thanks jjegan. i tried doing what is said in those posts. i'm either doing something wrong or there are steps missing in the posts. i wanted to backup my phone before trying roms or anything else but i cannot even do that.
i guess the world of rooting and customizing phones is too much for me.

No its not hard once you get into it, yes sometimes little things get missed in the instructions I have seen that here when I was a newbie

Download CFRoot.
Extract to a tar file only.
Open Odin .
Place tar to PDA .
Boot to download mode then vol up .
Connect usb cable .
Hit start in odin installs reboot andshould have root and cwm recovery .
Drivers for usb or kiesmust be installed first and kies not running in the task bar when using odin.

I second that

.....just to add, if it doesn't boot after the Odin flash then boot into recovery and that triggers the installation of the cf root

[Q] Best Rooting method ?

Ok So im a noob to all of this . I have root 2 of 3 phones both samsung . I rooted them both using adb cmd lines on my pc. I have also seen one click . and odin methods. I have not yet installed clockworkmod. Not sure what version to install ? my phones are all edo4 froyo 2.2. Not sure what roms are good ? etc... still reading up . Anyway my question is which method is the most up to date and considered the best way to root ? Also what is considered the best way to lagfix ? Still learning about all the roms and kernels . Im like a 3 day old noob to all this. So keep it simple for the stupid guy

Do you want to root and stay stock or do you want to flash a custom rom as well? And are you familiar with odin and how to use it?
Have never used odin. I would like to flash a nice clean rom of some sort eventually when i figure out what all the diffrences are. Also have not installed Clockworkmod.
Here is a quick guide to rooting if you are still running ED01:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046855
As for a stable and clean rom, I would suggest the Community rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108991
and if you are not on ED01 and don't mind losing installed apps, you can skip the rooting process and install the commmunity rom zip from clockwork mod just by flashing over clockwork recovery. Make a backup in clockwork recovery before you install any rom though, this will save you a very large headache of going back to stock and having to update all over again should anything go wrong.
there is one major thing to always pay attention to:
ONLY use the PDA button in Odin, NEVER use the Phone button (this will brick your phone)
Also not afriad to do the research and learn to use odin . Especially if this is considred to be the best method for rooting and installing roms and kernels. Does the fact that I have used ADB method affect usining odin. Do I need to Unroot my device and start fresh? and anything special I should know about Clockworkmod?

Well, here is Odin: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?429fcpdtpckkcea download and install on your PC. Once you have done that, download this: http://www.mediafire.com/file/06al8prkgj29gps/cwm-recovery-ALL-3-30-FIX.tar to your PC and remember where you put it.
I suggest community rom for you but you are welcome to choose something else. Download this and put it on the root or base of your SD card. Here is the link: http://www1021.megaupload.com/files/2f6ba494eabf66de4d3888ed8fcd3f20/UKB_2_pbj50_fixed.zip This has a slightly undervolted kernel so it will give you better battery life.
Once you have done all of that, power off your phone and take the battery out. Hold the volume down button and at the same time plug your phone into your PC. This should put you into download mode on the phone. Open odin on the PC and Hit the "PDA" button. ONLY THE PDA BUTTON FOR THIS!!! Then find the cwm 3-30-fix all tar and select it. Then hit start. When it finishes you will see a green "PASS", unplug the phone and put battery in. Hold down the volume up and down buttons and the power buttons ALL at the same time and hold them until you see the samsung symbol. Then navigate to wipe data/factory reset and hit the power button. This will wipe your data. Make sure to save your phone numbers first. Then go to install zip from SD card and then choose zip from SD card and then find community rom and then hit the power button. Let it flash and then hit the menu button and you will go back to the main cwm recovery menu. Select "reboot now". The phone will boot and you will be running rooted community rom with an undervolted kernel. ENJOY
Ok cool . so im still wondering if the method I used should be reversed . Was it a bad method ? Just trying to learn and understand as much about rooting as possible.
to go back to stock is super easy.
Odin the stock rom and reboot DONE!

I love this phone it is REALLLLLY hard to brick.
Basically as long as you DON'T flash a rom, kernel, or Modem from another phone and you will be good!
Good luck and enjoy the phone
I believe my rom is currently stock . Im not asking how to root or install the roms. just which is the prefered method and should I revert the root method I have used and start over.
Sorry to hijack but this touches on what I'm dealing with now. I had to end up odin back to stock I did the ota back to 2.2. Can use this method to get to ComRom2.2?

