal emmc /boot) if it does not find a bootable SD card (e.g., a card created via steps 1 and 2(a) in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1).

Thanks for that link. I am going to have a look at this.
Actually I don't think, that it's the bug with the /system wipe which is causing this problem, since everything else works fine.
But if I am going to reflash everything, I gonna give that a try
The device is fresh rooted - do I need a custom radio or other prerequisites, to run this rom?

Let's just hope, everything works fine this evening
Bad news
Just spent the last couple of hours installing everything once again:
- updated to latest recovery
- wiped everything (even wiped /system manually via adb)
- flashed cm7
- flashed gapps
- reboot
- flashed latest darktremor apps2sd
- restore apps and setup rom
everything worked fine again, but after playing around with it, the keys started to flash again, screen freezes and system crashes (for now without the black screen from first post) - I'm not able to obtain the systemlog, so I can't even get a direction.
Any further suggestions please?
Edit:
In the logcat i get this line every 3 seconds:
D - 1776 - WifiService - ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED pluggedType:2
Even if there is nothing plugged in - but only when wifi is turned on.
But the device also crashes, if wifi is not activated
I got exactly the same error screen from the first page this morning again
Another thing I noticed: The battery behaviour is very strange. I had 100% - crashed after 10 min -> 19% after reboot - but counting slowly up again. Now I am @ 46%.
edit2:
After removing app2sd and fix connection issues for gapps, everything went fine for a while. But once again: error screen appears >.<
I am going to flash .void now - and hope the issues were rom-based and not an error in the device

I now want to breath some fresh life in to it. I am thinking about changing to a custom rom. But I am totally new to this, and doesn't want to end up with an bricked phone. What should I do first? I see there are many good guides, but I am not sure which I should take since my phone is so outdated. Does anybody got any suggestion?

That won't work. You have to change to the new baseband before you use CM9. Upgrade to 2.3.3 first, then flash the rom

Since I believe the rest of the posts are a bit too much for the beginner, I hope this post breaks it down. I'm bad at using the forum editing tools , so forgive me for bad editing.
First, your phone is old baseband. Old baseband means that the software used to access the sim card and make calls is old. It does not mean that they are no good ROMs for it. One of the most stable and up to date rom I found was OMGB (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376344). But the bad news is that you cannot try any of the nightlies of CM9 or the deliciousness of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwhich).
This can be overcome by installing new baseband, which involves installing a new stock rom of Gingerbread. It is not as simple as flashing a zip so the easiest of the guides I found is this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301489). I personally recommend you upgrade to new baseband and let me know if you don't understand the process.
Here are some good ROMs for O1 is found.
AOKP (4.4) (New Baseband) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613712)
Mik_OS Rom (2.3.7) (Old Baseband) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354)
SlimGen v1.6.0 (2.3.7) (Old/New Baseband) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463495)
These are some of the few of the many great ones. I currently upgraded to new baseband and am rocking AOKP and so far, I'm speechless by the CM9 awesomeness. I hope I helped. Please click the thank you button if I helped.

Well guys, I decided to remake my thread for the new version of this app since it covers both 8gb and 16gb versions of the nook tablet.
--information:
THIS HAS NO TESTING! If something is broken, it's not my fault. Just report it in a non-urgent way and I'll fix it.
Well, I decided to release this app in a separate thread so I can keep track of the new version better. This one has been fixed up (still a visual CluserF*** but it's not supposed to be pretty, only get you an internal recovery up and running.)
Problems:
None with my app, however there are sure to be a few bugs on the recovery. Also: this flashes to internal, that's why I included a reset to stock button!
How to fix a borked install: CLICK ME CLICK ME FOR THE FIX!
(Note, you need superuser otherwise not a damn thing will happen!)
Download link:
here - md5 = 21ab80c09b678c2e9c93e0a2c70bbba2
*Note: Guys, I'm really having cashflow problems for a lot of things that I need to do (which is why I actually sold my nook) so I would like to ask for a bit of donations. Don't want to force you all to pay a couple bucks through market, etc. :/ Thanks.
- Other Note, you don't have to donate, would just appreciate it if you did.
Instructions:
Just click the button that has the recovery you want to flash. It's really simple. Screenshots, credit, and changelog will be posted in the next post.
Wait 10 seconds for the flash to finish then you can reboot if you want.
Please don't mirror
Changelog:
Code:
2.5: Cleaned up code a bit more and added cwm for 8gb + 16gb
2.0: Cleaned up the code, added better md5 checking now it won't flash without a good md5.
1.5.5: Fixed md5 hash checking
1.5: Added Reboot Recovery button
1.1: Fixed filename issue for stock recovery
1.0: Initial release.

