Anyone else run into the same thing with the virtual keyboard? I don't like the look and feel of the ASUS keyboard, so I've always used the ICS Android one (even on Androwook JB, the JB keyboard can't seem to handle my speed).

The only keyboard worth using in my opinion on a 10.1" tablet is thumb keyboard 4. I can hold the tab portrait or landscape and type easily, the split keyboard is fabulous. I use SwiftKey 3 on my phone, but the tablet winner is hands down thumb keyboard.
I agree... I also use the thumb keyboard and find it is fast and easy to use on a tablet. Having said that I do find myself missing the space bar on the right side and hitting the notification icons which is very annoying. I wish that Google/Asua would either move the notifications to the top or detect when the keyboard is active and disable it so you can't hit it.

I've always used swiftkey, but thanks to everyone's comments I'm trying thumb. Its gonna take some time to get used to the nuances vs swiftkey's, but it might be better... so far, really missing auto-space after punctuation and the comma to the left of the spacebar...

I "miss" it quite often too.. although I'm stock, locked and rooted so am putting it down to general Asus TFP woes of slow response. Although I can't say I ever had this problem prior to JB - it's disappointing as I quite enjoyed typing on the Prime.

I "home-row" it. It is still the fastest way for me to type, and most comfortable for me as well. Since the screen keyboard is a little smaller I end up using my right index finger to space a lot of times. I still miss sometimes, but a lot less than trying to use the side of my thumb on the space bar.

Wow, I highly recommend this keyboard, it works great and is really easy to type on and has very good text correction and prediction. It works way better than the stock keyboard imo.

Agreed. I had thumb keyboard on my Xoom before I returned it and loved it. Got it on my Tab now. Good looking out.

Purchased the app after reading this thread...
So worth it.
I love this app. I bought it when the Xoom came out and now i cant stand using the regular keyboard layout. I can type so much fast with my two thumbs, and you don't have to set the tablet down to type.
* Make sure you go into Settings - Layout Keyboard... Custom Layout or Predefined layout and change it to Tablet: 10" Layout settings for best the layout in my opinion.
good app.It is much better and convenient than the stock keyboard.
Yeah if you don't use this on your tablet you are a glutton for punishment. This app is amazing, best keyboard I've found for a tablet.
It feels like a love-fest in here, but to be honest ... I agree.
I bought this app too. I can type much faster using this rather than stock. I only wish that there was an option to reduce the size of the keyboard to make less travel between keys.
So can anyone compare this with the swiftkey beta that seems similar?

Ok, I can answer my own question now, I went ahead and grabbed a copy of Thumb Keyboard. If you set to the 10" tablet layout, in landscape mode at least, the layouts are pretty similar. Thumb looks less tacky because the tablet swiftkey x beta only has a neon theme that I really dislike. Thumb feels more precise somehow, hard to quantify that, and certainly seems more responsive. It offers quite a few more choices for what word you might be wanting to complete, but it's completely missing the swiftkey feature that's sometimes nice, which is guessing the next word you want to type before you start typing it - it does this by analyzing your past conversations from gmail, facebook, etc. It's actually spookily good that that sometimes - you can type an entire sentence by just picking suggested "next" words.
That being said, I'm finding that thumb seems a bit faster for me at least in my limited initial testing. Think I'll keep it for a while and see how it goes. The main limitation of a tablet for me (as a laptop replacement or at least supplement) is ability to generate text rapidly; while this doesn't get me anywhere near the speed I can achieve on a "real" keyboard, it's a step in the right direction.
Thanks y'all for the recommendation.

Just an FYI this app is on sale now, HALF PRICE! According to the market page as of 6/21/11 it is on sale for €0.99 (about $1.42 USD). I have yet to use it but if it is as good as all of these reviews say then I am sure I would be pleased. But I figured I would let you know for those of you who were sitting on the fence due to the cost, now's your chance to save a little bit.

UPDATE: okay so I have been using Thumb Keyboard a lot this evening and I have to agree that it is awesome. I was skeptical and holding out for SwiftKey to release their final tablet friendly version but I am glad I purchased this. Functionality in portrait mode as well as landscape mode is top notch. This is also extremely customizable with skins and keypress sounds. While it does not have the text prediction capability of SiftKey it definitely is a must have for any tablet owner.
I must admit that this keyboard rocks. Plus its on sale. Can't go wrong for that dollar fifty.
Not sure if this has been posted but the virtual keyboard does swype function. If this has been posted sorry for the double post.
you mean the stock prime android keyboard? This is the 1st i've heard of this...
They posted about this in the Themes/Apps section. However from experience the TF101 stock Asus keyboard had the same functionality. However unless something is different with the TF201 you could just install Swype beta if you like as they updated it for Honeycomb. Now once ICS is out that will be a different story.
I guess Swype is a successor to Palm's Graffiti, if you remember that tech from the PDA days.
Swypeing (sp??) Felt so weird on such a large screen. Thumb Keyboard, however, is awesome.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I love Swype on my Galaxy S, but even in landscape mode on that it feels wrong, so I'm sure that it would be odd on a tablet! The actual Swype keyboard can be made smaller I believe, though, so that it's about 1/3 the width, which would make it more feasible.
Yes it does have a type of Swype on the default kb...however i thought it was not as accurate as Swype.. I didn't get to play with it much but I'll know more after tomorrow

