***UPDATE***
As of my latest post here I'm now semi-bricked I think
It's been ages since I last messed with my nook tablet and trying to remember all the little things is tough. Can someone help me boot into my CWM recovery? My goal here is to upgrade from CM7 to CM10. When I hold the Power Key + N button until the black screen with the N comes up. Then I let go of Power Key and remain holding the N key. Then the screen changes and asks me if I would like to factory reset my device (looks to be the internal boot menu and not CWM related).
What am I doing wrong?

Assuming you're using an internal flash you just wait for it to boot into cyanoboot. Hold down the n button to go to the menu and select recovery. Download the zip file and gapps files from where you want, but 12/31 is the final release.

I keep holding N even while the factory reset screen is visible? Or do I go through the prompts to "factory reset" but it actually ends up taking me to CWM? I just didn't want to accidentally start factory resetting the device and end up bricking my tablet!
EDIT: Yes, it's an internal flash of CWM/CM7
EDIT 2: Just continuing to hold down the N key while the Factory Reset message is showing doesn't work
EDIT 3: I downloaded that Nook Tablet Recovery Flasher App. I flashed the latest CWM and it was all successful. I used the app to "Reboot into Recovery." When it reboots it goes to the initial N screen then it changes to a different N screen. The second N is a little bigger and has a more detailed gradient color on it. Then my screen goes black and nothing happens.
That recovery flasher app did nothing good for me. At all. If it did anything, it flashed CWM 5.x. wich was of no use to me!
While trying to get things to work I also invovled TWRP and then I was in deep trouble... Had to use the "repart.img" to get out of bootloop. Not saying this is what you have to do though. You're hopefully in better luck!
You could try a bootable CWM sd card instead to get into CWM and maybe go on from there.
Re: Boot into recovery
Don't hold down anything when the nook is turned on. Holding the button when it starts execute the factory reset. Wait for it to boot. If it boots to stock is then cwm is not internally installed. If it boots to cyanobot then hold down n button to go to menu and recovery. It will go to recovery.IMG.
So when you turn on the nook don't press anything. Wait to see what it does. If nothing then make the card for flashing cm10.
Blah, I think I bricked it somehow (or at least semi-bricked it). I can't get it to boot past this stupid N screen anymore. All I did was try to reboot into recovery again from that recovery flasher app but ever since then I can't get back into the OS. I'll probably have to dig into how to unbrick this tablet, bring it to stock, then get onto CM10. Any suggestions?
Powering on the device as normal brings me to the initial "N" screen then a new one comes up with a bigger N and then it eventually turns back off after about 5 seconds

Reflash stock with this repart.img
http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/
Write the image to an SD card, put it in your nook and when the green check mark pops up take out the SD card.
I had great success with the repart.img that is used in this guide: http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/
Downloaded, burned the card, popped it in the Tablet, booted and kept my fingers crossed... Worked great for me!

Well that was ridiculously easy to do. Thanks! I know have the tablet 100% back to stock and unrooted. I just need to track down idiot proof instructions on how to root and install CM10 and I'll be golden.
Thanks again!
I did this when I was a complete newbie. I wrote it down with the thought "if I can do it ANYONE can!"
It's not elegant, it's not sophisticated, but it works... (Kind of like me, come to think of it...)

Ended up going with Installing CM10 Internally on Nook Tablet but your guide looks great too. I'm now running CM10 and everything looks great so far with a few minor exceptions (youtube crashes for me and netflix won't play video but audio comes through)

YouTube crashes a lot with all the cm10+ versions. You can get better playback using the browser instead of the app though.

Interesting, that may be a problem. 99.99% of my tablet browsing consists of reading e-books, chatting on GroupMe, browsing reddit, and watching youtube videos. If YouTube is going to be a problem maybe I should find the best CM7 version out there and flashh
What ROM did you go with? I'm running Succulent's CM10 from Dec 31, from Iamafanof website. I haven't had any Youtube issues.
Not that I run Youtube much, so maybe I shouldn't say too much, but my little 8,5 year old buddy does a lot of Youtubing on her NT running the same setup and she hasn'r complained in the couple of months she has had it.