Don't even know what method you used but if you are rooted then no need to unroot. Just Odin cwm recovery and then boot immediately into the recovery and wipe and then flash whatever rom you have already put on your SD card.

I Used ADB application on PC and copy and pasted each command line with the phone hooked up on USB. check this link. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Fascinate:_Rooting
Does anyone know the diffrences between this method. Odin and . One click methods ?

No differences really. Just different methods of pushing the necessary files to your phone to give you root access. If you do in fact have root access, then you don't need to unroot. One method is just as good as another. Start doing some research on custom roms and kernels. You change those via clockworkmod recovery.

[Q] Rooting advice and help with what to do with it

Hi I rooted my galaxy s2 and then unrooted it as I did'nt know what to do with it as overclockig and changing cpu frequencies did'nt seem to do anything. I read on your forum bit, that samsung can tell if you have rooted the device or not, how do I avoid that.
When I rooted I downloaded the original Kernal and the yellow triangle went away. Then I unrooted via superoneclick.
Then when I went on to samsung kies the firmware was'nt there, so I did a factory reset and now it is back and is up to date the firmware version is there now.
I'm guessing I should've back my phone up before hand but how and should I have done things the way I did?
My appologies for the war and peace but I am nooob and really want to learn.
What I have learned is off youtube and I could'nt get all the info I wanted, like where to download a safe superone click root.
In the video they used cwm I think but where do you get this and what does this do?
Any help you guys can give me please inbox me so I can learn a bit more.
Thanks guys and girls and all the best for the year ahead.
Kind regards Iamaspecialneedscase.

By not flashing or by using the>> SEARCH will find it >> USB Recovery Jig .

You have gone down a different route firmware wise is KIES official firmware once you change part or modify kernel part you may not get KIES upgrades .
download a safe superone click root.Thats a very old method .

I wasn't going to this question because 30 seconds of Googling would give you every answer you want and more but hey, it's new years, and I'm in a festive spirit.
So your question, first, "what is CWM?". CWM (Clockwork mod) is replacement for the standard Samsung recovery suite which allows you, in addition to the standard functions, to restore data, backup data, flash new zips and a wealth of other great stuff. Basically its your best friend when flashing new ROMS, Kernels, etc.
If you want to do anything above and beyond the bog standard tweaking with your phone (basically everything you find here on XDA) you will need to use CWM. It comes with any and every rooted Kernel you flash. Every Kernel which has root will have CWM. So if you had rooted your phone by installing a custom Kernel you would have it. (side note, you get to recovery by holding volume up + home button + power button for a few seconds).
Now down to how to get CWM and to super one click. If you made a timeline of XDA and rooting, super one click would be at the very very start. Its the dinosaur of rooting. I recommend strongly against using it, to be honest I didnt even know you could still use it. Anyway, the best way to root your phone is by flashing a rooted Kernel. I will presume your phone is now unrooted and you are running stock Kernel + stock ROM. You want to download Odin (http://www.mediafire.com/?a54dbk53vhpkjto) and then flash a corresponding rooted Kernel to your ROM (I recommend CF-Root by Chainfire). I'm not going to tell you how to flash stuff with Odin because there are millions of guides out there, just don't tick re-partitioning. What I mean by corresponding is it build of the Kernel should relate to your ROM. If you are running a XWKK5 ROM for example, you would flash a XWKK5 Kernel. It's pretty clear in Chainfire's CF Root thread what the builds of all the Kernels are.
Anyway I hope that helps you, and I hope you're grateful I've just taken 5 minutes to explain to you things that you could have found guides on written by people much more experienced than myself in 2 minutes of googling.
I thanked you because its New Year! (@postfatal)
Good luck with the rooting and make sure you use the search functions of these forums, a wealth of information is to be had and the stickies are well worth a look!!!
BTW rooting will void your warranty.
Thank you postfatal. I have done some googleing and have read up un quite a bit of stuff, but still getting boggled by all the info.
Maybe I will just give this up as abad job.
Thank you and happy new year.