Does anyone else have touch screen sensitivity issues with the Prime? I'm using a capacitive stylus with it and it seems to be not registering half of the touch inputs. I know that the Samsung galaxy tab had a similar issue and there was a fix for it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336464) . Maybe if we can get a fix for the Prime it would actually be useful for writing and drawing.
Here's the writing samples (first is from the original Transformer, using the same stylus).
http://imgur.com/a/olhMe
The "touch counter" shows how many touch events was registered by the app. The Prime saw less than 2/3 of the points.
On the last screenshot you can see how wavy and distorted the diagonal lines get.
When I first setup mine, it seemed to be a lot less sensitive than my TF101's screen but mine has been finebsincenthe ICS 4.0.3 update.

Are you using a stylus or just finger touch?
I have noticed the same thing. Handwriting is hard to do unless its huge, and been getting some wavy lines as well.
Finger touch, it was bad eniugh before the update that I was really concerned about general use. After posting, I also tried my Adonit Jot in Sketchbook Pro and had no problem.

Hm, I updated to 4.03 but the problem is still there. I've tried it in the Supernotes app that came pre-loaded too. Seems that it isn't as serious as on the Samsung but I'm still unhappy that it's not as good as the TF1. I can deal with the bluetooth / GPS issues but this is one I can't live without
The numbers are from the debug mode of my app.
I'll wait till I can test it on some store models before I buy again.

Hey I'd just like to come out and say I've noticed the same sensitivity issues on my Prime. It sucks. I bought this thing for school, so naturally I'd like to be able to take notes on it, but alas I cannot.

I receive the same issue at each power level. Certain letters like "e" are especially difficult to write, and most of the time words don't appear at all if I'm writing at my normal pace.
I though sketchbook was not supporting ICS yet.
I have no problems, including sketchbook pro and my jot, on ICS. I'm pretty sure it is isolated. Probably the bloody FFC ribbon cables inside or issues with the screen.

"no problems" is fairly relative in this case. Everything works for us, its just how well does it work.
From what I can tell there is 3 problems.
First is the minimum distance travelled before a writing touch event is registered seems much to large. Presumably this is a software thing since speed you try to write doesn't effect this.
Second is that straight lines are wavy, mostly on diagonal lines.
Third is that the prime may not be registering as many points per second as others. To test this I have been using the writepad app in debug mode. I time 10 seconds and scribble at a constant speed (and tried different speeds). for 10 seconds I am getting ~800 touches no matter the speed i scribble, so the prime seems to be able to register 80 touches/second. If we could compare this to other devices that would be interesting to see.
I just went to Best Buy and tested a bunch of other tablets. The original Transformer was much much better than the Prime. It recorded almost everything I wanted to write, regardless of the speed. There is definitely an issue, and I believe its a software issue.

Happy to hear that. I have been using touchscreen tune on a tab 10.1 and it made a world of difference. And the recently added palm rejection works nicely as well.

I dont really care about keyboards since im going to be keeping mine docked most of the time.. but my wife loves Slide IT. It is pretty much Swype for tablet. It is normally $5.99 I think but right now its on sale for $0.99 Has lots of nice free themes all over the market too.

Try A.I.type keyboard.
I used it alot on my HP touchpad (running android). It was very good. Just got my prime this morning and haven't had a chance to do too much with it other than update it to ICS.
here is the Link
I've now used Swype (doesn't fit the screen and a pop-up message to that effect comes up every time you type something). It does work in landscape mode, but not at all in portrait -- you end up with something entirely different than the keys you swyped or tapped. So that was a no go.
I've been using Thumb Keyboard for a few days, but it doesn't work all that well for me, especially since there seem to be many times when I'm holding the device and need to type one-handed. So, it's better than stock, but not perfect for me.
Now I'm using SlideIT, with the metal blue skin that matches ICS perfectly. It's beautiful, fits both landscape and portrait modes flawlessly, and works like a charm.
Unless and until Swype releases a version that works with the Prime's screen resolution, I'm sticking with SlideIT.