Has this been incorporated into the download file? Does it provide for selecting whether we want 1.4.0 or 1.4.2?
FYI, link is dead after goo.im went down.. Also, did you have a newer version with a newer recovery? I could only find an older APK (version 2.5) which flashes 5.0.2.8 - looks like the newest version is 5.5.0.4 from what I'm seeing...

post this in Q&A, not here. also in nook tablet general i believe there was a guide how to get it to stock. and what rom were you using? all cm10 roms, and several cm9 roms will reboot occassionally, its a 3.x kernel issue. use chrmhoffmann's CM9 for one with no reboots, or you have to use cm7 (android 2.3)
Link is still down.
Just a thought why not pm the Dev instead of repeatedly posting in a thread he may or may not look at any time soon

I had to take to to the B&N bookstore and they couldn't fix it either. I got an exchange.
Remove any SD, then hold power + N for 15 seconds.

I'll try that - next time it happens.
Too late now, though. I have a different Nook Tablet.
Funny - but the B&N tech person didn't suggest this.
By the way - this happened when I tried restoring with the parted.img brick fix. It didn't unbrick my nook (which was stuck going to CWM Recover - couldn't get past it).
Hello,
Could you pls help a noob with a rooting problem? I attempted to root my ICS AT&T Galaxy Note i-717 using Odin3 v 1.85 and a pda.tar file. Prior to that, I had checked and confirmed the USB drivers are installed (I have Kies software installed on the PC. However, folliwing the succesful flash of pda.tar I got the phone stuck at the Samsung screen. I could still get to the download screen. However, the phone would not go pass that screen. Can you pls tell me what I did wrong/guide me w simple steps on how to fix the phone and finish the root? I have the read many different root treads but I find them confusing. Treads are ponting at different files to be frashed/installed on the phone. Thanks very much.
This happens from time to time...don't worry.
Reboot phone in download mode, connect phone, reflash kernel.
A few things: use stock samsung cable. Use back of computer usb port. Reboot computer before you try again. Re download the kernel to be sure your file is not corrupted. Make sure phone battery is more than 80%.

Rangercaptain,
Thanks very much. Where can I get the kernel from and which one/which file do I need to flash? Also, how do I flash it? Do I use Odin or another method? Again Thanks a lot!

Make sure Kies is closed
Yes, good suggestion. I would reboot the computer, put the phone in download, open Odin3, then plug in phone.
All that is well explained in the thread.
Problem solved

Stuck at Samsung
I have the same issue tho have tried troubleshooting and could really use some extra help.
Updated to ATT stock ICS update a few months ago. Everything workin fine.
Wanted to root it so I could back everything up not to lose anything when moving to JB.
Rooted by flashing Da_G's pda.tar, reboot, and then flashed 2.3.3.0 TWRP
Noticed it was stuck at Samsung.
Here's where I'm kickin myself because I should have backed it up before all this, but I waited because I figured root doesn't wipe data!
Entered TWRP, backed up.
Now what I've tried to fix it... and failed
1. Reflashed pda.tar about 5 times
2. Found a stock pda "pda-odin-att-stock.tar", flashed (fixed) but it's stock setup and contacts and other google services don't work, lost homescreen icon placement and all other settings.
3. TWRP: Restore all = stuck at Samsung again
4. Repeat 2 and Restore only System
5. Repeat 2 and Restore only Data
6. Repeat 2 and flash pda.tar = boots, but same thing with it all stock, so I restore and it's stuck again.
It's my wife's phone and she has contacts that aren't saved in Google, to-do lists saved in app data files, and to be honest, she said everything better be exactly the same after updating (which I promised it would be since the plan was to root, backup, update, and restore), so I'm kinda trying to save my hide. PLEASE HELP me save my ass ha!
Other things to note: I just rooted a new phone about 30mins prior with the exact same root and TWRP files and it went very smooth, no issues.
Using a Samsung original cable on a laptop. Phone Battery was ~30% when I did all the steps, but since then read that battery should be higher so swapped out to fully charged battery and retried the steps.
Using the root kernel you did, basically flashed a Gingerbread kernel over an ICS rom. (Doesn't work)
Your best bet at this point, is too flash a rooted ICS build from bigfau ...(located in the super thread stock section)
Just flash using TWRP ....BUT !!!
make sure you wipe the dalvik cache, system cache, and system before flashing the rooted ICS build.
Once the rom is flashed, you will be stock and rooted.
Regarding data you have lost with no backup....start begging forgiveness now ....it's gone ....g