Hi,
Belive me, i was just like you for 3-4 days ago, and by now i almost can everything that's needed to be known about rooting. Almost everyone here make it sound so hard to rooting, that's because they can't eplain things in "noob languages".
If you still don't know how to do this, PM me back and i will help you.
thanks
Actually, Chainfire's CFRoot instructions couldn't be simpler. There's only 10 steps (7 that actually require you to do something)
I don't see what's difficult about:-
*checking your current kernel
*finding the corresponding CFRoot kernel
*downloading same (and downloading Odin if necessary)
*unzipping the tar
*firing up Odin
*putting your phone in download mode (volume down/home button/power button)
*plugging one end of a USB cable into the USB port on your PC/the other into the USB port of your phone
*clicking on PDA in Odin & navigating to where you saved the CFRoot kernel tar file
*clicking "start"
*waiting until the process completes/Odin saying "OK" then unplug the USB cable/wait for your phone to reboot
Or am I missing something ?

[Q] How do I flash a rom using clockworkmod?

Hi guys,
I'm sure there must be one somewhere but after a week of searching I can't find one. Can someone please post a step by step guide of how to flash a rom with clockworkmod without using a PC? I would like Ice cream sandwich with a good battery life. The rom I have at the moment I only get about 20hrs out of.
I have already done a nandroid backup of the rom I currently have and have backed up my apps and system setting using titanium backup. Does this mean that my phone is 100% recoverable should something go wrong?
Links and a tutorial would be very much appreciated. Kinda nervy about bricking my phone.
Thanks.
PS. how do I mark a thread as resolved?
1.copy the rom zip file to sd card
2.choose "install zip from sd"
3.NAvigate the file and start flashing
Also start reading the forums, its already there, your post shows you havent read
Thanks for the help. I looked but could only find threads where Odin was involved and didn't want to risk doing anything wrong. Does it matter what I have already got, do I need to wipe anything b4 flash? I have read some posts about flash going wrong because some steps weren't completed to wipe something but it wasn't specific to cwm. Also the roms confuse me there seem to be different versions does it matter which one I pick and will my phone be recoverable without the aid of a computer if something goes wrong?
Sorry for all the noob questions I know they must be really annoying!

Try reading the threads linked here
They should explain everything you need to know about flashing and how to recovery from a bad flash.
Also backup your EFS with Ktool after your rooted.
If something goes "wrong", you're pretty much going to be boned everytime without access to a computer given your phone will likely only be able to be put into download mode at best and the only solution to most of these problems is to re-flash something.
In other words, I'd highly recommend not flashing anything unless you've got a computer handy if you're that worried about things not going to plan.
You are not going to get "ice cream sandwich with a good battery life" right now. ICS builds out at the moment are incomplete/very much alpha builds and not recommended for people who are looking for a trouble-free SGS2 experience.
If you have a Nandroid backup, you can use that to get your phone back to the state it was in when you took the backup so long as your phone has CW Recovery working.
So far as different roms go, read the threads devoted to the roms in the development section & get to know the features/plus/minuses & other users' experiences with these roms then you can make an informed decision about what you might like to try.
Different roms sometimes have different installation instructions, these will be in the thread dedicated to the rom in question.

Odin is for flashing stock Samsung roms mostly CWM for flashing custom built roms that have been developed to flash via CWM only .
If you follow instructions SGS2 flash is 99% safe and the 1 % of bricked phones are 99% recoverable > Not following instructions or understanding and you can reverse those figures + custom rom or root or beta ICS voids your warranty .
So read and learn .

Lol would love too and have been but I still have a computer that doesn't like Odin so feel like I have to triple check everything. Heimdall works but can't find out what partitions to put the files in and there doesn't seem to be any specific packages for it. If I could fix my phone when if bricked I'd learn by trial and error.
Thanks for the heads up guys.