THESE FILES WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK FOR YOUR PHONE IF IT IS NOT A VERIZON FASCINATE
First, download and install the samsung drivers found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Then download odin from here: https://sites.google.com/a/imnuts.net/android/update-to-dj05/Odin.zip?attredirects=0&d=1
Then download the clockwork package from here: http://goo.gl/HELdr
If you have a lag fix installed, remove it. This is my opinion, and is completely optional. But i do not recommend the lag fixes, as the ones that install / work on the fascinate do nothing really, just wait for voodoo port
Then:
Put phone into download mode.
-Turn off phone
-Pull battery
-Press vol down button while plugging into computer
-Should show a yellow triangle
Open odin on pc
-Odin should show a yellow bar with a com port showing that it detects your phone
Click "PDA" button and select the CWMrecovery.tar you downloaded earlier
Click start
This will reboot your phone when complete. This flashes both the kernel and the recovery partition to enable you to flash update.zips signed with test keys. You will need to download Rom Manager from the market and select flash Clockwork Mod and select "fascinate"
To use clockwork, you can reboot recovery and Rom Manager, or cold boot into recovery (power off phone, power back on while holding both volume keys). If you cold boot into recovery you need to select apply update.zip and it will launch ClockworkMod.
Optional: ClockworkMod update.zip file (place this in your sdcard's root, and only download this if you cannot get into rom manager) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/458252/Fascinate Files/update.zip

And without ludeboy, well, i wouldnt even be able to get into download mode to fix my phone in the first place
Thank you!
I didn't pull the battery, just turned the phone off while holding the volume down button. Maybe I should have, as it is stuck on the Nandroid backup on Linux.ex2.
Edit, spoke too soon. I unplugged the USB cable, and is finished updating. Bring on the kernels! I want to see what this does clocked.
If you do a Nandroid backup with the lagifx installed it takes a LONG time
edit: I have done all of my odin work with the battery in and have had 0 problems
also remember, if you try to boot into recovery and you dont see it. FLASH THE RECOVERY IN ROM MANAGER TWICE.

Yes, nandroid backups will take a LONG time to complete if you are using a lagfix. I would start removing the lagfix now, we have something much much better planned for you guys.
And pulling the battery isnt necessary, just insures that new people get it done right, eliminates some questions / problems.
Removed lagfix, and confirmed that everything here works.

stock roms can be found in my odin restore thread, at least as close to stock as we can get right now.
Thanks ya'll, you guys are awesome!!!!!!!
So I have a question....may be a dumb one....but why is it called Odin? Is that Samsung specific? The reason I ask is Odin was a code name for the 9550 storm and so it confuses me. Thanks and sorry for off topic.
success
it worked perfectly as described...
i removed lagfix first
ran ROM Manager (premium i flashed CWM twice, just to be sure...
i backed it up in ROM Manager.. when i rebooted to recovery from RM i got an MD5 checksum error when trying to restore..
I then ran a backup while in recovery.. during that backup i got no /sdcard/.android_secure found but it seemed to complete.
I used restore created from nandroid and it completed error free. (tho it did take a while, even with no lagfix (lots of data, apparently))
My phone booted just fine afterwards.... but it did sit for a while at the VZW splash screen. it made be nervous.. but i was patient
THANK YOU!
EDIT: In RM... i renamed the backup that i made in CMR and then chose to restore... it booted into CMR as expected and started restoring... completed successfully.
when it completes booting... i get a system alarm tone that doesnt go away until i use the notification pulldown... it did after both times i used the recovery.
Now that we have clockworkmod we can remove apps as long as we backed up right? I was getting rid of some bloat but stopped before i went to far. Sorry for sounding like a noob
Ok guys, first of all I have to say that you cannot access recovery without something like quickboot -or- rom manager so please get your preferred app for this.
I AM NOT LIABLE IF YOU SOMEHOW MANAGE TO **** UP A ONE CLICK APP! Do not ask me for support. Learn something and fix it yourselves.
Next, I will say that AlbertWertz will be making a video, but this is -really- simple.
All you do is click the button corresponding with what you want to flash.
I will work on aesthetics later but for now, it works, checks md5's, and flashes the images.
Problems:
None with my app, however there are sure to be a few bugs on the recovery. Also: this flashes to internal, that's why I included a reset to stock button!

It was still uploading. It's done now.
Also no, you shouldn't have to uninstall his CWM. It's the same image, just simply flashes over the old one. It just helps to be able to flash whatever whenever you need it.
dumb question
which one is better to flash, or can you do both
and then switch between on boot
cuz on my xperia x10, i can switch between, both on boot...
Stock recovery is what you need if you plan to use the unroot method, etc. CWM is used for custom software / firmware flashing...No, you can't switch between. You flash CWM if you want to flash zips and if you want to have stock recovery again which doesnt give you a menu, you flash stock.
I'll probably end up packaging my root mods into the flashable zip. I'll see if cfoesh or whatever wants to package up snowball mod.