Wouldn't I be able to just flash an ICS Kernel to undo the GB kernel and set things straight? Or is the whole thing ruined already?
I have the data/app and data/data files. If all's really lost, I'll just put JB on it. If I copy the data/app and data/data files onto the new image will all the apps with their settings/data be restored at least?
Yes, flash the correct kernel.
I think what happened to me is the OS got deleted cuz once I flashed a rom I was good to go!
***UPDATE***
As of my latest post here I'm now semi-bricked I think
It's been ages since I last messed with my nook tablet and trying to remember all the little things is tough. Can someone help me boot into my CWM recovery? My goal here is to upgrade from CM7 to CM10. When I hold the Power Key + N button until the black screen with the N comes up. Then I let go of Power Key and remain holding the N key. Then the screen changes and asks me if I would like to factory reset my device (looks to be the internal boot menu and not CWM related).
What am I doing wrong?

Assuming you're using an internal flash you just wait for it to boot into cyanoboot. Hold down the n button to go to the menu and select recovery. Download the zip file and gapps files from where you want, but 12/31 is the final release.

I keep holding N even while the factory reset screen is visible? Or do I go through the prompts to "factory reset" but it actually ends up taking me to CWM? I just didn't want to accidentally start factory resetting the device and end up bricking my tablet!
EDIT: Yes, it's an internal flash of CWM/CM7
EDIT 2: Just continuing to hold down the N key while the Factory Reset message is showing doesn't work
EDIT 3: I downloaded that Nook Tablet Recovery Flasher App. I flashed the latest CWM and it was all successful. I used the app to "Reboot into Recovery." When it reboots it goes to the initial N screen then it changes to a different N screen. The second N is a little bigger and has a more detailed gradient color on it. Then my screen goes black and nothing happens.
That recovery flasher app did nothing good for me. At all. If it did anything, it flashed CWM 5.x. wich was of no use to me!
While trying to get things to work I also invovled TWRP and then I was in deep trouble... Had to use the "repart.img" to get out of bootloop. Not saying this is what you have to do though. You're hopefully in better luck!
You could try a bootable CWM sd card instead to get into CWM and maybe go on from there.
Re: Boot into recovery
Don't hold down anything when the nook is turned on. Holding the button when it starts execute the factory reset. Wait for it to boot. If it boots to stock is then cwm is not internally installed. If it boots to cyanobot then hold down n button to go to menu and recovery. It will go to recovery.IMG.
So when you turn on the nook don't press anything. Wait to see what it does. If nothing then make the card for flashing cm10.
Blah, I think I bricked it somehow (or at least semi-bricked it). I can't get it to boot past this stupid N screen anymore. All I did was try to reboot into recovery again from that recovery flasher app but ever since then I can't get back into the OS. I'll probably have to dig into how to unbrick this tablet, bring it to stock, then get onto CM10. Any suggestions?
Powering on the device as normal brings me to the initial "N" screen then a new one comes up with a bigger N and then it eventually turns back off after about 5 seconds

Reflash stock with this repart.img
http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/
Write the image to an SD card, put it in your nook and when the green check mark pops up take out the SD card.
I had great success with the repart.img that is used in this guide: http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/
Downloaded, burned the card, popped it in the Tablet, booted and kept my fingers crossed... Worked great for me!

Well that was ridiculously easy to do. Thanks! I know have the tablet 100% back to stock and unrooted. I just need to track down idiot proof instructions on how to root and install CM10 and I'll be golden.
Thanks again!
I did this when I was a complete newbie. I wrote it down with the thought "if I can do it ANYONE can!"
It's not elegant, it's not sophisticated, but it works... (Kind of like me, come to think of it...)

Ended up going with Installing CM10 Internally on Nook Tablet but your guide looks great too. I'm now running CM10 and everything looks great so far with a few minor exceptions (youtube crashes for me and netflix won't play video but audio comes through)

YouTube crashes a lot with all the cm10+ versions. You can get better playback using the browser instead of the app though.

Interesting, that may be a problem. 99.99% of my tablet browsing consists of reading e-books, chatting on GroupMe, browsing reddit, and watching youtube videos. If YouTube is going to be a problem maybe I should find the best CM7 version out there and flashh
What ROM did you go with? I'm running Succulent's CM10 from Dec 31, from Iamafanof website. I haven't had any Youtube issues.
Not that I run Youtube much, so maybe I shouldn't say too much, but my little 8,5 year old buddy does a lot of Youtubing on her NT running the same setup and she hasn'r complained in the couple of months she has had it.