I'm the developer of Thumb Keyboard and I'm very interested in this. Do you mean that the performance of TKB is worse or are you referring to the text prediction?
The strategy of Thumb Keyboard is to have user adjustable layouts so that typos are reduced to a minimum. (So correction can be reduced to a miminum). In particular for the Transformer there's an option to adjust the width of the two halves so that the keys are reachable despite the large bezel.
I'm working on a new update (version 5) that will make use of the advanced spelling engine of Ice cream sandwich. Tests have shown that these are as powerful as AI prediction.

hey guys - I use the phone version and I LOVE it. I installed the free trial on my prime just now but it doesn't pick up what I'm typing. If I'm typing quickly, it skips letters unless I slow down. Do any of you have this issue? It makes it impossible to type on!
Gonna try an uninstall/reinstall real quick.

I like SwiftKey Tablet X.. Works great and like the word prediction and split keybord.
Haven't had any problems. You with problem have you download the correct one? and have you tried to type in different apps/place so there isn't the program you uses that make the SwiftKey to perform bad.

No I dont have this problem but i do not do much typing where i am speed typing. My biggest gripe, which is not the keyboards fault, is the autp rotation is too sensitive. Many times i am typing something slightly move the screen and rotates and i lose my spot or completely lose what i'm typing because i hit the back button.
On my phone (Desire with CM7) I use and love Swype. I understand that an ICS-compatible version will be available at the end of January. That said, I can see that it won't be as neat on the Prime's form factor. We'll see.
In the mean while I'm using Thumb Keyboard 4, on the recommendation of another thread on this forum. Current view: the best of the bunch; fairly good but has some flaws (e.g. doesn't auto-capitalise "I", no visible key for a comma; auto-complete/correct doesn't feel quite as smooth as I'd like). Also doesn't suit my fat fingers
In short I really miss Swype, but fear that it won't be quite as good as on my phone, particularly in landscape.

I wholeheartedly agree
It's the best keyboard I've used. Swype and the likes aren't very efficient on tablets.
I'm loving thumb keyboard as well. I even started using it over HTC ime on my phone, which I have used for a year and a half on my Droid X, t bolt, and bionic.
I am not the developer of thumb keyboard and i have every app mentioned here and then some. Hands down thumb keyboard for tablets. Not even close. Having the options for split keyboard and for a half screen keyboard for when you are walking around cradling the tablet with one hand and typing with the other is the greatest. No other feature can be more valuable.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I just got my Transformer Prime about a week ago, super kick ass by the way, and I love SwiftKeys on my phone. However.. first off I think it sucks you've got to buy the SwiftKeys Tablet version. It wouldn't be that hard to just issue a license that let you download the SwiftKeys Tablet for free once you purchased the base model. Even better just create one version and have the user select in the initial options "Tablet or Phone" during setup. I haven't had to re-buy any of my other apps thus far, they all just work. So I wanted to call bull****, bull**** and get it out of the way.
Related to that I was wondering if anyone was just using the regular SwiftKeys app (meant for the phone) on their tablet with any success, or do you have to break down and buy the tablet version?
Next does SwiftKeys Tablet work with the Transformer Prime? I know because it has a docking station it's a little different, and when I downloaded the trial version of SwiftKeys Tablet it was kinda flaky. At times when I'd plug in my keyboard, it wouldn't type, and it was always prompting me to choose which is the default keyboard. So I wanted to know if SwiftKeys Tablet actually worked with the Prime and if so, were their some tricks I was missing?
Lastly in lieu of SwiftKeys is their a better keyboard app for the Prime? The default onscreen keyboard is okay, but the word prediction sucks, and it's not very intuitive. I know the Prime having a physical keyboard throws a monkey wrench in most of the keyboard apps, so is there perhaps a defacto app that's as awesome as SwiftKeys but is designed with the Prime in mind?
I've tried regular Swiftkey on my Prime, and it works, but not well. It defaults to the same behavior as on a phone, which doesn't translate over to a tablet very well. I think that the reason why there is two versions is because keyboards actually need to behave differently between phones and tablets, so there is really two separate apps that had to be developed. I'd rather not pay for two apps in this situation, but I'm all for free markets, and nobody is making anyone else buy anything.
As for other keyboards, I use Thumb Keyboard and I like it. Its word prediction isn't even close to Swiftkey's, but it's better than stock, and you can adjust the size of the keys, as well as lots of layout options. I mainly just use the dock for typing anything more than a few words, though.
Doesn't Jelly Bean have lots of Swiftkey style features? Might be worth just waiting and saving money.
Mind you, that could be a long wait.
I use SwiftKey, it works great for me
But I don't use the dock on my Prime

I use the tablet version too. Docked though, seems a little odd having the three suggested word boxes show at the bottom of the screen while I type on the dock (as I'm typing this now). Overall, I do like it. I also use Swiftkey X on my phone.