Hey, wanted to say thanks and wanted to say this: flashed CWM and at first I couldn't access recovey with n+Power, but now I can. Tried shutting down and then n+Power, nothing. Then used ROM Manager's "reboot into recovery" and it booted like normal instead of going to recovery.. then ROM Toolbox and used and "shutdown"... Started back up with n+Power and it worked. Tried again a few times with normal boots and shutdowns, then n+Power and it goes to recovery.. Hoping I remembered exactly what I did but hey, it works like it should on any device now
EDIT-Oh, apparently if I let go of the power button too quick then it doesn't go into recovery... just tried again with quick letoff and booted normal even though I had the 'n' button firmly pressed the whole time.. Gave it a 2 second count next time before letting go and went into recovery

Yes I have that on my Asus transformer, like you say it has all the different options in one popup menu. Much more straight forward
Thing is, if it's a sizeable thing to code, is it going to be worthwhile considering cm7/9 is hopefully not far away ?
I know CM9 development seems to have halted (nothing updated on OP in a decent while) but it could still be a lot of work for something that will only be used for a very short period of time.
technically, i should be able to use this to flash back to "complete stock" (including removing cwm)?
It's used to either flash over stock recovery, or over CWM. Depending on which option you choose. It's the same process, just different files. That's it.
Fantastic work. You've made it easy to do and I thank you!

Working with a net--restore is working!
Many thanks to bauwks, nemith, goncezilla, and indirect for bringing clockwork mod to the NT. I'm a thorough-going noob and always will be, so I've been waiting for a custom recovery so I could have a nandroid backup to save my hide (and my ui) when I go a-themin'.
For example, I just hacked up my framework-res to try to get rid of some horrible list separators, which of course completely broke the tablet. Power-N, restore from internal sd card, and I'm ready to break things again.
Thanks!

post this in Q&A, not here. also in nook tablet general i believe there was a guide how to get it to stock. and what rom were you using? all cm10 roms, and several cm9 roms will reboot occassionally, its a 3.x kernel issue. use chrmhoffmann's CM9 for one with no reboots, or you have to use cm7 (android 2.3)
Link is still down.
Just a thought why not pm the Dev instead of repeatedly posting in a thread he may or may not look at any time soon

did you ever solve this? The same thing happened to me. I had to exchange the tablet at B&N.
Thats just stock recovery...

When this came up for me, I couldn't get it to restart - wouldn't boot at all.
parted.img didn't work (unbrick method) - tried CWM SD card - no dice.
I had to take to to the B&N bookstore and they couldn't fix it either. I got an exchange.
Remove any SD, then hold power + N for 15 seconds.

I'll try that - next time it happens.
Too late now, though. I have a different Nook Tablet.
Funny - but the B&N tech person didn't suggest this.
By the way - this happened when I tried restoring with the parted.img brick fix. It didn't unbrick my nook (which was stuck going to CWM Recover - couldn't get past it).
I had my tablet running CM7 and I'm not sure what went wrong but I can't recover it. When I boot it I get this screen

So far I've tried Adam Outlers recovery method as well as trying to adb the partitions but I can't get the tablet to boot off an SD card. When I try to adb into the device I cannot see the device ID on the nook but I can see my Droid X2.
Anybody?

I'm not a techie but I know some of the tablets will boot off of the SD card when the tablet is pulled in, the charger would work. Push the power and "N" at the same time.

Most NT will boot off an SD card only from its power-off state and upon insertion of a powered USB cable.
Ok. I can now get the nook to boot into cmr, but not into Adams recovery. When I try to boot into Adams method all I get is a multitude of colors across the screen. I let it do its thing leaving it plugged in until the battery died, still no love. Anything else? I'm willing to pledge money (at least $10 but if I can get more together I will) to whomever gives me the solution. And offering the $$ is my way of saying I know this may take some effort and I want to say thanks to whoever puts in the time to help.

I take it you have tried the super easy way with "repart.img" and it didn't work?

I think this method might solve your missing BCB problem. To execute it you'll need CWM on a bootable SDcard (which you can get from here if needed) and adb shell
on your PC/laptop.
I can boot cmw on an sd card, but I cannot mount boot data so I can reset my boot count. When I boot off the repart image I do get the screen that tells me it's installing new software but I never get a green check nor does it reboot, it just shuts down.

only nook cable works

Even a normal usb cable does not work, only the one that came with the nook. Thanks, but wierd
Hm, my NT can boot off SD using any regular USB cable.
Any other ideas? I'm willing to try anything.

I get same thing in cwm I can't mount as card to redo partitions and when I do regard from as I get a red x. I am lost I have no more options to try. Wish there was a utility to rebuild patrons and return to stock like on my moto Droid bionic and razr
The locked bootloader the moto series has is nice for recovery. It keeps idiots like me from screwing up too bad. But I like having everything open.

First off, what NT do you have 16G or 8G? This will determine the fix and if I can even offer up help.
Also, do you have a couple of sd cards to work with? One is fine, it just makes the process easier with two.