[Q] Help rooting and flashing GS2

Hey all,
i've read through many treads on how to do this but im getting confused as different threads say different things and there is info i think i am missing so i was wondering if you could help me as im noobing out and im confused as hell now. so basicly i have a stock standard Galaxy S2 with the Australian Vodafone ROM/OS/ whatever its called. Model is GT-I9100T running 2.3.5. so with all the info i have been reading the things that have confused me the most are
What version of kernel to use as there seem to be like 50 billion (may be exaggerating)
What is the "modem" that gets mentioned every so often and if i need it what one do i get?
How to use the Clockwork mod and how do i install it because i think the new ROM i want to install is the Cyanogen mod and it made me install a different root and the wiki for it was unclear when it came to the end of installing it
and then how do i install the Cyanogen Mod once i have done the rom.
i know there is a fair bit of info out there but all the threads i read are either incomplete or im just well....... yeah. Help would be amazing for this as the Vodafone OS is starting to annoy the hell out of me!
Thanks heaps!
To root your phone, go to this thread & find the kernel that matches with the baseband details in settings/about phone. Flash this kernel in the PDA section of Odin (DL link also found in this thread).
This will also install CW Recovery on your phone.
No need to go changing modems unless you have problems with coverage/data and you're sure this isn't a Vodafone coverage/capacity issue in your area.
To install Cyanogen, refer to the thread devoted to it in the development section of the board. Follow any installation instructions to the letter (there's a hint right there).
Bottom line, if you're confused/scared/not confident about rooting your phone or flashing a custom rom/kernel, don't until you are confident about it. Whilst these processes are relatively simple if you follow the instructions, if you skip things and don't do your homework first (there are no shortcuts, read, read some more, and keep reading until your eyes bleed), you run the risk of soft bricking your shiny new toy at best (and having to live without it until you fix it), or hard bricking it at worst, resulting in you having to pay Samsung to fix it.
Every rom or kernel I've come across on here has had absolutely simple installation instructions normally in the first post of the thread.

ok sooo, baseband version is I9100TDUKJ1 thus following what i read i downloaded "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v5.0-CWM5" from the site
OK. Two ticks for that info.
So. You need to unzip the tar file from the zip you initially downloaded. Do not further unpack this. It must be the tar file you flash in Odin.
Fire up Odin. connect a USB cable to your phone, then plug it into a USB port. You must have 0:[port number] in the first panel in Odin directly under ID:COM on the left hand side in yellow. Keep trying different USB ports until you get this. This indicates Odin recognises your phone.
If it doesn't, you need to download Kies so you have drivers installed. If you do need to do this, make sure you kill Kies in task manager as Odin won't work with Kies running. We're only after the drivers.
On the other hand, if Odin recognises your phone as per the 2nd paragraph, click on PDA & navigate to where you have the unpacked CFRoot tar file & select it. From here, click on start & let Odin do it's thing. If it's successful it will show pass highlighted in green in that panel under ID:COM on the left hand side & the phone will reboot. Pull the USB cable & your phone should now be rooted.
To get rid of the yellow warning triangle when it boots, get a jig from eBay (search for Samsung Galaxy S2 jig or similar), they only cost a few bucks & can be handy if you ever need to return the phone for warranty service. There is another method in the CFRoot kernel thread to get rid of the triangle, but I prefer the jig.

ok so when i do this when its booted in normal mode it will appear in odin and be in the left box when i get it into download mode (start it holding vol down home) it wont show up in odin, does that mean im doing it wrong OR i am meant to do this in normal mode?
If you'd read the CFRoot thread you'd know the answer to this question.

yeah thats why im confused because when i do it in download mode it wont pick up the phone, does that mean im missing kies drivers? coz i can only get the phone to show up in odin when its in norm mode
ok so removed then reinstalled the drivers and was able to pick it and the install worked =D woot
So you got pass in Odin and you get the yellow warning triangle when the phone boots ? To check you have root (you should have), get Root Check Basic from the Market if you want to be absolutely sure.
Also if you boot into recovery mode (volume up/home/power buttons held simultaneously when the phone is switched off), you should get CW Recovery.
If you install Ti backup or any other app that requires root, if these work then you can be sure the phone is rooted OK.

