Cannot root after Kies update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
I had rooted my phone a few days back using odin and cf-root. Today I got new updates from Kies. (android version is still 4.04) . Now the root was gone, so i tried to root again. But it started to fail all the time. I donwloaded latest ODIN V3.07 and CF-Root V6.4 and tried that. Now Odin says PASS but there is no su or cwmod and root checker says no root.
Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong?
Thanks so much for your help!

go back to your nandroid/cwm backup restore and see if its fixed, also if Kies worked you must be running stock firmware as updates not available to modified phones

dont tick auto reboot and after ODIN has done its thing, boot into recovery manually.

thanks all.
i finally rooted it using the s3 toolkit, with the recovery method. it said it worked on all devices and it certainly worked with mine

Phone says its not rooted: But dont remember unrooting it - FIXED

My phone has been rooted for a while now. I've tried various custom roms.
I recently did a format and installed Villainrom 2.0. When i try to use root apps such as mobileOdin or battery calbiration, it says the phone is not rooted.
When i go to superuser and try to update my SU binary it says the installed version is LEGACY.
when i try to update it, it gives me an error saying failed to find currently installed su binary. Update cannot continue.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm trying to flash ICS using mobile odin (because odin doesn't detect my phone). But obviously need root access. Which i'm quite sure i have because my CWM is working fine.
Root it again save all the messing about .
Root + CWM .

Reflash Kernel first.
If also doesn't work, reflash rom or directly new rom ;-)

Does it have to be Odin that's used to root and install cwm....
Feel stupid now.
Thanks for the advice guys.
Turns out i just had to download the latest SU binary.

CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 NOT working on XXDLH9, any ideas?

Hi guys,
I have an international S3 with the latest (until today ) firmware.
Everything works smoothly and fine, but I want my root back...
So after some reading I found the process is pretty simple.
Downloaded the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 package, odin 1.85. Flash PDA with AutoReboot and Reset time.
The process ends up successfully, but when reboots I still don't have root.
Any idea as why this is happening, I couldn't find any alternative ways to get root...
Any help is welcome
Cheers!

Cf root has yet to fail for me.....are you sure you dont have root. you may just have to update your SU binary. Tried that?
do you see the SU apk in your app drawer?

How do you know you don't have root ???
Do you have CWM Manager and CWM recovery if not its a failed flash .
jje
Happen to me once: CWM was flashed but no SuperSU and no CWMmanager after reboot
If it's your issue, try that:
-reflash CF-root with "auto-reboot" untick in Odin
-when flash is done, disconnect your phone from computer
-Directly do Vol Up+Home+Power to restart in recovery
This should start the flashing process for SuperSU and CWM manager
Then the phone should restart (or do it yourself from recovery) and you should be rooted

there are many ways to know if the phone is rooted or not , one is by installing titanium backup application. when you install titanium backup, it will tell you whether your phone is rooted or not

Thank you very much for this advice! Until Android 4.1.1. I had not problems rooting with CF-Root, but after several (re)flashing (re)tries with CF-Root your trick finally got my S3G with I9300XXDLIB rooted! :good:
I wanted to post a question about this in CF-Root forum, but since I'm new I don't have rights to post there, but your advice definitely belongs there.

[Q] I9300 root pass but no superuser and no CWM

hello. i have a problem regarding my galaxy i9300. before this, i already rooted my device but i unroot it again and install stock rom because
i think it is more stable. but now, i want to play heavy game and need to use chainfire3D and i want to root again.
my problem is, i follow all the step to root using cf-root and odin. the odin said it pass. but when my device reboot, i cant find
superuser and there is no CWM. then i try to check my device at about phone, it said already MODIFIED. but when i tried to instal any app that
need root, it cant be open because it says it is not root yet.
help.. i just dont know how to fix this. if i want to flash stock rom, the binary counter must be 0, and need to instal triangleaway but also need root access.
sorry for my bad english.
Same problem
I have also found that I have the same problem. Following a successful root and install of CWM prior to installing the OTA XXDLI8 jelly bean firmware I can now no longer root or install CWM, despite odin reporting a 'pass'. I have tried several versions of CF-Root-SG3 - versions 6.0 and 6.4 without success. I cannot find any other reports of this problem. What am I missing? The phone otherwise works perfectly.

Hi
I guess you have to do it manually. All you have to do is to follow these steps here: http://mobilecon.info/install-clockworkmod-recovery-and-root-samsung-galaxy-s3.html
and you should have CWM working on your recovery
I hope this helps! cheers!
i already do this but still nothing change. but actualy this problem already solved. this problem occur maybe because i update the stock rom .maybe they put something inside the update file so that we cant flash a cf-root file.
i just flash the stock rom back although the binary counter is not 0. then a lot of thing will be unstable (maybe because of the update). then after flash stock rom via odin, i flash the cf-root. then i got all the SU and CWM. now i can flash all the custom rom.
by the way, thanks..

[Q] Can't re-root after flashing stock ROM [XXEMC2]

Hello all,
About a week ago I ran into a problem with my phone which I thought was a software, which actually turned out to be a hardware issue with my sim card. Cutting a long story short, I flashed the official stock rom with Odin V1.85, and it passed and everything was back to default factory settings.
Having now got my issue fixed, I wanted to re-root my phone, in order to go back to the old ROM I was using [UltimaROM v12]. However after flashing various versions of CWM I cannot get my phone to root. I'm no stranger using Odin, I can usually install a new version of CWM in 30 seconds, but my phone is persistent on not rooting. I can't work out if maybe I've done something wrong, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I've tried running as Admin on W7, but it doesn't make a difference, I'd appreciate if one of you guys could help, as I used the search bar before, but it seems no-one has had this problem before.
Modem: XXEMC2
Kernel: Stock
ROM: Stock
Use TWRP or Philz recovery .

I've tried those too, they don't work either.

The problem is the recoveries will look as if they've installed fine through Odin getting a "passed" flag, but when I go to recovery it's still the default Android recovery. Therefore no root.
What root method are you using?
Chainfire one I believe. You basically install CWM recovery, then install SuperSU from .zip in CWM.
So you have rooted but can't install recovery?
Just flash one with mobile Odin,
Nope, no root yet, because I can't flash SuperSU.zip 'cause I'm still on the default recovery.
Just use the old cf root then update the recovery or use framaroot and flash recovery with mobile Odin
cf-root roots the phone as well as changes the stock recovery to cwm recovery! is this the exact one you flashed? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238

I think he is using cf auto root

Odin and rooting issues

Hi
I have a Samsung Galaxy Edge SM-G950F, sim free, running 5.1.1
I decided to root using Odin
Ive used Odin many times to root several Samsung devices before so now how to use.
This time though i had issues, I used Odin 3.10 for the first time, normally use 3.09, and the AP was CF-Auto-Root-zerolte-zeroltexx-smg925f.tar
Every was fine until phone rebooted, Odin said success, but phone got stuck in boot. Couldnt go into recovery, only download mode.
After trying to flash in firmware again, no success, finally managed to get Smart Switch to reinstall firmware and reset device. Phew.
Now my questions are, was the problem Odin 3.10? Was Auto-Root wrong? Is it me?
Im obviously reluctant to try rooting again, is Odin 3.09 a more stable version and will work or whats the best way to root.
Thanks for any help
i'm not sure but i remember that cf auto root i'snt for 5.1.1, but only for 5.0.2
You Flash twrp recovery and root the device
