I have a data usage icon on my notification tray and I can't seem to get rid of it. I've pulled down the tray and clicked on it, and I've tried to swipe it away, but I just can't get rid of it. Any suggestions?

you might want to check your mobile data limit...it might be set really low and that's why your getting the symbol. Go to Settings>Data Usage>....You will see a graph and you can slide the warning line up or down based on at what percentage you want to be warned at. i have mine set at 3GB. if you dont want the phone to warn you you can simply turn that feature off on the very top right there is an on/off toggle. Hope this helps.....

Oh snap, I never thought that you could move the bar. I've been staring at this thing for days trying to figure it out. Thanks man!

is that a serious question?
I use it to change brightness and enable/disable bluetooth when getting into my car.
oops double post.
You do know all of that is available in the drop down tray. Including brightness. Just slide your finger across the tray left and right

not if it's on auto
plus, why not use it.
Maybe the OP doesn't feel like sliding down the notification bar.
To turn on BT I can
1) Hit the button on the power widget on my home screen
or
2) slide down notificiation, hit the BT icon, which opens up the BT settings, click enable BT... then hit back to return to my homescreen.
^ apologies, it just doesn't seem "simple clean" to me.....
"simple clean" is referring to the wallpaper... not the widgets/apps setup
eww, toooo many "samsung" on this phone already. =P
I kind of like it.
+1 to frankencat.
I love the samsung aspect to this phone.

No clue what it is for or how to remove it.
Do you have notifications turned off?

Thanks in advance for your help nodstuff.
I think you are correct. My notifications are turned off, but I'm not sure how I did it, or how I can turn them back on.
Best regards,
Vinay
OK - I got it sorted out. So simple - there's a toggle on the notifications pull-down!
Thank you again - until you mentioned 'notifications' I had no idea what was going on with that icon.
Pull menu down from the top of the screen all will be revealed

off
you have hit notifications off. Turn it back on. Hit it on the notification bar
It would be a good idea if instead of saying "No notifications" it changed to "[Notifications disabled]" or something like that.
It would be very easy not to notice the button unless you like to explore every last menu and button on a phone when you get it (like me). My dad has this phone too, and I can very easily imagine getting a call about this very issue in a week or two. No way he knows what it means, or why he would have suddenly stopped getting notifications.
Not to mention the fact that saying there are "No notifications" isn't exactly accurate or useful. There could be notifications, but they've been ignored cause you've turned them off.
Thank you motogp1 and Casanoaa as well.
Good point esist...I was totally perplexed, had no idea that icon was related to notifications. Definitely not intuitive or obvious at all
Please see screenshots. I am root and will turn off background data permanently. How to I get rid of the irritating red exclamation mark as attached?

seams like a firewall blocks some data. Do you have a firewall or antivirus on your Xperia S?
Go to settings > Data usage and tap the right touch button, then untick the Restrict background data box. :good:
I want to restrict background data to prevent draining. All I want is to know how to remove the red exclamation icon on status bar.

I see, well then you probably can't. Its similar to when you're typing and the keyboard icon comes up...

@superlimau
Look at this thread - there are two possible ways to deal with this annoying message and still retain the restriction ability.
Hi, today I noticed this icon in my notification bar, and I really can't find what it is. Anybody knows??

it's what usually appears when the notification bar has run out of space to display anymore stuff....but not in your case it seems! Try clearing any notifications if you have any, otherwise try a reboot
No no this icon actually means that notifications are turned off, turn notifications back on and it wll go away.
Assuming you are running a slightly older firmware too as this icon changed to something that makes more sense a few revisions ago.
Again? This kind of thread pops up EVERY other day and I have answered just about everyone.
Your notifications are off. Turn them on.
Can we get a big sticky thread that says, "IF YOU HAVE THIS ICON IN YOUR NOTIFICATION BAR, LOOK HERE!!". ???
baldi - funny you say that - I honestly thought I'd somehow clicked onto a post from several weeks back as I have answered a couple of these myself

Ooops, my bad, forgot that it had changed! I vaguely remember now lol
I'm not sure if I worded that right, but every time I click the little message icon on the screen for messaging it always takes me to create a new message rather than show me my entire inbox. Is there any way I can change this?
It is the message icon above the music bar on the right side of the screen, to the right of the phone icon with the arrow pointing to it.

Hmmmmm, I long press on the screen and I get a menu that has Browse Themes, Themer Settings, Smart Categories, Apps, Widgets, Homescreens, Advanced and Show Off. I cannot see a "configure."
I figured it out. I just added a new shortcut over the icon and then made the new icon transparent.