ok so did that and then was able to install the new ROM, it froze for a bit and i thought that i bricked it but it works and its soooo much faster! thanks for the help only thing now is to fix the yellow triangle on startup! THANKS SO MUCH!
No worries Get a jig to get rid of the triangle/reset the flash counter & you'll be set. If you find the jig doesn't work, you're using firmware with the new "locked" bootloader. If this happens, flash the old bootloader from this thread (there's a paragraph in bold red text about halfway down & a link to download it) in the PDA section of Odin & the jig should work.
So far as installing other roms/kernels go, as long as you follow the instructions to the letter (some require flashing the rom twice in a row without wiping like CM for example), you shouldn't have too many problems/shouldn't brick it.
First thing you should do now that you've rooted it/installed another rom is to make a Nandroid backup in CW Recovery, then you can get something like Titanium Pro & backup your apps & so on. Good practice is to make a Nandroid backup before your flash a new rom/kernel, that way if anything goes wrong, you can restore your previous setup in a matter of minutes with no harm done.
Also, get Hellcat's kTool from the Market & backup your EFS details ASAP. Keep a copy of on your external SD card (if you have one) and also keep a copy on your PC/external drive/or a CD/DVD/USB drive. These basically contain the IMEI of your phone & allow it to work with the network. Occasionally people find the EFS details get fried for various reasons and this can mean your phone no longer works with your network provider. Obviously if you have a backup and this happens, you can restore it.

I tried rooting my S3 using the guidelines from this forum.. (Option 2: Only root)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955423
Here is d procedure...
Download this CF Auto Root from here http://download.chainfire.eu/264/CF-...3g-gtn7100.zip
and extract it to .tar
Procedure :
1.Open Odin and select PDA tab
2.Point to extracted file CF-Auto-Root-SGN2.tar
3.Now switch off device and reboot in download mode
press Vol down + Home +Power, And then, press Volume UP button in Warning Page to enter the Download Mode
4.Connect device to PC and wait till device successfully added to com port (it will turn light blue)
5.Hit ‘Start’ to flash
6.Once it flashed successfully, you can see 'PASS' in table above the ID :COM, you can disconnect device from PC
7.Reboot device and you will have superSU in application drawer.
Everything worked well..till the last step..
After rebooting, touch panel doesnt work..and Welcome screen shows language selection. First welcome screen used to come in portuguese then later after flashing for 4-5 times,it came in english. But the touch doesnt work.I tried factory restore..but it doesnt work..Phones memory is showing up when connected to computer..Somebody Help me bring my Phone back to life! Thank yu!
Looks like you flashed a file for a galaxy note 2 and not an s3.
You need to be careful and flash the right files to your phone or you could end up with a hard brick.
Have a look at the stickies on how to root.
Oh and make sure you have an international galaxy s3 9300 as that is this forum your in.

you flashed the wrong file (Note II), the process is correct but you need to flash the cf root/auto-root file for the S3 as mentioned! Try it again with it and see if it fixes your issue.
You Might wanna flash a stock firmware in odin first before you try rooting.

Flash stock rom then factory reset .
Then read the basic faqs and guides before flashing anything or ignore and head straight down the highway to Bricksville .

So there is nothing I can do to make my phone's touch panel work??
One more thing is..when I open the phone in recovery mode(vol up+menu+power buttons) the android logo in the background is showing some X mark smething..So i guess its soft bricked rather than hard-bricked..so is there no way it can work?

One take to a service centre is best as you have a big problem and zero knowledge .
OR
You could try flashing CF Root recovery from development then booting to recovery format cache system data sd card and preload .
Then download mode and flash stock rom via Odin .

If you phone connects to your PC then try completely resetting the phone using Kies
Start Kies, then go to Tools then Firmware Upgrade and Installation, this process will wipe the phone and reinstall the latest firmware, you will need some details from under the phone battery but just follow the on screen instructions.

You need to ask yourself a simple question .
Is motherboard damaged yes = replace no = flash stock rom via Odin fails = service centre new motherboard .

Flashing stock rom doesn't fail..it jst doesnt improve its condition..Touch doesnt work! Flashing(its showing 'Pass' in Odin) and getting detected by computer works well..
As of changing motherbaord..thats wat I am planning to do after i go to my hometown..till then I want to try and make it work..since the symptoms doesn't imply motherboard damage!

Oh..got it now..
Jst out of curiosity..how does rooting some software destroy hardware?
ANd Cnat I jst change that destroyed part instead of Whole Motherboard>?
No.
You can destroy cpu, gpu by overclocking badly, overvolting, eventually internal card can be corrupted but all those scenario aren't linked to a simple rooting procedure (which is only writing two files on the system partition...).
You need to have a good diagnosis, either the digitizer is dead, or the connection of it on the motherboard. Our the motherboard.
Replacement won't be cheap especially for motherboard.