I have the 16 GB and I have 4 cards 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB. I have done everything for the past 4days. I found a adb pusher utility that shows me everything on my nook through adb and I see the sdcards but when I click them they are empty. Try to mount in cwm and troughs me an error. Thanks for the help its my wife's nook. Look for that utility its quite nice.
ok perfect.
I am not in front of a computer right now to see what files they are, but I think you can get back to original stock with a two step flash. I am guessing the privious owner tried to factory reset without stock recovery.

Also Adam's and repart.IMG methods can take several hours (not minutes) to complete. I would suggest running Adam's method overnight. Don't touch it. Just go to bed and check it in the morning. Plug in charger just in case. Report back in the morning after you wake up.

OK, I'm in front of a computer now.
Try this - I just ran this on my own device and it brings it back to stock 1.40. It may or may not work for you, but it is worth a try. It should replace your stock recovery and then allow you to run the acclaim.update.zip file from an SD card.
So first go to Succulent's post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545766 (ignore the subject of the thread, you just need the file in his repository) Scroll down and click on the link for Flash-Restore-Stock.zip. You will need to download the zip file by that name.
Once you have this zip file go into CWM and flash it. I only mention using two SD cards for this because the one I use for CWM only leaves ~15MB of space after setting it up. You will need more space than this.
Go ahead and reboot system. You will most likely be in a bootloop or worse - don't sweat. What you need next is to go to this link from AdamOutler http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402190 and download the file he has in the OP. This is the acclaim_update.zip
put this on the root of an SD card (don't put it in any folders) put it into your NT and turn the thing on. It should start a download process and put the original OS onto your device. After completing the process, you may not be out of the woods yet. You will most likely have to complete 8 failed boots or just try shutting your NT off and turning it back on holding the power and home button at the same time. This will initiate a factory reset and you will be home free back on stock operating system.
Good Luck
Edit: This was for the OP. Sorry Gowboy84, I got the two of you mixed up when you jumped into the thread answering a question I asked the OP. I don't think this will work for you. I noticed in another thread you flashed the 10 touch firmware. You may want to read up on all the "10 touch firmware" Posts, or get help in your own thread.
I have tried Adam's method several times across two SD card and with several d/ls of the file to make sure that I got a good copy and I can't even get the tablet to boot from the SD card with his method. I can get the repart.img method to boot, it runs for about 10 seconds and then it shuts down the nook. When I try to reboot I get nothing (again several d\ls and several cards). I can load CMW and boot into it from an SD card
but then I can't mount any drives when I get into CMW. I've used bn_142_factory_recovery.zip and no love there either.
And as a side note I just want to say thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. This is a $150 investment I've screwed up and just knowing that there's a glimmer of hope here from all of you means a lot to me.
@DaveDoc, I'm off work in 6 hours, I'll try and report back.
hi everyone..
I have installed Root SD Cards by Albert Wertz, it worked awesome for the past 3-4 months.. and recently started showing browsing issues..dolphin browser take ages or doens't load pages with flash.. and nook hanged a couple of times..and today it hanged again.. I tired to restart but it keeps booting..shows N and then again N.. please suggest me what to do.. I'm searching the threads..but your help would be great..
desperately awaiting reply..
thanks..
forgot to mention.. mine is a 16gb nook tablet..
Its not bricked unless you entered recovery and formatted the system (or other partition) .
If you are trying to get back to stock, create bootable SD card recovery, and factory reset. That should do it. Do not format rom.or any partition you're unsure of coz you might brick it.
If you're looking to upgrade to cm, download a rom and flash it. (Look for roms and instructions in development section)
Satan posted while I was writing.
Do what he suggests, and if that doesn't work (I'm sure it does!):
Try the unbrick "repart.img" if it's OK to completely wipe the unit and return it to 1.4.0
A search should let you find it easy enough.

and can I upgrade as you have suggested to other roms from the current state of my nook ?
Well all roms are great, but make a bootable cwm from that link you posted, (I'd suggest the method 2 in first post, will give you bootable cwm5) and install cm7, since its the only rom that can be installed from cwm5. Once its up and working (and you're relieved that its not paperweight) , you can update recovery and flash newer roms.

Assuming if you don't want go back to stock, I'd suggest go for a CM10 ROM (as CM7 and CM9 never got passed beta (I used to have same kind of problems with CM7 you are having) and both are no longer supported). You can use the process outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1 to flash any CM10 ROM you choose: just substitute in that ROM's zip file in step 2(c).

It will do this (booting from internal emmc /boot) if it does not find a bootable SD card (e.g., a card created via steps 1 and 2(a) in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1).
